    Aretha's Gold

Astonishing Collection of The Queen of Soul's Greatest Songs for Atlantic Records: Aretha's Gold Includes Nine Top Ten Hits: Respect, Chain of Fools, and Think Among Them

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Pressed at RTI: Breathtaking Sonics on Mobile Fidelity 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold Get to the Heart of Franklin's Range, Emotions, Expressiveness

Aretha Franklin made her Hall of Fame reputation at Atlantic Records between 1967-1968. This astonishing two-year period witnessed the singer score nine Top 10 hits and define soul music, a era chronicled on Aretha's Gold. Pairing with producer Jerry Wexler and a flawless Muscle Shoals studio band, Franklin unleashed bolder sides of her artistry kept under wraps during her tenure at Columbia. The rest is history - a history that, until now, has never been in heard in true audiophile sound. And if there's any voice you want to experience to the most realistic extent, it's that of the vocalist Rolling Stone crowned the Greatest Singer of All Time.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold presents Franklin's most seminal early Atlantic songs with reference-standard sonics. Finally, hear the full range of the Queen of Soul's depth, reach, and expressiveness. Complementing her timeless classics with tremendous dynamics, restored balances, and stunning clarity, this collectible analog set sheds new light on Franklin's power and technique, honesty and confidence, enunciation and directness.

Hear why Franklin is even better than you likely think or remember. You just haven't been able to hear the Detroit native on a format that mirrors exactly what went down in the studios when she recorded songs that, to this day, remain the bar by which all other singers are measured. The same goes for Franklin's backing band, known as the Swampers, whose instrumental savvy, feel, and textures are so unique, the group is credited with creating its own style: The Muscle Shoals Sound. On this vinyl edition of Aretha's Gold, experience every picked guitar note, brushed snare, and fluid bass line. Seldom has a band and vocalist ever made a more formidable, memorable, and emotional combination.

The evidence plays out across these 14 songs, each a soul landmark, each unforgettable thanks to Franklin's impassioned performances and empowering attitude. The Sweet Impressions (Franklin's backing vocalists) and sweeping string arrangements bolster the foundation, but the material belongs to Franklin. A veritable hit parade, the track listing on Aretha's Gold reads like a dictionary of soul.

I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You), Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Since You've Been Gone (Sweet Sweet Baby), Think, The House That Jack Built, I Say a Little Prayer, Baby I Love You: All Top 10 hits. Plus five more tunes, including a riveting cover of Sam Cooke's You Send Me, that charted.

You know the songs by heart. You know the voice by memory. But you've never quite known them so intimately. Aretha's Gold on Mobile Fidelity gives the Queen the royal treatment she deserves.

Aretha Franklin will be forever known as The Queen Of Soul and one of the original classic soul pioneers like Ray
Charles, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett who had a knack of mastering funk grooves drenched in gospel, soul, rock
    and pop.

Aretha Franklin created some of the greatest sides ever for Atlantic, where she spent almost two decades creating
some of the most masterful and beautiful soul music ever waxed.

In 1969, Aretha was honored with her first greatest hits collection by our good friends at Atlantic Records simply
titled Aretha's Gold. This stunning array of her biggest #1's and other smash hit singles, most of them featuring Duane
Allman, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Roger Hawkins, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson, dominated the top
of the soul and pop charts for over a year. Her songs and soulful delivery on these hits truly illustrate how important her
force was then and still is today, over four decades since!

Aretha was important in bridging all types of rhythm and blues music to a much wider audience, churning out not
only soul smashes but pop masterpieces. Most of her biggest hits have been covered by many artists over the years as
well. Jam packed with the original Atlantic recordings of solid senders like her classics Chain of Fools, See Saw, Baby, I
Love You and of course Respect, Aretha's Gold is virtually an encyclopedia of SOUL!

Even more soul and pop classics abound as you'll hear her scream and shout with the best of the blues with Dr.
Feelgood, one of her most beautiful ballads with (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, and her soulful touch on Burt
Bacharach's classic I Say a Little Prayer. This #1 charting 1969 LP hasn't been available on vinyl for many decades...
    that is until now!

Friday Music is very proud to announce for the first time ever the stunning 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of
Aretha's Gold. Mastered from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol
Mastering in Hollywood, these classic tracks truly reach sonic heights in the audiophile vinyl domain. We have also
included the original artwork elements by Haig Adishian, the classic photo of Aretha Franklin by James J. Kreigsman, as
well as the original back cover studio session photo collage not seen in LP cover form in years!

