Regions Of Light And Sound Of God

Regions of Light and Sound of God is the first solo album from Jim James, the singer, songwriter and guitarist for My Morning Jacket. Over the course of fifteen years and six studio albums, James has been the focal point of a group that has grown into one of the most acclaimed and successful rock and roll bands in the world. With this project, he reaches into new territory that extends, but doesn't break from, My Morning Jacket's accomplishments.

Until now, James had never felt the call to create a longer-form album on his own. "I'm very lucky to play in a band with guys that I love, who are great at what they do," he says, "so on My Morning Jacket records, I don't have a need to play bass or keys or what have you. But as a person and as a musician, I love to play every instrument under the sun, and I wanted to make a record where I played all the instruments and produced/engineered it myself."

The results are nine songs that resist easy categorization, from the hazy space-funk of the opening "State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)" to the chiming, operatic pop of "A New Life." On Regions of Light and Sound of God, nothing is what it seems-touchstones from old-school R&B or island folk or hip-hop flicker into focus and then disappear; a delicate instrumental is titled "Exploding." It's complex but cohesive, intimate and hypnotic where My Morning Jacket might turn more wide-screen and epic.

"The album knew what it wanted to be," says James. "The songs would tell me what they wanted to be, and I just had to search around and find those sounds to bring them into this world."

    The Centre Cannot Hold

Mute is proud to announce The Centre Cannot Hold, the fifth album from acclaimed composer Ben Frost, his first since 2014's landmark A U R O R A. The album was recorded over ten days by Steve Albini in Chicago. An exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation, The Centre Cannot Hold is an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarines into sound. It forbids casual engagement, but rather seeks to engulf those who encounter it.

Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of midpace electronica, symphonic strings and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocals. It's Not up to You is as lovely as anything she's ever done and Cocoon, Pagan Poetry and Aurora are adrift in an enchanted reverie. The rich and visceral Vespertine is a landmark, a revelation and a truly fabulous achievement.

Eyes & Eyes & Eyes Ago

Soft and gentle songs featuring pump organs, acoustic guitars, banjos, singing saws, minimal drums, xylophones, sounds of nature, and delicate, childlike vocals, etc. It was recorded from October 27th, 1906 to January 8th, 1907 in Old Bennington, Vermont, except Aurora Borealis which was recorded around Easter 1907 on an island in Maine. Gallons used an 8 track tape recorder, tube preamps, tube compressors, and a lot of RCA ribbon microphones. He recorded and produced the album, singing most of the vocals through a phonograph flower.

    Church Mouth

While this new album maintains its artistic mix of aurora borealis-avant-indie pop and post-punk, Church Mouth paves a new musical path for the band. A departure from 2006's drum-machine and sequencer-heavy Waiter: You Vultures!, Church Mouth leans on Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, and Santana for inspiration. Front man John Gourley was also listening to a lot of Blind Willie Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson when he wrote the record. While most of us who grew up in the continental US were raised on Saturday morning cartoons and sugary cereal, Gourley's Alaskan upbringing was unorthodox; his youth spent exploring nature in one of the few virtually untouched territories left in the world. As a result, his striking enigmatic vision makes its mark on the band's packaging, merch design, videos, photos, posters, and the music.

    Scarecrow

A pop sensation in the 1980s, singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has evolved into one of rock's most enduring acts, and given voice to the small-town experience.

Scarecrow is the eighth album by John Mellencamp. Originally released in September 1985, it peaked at #2 on the U.S. chart behind Heart's comeback album, Heart.

This album contained three Top 10 hits, a record for a Mellencamp album: R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., which peaked at #2 in the U.S.; Lonely Ol' Night, which peaked at #6; and Small Town, which also peaked at #6. Lonely Ol' Night also peaked at #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, his second chart-topping single on this chart.

In 1989, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Scarecrow #95 on its list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s, saying: Scarecrow consolidated the band's rugged, roots-rock thrash and the ongoing maturation of Mellencamp's lyrics.

