    New Once

Zac Nelson blurs the borders of pop nostalgia and experimentalism with unabashed glee throughout the brief and wondrous sound of New Once, his brand new album and first for Brooklyn's New Once flits from four top harmonies and campfire jams to psychotropic passages of blistered ambiance from one rapid minute to the next. The music mirrors the musings of a dosed poet or a Hunter S. Thompson novella, dipping from the exuberance of "Some Are This" to the melancholic duet "Her Daddy Broke" and groove thesis "Ex-Stream-Esque" with brushstrokes unfettered yet Mixed by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, The Present), New Once is a freak matrimony of chaos and beauty fit for journeys under the sun.)

    304

"Raver 5 pulses and glides with nocturnal
    energy and calm beauty."
    - Sam Hockley, Fact Mag

"[Lie EP] is full of nostalgic chords and ambiance
but also driven with a defiant force that sinks
heavy to the heart. D Tiberio is someone you
definitely want to keep a watchful eye on."
    - April Lanier, Okay Future

    304 is D Tiberio's ode to his mother's home.
The address is both personal and anonymous,
Providing an entry point into the bleak emotional
spectrum of daily existence and its anomalies.
Partial to concepts of imperfection, many tracks
include lo-fi audio clips sampled from YouTube,
television and other non-musical sounds that may
normally go unnoticed in our surroundings.
The textures are burnt and the rhythms disrupted,
yet each track is constructed to achieve an
    unconventional harmony.

"Raver 5" has caught the attention of both critics
and fans for its mature, multi-genre production.
"Let Her" and "Gone," featuring Natasha Agrama,
pair sultry female vocals with heavy, atmospheric
    beats.

The sonic creation of an introspective observer,
304 carries with it a shift in perspective of what
may contribute to an essential sensory escape.

    Debo Band

Debo Band is an 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. The band has won raves for their groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music, which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles, alongside American soul and funk rhythms, and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands ie accordion, violins, horns and drums.

Since their inception in 2006, the band have toured Ethiopia twice, having appeared at both the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa and Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar, the largest music festival in East Africa. In North America, they've shared stages with Gogol Bordello, The Family Stone, Tilahun Gessesse (one of the great voices of Ethiopian pop since the 60's), The Ex with Ethiopian sax legend Getatchew Mekuria, Group Doueh, and Khaira Arby and Her Band. They've also performed at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, The Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Fest, globalFEST 2012 at Webster Hall, Joe's Pub, and World Music Festival: Chicago.

Next Ambience/Sub Pop presents the Debo Band's self-titled debut, produced by Thomas "Tommy T" Gobena of Gogol Bordello, recorded at Machines with Magnets (Battles, Deer Tick) and mastered by Grammy nominated engineer Joe LaPorta at The Lodge. A Furrow Cut Short

The prolific and enigmatic Ukranian black metal collective DRUDKH returns with the new album, 'A Furrow Cut Short'. Their most epic full-length to date, 'A Furrow Cut Short' features the grandeur of seven huge, sweeping songs that draw inspiration from the genre's true roots. Eschewing speed and brutally for ambiance and mood, each piece is a journey downward giving pause only for a fell voice from the wilderness. Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument: Shemonmuanaye

Hailu Mergia is a one-man band. In 1985, master accordionist and veteran bandleader, arranger and keyboardist released the Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument cassette. In a nostalgic effort to bring back the vintage accordion sound of his youth, Hailu gave Ethiopian music a sonic makeover. He was already celebrated for his work with the groundbreaking Addis Ababa ethio-jazz and funk outfit Walias Band. With imagination and a visionary sense of the self-contained possibilities of modern music, he captured the popular sounds of the past using the modern tools of the day.

The reissue of this recording brings back a moment when Ethiopian music was
shifting from acoustic-based performances to recordings using more and more
synthesized elements. While the resulting sound of that shift has its critics Hailu
Mergia's initial experiments with switched-on solo instrumentals based on
Ethiopian folk and popular music captures a singular feeling dripping in

    BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini

One month after releasing their fourth studio album, Celestial Lineage, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recorded two live tracks at the BBC's Maida Vale studios. Southern Lord offers these sessions as a special vinyl release. It seems only fitting that Olympia's earthen black metal expanders, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, would add their name to the roster of acts who have recorded at the Maida Vale studios, the place where the sounds of contemporary and outstanding artists throughout the last century of popular music have been documented for the ages.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM's shadow, cast long and eerie from their campfire of the arcane, eclipses the hordes of black metal clones and drones, hewing raw nuggets of inspired music from rich seams of extreme metal and astral vibrations. "Prayer of Transformation" and "Thuja Magus Imperium" are the two tracks recorded on that day, taken from their lauded album Celestial Vintage and spanning two sides of vinyl and twenty minutes. Entitled BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini, this session is testament to the band's ability to inspire awe with homespun strands of metaphysical ambiance and painstakingly flexed sinews of metal, and is a must for all fans of the band as well as followers of contemporary metal.

