    Alone

Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip-hop producer for artists like Common, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots, but he doesn't categorize himself as anything but an artist. He advises younger musicians to do the same.

You don't have to put yourself in a box...there's so many different ways to go, Riggins says. A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protÉgÉ, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney's first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he's backed reads like the genre's hall of fame - Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.

But on his solo debut Alone Together, set for an October 23 release on Stones Throw Records (Vinyl and digital will be released in two-parts over summer and fall 2012), Riggins plants himself firmly as a hip-hop producer with a 34-track instrumental odyssey through nearly every influence on his career thus far. The project was inspired by much of the music he was creating while living in Los Angeles, and also by the love of his son and family.

Now residing in his native Detroit, Riggins is back where it all began. I feel like I can really breath and stay inspired here, and I have room to set up my lab and be creative, he says. This is the rationale behind the title Alone Together, taken from a jazz standard written by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz that begin with the words, Alone together, above the crowd.

Coming back to the machines, I feel like I can really express myself, Riggins says. This is the way that I express my rhythms.

Machines, however, are just one way he expresses his rhythms. Midway through the album, the track Water is interrupted by a vocal snippet where the speaker places Riggins right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz. Alone Together is that intersection; it's the jazz music he's played professionally since the age of 19, and it's crafting beats like Africa on an MPC5000 while touring throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.

I need the balance, Riggins says, of working with the likes of Krall and McCartney, and also being able to go back to the studio and create hip-hop. Without that, I couldn't be who I am.

Songs on Alone Together range from 14 seconds to a little over three minutes, and are the essence of man vs. machine. When Riggins channels Elvin Jones on the album's climax and tribute to his longtime friend, J Dilla the Greatest, his tools are a Gretsch drum kit, the Fender Rhodes and an MPC3000. As versed as he is in jazz and pop, the machines will always be at the root - until the next thing.

There's always something new to figure out, he says. That's the blessing in it.

    Alone

The Pretenders are set to release their first album in eight years, Alone, via BMG. Recorded in Nashville and originally intended as a solo follow-up to 2014's 'Stockholm', it soon became obvious that those driving guitars, ragged but righteous arrangements, tough yet tender lyrics delivered by the most beautifully distinctive voice of a generation, sounded fantastically familiar. The Pretenders were back. 36 years after their remarkable first album, 'Alone' could be the older, wiser, badder sister to that exhilarating debut.

Chrissie Hynde recorded the album in Nashville with Dan Auerbach, from The Black Keys, who stood as captain, producer and multi-instrumentalist on the record, an album which sees Chrissie at her searingly honest, most incisive best.

The full band joining Chrissie and Dan on the album features Johnny Cash's former bass player Dave Roe and country rocker Kenny Vaughan on guitar plus sundry members of Dan Auerbach's side project The Arcs: Richard Swift, drums, Leon Michels, keyboards and Russ Pahl providing sly curlicues of pedal steel. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Arctic Monkeys, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello). Duane Eddy also features on the punchy 'Never Be Together'.

Of the new album Chrissie Hynde said the following: "This record is what I love the most - real people playing real music. I sang and recorded every vocal in a 48 hour period - 48 hours to sing them, 40 years of preparation!"

    Together Alone

Together Alone is the fourth studio album by the band Crowded House. It was originally released in October 1993 and was their first album to feature multi-instrumentalist Mark Hart as a full band member. Unlike the band's first three albums, which were recorded in the US and Australia and produced by Mitchell Froom, Together Alone was recorded in New Zealand with producer Youth. Seven singles were released from Together Alone, including Distant Sun, which was a top 10 hit in New Zealand and Canada, and Locked Out which reached number 12 on the UK singles chart and number 8 on the US Modern Rock chart, the latter on the strength of the song's inclusion on the soundtrack of the 1994 film Reality Bites.

    Us Alone

Having spent nearly two decades creating uniquely affecting music defined by folk and rock flourishes, personal sentiment and a voice that channels Neil Young's falsetto highs and the wavering, raspy lows of Leonard Cohen, Hayden now signs to Arts & Crafts for the release of his seventh full length. Us Alone is a subtle, emotional and sonically warm journey written and performed by one of Canada's most consistent artists. A welcome addition to a brilliant career.

    Etching On Side D

Finnish doom mongers SHAPE OF DESPAIR will finally release their legendary demo, 1998's Alone in the Mist, in full, via Season Of Mist.

