    The Graduate (Speakers Corner)

    With his film The Graduate, which was crowned with an Oscar and five Golden Globes, director Mike Nichols created far more than just the story of the erotic initiation of the college graduate Benjamin. Not only the scenario but also the production modalities were revolutionary. For the very first time the crusted morals of the American upper class were attacked by means of film, an Alfa Romeo - a European car - was advertised most effectively, and a soundtrack was put together from already existent, successful pop numbers. No words are really necessary about the music, since numbers such as Sound Of Silence, Mrs. Robinson and Scarborough Fair have entered into the annals of musical culture ever since they were used in the film. It is astounding to note how seamlessly the various works fit snugly into the film's context, as though they had been specially written for the scenes.



    This soundtrack is a monument to Dustin Hoffman, who played his first big role in the film, and it catapulted Simon & Garfunkel right to the top of the list of ballad singers. But it also recalls to memory the peppy, instrumental insertion numbers by Dave Grusin, who virtually fell into oblivion after all the hype about this provocative movie.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    On 1989's In Step, Vaughan found his own songwriting voice, blending blues, soul, and rock in unique ways, and writing with startling emotional honesty. Yes, there are a few covers, all well chosen, but the heart of the album rests in the songs he cowrote with Doyle Bramhall, the man who penned the Soul to Soul highlight "Change It." Fueled by a desire to make up for lost time and delight in his reawakened commitment to life and sobriety, Vaughan turned in what many consider his greatest artistic statement, an album ensconced in sweat, soul, determination, and not an ounce of filler.


    "Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots-boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies, and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By now, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak.

    With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80s.     Worth noting on Surf's Up is Stephen Desper's engineering work - the entire album was mixed to a center channel quad matrix that he was developing at the time.


    Surf's Up hit the Top 30 on its first release, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard LP charts - the highest chart placement the group had had since 1967. At the time of its release, Surf's Up was hailed by many as a comeback for The Beach Boys, who were beginning to attract raves for their live performances, including highly acclaimed sets at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall.


    Carl Wilson makes solid contributions on Surf's Up with Long Promised Road and Feel Flows, and the album also features stellar tracks by Al Jardine and Mike Love, as well as Bruce Johnston's most enduring composition, the gently nostalgic Disney Girls (1957), but the album's twin jewels are both from Brian Wilson - Til I Die and the title track - one of the centerpieces of the then-unreleased Smile (cowritten by lyricist Van Dyke Parks and here given that album's Child Is Father to the Man as a glorious coda.)


    Surf's Up track A Day in the Life of a Tree is the first in a series of Brian's songs that close the album. It's simultaneously one of Brian Wilson's most deeply touching and unusual compositions; he is the narrator and object of the song (though not the vocalist; co-writer Jack Rieley lends a hand), lamenting his long life amid the pollution and grime of a city park while the somber tones of a pipe organ build atmosphere. Til I Die, isn't the love song the title suggests; it's a haunting, fatalistic piece of pop surrealism that appeared to signal Brian's retirement from active life.

    1970 was a really good year for Blood, Sweat & Tears. The colourful, distinguished group was awarded a Grammy® in the categories "Album of the Year", "Best Contemporary Instrumental Performance", and "Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)".



    The concept of merging jazz, blues and arrangements of classical themes worked well, with music journalist Leonard Feather commenting that »it brought music into rock«.
    Everything seemed to be allowed - as long as it sounded good: almost spontaneously, it seems, the musicians develop a somewhat boozy, cheery Hi-De-Ho happening out of synthetically created chivalric fanfares, or conjure up a medieval scenario (The Battle) with the archaic sound of a harpsichord and solo voice. That caustic big-band soul (Lucrezia MacEvil) and seemingly familiar rock songs (Fire And Rain) find their niche here fits in with the free spirit of this third album, which boasts no otherwise specified title. One listens to this disc, wondering what surprise is in store in the next beat, the next phrase, the next number. And there is a wonderfully liberating feeling in knowing that nothing is a 'must' but all is allowed.

    Al Green Explores Your Mind (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

    By the time of 1974's Al Green Explores Your Mind, this version of the Memphis sound was the production style for only a handful of artists. Producer Willie Mitchell used a lighter touch for his most famous artist, and it's all but crafted into the Al Green sound. Despite his skills, Green never falls into mannerism here and gives heartfelt and cogent vocals rooted in intelligence and technique. Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy), although lyrically slight, has the artist's charisma and Mitchell's pop chops. Take Me to the River, with perfect backing from Hi Rhythm and a horn and string arrangement, finds Green at his most persuasive. The last track, School Days, has Green longing for a school girlfriend and despite the potentially sappy sentiment, it works like a charm. The greatness of Al Green Explores Your Mind comes from a collective effort, including James Mitchell's dreamlike string arrangements and the always skilled backing vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes. But the biggest draw here is Green's phrasing and intimate vocals, making the record an extremely strong effort.