The Fickle Finger Of Fate (Awaiting Repress)

    Pressed On White Colored Vinyl

Introducing, the debut solo album from the enigmatic legend that is Dale Crover.

Amongst his 30+ year career as one-half of the essential Melvins roster, Crover has contributed to countless albums ranging from platinum-plated classics (ahem,Nirvana) to seminal cult LPs. However, up until this point, Crover's solo efforts have only appeared once in a blood moon, limited to the Melvins 1992 KISS-themed solo EP, and a couple intermittent 7 releases. The Fickle Finger Of Fate marks Crover's first calculated, full-length solo effort.

But let's be clear: this is not a drum record. The album features a perplexingly diverse batch of songs that recall the best moments of the Melvins catalog. With 90% of all instruments played by Crover and recorded by longtime engineer Toshi Kasai, the album is sure to tickle the temporal lobes of Melvins devotees.

Sonically, the album ranges from slightly microwaved heaviness, to surprisingly chill Pink Floyd-tinged ballads, to Max Roach-meets-Throbbing-Gristle drum experimentations,to good old fashioned Andy Kaufman-style head-fuckery.

Though consistently otherworldly, The Fickle Finger Of Fate is surprisingly approachable- dare we say, catchy. But even at it's most anthemic, you won't be able to shake the feeling that a sinister ambiance is hovering just beneath the surface.

    Litmus / Glass Love

As part Anthology Recordings' Surf Archive series, we celebrate the soundtracks to Andrew Kidman's classic 1996 film Litmus alongside his 2006 follow up Glass Love. By the early '90s, surfing was on an upswing in popularity as professional surfers became marketable athletes. The three-fin, high performance, "thruster" shortboard was the tool of choice, lending to a fast-paced slashing style and ultimately a more aggressive "surf and destroy" movement in board culture. Litmus, Andrew Kidman's first avant-garde surf film, served as a soulful reaction to the pop-punk progression that dominated the "alternative" mainstream. Prior to filming Litmus, Kidman's band, The Val Dusty Experiment, recorded a total of thirty-five songs in one day. The outcome of the "one-and-done sessions was a lo-fi, rustic, experimental rock 'n' roll sound, adding a rough-around-the-edges ambiance to the surf scenes that span Ireland, Australia, California, and South Africa. Additional contributions from Galaxie 500, Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans diversify the score. Litmus was a defining moment in surf filmmaking -- it sparked an open-minded retro-progressive movement as surfers formed a higher consciousness about the types of boards they were riding and why. Kidman released his second film, Glass Love, ten years later. As with Litmus, the music came first; Kidman felt his songwriting was ready to take on a new life. Thanks in part to Litmus, experimentation in board design progressed as surfers became more contemplative, questioning, 'is surfing art or sport?' Glass Love and its soundtrack highlights this mindset and time period, creating an extra dimension to surfing that is still prevalent today.

    Manegarmr

Mankind, proving its own self-destructive nature, was since the beginning of time obsessed to picture the way in which this world would end. From myths and legends to scientific theories, we have always been trying to predict our own horrifying end, but it looks like one of the most vividly menacing concepts has come from a band from Belgium called HESSIAN. Featuring members of great acts such as AMENRA and THE BLACK HEART REBELLION the four prophets of our impending demise bring a devastating debut album entitled: "Manegarmr".

So HESSIAN is incorporating metallic influences to their Punk / Crust sound, making their sound much darker than your average crust band, tracks like the opening song "Ascension" and the chaotic "Plague Monger" will try to take your head off with their explosive energy, relentless drumming, old school Punk vibe and Hardcore aggression. What is more intriguing here is that in order for the band to achieve that dark hardcore sound they have included a healthy bit of Black Metal riffology to their song structures, although I could not say that there is a straightforward Black Metal track, the eerie sound of the 90s is present on the guitar leads in songs like "Serpent's Whisper" and the monumental "Swallowing Nails".