Mastermind Jarno Salomaa comments: So what exactly do you find on 'Alone in the Mist'? Besides the first songs ever written for SHAPE OF DESPAIR - at that time still named RAVEN - these represent my first ever attempt at doom as well. Those tracks are the outcome of solitary inspiration through dark woods and good music. This demo was never fully released - do not bother to ask why, because I cannot remember the reasons at all. 'Alone in the Mist' was only tape traded without any cover or anything else with just a few people that we knew or were in contact with. Two of these songs came out officially a long way back, but soon you will get a chance to hear them all...

    Leave Me Alone

The debut album from the all-female indie rockers. Since bursting onto the DIY scene last summer, Hinds - Ana Perrote, Carlotta Cosials, Ade Martin and Amber Grimbergen - have mastered a raw and playful sound all their own. With just a handful of released singles under their belt, Hinds have already earned early support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music, NME, Guardian, Beats 1, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Fader, Gorilla vs. Bear, and many more. Kicking things off with their single 'Garden', Hinds take us on a bad* rock 'n' roll ride on Leave Me Alone.

Weaving sun-kissed, '60s inspired melodies, executed with a genius call and response between co-vocalists and band co-founders Perrote and Cosials, Hinds create the ultimate soundtrack to the best day ever - from start to finish - spent with your four best friends. In addition to previously released fan favorites including the band's first-ever single 'Bamboo', 'Castigadas en El Granero' - which translates in English to Grounded In The Barn - and the band's first new song of 2015 'Chili Town', Leave Me Alone only gets better with each song. Featuring bright surf-pop tune 'San Diego', the mixed-tempo 'Fat Calmed Kiddos', and a bitter ode to sh*ty boyfriends in 'And I Will Send Your Flowers Back', Leave Me Alone is guaranteed to bring the Mediterranean sun to you wherever you are in the world at any time of the year.

    You Are Not Alone

Soul Gospel Legend at the Top of Her Game: Staples Declared Best Artist at 2010's Lollapalooza Festival

Hallelujah: You Are Not Alone Might Be the Best New Album You Hear in 2010

Stellar Set Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Features Songs by Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Tweedy, Randy Newman, and More

The best album you hear in 2010? You Are Not Alone will be at the top of the list. This is music that's timeless, soulful, and pertinent, performed with an energy and commitment that burns with the same level of conviction as Mavis Staples' belief in a higher power. Here's a record that will change your life and elevate your mood. Just as its two main architects intended.

When Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples sat down to talk about what they wanted her new album to sound like, they both turned to the original spiritual roots of the Staples Singers as a backbone. Both wanted to make a record about connection, about reaching out to someone through the power of music. What they achieved is the album of Staples' career, a warm, powerful, spiritual, and fervent collection of brilliantly chosen and interpreted songs.

Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilcos studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production--glorious on LP--mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Backed by Mavis smoking touring band (Rick Holmstrom, guitar, vocals; Jeff Turmes, bass, vocals; Stephen Hodges, drums; Donny Gerrard, background vocals) and featuring guest turns from Tweedy and Wilcos Patrick Sansone, with background vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora OConnor, the album cradles Mavis exquisite voice, allowing her to stretch out emotionally on tracks like Randy Newmans Losing You and the Creedence Clearwater Revival chesnut Wrote a Song For Everyone.

The two songs Jeff wrote for Mavis meld seamlessly into the vibe and theme of the album: He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that. The songs he wrote take me places I wouldnt normally go, says Mavis.

Already one of the bestâ€received releases of 2010, Mavis message of joy and redemption has found the setting it has always deserved. Truly, a must-own album that will last you a lifetime.

Orchestrated and conducted by Gordon Jenkins, "Alone" was Judy's first, and best, "conceptual" album. Released in 1957, all of the songs reflect the album's title of being "Alone". This record was quite a departure for Judy, who shows her versatility as a vocalist by performing very bluesy and jazz-infused numbers. If you ever want to show people that Judy Garland sang more than just show tunes, this is the album to play. This edition includes two bonus tracks: "It's So Lovely To Be Back Again In London" was released as a single in 1957 and "That's All There Is, There Isn't Any More" is from another concept album, 1959's "The Letter.

First Time On Vinyl On Fat Possum Records

    Liner Notes By Robert Palmer

This brooding lesson in the Three D's of the blues--despair, death, and desire--is a window into the melancholy soul of Hooker's art. Each of the two discs are separate sets from a '70s solo concert at New York City's Hunter College. And by the time Hooker asks How deep and how low can you git? near the performance's end, we already know. It's not merely the profound darkness of these tales--in which Hooker becomes a killer, a TB victim, an abandoned lover--but the pain with which he suffuses his pinched, red-clay voice. Then there's his guitar, constantly working idiosyncratic variations on his patented boogie; sliding and snapping out replies to the tense lyrics of Jesse James or his improvised lonesome wail Tired of Being Your Doggie. Throughout, Hooker exercises his command of tension and drama.

