You Can't Stay HereIron Chic's new record is two things: both the same as previous releases and absolutely incomparable to them.
You Can't Stay Here addresses the same big questions that have plagued the Long Island punk group from their outset: anxiety, depression, relationships, substance abuse, mortality, life, death, what it all means, why we're forced to experience them. But this album is punctured with grief and devastation; while these are all familiar concepts, they're relayed with an added desperation, and the claustrophobic, inescapable reality of them. There's no punchline, no immediate silver-lining. That pervasive darkness goes right back to the record's title, a line from the song, You Can't Stay Safe. It's a manifestation of a general anxiety, a permanent lack of peace.
No matter what you do in this world, there's always some danger or something lurking there for you, Lubrano sighs. Even when you kind of think you're okay, you might not be. That was just sort of like a desperation there: you can't really be safe anywhere.
It's hard to not hear all of this as a product of the loss the band suffered in January 2016, when Rob McAllister, Iron Chic's founding guitarist, died unexpectedly.
The band is still coming to terms with McAllister's passing. I've dealt with loss before in my life, Lubrano says. I lost my dad when I was 21, but he was sick and we kind of saw it coming, and I was able to process it in that sense. You Can't Stop MeMany of the greatest works of art throughout history were
fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE's appropriately titled You Can't Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one.
Like the once unthinkable creative and commercial reemergence of ALICE IN CHAINS or the classic, legendary and timeless touchstone that is AC/DC's Back in Black, Suicide Silence's fourth album features a new frontman on the heels of earthshaking tragedy. You Can't Stop Me serves as a simultaneous introduction to vocalist Hernan "Eddie" Hermida, as well as a celebration of the brotherhood the band shared with Hermida's fallen predecessor. The group chose the album's title from a collection of lyrics left behind by the late Mitch Lucker, while their formidable revamped sound makes it clear that Suicide Silence's resurrection is complete. This special compilation presents Jimi Hendrix's 1965-
1967 sessions with Curtis Knight & The Squires prior to his
international fame leading the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
While Jimi Hendrix's intermittent tenure as a guitarist for
Curtis Knight & The Squires in 1965 and 1966 was relatively
brief, more than 100 albums have been crafted from
approximately forty studio recordings and consumer grade
stage recordings by the group. Most featured low fidelity
variations, remixes, edited versions, and instrumentals of
the same material-often with their song titles changed.
These albums were poorly annotated and all too often
featured cover art that depicted the guitarist at the peak
of his Jimi Hendrix Experience fame (and not as 'Jimmy
Hendrix,' a sideman to Curtis Knight) and thus snared
unwitting fans throughout the world that were starved for
new Hendrix music for decades.
Jimi Hendrix was hamstrung throughout his career by
litigation over these recordings in the US and UK and these
fights continued until his family ultimately prevailed in
litigation. You Can't Use My Name stands as their first
attempt to present this music in its original context.
You Can't Use My Name is newly mixed and prepared
for release by Eddie Kramer and includes the previously
unreleased 1966 recording "Station Break," the full length

I Can't Stand The Rain (Pure Pleasure)
This wonderful album, originally released in 1974 on the Memphis-based Hi Records label, deserved a wider audience than it ended up getting at the time. It played to Ann Peebles' great strength, her poised and sultry voice, and surrounded by the sparse, easy funkiness of the trademark Hi rhythm section and producer Willie Mitchell's perfect use of horns and strings, she sings like a resilient but disappointed angel on this impressive set of songs about the darker side of love. Her best song is here, the eccentric but brilliant I Can't Stand the Rain, along with a marvelous version of Joe Simon's (You Keep Me) Hangin' On, and perfect readings of a pair of Earl Randle songs, If We Can't Trust Each Other and I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down. Peebles sings her heart out, and with those somehow bright-sounding Hi grooves behind her, it all comes together to make a classic album of dark, bouncy, and beautiful Southern soul.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

Hard For To Win And Can't Be WonI suppose it's not terribly difficult to play a guitar - to hold the thing in your arms, to move your hands across its body in all the prescribed and proven ways, to coax a little melody into being.
But what Nathan Salsburg - an acoustic guitarist and the curator of the Alan Lomax archive, a Pennsylvania-born Kentuckian who has logged good time in coastal Maine - does with his instrument is singular, nearly mystic: his are agile, engaging compositions, songs that feel desirous and questioning and vital, as if they weren't just channeled into being, but demanded revelation.
Nathan's 2011 solo debut, Affirmed, directly addressed a trio of thoroughbreds - Affirmed, Eight Belles, and Bold Ruler - which also made it at least in part about Salsburg's Kentucky: the land that sustained and nurtured those horses, the ancient traditions that anointed and sometimes undid them. Its follow-up, Hard For To Win and Can't Be Won, is also a record about place, although its landscapes are less specific. Some of them are memories, even: spaces that were real once, but have to be conjured now, willed to or from mind. Most of the album's songs are instrumental, save two re-workings of older material: "Coll Mackenzie," written and first performed by Archie Fisher, and "To Welcome the Travelers Home," a composite of two traditional nineteenth-century pieces; one sacred, one less so. Both songs concern homecomings, what it feels like to be enveloped by a place that you know will sustain you, will nurture what needs nurturing.
Musically, Nathan has emerged from a venerable tradition that includes Lena Hughes and Frank Hutchison, John Fahey and Ry Cooder. I'm reluctant to make too much of his virtuosity - and he is virtuosic, a staggering craftsman - because he is
also in the unique position of having that be the least interesting thing about his playing. There are moments in Nathan's pieces - these nimble rhythmic shifts, steps from one place to another - that make my knees quiver. Listening to him play, it's hard not to feel subsumed by gratitude.
I'm just as hesitant to frame his work as subversive, and yet - he is such a remarkably courageous writer and musician, and Hard For To Win and Can't Be Won is so matchless a document, so inimitable in its moves. This is the sort of record