Obviously that would not be enough. When your concept is the end of the world you got to have some heavy and destructive sludge riffs, and this is another part where HESSIAN leaves you with a smile in your face. The great groove of tracks like "Mourn The World of Man", can only be outshined by the pure filth of riffs found in "Father of Greed". Obviously "Manegarmr" has its more peaceful moments, for instance the ending of "Father of Greed" which ties in perfectly with the album's interlude "Vamacara", although if you think for a second that the atmosphere in that instance will be less sickening then you are gravelly mistaken, instead of finding a moment of serenity you will feel nauseated by the heavy ambiance of impending doom that these tracks manage to maintain, no worries though soon enough "Swallowing Nails" followed by the equally devastating "Hollow Eyes" will make you realize there is no hope here.

The album closes perfectly with the more interesting track: "Mother Of Light" a terrifying piece in which Sludge influences meet the Black Metal atmosphere with a hardcore attitude, it is the final push to make you comprehend the complete ruin that this album has brought. "Manegarmr" is a true gem of extreme music.

    Tides End

"Tides End" is the second Minks album, but you could say it's a world away from the first. Moving out of New York City to try and cure a bout of writer's block, frontman/songwriter Sonny Kilfoyle wound up in the East End of Long Island. Surrounded by water on three sides, it's the same place that drew Warhol, Pollock, de Kooning, Steinbeck and more to escape the constant barrage of information of the urban landscape.

The result is not just a romantic trip into isolation, but a melodic and warm experience to immerse yourself in. It's a pop record, with all the hooks and harmonies you'd expect from that, delivered with experience, depth and hope.

The escapist mentality of the location directly and literally affected "Tides End," as the LP is named for a beachfront estate Sonny had wandered upon one day while out for a drive. Occupied by one family for generations, who after financial decline, are now forced to sell all they own. The experience of seeing old East Coast wealth, surrounded by beautiful Rococo paintings yet no modern appliances was the initial spark to record the LP. Kilfoyle
himself purchased a portrait "Margot," which inspired and named one of the LP's catchiest tracks.Visions of sipping gin and lemonade's on the dunes with their future in peril could be something clearly reflected in the choruses of "Everything's Fine" and "Playboys of the Western World." Themes of affluence, decadence and eventual decay in spite of the outside world are everywhere, even by the skull and shells amidst an explosion of color in the Everest Hall painting that graces the cover. This is "Tides End," indeed.

Armed with a new arsenal of material, Sonny connected with producer and engineer, Mark Verbos, who had moved to New York from Berlin after a prolific career in techno and electronic music. The entire album was recorded at Mark's studio, a former electric room in the base of the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge. "It was actually a very uninspiring and uncreative but it forced us to use our imagination and find new ways to work together,"says Kilfoyle. So when they encountered a creative impasse they would consult The KLF's
"manual" or Verbos would choose a card from Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies." To clear the cobwebs of influence, the producer chose to only allow Sonny to listen to Seal, Simply Red, Enigma, and early Chicago house music during the recording process. This helped build texture and depth in a recording that blended ambiance and immediacy to the established foundation of all the of Minks' previous work.

Remastering and lacquer cutting by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound from the original 3-track tapes

200-gram pressing by Quality Record Pressings!

Little did any of us who were involved in the planning and recording of Music for Bang, Baaroom and Harp know, back in 1958, what an impact this album would have on the record industry and how it would effect my career, writes Dick Schory, about the audiophile instrumental classic, the first stereophonic recording in the industry to be classified a Best Seller.

Now, revel in the enhanced clarity and sonic richness of a 200-gram pressing by Quality Record Pressings, and remastering and lacquer cutting by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, giving this classic a fresh, vibrant appeal. The superb remastering from the original 3-track master tapes brings out subtleties of the instruments, arrangements, performance and ambiance of Chicago's Orchestra Hall lacking from the original pressing and subsequent versions.
    >[?
The concept for this album is simple: Dozens of standard and exotic percussive instruments (re: manifold from a 1946 Chevrolet) were employed in original and standard tunes arranged by Schory, Bobby Christian, Mike Simpson, Willis Charkovsky and Skitch Henderson, who at the time was musical director for NBC's Tonight Show. Three tracks are of particular note: the quirky Tiddley Winks and the exotic Baia and Typee. The jacket, depicting Schory poking out from a pile of instruments, is a classic of LP art.

