    Live At The Avant Garde

Before Magic Sam scored with 1967's West Side Soul (DMK 615) his recorded legacy included a handful of sides for Cobra in the late '50s, Chief in the early '60s and a few miscellaneous 45s in the mid-'60s. But just when it looked like things were going to really take off for Sam he passed away on December 1, 1969 at the age of 32. Delmark issued 1968's Black Magic (DMK 620) and there have been several posthumous releases of live recordings including the classic Live (DMK 645). This album comes from a June 22, 1968 live concert recorded at the Avant Garde in Milwaukee. It features Magic Sam, vocals, guitar; Big Mojo Elem, bass and Bob Richey, drums. Over 65 minutes.

Temporarily sidestepping her familiar 'French Pop' sound in favor of a country-blues flavored feel, Hardy pens most of the laid-back mellow rock tracks herself. The Avant-Garde (Mono Remaster)

    Mono Remaster

This album is rightfully co-credited to Don Cherry (trumpet), who ably trades blows with John Coltrane (tenor/soprano sax) throughout. The Avant-Garde also boasts the debut studio recording of Coltrane playing soprano sax -- on The Blessing -- in addition to his continuing advancements on tenor.

Although these tracks were recorded during the summer of 1960, they remained shelved for nearly six years.

Joining Coltrane and Cherry are essentially the rest of the members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, Ed Blackwell (drums) and Charlie Haden (bass) on Cherryco and The Blessing, as well as Percy Heath (bass) on the remaining three selections. This is fitting, as over half of the album consists of early Coleman compositions. Coltrane's integration into this band works with some extraordinarily fresh results. Neither Cherry nor Coltrane makes any radical departures on this album; however, it's the ability of each to complement the other both in terms of modal style and -- perhaps more importantly -- texture that lends heavily to the success of these sides. Cherry's brisk and somewhat nasal intonations on The Blessing mimic those of Miles Davis, albeit with shorter flourishes and heavily improvised lines. When combined with Coltrane's well-placed -- if not somewhat reserved -- solos, the mutual value of both is dramatically increased. Blackwell -- the only other musician besides Cherry and Coltrane to be featured on every track -- provides some non-conventional percussive accompaniment. His contributions to The Blessing and workout on the aptly titled Focus on Sanity are primal.

    Clear Vinyl

Clear vinyl (in clear plastic sleeve with black lettering) - limited to 500 copies. Avant-garde composer and sound installation artist Takehisa Kosugi (musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) has led the Japanese avant-garde music scene since the early 1960s. In 1969 he formed the Taj Mahal Travellers, a musical collective that travelled the world in a VW minibus creating Fluxus-influenced improvised multimedia sound events. This double album (divided into two LPs), recorded live at the Nippon Columbia Studio in Tokyo in 1974, was the groups final effort before disbanding. Here Kosugi and the Travellers blend Eastern and Western instrumentation, vocal chants and electronics to create free-form psych-laden drones. This historic album is an essential and influential piece of Japanese avant rock

    The Family That Plays Together

Spirit wrote the book on the sound they created: a potent synthesis of high-voltage rock, folk, jazz, blues and avant garde electronica. The groundbreaking Los Angeles quintet hit their stride with The Family That Plays Together, whose mega-hit I Got A Line On You practically defined underground FM radio in 1968. Spirits 1969 album Clear found them polishing their art to a fine sheen with dusky jewels like Dark Eyed Woman and So Little Time To Fly. Sundazed is knocked-out to present perfect recreations (including Familys striking gatefold sleeve) of both LPs on pristine 180-gram vinyl, from the absolute master tapes.

Coquelicot Asleep In The Poppies: A Variety Of Whimsical Verse

Of Montreal's fourth album, was released in 2001 and quickly went out of print due to its extravagant and expensive packaging. Polyvinyl is now bringing it back in all its glory, with all 22 tracks and the entire booklet of original paintings. It's the band's most ambitious album with songs of wonderful madness featuring strange musical interludes, a detective story, gentle love songs, avant pop songs, and ending with an 18-minute piano opus.

The songs on Coquelicot, though crammed full of saccharine pop hooks, display a level of complex structuring and arrangement that could put most pop records to shame. - Pitchfork

Limited To 600 Copies On Purple Colored Vinyl

Coroner's fourth album, MENTAL VORTEX was originally released
in 1991 and is considered by many as their magnum opus.
As the thrash metal phenomena was cooling down, the band
strived to take their metallic dynamics in a more progressive and
complex direction. The tempo slowed down across the majority
of the album but in came a strong sense of melody combined
with their signature time changes and individuality. This is easily
one of the best albums the genre has to offer.