    Alone For The First Time

Upcoming studio album from producer and remix artist Ryan Hemsworth.

Alone For The First Time comes at a busy time for the Canadian beatmaker. Not only is it landing just a year after his debut album, Guilt Trips, but also amidst a hectic world touring schedule and the release of a new compilation from the free-to-download digital label Secret Songs that he launched this past spring.

You might already know Alone For The First Time's first single, Snow In Newark, which had hints of emo-inflected indie rock. Apparently that's the theme on the new LP, with Hemsworth claiming that he's fighting with expectations and conventional formulas in a press release, adding 'Snow In Newark' and the rest of this album are [his] personal reactions to the current state of electronic and rock music.

In addition to vocals from Dawn Golden on that first single, the record also features appearances from New Zealand's Lontalius, trance-baiting entity Doss, Little Cloud and others. Like Guilt Trips, it'll see release on Canadian label Last Gang Records.

    When I'm Alone I Cry

Hard as it may be to believe today, at the beginning of his career, Gaye was far more interested in crooning jazz
standards than singing soul music, and took every opportunity to vent his jazz pipes in the studio. This album
    consists of ten pop-jazz standards.

All Alone In An Empty House

On All Alone In An Empty House, Lost In The Trees merges dramatic symphonic elements with the soaring melodies of American folk and modern pop, creating a sound that is simultaneously intimate and sonically ambitious. Working with North Carolina producer Scott Solter (The Mountain Goats, Superchunk, Spoon, St. Vincent), Ari Picker and company have created a maverick collection of beautiful soul baring music.

Where No One Stands Alone (Pre-Order)

Where No One Stands Alone celebrates the power and passion of Elvis Presley's gospel recordings. Produced by Joel Weinshanker, Lisa Marie Presley and Andy Childs, Where No One Stands Alone introduces newly-recorded instrumentation, rare alternate vocals from Elvis, and backing vocal contributions from music legends who'd performed on-stage and/or in the studio with Elvis such as, Darlene Love; Cissy Houston; Terry Blackwood, Armond Morales and Jim Murray of The Imperials; and Bill Baize, Ed Hill, Donnie Sumner and Larry Strickland of The Stamps Quartet.

The album also includes a reimagined duet with Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, on the album's title track and spiritual touchstone. Where No One Stands Alone provides new musical perspectives on 14 of the singer's favorite pieces of gospel music, from the reverential to the celebratory, with song selections including Presley's beloved enduring gospel classics (the 1965 Top 5 smash Crying In The Chapel, How Great Thou Art, You'll Never Walk Alone), praise-filled gospel-rockers (Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller's Saved) and traditional hymns and spirituals (So High, Stand By Me, In The Garden, Amazing Grace).

Since I was two years old, Elvis Presley once said, all I knew was gospel music. It became such a part of my life, it was as natural as dancing. A way to escape my problems, and my way of release. It was Elvis' explosive mix of styles - blues, bluegrass, country, swing, pop - that generated his iconic world-changing rock n' roll, but it was the hymns, spirituals and church music of his childhood, the deep-seated gospel roots that sustained Elvis and his musical vision throughout his life. This was his favorite genre - no question about it, says Lisa Marie in her album notes. He seemed to be at his most passionate, and at peace while singing gospel. He would truly come alive - whether he was singing just for himself and me at home, or on stage in front of thousands of fans.

Alone In A Crowd (Awaiting Repress)

Alone in a Crowd is an album by Catch 22, and the first release featuring the band's second lineup (featuring Jeff Davidson as lead vocalist, replacing Tomas Kalnoky). The album features a song trilogy, What Goes Around Comes Around, Bloomfield Avenue and Neverending Story, which follows two young lovers who commit multiple acts of homicide on a cross-country spree before finally succumbing to their own personal demons. Themes on the album include a longing for childhood and home, and a general feeling of alienation from the rest of the world.

I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone

I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone is Chastity Belt's third and finest full-length to date. Recorded live in July of 2016, at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon, it's a dark and uncommonly beautiful set of mood-driven rock that's also unabashedly introspective. More personal and more direct than 2015's marvelous Time to Go Home, this one aims for the heart-from the shimmering insights of "Different Now" to the stunning clarity of "This Time of Night," this is a serious record but not a serious departure, a tangle of mixed emotions and haunting melody, a brave step forward.
