    The River & The Thread

I went back to where I was born, and these songs started arriving in me, says Rosanne Cash. All these things happened that made me feel a deeper connection to the South than I ever had. We started finding these great stories, and the melodies that went with those experiences.

With The River and the Thread, Cash has added the next chapter to a remarkable period of creativity. Her last two albums, Black Cadillac (2006) and The List (2009), were both nominated for Grammy Awards; The List-an exploration of essential songs as selected and given to Rosanne by her father, Johnny Cash-was also named Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. In addition, her best-selling 2010 memoir, Composed, was described by the Chicago Tribune as one of the best accounts of an American life you will likely ever read.
Cash, who has charted 21 Top 40 country singles, including 11 Number Ones, wrote all of the new album's songs with her longtime collaborator (and husband) John Leventhal, who also served as producer, arranger, and guitarist. Featuring a long list of guests-from young guns like John Paul White (The Civil Wars) and Derek Trucks to such legends as John Prine and Tony Joe White-The River and the Thread is a kaleidoscopic examination of the geographic, emotional, and historic landscape of the American South. The album's unique sound, which draws from country, blues, gospel, and rock, reflects the soulful mix of music that traces its history to the region.

Rosanne Cash acknowledges that, even with fifteen albums and four books behind her, it was difficult to start writing songs again after spending several years immersed in the masterful compositions featured on The List. You cannot keep that in your mind, except as an inspiration, a standard to aspire to, she says. To say, 'I'm going to write a song as great as Take These Chains'-you're not! So the only way to not get dismantled by that is to stay connected to your own muse, and immerse yourself completely in what you're doing so it can be as rich and authentic as it can possibly be. That's all you can hope for.

With The River and the Thread, she has risen to that challenge-and emerged with a beautiful and haunting album, one of the finest works in an extraordinary career.

    Four Foot Shack (Awaiting Repress)

How "deconstructed" can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That's exactly what everyone's favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les' hilarious jam band mockumentary, 'Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.' But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things - as heard throughout the band's debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records.

And as evidenced by DDT's live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions). Case in point, the inclusion of "Battle of New Orleans," "Stayin' Alive," "Man in the Box," "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," and "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" on DDT's debut disc. "A lot of it is just stumbling across it," explains Les about how a tune is selected to be twang-ified. "You're twanging away, and then all of a sudden, something just comes out. And then you laugh about it or you don't. And then you move on. There are tons of songs that we've stumbled across, and these ones just happened to be the ones that stuck."

Upon hearing Four Foot Shack you'll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. "It was very live," admits Les. "In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background. Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it."

Les added, "The Twang project is me exploring a lot of stuff that I personally listen to; Johnny Horton, Vernon Dalhart, Jerry Reed, Bob Wills, Eddy Cochran stuff like that - it's another door for me to open. I'm doing this sort of Luther Perkins, Johnny Cash guitar-ish type part on my bass, by doing the old ding-dinka-ding, dinka-ding-dinka-ding on a lot of the stuff. It took me a little bit to get that. Now that I've gotten it, I can pull songs out of the air and it's surprising how many songs easily succumb to the twang, and can be complimented by the twang. When all is said and done, it's just a hell of a fun project for me right now. I'll do it 'til it's not fun anymore."

Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers is a luminous, heartfelt patchwork of California folk-rock, brisk Americana and show-stopping soul, punctuated with fresh four-part harmonies, crisp rock guitar and Nicki's soaring, nuanced vocals that some critics say remind them of Linda Ronstadt.

    Songs From Stamford Hill

Springsteen, Dylan and Americana fans will find nothing unauthentic about James Maddock's brand of singer-songwriter music from Leicester, England which goes by the brand name, Wood. The verse to the opener Stay You, is Boss-ified, while Whole Lot To Think About is a country-Neil Young moment (Maddock must've heard Only Love Can Break Your Heart a time or two).

With his influences on the sleeve of his peasant shirt, Maddock's dreamy, gentle songs sound familiar-it's impossible not to imagine his musings as outtakes from the Jackson Browne/Eagles songbooks. And that's the problem: Wood's best songs (Straight Line has a Fleetwood Mac/Landslide-feel; Knock on the Head could be an inverted Going to California ) sound like retreads of others'-and those are only the first four! Ultimately, Maddock will have to invent something he can claim as his own, but for now he's picked a primo crop to emulate.