Although they would go on to become one of the most commercially successful acts of the 1970s, most observers agree that Blood, Sweat & Tears 1968 debut effort Child Is Father to the Man remains the ambitious ensembles finest and most enduring musical statement. The bands only album under the leadership of legendary singer / keyboardist Al Kooper, Child Is Father to the Man stands with such late-60s art-pop landmarks as the Zombies Odessey and Oracle and Loves Forever Changes in capturing the periods seemingly limitless creative possibilities.
Child Is Father to the Man is a brilliant reflection of the desire of Koopera former member of the seminal Blues Project and a key collaborator in Bob Dylans early electric workto use an expanded instrumental lineup to explore a broader range of sounds, styles and compositional approaches. Towards that end, he launched Blood, Sweat & Tears, recruiting a stellar assortment of players from the worlds of rock and jazz, including ex-Blues Project guitarist Steve Katz, former Buffalo Springfield/Mothers of Invention bassist Jim Fielder, jazz drummer Bobby Colomby and noted jazz horn players Randy Brecker, Dick Halligan, Fred Lipsius and Jerry Weiss.

Koopers expansive musical vision may have been a bit too far ahead of its time. Although it was a favorite of early FM album-rock DJs, Child Is Father to the Man barely scraped the Billboard Top 50 and failed to produce a hit single. SomeKindaWonderfulFateful encounters at Cleveland bars rarely lead to musical mythology, but SomeKindaWonderful have a different kind of story to tell.
A three-piece featuring Jordy Towers (vocals/lyrics), as well as Matt Gibson (guitar) and Ben Schigel (drums), the genre-bending group came together after Towers became a casualty of the major label system. Once signed to Interscope as a solo act, he refused to become yet another faceless persona and the label left him hanging on the vine. Towers knew it was time for a reset and headed to Ohio to re-examine his life.
"Im not the type to be defeated easily," says Towers. "You know, most people move to LA to make it, but I had to leave LA to find my path."
In January 2013, Towers took a trip to visit family in the suburban Cleveland town of Olmstead Falls (pop. 9,000). It was there that he fatefully crossed paths with Gibson and Schigel. While the local musicians were just intending to just grab some beers at a local bar, they found much more than they had anticipated when they came across Jordy.
"We were basically a band without a lead singer and he was a lead singer without a band," says Schigel. "We headed back to our studio the night we met and, literally three hours later, our first song Reverse was done."
To call "Reverse" the product of fate is an understatement. Endlessly catchy, the song feels both modern and classic, nodding to 60s soul and contemporary R&B with the dynamic range of big-room pop-rock and cinematic emotion. Its structure, which features Towers unraveling a backwards narrative with a cadence that merges rap and soul, provides a novel lyrical framework to a unique sound.
"Its an R&B soul rock record," says Towers. "It sort of mirrors my move from LA to Cleveland. That path is reversed from what youd expect. Nothing is deliberate. Afraid Of HeightsStraight from the dungeons of L.A., Wavves deliver Afraid Of Heights, their fourth album. Now a duo consisting of guitarist Nathan Williams and bassist Stephen Pope, they sound bigger, brasher, and shockingly more professional than ever on Afraid Of Heights which positions the band to take their rightful place amongst the pop-punk gods. You know the story by now. Bored dude in his parents' tool shed-turned-room with no insulation and a record stuck to a hole in the wall to keep the mice out turns on a four-track recorder, fucks around and ends up with two of the oddest, noisiest, and downright catchiest albums in recent memory.
The product of more than a year of writing and recording, Afraid Of Heights expands the Wavves sound while remaining true to the band's original vision - it was created with absolutely no label involvement, a specter that nearly derailed King Of The Beach. Working with producer John Hill (known for his work with M.I.A. and Santigold, as well as with hip-hop acts such as Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan), the band found a willing party in creating what they felt was the truest expression of what they wanted. As for the Afraid Of Heights sessions themselves, Williams paid for them out-of-pocket, explaining his reasoning with, In doing so, I had no one to answer to. We recorded the songs how and when we wanted without anybody interfering, and that's how it's supposed to be.
Lyrically, Williams took the focus less off of his own melancholy and out into the world, with songs that dealt with crooked preachers (Sail To The Sun), relationships (Dog) and killing cops (Cop). Even when he reaches outside his own damaged psyche, Williams is still making Wavves songs, saying, The general theme of the record is depression and anxiety, being death-obsessed and paranoid of impending doom. I feel like the narration is almost schizophrenic if you listen front to back; every word is important, even the constant contradictions and lack of self-worth. That's all a part of this record-questioning everything not because I'm curious, but because I'm paranoid. That paranoia manifests itself on many of the album's best tracks, such as the spacey drones and bummazoid vibes of the Weezer-referencing, getting-drunk-because-you-can't-bring-yourself-to-care-vibey Afraid Of Heights, or the string-aided I Can't Dream, which rounds the record out with the optimistic, I can finally sleep, before subverting itself with, But I can't dream.