Charles, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and others, we feel this stunning Aretha Franklin 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl will

Aretha Live At Fillmore West (Speakers Corner)

Live recordings come up with extremely different results: most of them land in the rubbish bin, some of them are available as bootleg copies when a star's career has ended and are passed on conspiratorially from one excited collector to another. Only a very few conserve real spirit and sheer enthusiasm, which no arranger or sound mixer can conjure up in the studio.

But even more sensational was Aretha Franklin's guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary concert hall in San Francisco, which closed down shortly afterwards. Everyone knew who was going to perform, and yet everything was quite different on these three nights in the spring of 1971: her usual show band was left behind in Detroit and she appeared with King Curtis And The Kingpins - one of the most impressive bands around - accompanied by the trailblazers Cornel Dupree (g) and Bernard Purdie (dr). The Memphis Horns, a fantastic horn section, blast away in the background, their keen as a razor backings rising up to soaring heights. From Billy Preston's fingertips on the organ flows an aura of spiritual energy and Ray Charles, who by chance (but how fortuitous!) was among the audience also got his appearance in the telling title Spirit In The Dark. No words need be lost about the queen on the cover. For without the superb albums of the late Sixties, Aretha Franklin would never have become the USA's first sister of soul nor would she have appeared in the Fillmore West.

    Musicians:

Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles (vocals, electric piano)

King Curtis (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)

    Billy Preston (organ)

    Truman Thomas (Electric Piano)

    Cornell Dupree (guitar)

    Jerry Jemmot (bass)

    Bernard Purdie (drums)

    Pancho Morales (conga)

Recording: February 1975 live at Fillmore West, San Francisco, by Ray Thompson

Production: Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Aretha With The Ray Bryant Combo (Speakers Corner)

As is well known, early relationships are not always blessed, and it is certainly no secret that the collaboration between Aretha Franklin and Columbia's record producer John H. Hammond did not last long. Hammond's later attempts to candy Franklin's irrepressible natural voice with sugary arrangements and studio gimmicks did not go down well with the public. On the first Franklin disc from Columbia, however, it was honeymoon all the way. With a successful mix of pop and jazz standards, the super talent - Aretha had just turned 18 years old - brought her vocal chords to vibrate. Fired on with youthful Élan, these evergreens sound so fresh, new and intoxicating that the question of their genre is quite irrelevant. From a seesawing R & B (Won't Be Long) via bell-like waves of melody (Over The Rainbow) right up to the freely styled, jazzy Gershwin classic It Ain't Necessarily So - everything is right there! The Ray Bryant Trio - augmented with winds - proves itself a formidable ensemble with true presence yet unobtrusive accompaniment. If you compare the mature performances of Aretha Franklin in her subsequent years with Atlantic, you will soon recognize that the later 'First Lady of Soul' was in full command of her profession right from the very beginning.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

Unforgettable: A Tribute To Dinah Washington (Speakers Corner)

These recordings were made before Aretha Franklin was honoured with such names as 'Lady Soul' or 'Soul Sister No. 1'. That the young, talented singer already possessed one of the most outstanding voices was confirmed by the great Dinah Washington who stated concisely but decisively: The girl has got soul.

The present tribute album was recorded just a few months after Washington's death and presents her most important and successful numbers, sung by her 23-year-old successor, who obviously feels quite comfortable when treading in the great singer's footsteps. In Unforgettable, a laid-back number with a string background, Aretha captivates the listener with her ever-changing vocal colouring and gospel-like ballad feeling. In the second number, Cold, Cold Heart, there is already evidence of a shimmering, subliminal blues nuance which is shot through with pointed harp phrases and the 'sucking' sound of the Hammond organ. While an old-fashioned bluesy style supported by a powerful bigband is characteristic of Evil Gal Blues, unconventional arrangements using obbligato trombone (Don't Say You're Sorry Again) are also found in this fascinating and highly varied line-up of numbers. Now, more than 40 years after its release, this album pays tribute to two unforgettable interpreters of black music.

    Yeah!!! (Pure Pleasure)

This 'live' nightclub date with a jazz trio, revealed to be a faked on the Columbia compilations that have since come out, is nonetheless a great LP, maybe the best single Columbia LP from Aretha. John Hammond discovered her and just wanted great music, but the label couldn't decide if she was a show tune singer, jazz or R&B and never figured out she was all of the above and deserved her own category. This is the most jazzy Aretha ever and if she'd wanted to concentrate on this one area of her talent, she would still be ruling it. Worth the buy just for the track "Without The One You Love".