    This double album originally released in 1964 opens with a then-new Bob Dylan song, The Times They Are A' Changin', and closes with the best-known song ever written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes, If I Had a Hammer. That seems to sum up Peter, Paul & Mary, but In Concert offers a lot more than that, writes All Music Guide.


    The surprises include vignettes in blues and gospel, and, most notably, the group's humorous digressions. Peter, Paul & Mary spared few opportunities for a good laugh on stage, beginning with the introduction to A' Soalin', which shows off a lightheartedness that was an essential part of who they were, even as it leads into an exquisitely sung round-like piece that should have found its way into the repertory of Steeleye Span. Blue gives the trio a chance to play around with rock & roll, from doo wop to British Invasion, through the song Old Blue (satirizing folk music purists at the same time), and Paul Stookey adds his own sound effect embellishments to Woody Guthrie's Car-Car. The solo spots are also worthwhile, particularly Peter Yarrow's introspective version of Le Deserteur, followed by his dazzling, rousing sing-along on Oh, Rock My Soul; and Mary Travers' rendition of Single Girl, a low-key proto-feminist song. The group's rendition of It's Raining achieves an exquisite mix of gossamer textured harmonizing and thematic innocence, and their rendition of the Reverend Gary Davis' If I Had My Way is a bracing re-interpretation for three interwoven voices. Finally, the version of If I Had a Hammer that closes this album is superior to their hit single of the same song.     Born on Sept. 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, Buddy Holly
    was well-versed in several music styles and was a
    seasoned performer by age 16.


    When Buddy Holly & The Crickets broke through
    nationally in 1957, they were marketed by Decca Records
    as two different acts whose records were released
    on two different Decca subsidiaries - Brunswick
    for Crickets records, Coral for Holly records. But
    there was no real musical distinction between the two,
    except perhaps that the "Crickets" sides had more
    prominent backup vocals.


    This reissue marks the debut album credited to Buddy
    Holly. It features Holly's Top Ten single "Peggy Sue"
    plus several songs that have turned out to be standards:
    "I'm Gonna Love You Too," "Listen to Me," "Everyday,"
    "Words of Love," and "Rave On."

    One night during a one-time, two-week engagement at the Five Spot produced enough music of lasting merit for three albums. When Rudy Van Gelder took his portable equipment down to the fabled Cooper Square jazz club on July 16, 1961, he captured the interaction of an extraordinary quintet.


    Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis and Ed Blackwell had formed a cooperative group and, if LIttle had not died in October 1961, there is no doubt that it would have been a potent force in the music of the 1960s and beyond. Dolphy himself died in June 1964, after establishing himself as one of the important contemporary reedmen. Here his alto saxophone and bass clarinet and Little's trumpet explore three originals: The Prophet by Dolphy, Bee Vamp by Little, and Fire Waltz by Waldron.     She was the sultry film starlet-turned-torch singer-come-TV actress whose dusky alto captivated a generation. Julie London was discovered while running a department store elevator in Hollywood.


    Just three years earlier the bountiful 15-year-old, born Julie Peck to her parents, a song-and-dance duo of the vaudeville era, was singing on her parents' radio show. When she started working in the movies in the 1940s, she changed her name to London. During the course of a celebrated career in acting and music, she made more than 30 albums.


    The sultry-voiced actress, who was once married to Dragnet producer-star Jack Webb, had a hit record with the 1950s single Cry Me a River. The single debuted in 1955, sold three million copies and remained in demand into the 1960s.


    Analogue Productions has brought back Julie Is Her Name Volume 2, making it an undeniable classic in every sense of the word.     Julie Is Her Name - Volume Two has all the sincerity and warmth of her professional album debut, the best-selling Julie Is Her Name, from Liberty. An untested singer with uncompromising musical faith, an unknown record company, sophisticated, tastefully presented standards presented simply backed by just a bass and guitar - Julie Is Her Name faced long odds of success. Yet it soared to become a best-selling hit. Julie London rose to the Top 10 of every list of female vocalists.


    And as to the cover, expect only top-notch reproduction for our Analogue Productions reissue. Originally a single LP jacket, we've upgraded to a gatefold incorporating more original photographs provided by Universal.