The recording, utilizing RCA Victor Record's Red Seal Classical Division's equipment - the same used to record the Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston Symphony orchestras at the time - was recorded in Chicago's Orchestra Hall on June 2 and 3, 1958. Two custom Ampex 300-3 half-inch 3-track tape recorders, running at 15 and 30 inches a second, captured the performances by eight percussionists together with other performers from the Chicago Symphony on piano, string bass, guitar, banjo and harp.

Nina At The Village Gate (Pure Pleasure)

In the intimate ambiance of The Village Gate, Nina Simone made pure magic with her voice and on the keyboard, one Manhattan evening back in 1961. She sang and played with a trio, which featured her favorite guitarist, Al Shackman. We are so fortunate that the moment was captured and recorded.

I can't really categorize Nina's sound or her music and call her 'just' a fabulous jazz vocalist. Although, she plays extraordinary jazz with her voice, as in Just In Time. She has been often called a musical anomaly, because there is no one category for her work. She was trained as a classical pianist, and in cuts like Bye Bye Blackbird, the complexity of her piano comes through loud and clear. Her folk songs, like the biting House Of The Rising Sun, and Zungo, an African work song, place her at the top of a long list of folk singers. Ms. Simone's gospel songs, i.e., Children Go Where I Send You, can raise the roof and bring down the house, as she did at the Gate in '61. She is a protest singer, Brown Baby, and an actress, capable of an extraordinary range of emotions.

Nina has the rare ability to dig into her material and bring unexpected meaning to familiar lyrics. She is eclectic with her taste and her repertoire. But whatever touches Nina, and whatever Nina touches, will reach you and evoke an emotional response. Her music is as fresh today, as it was 42 years ago, singing for that Manhattan audience. They could not have loved her more then, than we do now.

    • Al Schackman (guitar)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Parts Of Speech (Awaiting Repress)

From its first track, Dessa's new full-length Parts of Speech announces itself as something different. The Doomtree veteran and inveterate wordsmith - having proved her mettle in the fields of creative non-fiction, spoken-word and hip-hop - jettisons all genre expectations on "The Man I Knew" and croons a heartbreaking lament to a disintegrating relationship at an explosively-building clip.

From this moment on Dessa - oft-described as "Mos Def plus Dorothy Parker" for the wit and flow shown off on previous solo albums A Badly Broken Code and Castor, The Twin - proves she has truly coalesced as an artist, transcending the restrictions of genre to reveal an astonishing multi-platform voice.

"I wanted to investigate the idea that a cohesive record isn't always made cohesive by having twelve songs that sound the same. I figured when you make a mixtape for a friend, you can get away with a range of genres and a lot of dynamic change. Why can't I approach an album like that? The sequence has to be just right, and we worked hard to nail it, but the thing that holds this record together is the sensibility of the lyrics, rather than a uniform theme."

Track two kicks off a stunning hat-trick of the record's standout numbers. "Call Off Your Ghost" is an admittedly haunting dirge on the "struggle for grace in the wake of a long relationship." An arena-sized chorus tucked into a melancholy lullaby, "Ghost" has that unique ability to perfectly soundtrack new love or bitter breakup at the same time.

Dessa then puts her fists up for "Warsaw." The track boasts a beat like Azealia Banks playing Pacman, which provides a background for our emcee's confident, hypnotic flow. Narrative takes a backseat to mood here, as Dessa spits impressionistic one-ups like "I sleep with both eyes open, standing up," daring you to blink first.

"Skeleton Key" contains Parts of Speech's mission statement: "I haven't met a locked door yet." An ode to female self-reliance that doesn't waste ambiance for message, the track plays like a great, lost M. Night Shyamalan movie, calling forth an era out of time in the story of a woman, a key and a bottomless reserve of courage.

"This record involves multiple narratives. It explores the same themes of love, loss, connection and communion as a lot of my work, but the angle and lens through which they're explored sets this album apart from my previous ones. The production techniques were new for me too - we spent a lot of time crafting a record that could include live players, Doomtree production, and sometimes a blend of the two."

While the album is born of Dessa's artistic vision, it benefits from the collaboration of her varied friends. Parts of Speech owes much of its impact to its diverse production. Dessa got her start as a member of Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree - eventually going on to help manage the group's business affairs as they launched their own label - and members Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger lend their production to several tracks.