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Aretha Live At Fillmore West

Aretha Franklin's 1971 album Live at Fillmore West was a seminal soul breakthrough. It finally cemented her status beyond soul audiences and it matched her with a phenomenal rhythm section in King Curtis and the Kingpins. Franklin adroitly mixed pop, rock, and soul material throughout the three nights, including Stephen Stills' ''Love The One You're With,'' and Bread's ''Make It With You,'' and the Beatles' ''Eleanor Rigby,'' as well as true favorites ''Respect,'' ''Don't Play That Song,'' and ''Spirit in the Dark,'' which brought Ray Charles out of the audience for a spirited duet. Deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring photos from the concert and new liner notes by Down Beat contributor Mitch Myers (including fresh interviews with original album producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin). Dusty In Memphis

Ranked 89/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Britain's greatest pop diva Dusty Springfield was the finest white soul singer of her era and this landmark Atlantic Records album from 1969 is a masterpiece, a perfect marriage of pop and soul...contains her top 10 hit Son Of A Preacher Man plus several other hit singles and classic tracks...

Originally released in 1969, the concept for Dusty In Memphis was to take England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music which had inspired her. Produced by Atlantic's Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineered by Tom Dowd, the record's highlights include Son Of A Preacher Man, So Much Love, Breakfast In Bed, Just One Smile, I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore and Just A Little Lovin'. Springfield is backed by a crack band that had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley among others. The musicians - collectively known as the Memphis Cats - include guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Tommy Cogbill, drummer Gene Chrismann, pianist Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons on organ and electric piano. Songwriting contributions came from, among others, Randy Newman, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Dusty Springfield is one of the finest white soul singers of her era, and this is the undisputed proof.

The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack (Colored Vinyl)

Limited Edition 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Blue Vinyl

Comic actors John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd rightfully get credit for exposing many people to the music of Blues and R&B veterans. The soundtrack to their hugely successful musical comedy Blues Brothers was released on June 20, 1980 as the second album by the Blues Brothers Band, which also toured that year to promote the film.

The rollicking remake of the Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin' was a Billboard Top 20 hit, featuring an arrangement notable for the horn section that replaces Steve Winwood's rumbling organ work. Ray Charles has a good time with Shake a Tail Feather, and he's helped out by Jake and Elwood Blues (Belushi and Aykroyd, respectively). The cover of Solomon Burke's Everybody Needs Somebody to Love is a lot of fun, thanks to the great overall rhythm and Elwood's lightning-fast stage rap, while James Brown and the Reverend James Cleveland Choir provide a blast of gospel music on Old Landmark. Aretha Franklin's Think is explosive, and Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher is slyly irresistible.

    The Spinners

The Spinners Spinners On Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP From Mobile Fidelity

Spinners' Silky Smooth 1972 Self-titled Record Birthed The Philadelphia Soul Sound: Includes Top 5 Hits I'll Be Around And Could It Be I'm Falling In Love

Mastered From The Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP Presents Groundbreaking Soul Album With Pristine Detail, Soothing Warmth, And Involving Emotionalism

Sweeping Strings, Funk Rhythms, Brassy Rejoinders, Immaculate Harmonies, And Satiny Lead Singing Fill Thom Bell's Melodic Arrangements: Few Albums Sound Creamier Than This Watershed Effort

The timeless music and expert arrangements are about the only things smoother than the powder-blue suits sported by the Spinners on the cover of their resplendent self-titled 1972 record. The band's first album for Atlantic after departing Motown, Spinners ranks as an all-time soul classic - a filler-free set boasting immaculate harmonies, sweet melodies, and impeccably matched vocals. Thom Bell's flawless production puts it all over the top. Yielding an ideal balance of lushness and grit, the collaboration between the Detroit-based group and studio veteran yielded a record that birthed the celebrated Philadelphia Sound. Now, you can finally experience it in audiophile-grade sonics.

Mastered from the original tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited-edition 180g LP of Spinners presents the quintet's magnum opus with pristine detail, soothing warmth, and involving emotionalism. Free of previously constraining ceilings, highs soar to their intended heights. Each singer's voice can be distinctly heard amidst the expert mix. Superb dynamics, soundstaging, and imaging highlight Bell's gorgeous orchestrations as well as the Spinners' pillow-soft mellifluousness. Backing instrumentation, ranging from rolling bass lines and punctual horns to swaying strings and crisp high-hat beats, unfolds with reference-caliber purity and transparency. Not many 1970s albums of any genre sound silkier, creamier, or more tonally rich than this LP.