Formed in Zurich, Switzerland in 1983, CORONER were originally roadies for fellow Swiss avant garde thrashers, Celtic Frost.
In fact, Frost frontman Tom G Warrior sang vocals on the bands demo, Death Cult. Signing to Germany's Noise Records
in 1987 the band produced five albums for the label over the next nine years - R.I.P., Punishment For Decadence, No More
Colour, Mental Vortex and Grin. Starting out from the 80's thrash scene the band's sound soon progressed to encompass
elements of classical, avant-garde, prog, jazz and industrial and their increasingly complex style pf progressive rock-infused
thrash garnered them the nickname, "the Rush of thrash metal."

Limited To 500 Copies On 2x Green Colored Vinyl

Coroner's fifth and final album for Noise Records was GRIN and
was originally released in 1993. This album saw the band move
even further forward with sonic diversity and encapsulated a
more groove lead sound with industrial elements, which were
popular during the mid-nineties. It's songs were longer, more
complex and the most experimental the band have ever written.
GRIN is a technical marvel and in '96 was risky and very ahead
of its time which has led to it being hailed, posthumously as an
    innovative classic of its genre.

    The United States of America

Packaged for a limited time in a repro of the original manila envelope!

The United States of America, led by respected modern classical avant garde musician Joseph Byrd, cut a wide swath through the 1968 world of rock, just then comfortably settling in to its backwoods dreams of country-rock to find the debut U.S.A. album howling like an infant terrible on its front doorstep. At the center of the U.S.A.'s fiercely experimental universe were the icy-cool vocals of the beautiful Dorothy Moskowitz, keeping this tumultuous sound from spinning out-of-control in every direction. Almost predictably, the U.S.A. disbanded before it could record a second album, but its brilliant, self-titled effort was certainly one for the ages.

By 1969, Spirit guitarist Randy California, his stepfather Ed Cassidy on drums, vocalist Jay Ferguson, keyboard man John Locke and bassist Mark Andes had become one of the hottest young bands in Los Angeles and was one of the first to prove that albums were becoming more important to an act's success than singles.

All the elements that made Spirit a unique listening experience high-voltage rock, jazz, moody soundtrack-like instrumentals and avant garde electronica are present in spades in 1969's album Clear, whose FM radio smashes, Dark Eyed Woman and I'm Truckin, vaulted the Topanga Canyon quintet to the forefront of L.A.'s second wave of essential rock bands. Teaspoon To The Ocean

Born in Louisville, raised in Georgia, educated in Michigan and bouncing between California and New York ever since, he has spent the last decade exploring a variety of approaches to psychedelic collage. In his audio
recordings, songs, videos, sculptures, digital paintings, chalk murals & written work he has attempted to harness the humour and ambiguous poignancy specific to the experience of dreaming.

The latest addition to Schuster-Craig's unique and under-exposed body of work comes in the form of Teaspoon To The Ocean, his debut album for Weird World. The eleven acid-country pop songs of Teaspoon To The
Ocean combine the cut-up lyrical style of avant garde literary great Gertrude Stein with influences ranging from Lindsay Buckingham to Meat Puppets by way of Roy Orbison, Gary Numan and Indonesian Campursari
    and Vietnamese slide guitar playing.

    Devil's Halo

Devils Halo, Meshell Ndegeocello's 8th album, harkens back to the way records used to be made with live band energy and phenomenal musicianship. Influenced by a breadth of sounds, from The Human League to Wu Tang to Yes, Devils Halo displays Meshells own diversity of formidable gifts. Always the uncompromising artist and bass player, this record brings a broad range of musical and lyrical voices and selves: the searcher, the skeptic, the dissenter, and the lover. True to form, Meshell offers compositions with raging climaxes alongside moments of terrifying tenderness and honesty. Genre-defiant as ever, Devils Halo asks for the real fans of exploration to please stand up.

Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up with the politics of explaining herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans. For the sake of setting the record straight, a few brass tacks remain: Meshell was born in Germany, raised in DC, signed at 23, and has been nominated for 10 Grammy awards.

    Bad As Me

Bad As Me is Tom Waits first studio album of all new music in seven years. This pivotal work refines the music that has come before and signals a new direction. Waits, in possibly the finest voice of his career, worked with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer Kathleen Brennan.

From the opening horn-fueled chug of Chicago, to the closing barroom chorale of New Years Eve, Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits songwriting, from beautiful ballads like Last Leaf, to the avant cinematic soundscape of Hell Broke Luce, a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like Talking at the Same Time, Waits shows off a supple falsetto, while on blues burners like Raised Right Men and the gospel tinged Satisfied he spits, stutters and howls.

Like a good boxer, these songs are lean and mean, with strong hooks and tight running times. A pervasive sense of players delighting in each others musical company brings a feeling of loose joy even to the albums saddest songs.