The players in Dessa's live ensemble all contributed to the record, as did several top-flight Minneapolis musicians working in rock, folk, and opera. She even enlisted a cellist she found on Pandora to make the gorgeously-layered foundation of penultimate track "It's Only Me."

    Battering Ram

With Biff Byford singing as well as he ever has, Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt making full use of the term 'shredding' with their guitars and the lock-steady rhythm of Nibbs Carter's bass and Nigel Glockler's drums, the future and the past crash together in an ear-scintillatingly engaging, raucous, melodic-yet-classically heavy ten songs collection which will instantly be hailed as a Saxon classic. The title track, with its delectable twin guitar assault heralding the album's commencement, gives the listener an instant crack around the chops, whilst traditionalists will be delighted to hear such a perfect marriage of old, classic Saxon with the newer, fresher invective in such riff-fronted fare as "Destroyer" and "Stand Your Ground", but there are still moments of space and exploration which fans will love. "This one's a natural progression from Sacrifice," says Byford, "There's a bit less rock'n'roll and a bit more 'heavy' on it. We wanted to keep focused on a style rather than moving around too much." Produced by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Testament, Exodus Accept) at his Backstage Recording Studios in rural Derbyshire, Saxon were able to hone in and whittle down any excess, finding the sonic space and balance to let Battering Ram's riffs and melodies get the necessary space to scream front and center, Sneap bringing a crispness to the sound which evokes memories of the early '80s without for one moment sounding dated. "Yes, Andy has been in charge of everything with this album, I keep on overview of it all, but he's done a great job and we're both pleased with the results. We have a great partnership." Lyrically, Battering Ram covers a variety of social situations, from the screaming fans who rage at the gig barriers ("Battering Ram") to the inequalities of taxation ("Tax 'Till You Drop"), as well as engaging in some good old fashioned myth ("The Devil's Footprint" - a 200 year old tale of people waking up in winter snowfall to see unexplained hoof prints which they followed, looking for an answer in vain). "When I'm writing lyrics I like to switch back and forth between complex things, reality and rock'n'roll," says Byford, "I thought the whole folklore behind "The Devil's Footprint" made it great material for a metal song, being that it's both historic and mythical. "With "Queen of Hearts" I wanted to write something around Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, and it's about the chess game that happens in the story. I wanted it to have prog-feeling in the way of its ambiance and mood. Then you have songs like "Destroyer" and "Hard and Fast" which are '80s inspired songs with that modern slant on it. I'm a big fan of Marvel comics, and I wanted to write a song around the character Destroyer, and with "Hard and Fast" it's as the title suggests, about driving fast! I do like to tie the lyric into the song, so if it's going to be a song about driving fast, well, it has to be a fast, hard song!" There is also the album's closing cut, haunting, gripping, melancholic tale of the First World War, "The Kingdom of The Cross", where a poem unfurls the feelings and horrors which comprised this most brutal of global conflicts. "This year is the centenary of the end of the First World War. Nigel had a piece of music which he played on a synthesizer for a couple of years that I really liked. We had an actor (and singer), David Bower from the band Hell, read the poem and I sang the choruses. I didn't want it to be typical Saxon, so it is just keyboards, bass, me and Dave." Wonderfully uncompromising, with Battering Ram Saxon have once again established their rightly-venerated credentials as Kings and vanguards of heavy metal music.

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (Colored Vinyl) (Awaiting Repress)

Pressed On Clear Pink & Clear Blue Vinyl

With these soft spoken words on the simply-titled opening track-"Intro"- M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez introduces us to his sixth record and first double disc album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Dauntlessly singing into the void that was left behind since Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez suddenly surges with overwhelming emotion as the music mounts an invisible precipice. Historically, he softly eased you into his world, introducing you to the lush and radiant spaces between captivating melodies and intimate lyrics, but not this time. Not on this record.

Graduating from the fuzzy, fumbling emotional cobwebs and draped ambiance of past records, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming careens past its audience. Brazenly stretching out along the horizon, spilling glittery, golden arms of sound across the landscape, it holds your breath hostage without you even noticing you were missing it. If it seemed that Anthony was basking in the sunshine-drenched days of his youth when he released Saturdays in 2008, then it can be said that in 2011, at the age of 30, he is tempestuously charging towards his future with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Relocating to Los Angeles from Antibes, Gonzalez surrounded himself with players pivotal to completing his childhood dream of a double disc record. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) and guitarist Brad Laner (from 90s band Medicine) had been hugely influential on Anthony growing up and now were central to the new record's creation.