Thoughtful, literate Americana with a visceral edge, Okkervil River are a cult quantity. However the success of the band's previous long player - 2011's 'I Am Very Far' - could land the group on the verge of a major breakthrough.

Which leads Clash neatly to their follow up album, 'The Silver Gymnasium.' Will Sheff reflected on the material contained therein recently, revealing that each track is set in Meriden, NH during 1986.

I'd always wanted to write a record that was more based in autobiography, that spoke about my memories of how I felt and how the world around me seemed at a specific moment in the past, and it felt like a good time to finally do it he said.

After the release of her debut album, Pith, Emily Beanblossom spent two years touring the U.S., selling her handmade soaps and working on the bare bones of her second album, Grackle.

Grackle blends Americana sweetness with sludgy dissonance. Opening with a a slow synthesizer prelude, You Should Go sets the tone for listless anthems characterized by Beanblossom's harmonies and hollers. Vespers, a morning prayer, introduces a coy letter to a wayward sailor in Photograph. Barbara takes the stage to insert bitter anecdotes with a sharp twist of a post-modern dance beat paired with the tremolo of a Finnish lap harp, and Anthony invokes a dark spaghetti western composition supporting Gregorian vocal harmonies.

Emily and long time collaborator Nick Botka, teamed up with Pith producer, Ben Hargett to record this album at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, WA. Their newest recording preserves the playful jangly genre-bouncing enervation found in their previous work, while insisting on a more disciplined approach to songwriting.

Florida's HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL have a natural instinct for combining folk, pop, punk, rock and classic country influences to create a sound all their own. "Their music has a great energy to it with infectious, sing-along choruses and refrains" remarked NPR's Robin Hilton. American Songwriter called HGWT's music "organic, infectious Americana Pop. Their music has a refreshing immediacy to it."

Over the course of four acclaimed albums, hundreds of shows and copious populist-radio airplay, they've nurtured a tradition of inviting all manner of gifted musicians to join the fray. The group's inclusive nature allows it to flesh out tunes that run the gamut from foot-stomping front-porch spirituals and evocative Texas swing to strum-punk rave-ups, hill-country historicals and more.

HGWT's music has been featured in a national Chevy TV commercial; multiple episodes of the PBS series Roadtrip Nation; and an episode of CBS's The Good Wife. Their albums have spent months on the CMJ Radio Top 200 chart. And their live performances have been described as rousing, rollicking, energetic and dynamic.

The band's highly anticipated, fifth album "Science from an Easy Chair" is slated for a spring release on THIS IS AMERICAN MUSIC. This full-length concept album is based entirely on British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 1914 Antarctic expedition. The release commemorates the 100th anniversary of the epic journey.

    New Multitudes

New Multitudes is an intimate interpretation of American icon and musical legend Woody Guthries previously unrecorded lyrics from a dream team of Americana torchbearers: Jay Farrar (Son Volt), Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline) and Jim James (My Morning Jacket). What makes this album such a rarity in todays music world is the allowance of the songs infectious simplicity to stand alone in all their glory. In doing so, Farrar, Johnson, Parker and James, pay the greatest compliment to Woody Guthrie and the collaborative spirit he so greatly embodied. This is an album which seamlessly converges the sepia-toned essence of the time honored past with the risks needed to forge the future.

Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, to tour the Guthrie archives, each of the four songwriters were offered the chance to plumb and mine the plethora of notebooks, scratch pads, napkins, etc. for anything that might inspire them to lend their voices and give the words new life.

These guys worked on an amazing group of lyrics says Nora. Much of it was culled from Woody's times in L.A. Lyric wise, it's a part of the story that is still mostly unknown. From Woody's experiences on L.A.'s skid row to his later years in Topanga Canyon, they are uniquely intimate, and relate two distinctly emotional periods in his life.

Musically, it is the sense of collaboration that makes New Multitudes not just another trite and traditional acoustic regurgitation of back porch blues. From the ragged jangle of its opening track, Hoping Machine, the loping lilt of Fly High, the floorboard stomp of No Fear, to the lush warmth and sudden sonic gut punch of My Revolutionary Mind, the cohorts deliver a lesson in discovering a song's sweet spot time and time again. It's the function and preparedness of each artist's dogged work ethic gleaned the old-fashion way; veracious songs, road weary odometers and sweat stained live shows, all attributes of the man they are honoring.