    London appeared in nearly two dozen motion pictures during the 1940s and '50s; she was best known to TV audiences as nurse Dixie McCall on the 1970s hospital drama Emergency! She was hired on Emergency! by Webb, her then-former spouse, to co-star with her second husband, jazz musician Bobby Troup. Troup, who composed the iconic musical hit Route 66 played a doctor on the show and it was he who helped sign Julie to the Liberty record label.


    Describing her smoky vocal style, London once said, It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to a microphone. But it is a kind of over-smoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate. A style inimitable, in our estimation.

    With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.


    Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.


    But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.


    Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.


    Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

    Masterpieces By Ellington shines from an astonishingly brief period of history that gave the recording industry two of its greatest achievements - the introduction of magnetic tape recording and the 33 1/3 LP, or long-playing record.


    Four years. That's all it took to go from the discovery by Americans, of German advancements in the field of sound recording, to the marketing of tape decks in the U.S. by the Ampex company, to Columbia's unveiling of its 12" LP, and the first long-playing record to be sold to consumers.


    The four selections contained here catapulted the Maestro Ellington into the LP era, as the great composer/arranger/pianist and his matchless orchestra took full advantage of the possibilities afforded by magnetic tape recording and the still-new 33 1/3 RPM LP to, for the first time, capture uncut concert arrangements of their signature songs.

    Country Joe & The Fish full-length debut is their most joyous and cohesive statement and one of the most important and enduring documents of the psychedelic era, the band's swirl of distorted guitar and organ at its most inventive. In contrast to Jefferson Airplane, who were at their best working within conventional song structures, and the Grateful Dead, who hadn't quite yet figured out how to transpose their music to the recording studio, Country Joe & the Fish delivered a fully formed, uncompromising, and yet utterly accessible - in fact, often delightfully witty - body of psychedelic music the first time out. Ranging in mood from good-timey to downright apocalyptic, it embraced all of the facets of the band's music, which were startling in their diversity: soaring guitar and keyboard excursions (Flying High, Section 43, Bass Strings, The Masked Marauder), the group's folk roots (Sad and Lonely Times), McDonald's personal ode to Grace Slick (Grace), and their in-your-face politics (Superbird). Hardly any band since the Beatles had ever come up with such a perfect and perfectly bold introduction to who and what they were, and the results - given the prodigious talents and wide-ranging orientation of this group - might've scared off most major record labels. Additionally, this is one of the best-performed records of its period, most of it so bracing and exciting that one gets some of the intensity of a live performance.     About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

    Edward Joseph Mahoney, a Brooklyn-born second-generation cop who eventually ditched his badge and gun to pursue his rock star dreams as Eddie Money - struck gold right off the bat with his 1977 self-titled debut album.


    The record's leadoff single, Baby Hold On, was actually its biggest hit, but the follow-up single Two Tickets to Paradise, was a sort of spiritual cousin to Bruce Springsteen's Rosalita (Come Out Tonight). It's written from the perspective of a young guy who's desperately trying to convince his girlfriend to ignore her disapproving parents and come away with him on a trip so far away from here. With its smooth production, urgent uptempo chorus, and insistent melodic hook, Tickets was a natural for late '70s FM radio - where it found an immediate home, eventually working its way all the way up to No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.


    Although Money might have written Two Tickets to Paradise to convince a specific girl to leave town with him, its title became shorthand for that end-of-the-work-week feeling you get when you've fulfilled all of your responsibilities to the Man and you're free to relax without obligations for a little while - like, say, at at an Eddie Money concert, where Tickets has remained a constant fixture of the set list for more than 30 years.

    Analogue Productions set out to produce the ultimate test record.


    We've consulted many experts in the field, including mastering engineers, audio experts, turntable experts and audiophile listeners, to create a test record that's never been made before. When Barry Wolifson from Sterling Sound in New York City called us with the same idea we had been thinking about - that being to create the ultimate test record - he and our audio expert Clark Williams began to brainstorm and research ideas until they were both completely satisfied with what should go on the record.


    Most of the test records in the past have been made to test a variety of equipment. This test record excludes silly cannon shots, typewriters, voices on one channel and other useless fluff. This one specifically addresses your turntable and cartridge. It's designed to provide the basic test signals necessary to calibrate a turntable or cutting lathe as simply as possible. Most of the signals have specific implications, but it is certainly possible to use them in any number of novel ways.


    This record was mastered and cut on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe at Sterling Sound and pressed at Record Technology, Inc. on high-quality, 180-gram virgin vinyl.