"In France there is this show on TV where at the end there is a musical guest who plays one or two songs. I remember one night when I was a teenager being at home watching the best of performances and looking at this crazy bass player with a big afro and thinking, 'Wow this guy is so cool.' "And now I am working with him. It's so intense that thinking about it makes me feel weird. But it's weird in a super good way. Same thing with Brad, I was listening to his music when I was first getting into music and now he's on my album."

Anthony and Justin met backstage in 2009 at Scotland's T In The Park. Later, "he came to me very genuinely stating that 'he was a fan and that he would love to work with me,'" explains Gonzalez. "I love when people do that because I can tell it's coming from the heart. He was sincere and that's the way I like to work with people."

Stepping away from his work with producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson on Saturday, Gonzalez freckles his new chapter with signature M83 fingerprints while pushing himself beyond the constricting emotions of a guarded musician. Bored with being frustrated and shy, Anthony is respectful of the precious time given to him and doesn't want to leave behind any regrets, thus thrusting himself into the spotlight vocally. He tests out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream, and each voice clings to us like a dew-heavy spider web at dawn.

Fans will recognize band member Morgan Kibby, her vocals flirting with the shadowy places in between verses, leaping off the record in spoken word or blending with an adult choir. Morgan will join Anthony on tour but she was never meant to sing as much on this record as she had on pervious projects. Quenching his desire to work with a different person on each record, Gonzalez added LA-based chanteuse Zola Jesus to the mix for the completion of "Intro." "The song was already written but I really wanted a female vocal on it and I was kind of struggling to find the right person, but then I heard her music and it just made sense."

Where Saturday=Youth is drenched in lustful exploration and hungry adolescent wonder, Hurry Up is decadently cunning and seductive. "Intro" and "My tears are becoming a sea" eerily croon to you, swirling all of the glitter and growth from the past records into an epic swell, mysteriously and dramatically warning you of the impact you are about to experience. "Midnight City" (disc one) and "OK Pal" (disc two) are humid, adrenaline driven dreams unlike anything we have heard from M83 in the past. "Midnight City" adeptly sweeps you through abandoned concrete streets swimming in broken neon light and aggressively pushing and pulsating to synthetic beats. While "OK Pal" catcalls you to a locker full of mapped out Peter Gabriel-esque echoing lyrics, leaving you stranded in a post-apocalyptic landscape. These journeys are about awakening, craving and conquering. Throughout Hurry Up, We're Dreaming Anthony carries the listener to different countries of sound in his own universe, "We didn't need a story, we didn't need a real world. We just had to keep walking and we became the stories- we became the places." Drifting away from his previous records and reigned in politeness he unleashes all that he has been dreaming of and yearning for. Even when he takes a second to look back on "Echoes of Mine" the velvety, elderly voice of a woman heartbreakingly tells the story of a girl drenched in the shadows of her youth, knowing she has to grow up.

Grandiose in scale and inspired by Smashing Pumpkin's revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness, Anthony has long had the goal to create his own monumental double disc record. "I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into it [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs."

Impressed with the juxtaposing sun and moon artwork featured on Melancholy, Anthony focuses in on another natural duality: siblings. The cover artwork mirrors this relationship, featuring a photograph of a little boy with a little girl sitting on a bed. The photograph perpetuates the conversation for the two distinct voices we behind each disc, representing two sides of an overall piece that are almost the same. "I want people to listen to it as two different human beings that are connected somehow, but every song on the album has a secret on the other side."

Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best. Gracefully coming into the next decade of his life, Anthony delivers what makes each record sincere, innocent, and full of joy: he gives us his past and his future.

"I think it is a reflection of my 30 years of being a human being. It's a compilation of all my previous music together. It's a retrospective of myself."

    Greatest Of Deceivers

Limited Edition 180-Gram White Vinyl Pressing Of Band's 3rd Full Length Album.

Greatest of Deceivers, the fourth album by Borre, Norway's Nidingr since 1996, the group takes a black metal approach to a lengthy list of influences. The group's mastermind, Morten Iversen, better known as Teloch, has been involved in the Scandinavian black metal scene since the prime of its second wave when it was ruled by a hardline orthodoxy that didn't allow for much in the way of crossover, and when a lot of other metal scenes didn't want much to do with it in return.