    Plain Spoken

John Cougar Mellencamp is an American rock singer-songwriter and musician. Mellencamp rose to superstardom in the 1980s while honing an almost
startingly plainspoken writing style that, starting in 1982, yielded a strong of Top 10 singles, including Hurts So Good, Jack & Diane, Crumblin'
Down, Pink Houses, Lonely Ol' Night, Small Town, R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Paper in Fire, and Cherry Bomb.

To date, John has released 21 studio albums. He has released 10 albums that have all been certified platinum or multi-platinum in the United States, and
Mellencampe has sold over 40illion albums worldwide throughout his career.

A Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, John Mellencampe recently signed a historic 'Lifetime' deal with Republic Records. Known as
The Voice of the Heartland, Mellencamp has touched the hearts and souls of music listeners and influenced American culture with enduring songs. His
22nd full-length album, Plain Spoken, is a stunningly elegant and soul-searching gem.

Produced by T Bone Burnett, Mellencamp continues to evolve artistically with Plain Spoken -- the first new music from the artist since 2010's critically
acclaimed No Better Than This, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 and received the honor of being on Rolling Stone's Best Albums of
2010 list. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has created an important body of work that has earned him both critical respect and an enormous audience.
An authoritative and eloquent storytellter who speaks to the sensibilities of the nation, Mellencamp is also one of the most successful live concert
performers in the world. A man with a conscience, he used his visibility and influence to advocate an issue that hit close to home and became one of the
founding members of Farm Aid, an organization that began in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farm. The Farm Aid concerts have raised
over $45 million to promote a resilient family farm system of agriculture.

    Beat Group

Originally released in the U.S. in 1966, Beat Group! was the American cousin to the Hollies' British LP Would You Believe?. However, identical cousins they were not: Beat Group! boasts substantially altered musical content and completely different cover art. Led by the snap-jangle-pop of the smash single, I Cant Let Go, the album is a thrilling combination of originals and R&B covers ripped from their riotous live sets. Highlights include commanding versions of Buddy Holly's Take Your Time, Sam and Dave's I Take What I Want and the Otis Redding/O.V. Wright classic That's How Strong My Love Is. Original songs Hard Hard Year, Oriental Sadness and Fifi the Flea, along with Mersey Beat staples A Taste of Honey and Mr. Moonlight round out the disc.

Out of print for decades, this classic album is FINALLY available again. Sourced from the aurally awesome original U.K. mono master, this LP is pressed on pristine 180-gram vinyl per your turntables request. Get in the queue!

Perhaps the most undervalued band of the original British Invasion, The Hollies hits are well known in the U.S. but their early albums are almost impossible to find! Taking their name from Buddy Holly and modeling their harmonies on the Everly Brothers, the Hollies gathered these American musical ingredients and whipped them into a wholly-UKnique concoction. Forging their sound to the east of their Liverpool brothers-in-beat, this Manchester quintet had it all: the soaring vocals of Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Tony Hicks; Hicks cascading, arpeggio-laden licks on guitar and a hard-hitting rhythm section driven by drummer extraordinaire Bobby Elliot. On top of that, their keen ears for top quality songs, written by the premier songsmiths of the day like teenage wunderkind Graham Gouldman, Chip Wild Thing Taylor and the stellar in-house writing team of Clarke/Hicks/Nash, ensured that their albums were extraordinary from start to finish. In short, they were a band that exuded greatness on all fronts. Now, as that greatness has been acknowledged by their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sundazed Music is proud to present meticulously restored vinyl editions of the rare U.S. mono versions of the Hollies third and fourth Imperial label albums, from 1966.

    The Crest

Axel Rudi Pells career began in 1980 with the band, Steeler, who sold over 30,000 copies of their commercially most successful release, Strike Back, and brought out their fourth and final album, Undercover Animal, in 1988. In November of that year, Pell formed his own group together with Jörg Deisinger (ex-Bonfire), drummer Jörg Michael, bassist Thomas Smuszynski (ex-U.D.O.) and the American vocalist, Charlie Huhn (Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Victory). Their debut album, Wild Obsessions, arrived at the stores one year later, followed by Nasty Reputation, for whom Pell enlisted the American frontman, Rob Rock (M.A.R.S, Impellitteri), who was replaced during the subsequent German tour by former Malmsteen vocalist, Jeff Scott Soto.

