Byrd At The GateTo a great many people, the name of Charlie Byrd and the updated samba beat known as bossa nova will always be intertwined. The guitarist did play a most important role in the introduction into this country of the compelling Brazilian rhythm-first on that major hit with Stan Getz and then on his own Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros. But before, during, and after the craze, Byrd was capable of much more-a remarkable impoviser and a richly versatile in-person performer. This 1963 live session at a celebrated New York club, the Village Gate, offers a little South American flavor and a lot of other jazz elements, including the guest appearance of trumpet great Clark Terry.

The Piper At The Gates Of DawnPink Floyd's debut album released in 1967, featuring the original line-up of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason.
The title of Pink Floyd's debut album is taken from a chapter in Syd Barrett's favorite children's book, The Wind in the Willows, and the lyrical imagery of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is indeed full of colorful, childlike, distinctly British whimsy, albeit filtered through the perceptive lens of LSD. Barrett's catchy, melodic acid pop songs are balanced with longer, more experimental pieces showcasing the group's instrumental freak-outs, often using themes of space travel as metaphors for hallucinogenic experiences -- Astronomy Domine is a poppier number in this vein, but tracks like Interstellar Overdrive are some of the earliest forays into what has been tagged space rock. But even though Barrett's lyrics and melodies are mostly playful and humorous, the band's music doesn't always bear out those sentiments -- in addition to Rick Wright's eerie organ work, dissonance, chromaticism, weird noises, and vocal sound effects are all employed at various instances, giving the impression of chaos and confusion lurking beneath the bright surface.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn successfully captures both sides of psychedelic experimentation -- the pleasures of expanding one's mind and perception, and an underlying threat of mental disorder and even lunacy; this duality makes Piper all the more compelling in light of Barrett's subsequent breakdown, and ranks it as one of the best psychedelic albums of all time.

Nina At The Village Gate (Pure Pleasure)In the intimate ambiance of The Village Gate, Nina Simone made pure magic with her voice and on the keyboard, one Manhattan evening back in 1961. She sang and played with a trio, which featured her favorite guitarist, Al Shackman. We are so fortunate that the moment was captured and recorded.
I can't really categorize Nina's sound or her music and call her 'just' a fabulous jazz vocalist. Although, she plays extraordinary jazz with her voice, as in Just In Time. She has been often called a musical anomaly, because there is no one category for her work. She was trained as a classical pianist, and in cuts like Bye Bye Blackbird, the complexity of her piano comes through loud and clear. Her folk songs, like the biting House Of The Rising Sun, and Zungo, an African work song, place her at the top of a long list of folk singers. Ms. Simone's gospel songs, i.e., Children Go Where I Send You, can raise the roof and bring down the house, as she did at the Gate in '61. She is a protest singer, Brown Baby, and an actress, capable of an extraordinary range of emotions.
Nina has the rare ability to dig into her material and bring unexpected meaning to familiar lyrics. She is eclectic with her taste and her repertoire. But whatever touches Nina, and whatever Nina touches, will reach you and evoke an emotional response. Her music is as fresh today, as it was 42 years ago, singing for that Manhattan audience. They could not have loved her more then, than we do now.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Just In Time