    It Can Be Done!

It Can Be Done! is an album of new beginnings. The past year has seen Kendl Winter leave the successful bluegrass group The Blackberry Bushes to tour the country as a solo act, walking her banjo into dark bars, smoky music halls and packed amphitheaters night after night. It's also full of intimacy. With a voice that is marvelously unique and bold, and songs that are both classically poetic and rooted deep in her own experience, Kendl draws upon an old-time Americana and bluegrass bent that brings to mind the haunting vocal work of Karen Dalton and Gillian Welch. Her banjo work on the album is striking, showcasing a kind of expertise that comes from years of companionship with a beloved instrument. It Can Be Done! is a victory album of sorts, and Kendl's third release on K, the follow up to her beautiful 2012 landmark The Mechanics of Hovering Flight.

Recorded by Calvin Johnson on reel-to-reel tape at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, WA, on It Can Be Done! Kendl is backed by The Summer Gold, Austin Cooper (drums), Joe Capoccia (guitar) and Derek Johnson (cello). Together they explored her year of new horizons. In sweet spinning songs like "Centrifugal Forces," Kendl makes even the awkward, arduous task of foreign laundry seem a steady triumph: "I'm out walking, Tulsa wind, stumbling in place again. Who knew it would be so hard to do your laundry in Berlin?" The following lead tracks "Rosie" and "Dreaming of Babylon," both convey the spirit Kendl has been working from this past year, the very idea that she can choose to live her life outside of cultural expectations and guidelines, even if when its difficult, even if when terrifying. That It is, in fact, possible to manifest the life of your dreams. It can be done!

    All Hat And No Cattle

All Hat and No Cattle follows the group's 2010 self-titled debut, which introduced the veteran Foo
Fighter Chris Shiflett's skill for writing understated, infectious Americana-influenced rock songs. Firm believers that in order to know where you're going, you've got to know where you've been,
Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants recorded All Hat and No Cattle with a mix of reverence and revelry. Featuring nine classic honky-tonk covers and one original, the album's playful enthusiasm is palpable throughout the faithful yet fresh interpretations; from the carousing opener Guitar Pickin' Man to the bluesier, doo-wop country of Happy Part Of Town to the apt, barnstorming closer Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?

While touring with Foo Fighters around their last album, Shiflett was inspired with the idea to learn
an abundance of old school honky-tonk songs, and then hit the road as a cover band. After arriving
back home, the Dead Peasants reconvened and spent months rehearsing before playing shows all through spring and summer 2012. Wanting to capture the spirit of these performances, the band headed into Studio 606 in Los Angeles to track a selection of Shiflett's favorites from their live set. The band recorded All Hat and No Cattle live and all together in one room, with only vocals and pedal steel overdubbed.

    Rest In Chaos

Let me explain what it's like to summarize Rest in Chaos. What you have here is, in the first place, the book of Genesis as deftly reconceived by Todd Snider who has been inhabited by a spirit resembling Philip K. Dick. The rest of the Hard Working Americans are under the direction (or perhaps in the thrall) of an older wiser Jimi Hendrix and a Frank Zappa no less exacting than he was when he departed. It is rock'n'roll music, past, present and future, and that's no dream, it's just a fact. There are moments here when the walls of Babel might be falling, there are moments when they are reinvented and every time you try to pin it down, it shows you something else. "Half Ass Moses," the third song, ends by declaring "The song wasn't all that complicated."

Like hell it isn't. When, in the very next song, "Dope is Dope," Todd Snider is a voice more inflammatory and gritty than I have ever heard from him before, "His mother didn't understand him / Whose mother ever does?" am I supposed to laugh, cry, applaud or beg for mercy. All that's really sure is, you're not leaving 'til the show's over. Even if you want to. There's nowhere else to go, and even if there were, the music's too good.