With Soto as a new member, the third album, Eternal Prisoner (1992), was undeniable proof that the band had found their own, unmistakable style. One year later, Pell brought out The Ballads, an album featuring his most accomplished rock ballads. With Between The Walls (1994) and the live recording, Made In Germany, the guitarist from Bochum held on to his typical style even in the post-grunge era. The subsequent Black Moon Pyramid (1996) was the second Pell album in succession to make the German album charts. 1997 saw the arrival of Pells eighth offering, Magic, featuring a thematically consistent concept based on supernatural stories. Magic also entered the charts, followed by Oceans Of Time, the commercially most successful album at that time by the Axel Rudi Pell band, and the continuation of Pells ballad concept (The Ballads II, 1999).

Following the departure of Jeff Scott Soto, Pell enlisted American vocalist Johnny Gioeli (ex-Hardline) for the production of Oceans Of Time, The Ballads III and his 2000 release, Masquerade Ball. His characteristic voice also enhanced the subsequent releases, Shadow Zone (2002) and Kings & Queens (2004), as well as the highly accomplished Mystica (2006) and the covers album, Diamonds Unlocked. Tales Of The Crown (2008), the last studio recording by the ARP Band surprised with a number of innovations and made it to # 41 of the German album charts. The Crest (2010) improved on this feat by going straight to # 22 in the German Charts.

There Is Nothing Left To Lose

Co-produced with Adam Kasper, the Foo Fighters third album There Is Nothing Left To Lose (1999) is as driven and blatant as the title suggests: powerful, compelling, deliberate, precise and engaging, all at once. Rather than rehash their previously successful songs (Big Me, This Is A Call, Monkey Wrench, Everlong, My Hero), on There Is Nothing Left To Lose, the Foo Fighters delivered a distinct mix of straight ahead rockers (Stacked Actors, Breakout, Generator), mid-tempo, thought-provoking, pop classics (Learn To Fly, Live-In Skin) and stunningly beautiful ballads (Aurora, Ain't It The Life, M.I.A. and Next Year) which combine for a dynamic, forceful mix from what has become one of rock 'n' roll's biggest bands.

    Music from the Mountain Provinces

"Our journals and recording equipment were ultimately
confiscated and stolen by the MNLF rebels. We escaped
with a single cassette, the clothes on our back, and our
    lives." -David Blair Stiffler

In 1988, David Blair Stiffler risked life and limb to document
under-recorded cultural groups living lives of extreme isolation in
the mountainous Philippine regions of Nueva Ecija, Aurora, and
Luzon. These are the fruits of that expedition.

In the grand tradition of ethnographic recordings that made up the
majority of Folkways' vast and significant catalog comes Music from
the Mountain Provinces. By the mid-1980s, David Blair Stiffler was
already a most-decorated recordist, with eight Folkways LPs under
his belt. These are among the most obscure documents in the entire
Folkways catalog (and that's quite a distinctive accomplishment,
given the illustrious company in that discography.) His focus
heretofore had largely been Central and South America, capturing
sounds from largely-hidden rain forest civilizations, including the
Palicour, Miskito, Arawak, Warrau, Cuna, Choco, and Pipil tribal
and cultural groups. He would match this flair for the unknown
and undocumented in his expedition to the Philippines. Although
the works of Jose Maceda and Nicole Revel heavily documented
much of the Philippines' countryside inhabitants with a thorough
and sober effort protracted over the decades. Stiffler brought his
own panache into the equation, capturing gorgeous and revelatory
moments from some of the archipelago's least visited regions. Even
without the harrowing tale of himself and his crew being taken
hostage, contained within is a rare aural experience. These masters,
originally intended for release on Folkways, were shelved when
Stiffler returned home to news of Folkways founder Moses Asch's
death. After the tragic event of last winter's disastrous and deadly
Typhoon Haiyan (or Yolanda), these documents are even more
    priceless.