Despite his involvement with such classically-minded groups as Mayhem, Gorgoroth, 1349, and Ov Hell, Iversen's got an especially broad sonic vision. Greatest of Deceivers is a dense and complex mass made up of songs that themselves generally have more discrete movements than you can count on one hand. Some of them offer blackened takes on full-throttle death metal and crust punk. Others offer complicated leads and tricky time signatures that hint at mathcore and sometimes even at a particularly gnarly interpretation of jazz. Occasionally the group cuts back the aggression sharply and coasts into near-ambiance. In terms of compositional ambition the songs are closer to the labyrinthine post-rock and post-hardcore bands of the mid to late 90s than the savagely straightforward black metal outfits that were operating around the same time.

    Stills Lit Through

Stills Lit Through offers the first comprehensive body of work from
    musician and visual artist Tallesen.

Hailing from the Hudson Valley of New York, Tallesen - born
Cayman Johnson - describes Stills as a response to the
"continuous flexibility of the physical setting by the additive of
sound." A reference to his joyful erasure of the distinction
    between music and experience.

The twelve songs of Stills Lit Through conjure an eidolon of
melodies painted with watercolor brushstrokes both calm
("Glenticast") and frenetic ("Emmel"). To our ears, this closely
characterizes Johnson's work as a visual artist.

The collection when taken as a whole is wonderfully consistent.
We hear echoes of Autechre's corporeal maneuvers (bass as lead
voice, plasticity of foreground vs. background), but, if you dig out
the provenance of Johnson's nom de plume, you really start to
understand how the melodic through-lines of the record operate
    on a more illustrative level.

What appears to you as a macro-level core 'feeling' about the
record is illusively varied, consisting of insanely lush song nodes
that subtly and endlessly rotate and shift. It is a music that is both
ultra beautiful (Strike Silver, Love Green) and invested in a core
belief dealing with the materiality of musical sound itself
(Plasticized Fsa). It's not the house in which melodies are stored,
it's the crypt of inspiration from which melodies emerge.

Rhythmically, Stills encourages ephemera towards the creation of
a seductively creaky, silvery universe with an unreliable sense of
gravity. The result is hallucinatory in that the album
comprehensively experiences like volumes among volumes of
things change, but in half-speed. "The music is saturated with
information for it to remain flexible to its surroundings," describes
Cayman, an ode to feeling "ambiance with a modern degree of
    attention."

Thus we enter the world of Stills Lit Through, a comprehensive
portrait of young Cayman Johnson's enigmatic, sensual world-building music.

200-Gram Gatefold LP Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

She was the sultry film starlet-turned-torch singer-come-TV actress whose dusky alto captivated a generation. Julie London was discovered while running a department store elevator in Hollywood.

Just three years earlier the bountiful 15 year old, born Julie Peck to her parents, a song-and-dance duo of the vaudeville era, was singing on her parents' radio show. When she started working in the movies in the 1940s, she changed her name to London. During the course of a celebrated career in acting and music, she made more than 30 albums.

The sultry-voiced actress, who was once married to Dragnet producer-star Jack Webb, had a hit record with the 1950s single Cry Me a River. The single debuted in 1955, sold three million copies and remained in demand into the 1960s.

Analogue Productions has brought back Julie London sings Latin In A Satin Mood in damatic, deserving fashion. Remastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the crispness and vibrancy of this recording is spectacular.

Exotic and Latin albums were big deals in the 1950s and early '60s, and singers as diverse as Dean Martin, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee were recording with castanets and bongo drums. Like Peggy Lee, London combines a restrained vocal approach with jazz phrasing and a cool attitude with icy sex appeal on this album of relaxing Latin standards. Julie does look beautiful on the cover, and the backup male mariachi-esque serenade ads to the romantic ambiance.

And as to the cover, expect only top-notch reproduction for our Analogue Productions reissue. Originally a single LP jacket, we've upgraded to a gatefold incorporating more original photographs provided by Universal.

London appeared in nearly two dozen motion pictures during the 1940s and '50s; she was best known to TV audiences as nurse Dixie McCall on the 1970s hospital drama Emergency! She was hired on Emergency! by Webb, her then-former spouse, to co-star with her second husband, jazz musician Bobby Troup. Troup, who composed the iconic musical hit Route 66 played a doctor on the show and it was he who helped sign Julie to the Liberty record label.

Describing her smoky vocal style, London once said, It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to a microphone. But it is a kind of over-smoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate. A style inimitable, in our estimation.