Winter's GateWinter's Gate is the 7th studio album from the Finnish melodic death metal band from Joensuu, Finland. The core 3 members have been intact since their debut in 2002.
It's a concept album made up of one epic 40 minute song. The album is built around a short story, Winter's Gate (Talven portti in Finnish), written by vocalist & bassist Niilo SevÄnen, recipient of numerous Finnish awards and nominations. The compelling short story is about a group of Vikings who set out to find a fabled island west of Ireland, despite the treacherous winter drawing near. The full story will be released together with the album as a book with translations in English, Finnish and German, and illustrated by the artist Teemu TÄhkÄnen.
Early on, Insomnium were inspired by bands such as their legendary countrymen Amorphis and Sentenced, Paradise Lost, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates and Opeth. Since their 2002 debut, tour by tour the passionate musicians edged their way to the very top of the scene and have by now become the spearhead of melodic death metal made in Finland.1. Different Connection Types & Longer Lengths Available Upon Request
Note: All cables in our Bridges & Falls Series place their left and right channels in a single jacket, and feature our Asymmetrical Double-Balanced geometry with separate high-quality positive and negative conductors. This design allows for a thin, flexible, and uniquely versatile high-performance cable that can be terminated with a variety of today's connections, including 3.5mm (male or female), DIN, and RCA. In Bridges & Falls, you'll find better metals and more sophisticated technologies - including Air-Tube insulation, Dielectric-Bias System, and Noise-Dissipation System - at lower prices than ever before. Do keep in mind, however, that, by necessity, the plugs on Bridges & Falls cables are fairly close together. If the L and R inputs of your components are more than 3 (7.6cm) apart, please consider models from our Rivers or Elements Series.
The nearly magical confluence of land and sea where the San Francisco Peninsula reaching up from the south, and Marin County stretching down from the north, almost touch, was named "Chrysopylea," meaning "golden gate," by Captain John C. Fremont in 1846. The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world from 1937 to 1964, when New York City's Verrazano Narrows surpassed it by a mere 18 meters (60 ft). The main span is 1,280 meters (4,200 ft) long and 27 meters (90 ft) wide, the towers rise to 227 meters (746 ft) above the water.
SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER (PSC) CONDUCTORS: Perfect-Surface Copper has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal-processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low-distortion conductor. For over 30 years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by this huge leap in performance. PSC clearly outperforms previous AQ metals that cost over ten times as much. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Golden Gate's very clean sound.
FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Golden Gate uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.
METAL-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.
ASYMMETRICAL DOUBLE-BALANCED GEOMETRY: Purpose designed for single-ended applications, Asymmetrical Double-Balanced Geometry offers a relatively lower impedance on the ground for a richer, and more dynamic experience. While many single-ended cable designs use a single path for both the ground and the shield, Double-Balanced designs separate the two for cleaner, quieter performance.
COLD-WELDED, GOLD-PLATED TERMINATIONS: This plug design allows for a connection devoid of solder, which is a common source of distortion. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability.$65.95Analog-Audio Interconnect Cable (Pair) - Multiple Lengths Available Buy Now
Straight From The Gate (Pre-Order)Import
The Headhunters' Straight From The Gate was their 2nd album and was released in 1977. Originally started as a jazz-fusion band fronted by Herbie Hancock, members Paul Jackson, Bennie Maupin, Michael Clark, Paul Potyen, Derrick Youman and Obsidion Blackbiyrd delved further into jazz-rock and fusion sounds and recorded the album at The Automatt studios in San Francisco.
The Headhunters use a wide range of instruments. From the electric piano to tenor and soprano saxophone, flute, sitar, electric and acoustic guitar as well as adopting an early ARP synthesizer. Their music is certainly a blend of many styles and genres, including R&B, funk, and African rhythms and it is widely accepted that The Headhunters made their mark on the serious jazz scene.1. In poll after poll, this LP is hailed as one of the greatest records of all time and quite possibly the greatest live recording ever made. And now this 1964 classic makes a welcome reappearance on vinyl. Jerry Lee Lewis was never in better form, and his backing group, the Nashville Teens try to keep up as he jumps from one classic to another. His reading of Your Cheating Heart is still definitive and Whole Lotta Shakin' is arguably one of the greatest version ever recorded.
Forty-five years later, we can re-live that night on the Reeperbahn. For those who bought the original LP, Bear Family's remastering will enable you to listen to it anew, for those who missed it, there's no excuse now. As a bonus, Bear Family has included one song, Down The Line, missing from the original LP. Paranoia (Awaiting Repress)Swedish crustpunk horde Martyrdöd are among the newest crop of heavy, brutal, metallic crust-influenced bands to join the Southern Lord cult.
In a scene overabundant with clones of the founding/front running acts of the genre, Martyrdöd manage to remain heavily unique in their filth-ridden approach. While undeniably influenced by acts like Anticimex, Bathory, and TotalitÄr, the band intertwines their crust roots with sinister, haunting soundscapes and unique blackened riff attacks.
Paranoia was recorded at the infamous Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Amon Amarth, Opeth) by Fredrik Nordström in the dead of a chilling Swedish winter! Lunar StrainIn the metal world, In Flames has served as a bridge between the death metal/black metal underground and the more melodic power metal of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensrÿche. Originally released in Europe in 1994, In Flames' debut album, Lunar Strain, attracted an interesting mixture of death metal/black metal, power metal, and thrash metal enthusiasts. Like the early releases of At the Gates, Lunar Strain helped write the book on what came to be known as melodic death metal -- an approach that combines death metal elements (extreme vocals, blastbeats) with the type of intricacy, musicality, and craftsmanship one expects from old-school masters like Dio, Maiden, Priest, and Black Sabbath. Most death metal favors brutality for the sake of brutality, but Lunar Strain does not govern by brute force alone and is -- by power metal standards -- much more accessible than the albums that extreme bands like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Carcass were coming out with at the time. In 1994, the best was yet to come for In Flames; even so, this was a promising debut that had a major impact on melodic death metal and symphonic black metal.

Take Refuge In Clean LivingRemastered For Vinyl From Original Recordings
Opening with a nod to Syd Barret's Pink Floyd (Piper at the Gates of Dawn) Take Refuge In Clean Living begins with morse code and drops into one of the heaviest slow-burn grooves in the Grails canon. Sounding something like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Blade Runner, it's lysergic and earthy for Grails in a new way. The rest of the record moves from blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music. The touring incarnation of Grails in 2006 and 2007 included good friend and drummer Ben Nugent, allowing Emil Amos to switch to 3rd guitar for the band's live instrumentation. The DNA of this guitar-heavy line-up allowed for new kinds of arrangements and bigger melodies. In early 2007, the then-5-piece entered Steven Lobdell's (Faust) Audible Alchemy studio to document the new songs written with this augmented ensemble. Those sessions make up Take Refuge In Clean Living.
Remastered for vinyl and reissued for the first time in nearly a decade, Take Refuge In Clean Living sees Grails pulling back their already wide lens on multiple sonic horizons. Grails often take what would sound over-ambitious on paper and make it sonically flow in an effortless, laid-back style. The band is defined by exploration and they've created a template for themselves where any style or method can be ingested to reap legitimate rewards. Take Refuge In Clean Living rightly suggested that Grails wouldn't run out of ideas.1. Stoned at the Taj Again