"Dex Romweber was and is a huge influence on my music. I owned all of his records as a teenager, and was thrilled at the fact that we were able to play together recently on tour. [He is] is one of the best kept secrets of the rock n roll underground." -Jack White, White Stripes

For a quarter century, Dex Romweber has trolled the dark corners and back shelves of the haunted thrift store of Americana ephemera and honed an extraordinarily idiomatic sound, a particular and readily identifiable DEXness for those in the know. It's a creepy doll collection of surf, proto-rockabilly, garage, dark and vengeful blues, and nobody, but nobody, plays it like Dex. First with the legendary Flat Duo Jets and now with his Duo, Dex distilled the punk ethos of less-is-more to the essential guitar/drums template. Left in the wake of his lecherous and slithery Silvertone were early acolytes like Jack White, Neko Case, and the Reigning Sound as well as a current crop of the indie pack like Ty Segall, No Age, Japandroids, and The Black Keys. All owe an unclaimed pawn ticket of debt to his sublime and spine-tingling sound. He is a live wire back to the murky, sometimes dangerous and always unpredictable headwaters of real rock and roll.

Dex, with his whip-wristed sister Sara Romweber on drums, take Images 13 through neon-lit alleys, full of pulp fiction juvey rock, sci-fi theme songs and greasy denim hipster jive. Effortlessly versatile and raucously dismissive of genre constraints, exciting and darkly romantic, Images 13 would make everyone from Duane Eddy to Stan Kenton to Lenny Bruce crack a smile, a joke or the seal on a fifth of rye and head for the Naugahyde ice bucket.

Recorded at Rick Miller's (Southern Culture on the Skids) Kudzu Ranch studio in North Carolina, the album bristles with a sense of drama, of tension, of release, of mystery. "Roll On" and "Long Battle Coming" display the cinematic sleaze nestled between The Cramps and West Side Story. Eerie ballads "Baby I Know What It's Like to be Alone" and "I Don't Want to Listen" reveal the crooning, bruised romantic, the harsh morning light of a strange hotel room, a Raymond Chandler novel on the bedside table. "Beyond the Moonlight" is part sea shanty longing and part campfire revival. Then, just as easily, the instrumentals take center stage. "Blackout!" updates Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme with a dynamic tension and sly cool, and Dex and Sara attack the big waves off Maui with a chaotic rush on "Blue Surf" - his guitar guiding you into the sweet spot of the pipeline and her drums pounding you into the sand. Hey Tarantino, wake up!

Digging into the skeleton-filled rock 'n' roll closet, Dex Romweber Duo comes up with some obscure and wonderful gems. The early Who track "So Sad About Us," featuring Mary Huff (SCOTS) on vocals, hits an uncharacteristically sunny power pop vibe. The hopeful "We'll Be Together Again" written by Eddie Cochran's girlfriend Sharon Sheeley about his death in a car accident (that she and Gene Vincent survived). The song was never released formally but recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the early '60s. Finishing up the album is the music of Harry Lubin, who did theme music for shows like The Outer Limits and One Step Beyond. "Weird (Aurora Borealis)" is the music from the latter when ghosts, UFO's, or odd paranormal experiences begin to rear their strange heads, complete with tribal drums and Melissa Swingle (Trailer Bride, The Moaners) on the saw.

Flat Duo Jets - so often emulated, so rarely duplicated - released the first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. They starred, alongside R.E.M. and The B-52s, in the 1987 cult classic film Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Their first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps and they made a stunning impression on Late Night with David Letterman. Dex Romweber Duo's first record Ruins of Berlin featured guest appearances by Neko Case, Cat Power, and Exene Cervenka. Dex was name-checked by Jack White in the guitar superstar documentary It Might Get Loud, and the Duo recorded a single and live album with White for his label Third Man Records in 2009. Subsequently, the Duo has shared the stage with dozens of rock icons including Wanda Jackson, Cat Power, Neko Case, and The White Stripes. In 2012, the documentary about Dex's sometimes harrowing career Two Headed Cow was released.