So much for metaphysics. The actual physics of the thing is seven billion people out for what they only think is a stroll, armed with nothing more than some quite treacherous Roman candles Rest in Chaos might, if these Hard Working Americans were scientists of something other than sound, be the story of the entropy of the universe, and if you think I'm kidding that's only because you haven't taken the deep dive into its complexity, which if not quantum is at least a quandary. Albums aren't this good anymore; they're not this ambitious; their parts are not so finely conceived, the risks they take are not so reckless, the ways they resolve contradictions are not so elegant. Most of all they don't kick you in the preconceptions anywhere near so often. (How did they manage to create harmonies in "Something Else" that recall both the Hollies and the Mothers of Invention?)

Todd's songs sound like he swiped part of them from Billy Joe Shaver and part from Tim Buckley and welded them together with spare parts from Iggy and Paul McCartney. There's a nightmare embedded here, and what cares the weight of it, the aspect of doom and the hint of doom is Dave Schools' bass. Neal Casal, who might be the most under-rated guitarist in rock, is constantly making the chaos more beautiful than you'd think possible. The roots of the sound are in the jam bands and Americana groups and singer-songwriter sessions the band members have played in but when they get to "Throwing Goats" (OK, maybe I should have said Thomas Pynchon or John Barth rather than Dick) and "Something Else" (both parts), they've joined the ranks of the rockers who no longer look for interstellar overdrive, because they've already found it.

All this is, of course, metaphor. Well, most of it. Some of it. The part about how strong it is, how smart, how completely the product of the past ("stand up for your brother, stick it to the man") and how anticipatory of one of the best futures anyone has shown us is straight up. It's one of the most well-sustained albums I've heard in years, and what it sustains is not only my faith in rock'n'roll or even how hard the Hard Working Americans really do work to make their magic, but how much it means to them, which is the only way it can mean very much to the rest of us.

Let me put it this way: I've heard Rest in Chaos any number of times and there's no way I'm done with it. I can tell you about its surface but I haven't gotten to the bottom of it. I'm not really sure there is one. It is humbling to confront it, and reassuring to know that there is all the rest of our lives for that. "The High Price of Inspiration"? A bargain.

    Clover Lane

Clover Lane marks the Yep Roc debut for Americana singer-songwriter, Jonah Tolchin. The album was recorded quickly and spontaneously in Nashville, Tennessee with an impressive cast of characters that include Chris Scruggs, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), John McCauley (Deer Tick), and Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson). As a songwriter, Jonah bridges the gap between classic folk self-sufficiency and punk's DIY defiance; he plays everything from roots and Americana music to old time folk and acoustic blues.

    Ashes & Dust

Ashes and Dust is a masterful work of art and a particularly important statement for the Grammy Award winning artist Warren Haynes. The songs are immediately and clearly different from his usual style - encompassing beautiful acoustic arrangements, a rootsy/Americana soundscape and honeyed vocals that cut straight through to the soul. Knowing that he wanted to pursue a more folk-based approach on this project, he brought in the New Jersey-based Americana band Railroad Earth as collaborators.

    One And All

Over the last couple years Pieta Brown has been hailed by critics and industry prognosticators as one of the up-and-coming stars of Americana music and this new release will likely be her break-out. Her recent stripped down 2009 EP release Shimmer (produced by Don Was) drew rave response and buzz, but this full-band, full-length recording is an absolute stunner and will be all over Americana radio. Supporting the release is a perfectly timed 28-date North American tour of large major market venues opening for Mark Knopfler.

    Bitter Tears

Bitter Tears is a concept album released by Johnny Cash in 1964. It is one of several Americana records by Cash. As the title implies, the tracks on the album focus exclusively on the history of and problems facing Native Americans in the United States.

And not without success: "The Ballad of Ira Hayes", about the story of Ira Hayes, a young Marine of Pima, reached No. 3 on the Country charts.

The album is a sensitive, clear-eyed take on the unfair treatment of the American Indian. It's stark and moving, his best Americana album of the '60s.

    The King Is Dead

The King Is Dead is a mostly-acoustic set of 10 concise, Americana-based songs, that marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the Decemberists wildly ambitious and acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards Of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

The King Is Dead showcases the ways in which The Decemberists; Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, and John Moen, sound just as glorious in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate structures that have defined their work for years. The album was recorded in a converted barn at Pendarvis Farm, an 80 acre estate of lush meadows, forest, and Mt. Hood views outside of Portland, and it was the concept of the barn, as recording space and as attitude, that informed the making of the album.