    Side 1

    General Reference Level

    This 1 kHz reference tone will allow you to establish a "base level" for all measurements.
    Track 1 1Khz reference tone 7cm/s Mono, in phase (Lateral)

    Basic reference for all measurements, adjust meter for maximum convenience (in the studio 0VU).
    Adjust preamp channel balance for equal output.
    Also used to check the offset angle of the photo cartridge; L&R signals should be exactly in phase as displayed on an oscilloscope.


    Azimuth Adjustment

    Track 2 1kHz reference level Left channel only

    Measure Right channel output.

    Track 3 1kHz reference level Right channel only

    Measure Left channel output.

    The object is to sit the stylus exactly perpendicular in the groove.

    Twist cartridge about its radial axis until the measurements from Track 2 and Track 3 are equal or very close to equal for both channels.


    High Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are used to calibrate the RIAA high frequency equalizer of a phono preamp. This will be used to calibrate a mastering lathe's phono preamplifier or any phono preamplifier that has these adjustments.

    Track 5 10 kHz reference tone at -20dbu, Lateral
    Adjust the high frequency until the output level equals that of Track 4.

    Track 6 1 kHz to 20 kHz sweep at -20dbu, Mono (Lateral)

    The AC millivoltmeter reading should stay constant across all frequencies. There are a number of factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the 10 kHz adjustment, a better overall frequency response can be achieved.


    Low Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 7 & 8 are used to calibrate the RIAA low frequency equalizer of a phono preamp.

    Track 7 1 kHz to 20 Hz sweep at 0 VU (Lateral)

    Play Track 7 and measure the output with your AC millivolt meter.

    Ideally, the output will be flat across all frequencies. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the amplitude would remain constant during the frequency downsweep.

    Track 8 100 Hz reference tone at 0 vu (Lateral)
    Adjust LF Eq to reference (which is your reading from Track 1).


    Track 9 VTA adjust

    This is an IEC intermodulation distortion (IMD) test signal; 60Hz & 4kHz 4:1 ratio.

    Using an IMD tester, adjust VTA by raising or lowering the tonearm for minimum distortion.


    Track 10 Standard Wow & Flutter test signal; 3150Hz
    The Wow & Flutter meter will give dynamic speed variations as a percentage deviation from nominal.

    Also, the frequency counter should read exactly 3150 Hz for nominal speed. You can use the Hz function on your multi-meter (if so equipped) to verify speed here as well. You can also use to find the measurements at 45RPM. The correct reading at 45RPM would be 4253 Hz (45/33.33) x 3150.


    Side 2

    Track 1 Anti-skating test; 315Hz amplitude sweep to +12dbu (Lateral)

    Signal should remain clean in both channels up to the highest level, both audibly and as viewed on an oscilloscope. In case of distortion, increase anti-skating force or decrease anti-skate until breakup occurs equally in both channels. The left channel information is inscribed on the inner groove wall, the right channel information, on the outer groove wall. Because of the offset angle of a pivoted tonearm, a constantly varying vector force biases the arm towards the center of the record causing the stylus to lose contact with the outer (i.e. right channel) groove wall. Both linear and modulated groove velocity, tracking force, stylus profile, and vinyl composition are contributing factors. The anti skating force attempts to ameliorate this by applying an opposing similar force.

    It is also accepted that the overall force vector increases as the tonearm approaches closer to the spindle or end of the record.


    Track 2 Pink noise lateral

    Track 3 Pink noise vertical

    Used for cartridge "demagnetizing"

    You can also use this track to loosen up the cantilever's suspension to help break in a new cartridge. Play these tracks five to ten times after every 300 hours of normal LP playback.


    Track 4 1kHz @ reference level, vertical
    This out-of-phase signal should cancel to nothing when summed to mono.

    Any signals still present are distortion artifacts, lack of channel balance, or timing (phase) anomalies. This test can be a second confirmation of anti-skate adjustment.


    Track 5 1kHz to 10Hz sweep @ -20 below

    Resonance anomalies in the tonearm / cartridge interface will show up as amplitude peaks and dips as the frequency sweeps down.

    Once again, by listening in 'Mono' it is easier to hear the distortion artifacts.


    Track 6 Silent groove for bearing rumble and table isolation

    During playback of this track, nothing should be transmitted from the turntable to the speakers. Replay the track and gently tap on the rack or base that the turntable is resting on. There should be little or no thump transferred to the speakers. This track will help you experiment with turntable isolation methods and products to be able to get the most out of your playback system. You may want to use a closed or sealed headphone for best listening results, or a stethoscope on the plinth.