While the career-defining performances within the grooves cannot be overlooked, Spinners remains equally notable for its historical importance. At the dawn of the 70s, Motown still held sway as the dominant soul style. Yet the Spinners' decision to move to Atlantic - prompted by a suggestion by Aretha Franklin - and refashion their approach with Bell signaled a sea change that ushered in a smoother, sweeter variety of R&B punctuated with sweeping strings, jazzy flourishes, brassy replies, and funk rhythms. Few, if any, vocal groups mesh these traits more convincingly, pleasingly, and naturally than the Spinners on this watershed effort.

Anchored by Top 5 smashes like Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Spinners signaled the beginning of a partnership with Bell that lasted seven years and elevated the band to stardom. Indeed, even in spite of the four hit singles, the record remains defined by an artistic consistency, watertight focus, and collective unity that make everything here deserving of close attention. Flush with catchy hooks and pop accents, each song is treated as a potential anthem. Laden with depth and richness, Bell's savvy, wide-open arrangements frame the Spinners' satiny singing with sensual class and refined delicacy.

Heaven-sent voices do the rest. Making his first appearance on record as a member, Philippe Wynne treats the carefully honed material as a breakout session for his dulcet tenor on tracks such as One of a Kind (Love Affair). Not to be outdone, the equally measured Bobbie Smith mesmerizes with his deft phrasing, reedy timbre, and sparkling clarity, never finer than on the million-selling I'll Be Around. Solo or paired together, Wynne and Smith's glorious leads run the gamut from upbeat and optimistic to sad and forlorn, forming the backbone of a masterwork that addresses romance (Just You and Me Baby), regret (How Could I Let You Get Away), and social ills (Ghetto Child) with consummate passion.

    In The Right Place

Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin to name a few. He also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. Several of his many career highlights include the masterful album Sun, Moon and Herbs in 1971 which included cameos from Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger and 1973's In The Right Place, which contained the chart hits Right Place Wrong Time and Such A Night.

    Import

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Original 1980 Soundtrack

First Pressing Of 2000 Numbered Copies On Blue Vinyl

Donny Hathaway will be forever known as one of the leading voices of the
70's soul renaissance and truly one of the more championed songwriters during his
short lifetime. Thanks to today's respect and care given to his music by a whole new
generation of musicians and fans, Donny Hathaway forever reigns as one of soul's
pioneers. Much like Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and other superstars before him,
Donny had the necessary ingredients of a stellar voice/musicianship and songwriting
acumen which successfully reached across all gospel, soul, rock and pop genres

Donny Hathaway created some of the greatest sides ever for ATCO, where he
spent his time on earth creating some of the most masterful and beautiful soul music
    ever waxed.

In 1978, Donny was honored with his first greatest hits collection simply titled
The Best of Donny Hathaway. This stunning array of his most memorable hit singles
and stellar album staples, most of them featuring Joel Dorn, Billy Cobham, Arif Mardin,
Jerry Wexler, Eric Gale, Bernard Purdie, King Curtis, Doc Gibbs and Cornell Dupree,
continues to illustrate how important a force he was then and still is today, over four
    decades since!

The Best of Donny Hathaway features a heavy menu of his finest moments like
the funk infused The Ghetto, the definitive balladry of Leon Russell's A Song For You,
and of course his duet chart topper with Roberta Flack Where Is The Love, which truly
opened up a worldwide audience to this sorely missed genius.

Even more classics abound as you'll hear the only vinyl release versions of
his beautiful last top charting r&b ballad You Were Meant For Me and his standard
holiday gem This Christmas. The fine LP also includes one of the more poignant songs
of our time Someday We'll All Be Free which is truly a milestone song for this artist.
This 1978 Greatest Hits LP hasn't been available on vinyl for many decades... that
    is until now!

    Rocks The House

First Time On Vinyl Including Bonus Tracks

Pressed On Blue Vinyl At Rainbo

Mastered By Kevin Gray (Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles)

Best known for the lush 1961 rendition of the ballad ''At Last'' - a slow-dance staple at wedding celebrations everywhere, she is also celebrated for having recorded one of the best live albums of all time, ''Rocks the House.'' Recorded in 1963 at the New Era Club in Nashville, James is captured at her performance peak. The foundation for her reputation as a fiery no-holds-barred performer was firmly established in this recording.

Blues, soul, jazz, R&B, and rock vocalist Etta James, needs no introduction. An icon from early rock'n'roll's pantheon of divas, she has inspired 5 decades of listeners and fellow artists with her vocal stylings. From Janis Joplin to Beyonce, her expressive and guttural style has been imitated but never quite matched.

Jackpot Records is honored to release this momentous record on stellar blue vinyl, with the original album artwork and including 3 bonus tracks which have only ever been released previously on CD. Her powerful version of ''Something's Got a Hold on Me'' will shake you. Her impassioned version of ''All I Could Do Is Cry,'' will break you.