Although Burning Witch only actually existed for a short period of time (19951998) the absolutely crushing impact they left is immense! This box compiles every authorized recording the band ever made on a 4LP set with a 40 page book and a bonus DVD of live Burning Witch performances thrown in for good measure.
Towers was recorded by Steve Albini during the vernal equinox in 1996 at Robert Lang Studios, Seattle. Originally released as a demo tape in 1996 then released by Slap-A-Ham on vinyl in 1998. Southern Lord released a CD version (including Rift.Canyon.Dreams) in 1998. Remastered from the original 1/2 master tape (lost until this version) by Mell Dettmer.
Rift.Canyon.Dreams was recorded by Aaron Evil during the autumnal equinox in 1997 at Robert Lang Studios, Seattle. Originally released by Merciless Records on LP in 1998. Not only is this LP super rare, the covers were very flimsy so most existing copies have a lot of cover damage! Southern Lord released a CD version (including Towers) in 1998.
Bleeder b/w Rift.Canyon.Dreams. Bleeder was an unreleased track from the Towers Albini session. It originally came out on the split CD with Goatsnake on Hydra Head in 2000, now out of print. This song has never been released on vinyl (although test pressings for the Goatsnake split were made, finished vinyl was never produced). The Rift.Canyon.Dreams track was an unfinished outtake from the Rift.Canyon.Dreams session. It was mixed/completed by Dahlquist & Randall Dunn circa 2003 and then released on a split with ASVA (BW bassists Stuart Dahlquists then new project). The track was remixed by OMalley and Dunn in 2007 and released on the Crippled Lucifer 2CD reissue via SLR and is the version presented here.
Live at the China Club 1996. Raw, grim live evocation is the only Witch recording ever released with original 2nd guitarist Greg Anderson. This incantation was captured in Ballard, WA at the China Club (previously known as the Red Dragon) in 1996. The Witch was opening for At The Gates and Napalm Death. Anderson played 2 shows with Burning Witch, this being the second (and last!) This is the first time this is available on vinyl.
All LPs are pressed on 180g virgin black vinyl and are housed in high quality Stoughton printed tip-on and direct to board jackets. Also included in the set is a perfect bound 40 page 12 x 12 book. An aggressive visual documentation of the history of Burning Witch featuring many never before seen photos plus graphics specifically chosen for this release and some liner notes from Aaron Turner (Hydra Head Records/ISIS) and Chris Dodge (SPAZZ, Slap-a-Ham Records).
Included bound into the book is a DVD of never before released Burning Witch performances. First is video of the bands first ever live show from the Pioneer Square Theater in Seattle, May of 1996. This is the lineup with Greg Anderson on 2nd guitar. The second is the infamous Burning Witch performance on Public Access television from 27 Live in Seattle, February of 1997. The DVD was edited by Alan Dubin (Khanate) and includes a menu and full credits.LP1 - Towers

Caves (Awaiting Repress)Her strength seems to reside in her ability to be musically versatile. Utilizing various orchestrations, Tristen weaves a glistening web of thoughtful and extremely mature melodies that tremble with undeniable power.
"Pop hooks and pure inspiration"
- NPR All Things Considered
Her addictive debut is full of such moments: catchy refrains with multiple meanings, ear-tugging melodies with hidden hooks. She flaunts a philosophy major's palette amidst echoes of vintage rockabilly and girl group pop: Gods battle, queens bid their rule, girlfriends enable druggy lovers.
- Rolling Stone
Tristen Gaspadarek has crafted a confident, poignant folk-pop debut that never wants for hooks, and manages to undercut its sing-songiness at every turn with unflinching lyrics and mature songwriting.
- The Onion AV Club
Tristen comes from Nashville, TN and the Jenny Lewis school of modern, God-fearing country, but she caught up to her contemporaries and surpassed them in one fell swoop. As soon as the vocals kick in on the opener Eager for Your Love, it's impossible not to listen to this record all the way through. Man this girl can sing.
"She's been Nashville's best-kept secret, but this single-named chanteuse is poised for bigger and better things with the recent release of her sprightly new album of baroque folk-pop. "Charlatans at the Garden Gate'' glimmers with traces of Neko Case, the Shangri-Las, and maybe just a touch of Loretta Lynn.
- The Boston Globe
With or without Tristen's acute capacity to portray relationships and ideology gone wrong, Charlatans is a musical document billowing over with rich, vintage hues and irrepressible hooks, her reverence for the lions of pop music and confident sense of self all meted out in the same breath.
This week, with the release of her confident debut, Tristen reminds us just what it was we loved about her to begin with.
She brings a blossoming pop sensibility to her witty, not-as-sweet-as-it-seems country.
