    Painted from Memory

An Unforgettable Exhibition of Stellar Melodies, Gorgeous Arrangements, and Fully Bared Emotion: Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Brilliant Painted from Memory a Collaboration for the Ages

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Strictly Limited to 3,000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP of Painted from Memory Features Incredible Detail, Lushness, Textures, and Scope

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Painted from Memory endures as an extraordinary exhibition of prime music making, gorgeous arranging, and naked emotion. Having transpired after the pair teamed up on God Give Me Strength for a film soundtrack (and the closing track here), the album has since gone on to become one of the most respected - and admired - projects of each artist's considerable careers. Its expert employment of melody and harmony imparts a timelessness that stretches back to pop's golden age and icons such as Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra. Further boosted by meticulous production, it has long called out for audiophile treatment. Mobile Fidelity's analog reissue brings it all full circle.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed on dead-quiet 180g vinyl at RTI, and strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl LP of Painted from Memory transforms the 1998 set into an essential component of any library. Always an effort that rewarded solitary listening, it now breathes with ravishing openness, reveals crystalline detail, unfolds against jet-back backgrounds, mesmerizes with a rainbow of textures, and constantly engages with its impossible smoothness. For the first time, the scope of the intricacies, nuances, and phrasings embedded in Bacharach's meticulous compositions can be experienced in full. The orbit of the bridges, refrains, and codas beguiles the senses. Ditto the poetic reach of Costello's singing and lyrics.

Indeed, the level of care and concern invested into every passage of Painted from Memory is immediately gleaned by the ravishing sonics afforded on this collectable edition - amazingly, the first time this title has been available on LP. Reference-grade presence, tonality, and balance help capture the sweep of the strings, colorful blush of the horn accents, and weight of the piano. Steve Nieve's keyboards, Greg Cohen's bass, Dean Parks' guitar, and Jim Keltner's drums seemingly appear right in the room. Rather than smear together or jockey for position, each instrument enjoys its own place and simultaneously sounds part of the rich, lush, complex albeit completely interwoven tapestry. Graceful, elegant, and classicist-minded, Painted from Memory is a genuine masterpiece - and a true collaboration.

No wonder Costello dedicated a large portion of a chapter from his Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink memoir to his time with Bacharach. Among his insights, Costello explains how crafting the album forced him to be a better writer and singer - and a better listener, stating: Writing those first songs with Burt Bacharach required me to listen to what the music was really saying to me. Sometimes it was speaking so quietly that I needed to listen very intently. I needed time for the meaning and feeling that I sensed in the music to be confirmed by my own words. The strange thing was that the title of a song often came to me in an instant, but then would begin the more excruciating task of negotiating Burt's spacious melodies and rhythmic subtleties.

The very aspects Costello discusses come to the forefront on remarkable torch pieces such as the intensely dramatic This House Is Empty Now, melancholic Thief, and Grammy-winning I Still Have That Other Girl. In addition to Bacharach's suave, sophisticated, strikingly exquisite orchestrations, Costello's vocals carry the day. Straddling two octaves and sighing with pain, bittersweet romance, and wistful reflection, his baritone stretching to convey highs and lows with crooner-like poise, breadth, and fastidiousness. Thrilling, distinctive, and memorable, the performances are just like the entirety of Painted from Memory itself - unforgettably great.

This Girl's In Love (A Bacharach & David Songbook)

The album features some of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's most memorable co-compositions and sees Rumer bring her extensive experience and singular talent to bear on her most enticing undertaking to date. Recorded at the renowned Capitol Studios with accomplished arranger, composer and orchestrator, Rob Shirakbari - THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE includes an appearance by Bacharach himself on piano. To mark the news, Rumer has shared a first track (They Long To Be) Close To You, with live plans to be announced shortly.

What's most fitting to THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE is the personal relationship between Rumer and Shirakbari. The pair married in 2015 in Shirakbari's native Arkansas after first meeting at a Dionne Warwick gala at the Royal Albert Hall where Rumer was to sing a duet of Bacharach & David's Hasbrook Heights. With Shirakbari having worked for 25 years with Bacharach and 30 years with Dionne Warwick-serving as musical director to them both-this could even be deemed a Bacharach romance. It was a natural project for the newly married couple to create together, with both having great respect and reverence for the song catalogue.

Some of the songs on THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE are as familiar as any from the 20th century. Which is why Rumer and Shirakbari decided, in many cases, to remake/remodel them, affording these standards a melancholia that gets right to the emotive core of Bacharach's melodies and David's lyrics. Where before (They Long to Be) Close to You might have been slightly wistful, here there is a sense that the lyric's longing is unlikely to be consummated. The Look of Love is more sepulchral, with just a taste of the bossa nova tendencies of the '60s versions. You'll Never Get To Heaven has all the sophistication of Dionne Warwick's take, but with a new attention to the cautionary narrative of the lyrics. And Rumer has dug deeper into the catalogue to find the hidden treasure Balance of Nature and made it her own.

Brooklyn soul singer Lou Johnson was a singer and pianist who actively
recorded between the years of 1962-1972. As a teen he sang in gospel
choirs and studied music at Brooklyn College.

In 1962 Johnson signed with Bigtop Records, run by the Hi ll & Range
publishing group located in the Brill Building. It was during this tenure that
Johnson befriended the iconic songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and
Hal David. They wrote his first three singles, "If I Never Get To Love You,"
"You Better Let Him Go," and "Reach Out to Me." The first two songs failed
to connect on the charts but the third reached #74 on the Billboard Hot
100 in 1963. Unfortunately Bigtop folded just as the song began to climb
the charts and Johnson's success with the song was hampered.

He then signed to Big Hill and continued his association with Bacharach/
David. In 1964, his original version of "Always Something There to Remind
Me" with backup vocals by Doris Troy, Dee Dee Warwick and Cissy Houston
reached #49 in the US charts. Lou also recorded original versions of other
Bacharach/David songs that went on to become bigger hits for artists such
as Dionne Warwick and Adam Faith.

Johnson recorded two albums for Atlantic Records, one of which, Sweet
Southern Soul, is our featured voting title here. Released on Atlantic's
subsidiary, Cotillion in 1969, it was produced by Jerry Wexler and Tom
Dowd at Muscle Shoals Studios. Featuring the Muscle Shoals band and
including songs by Curtis Mayfield, Eddie Hinton and Don Covay, it had all
the elements of a classic Atlantic soul album of the era but failed to garner
much attention. His final full length, With You in Mind, was produced by
Allen Toussaint for Stax's Volt label but it too sunk like a stone. Johnson
later moved to Los Angeles and became a nightclub entertainer. Sweet
Southern Soul is a classic crate digger record and would find a welcome
home in any soul collector's library

Recorded mostly in Gould's home studio, the album produced three singles: Ashes to Ashes, Last Cup of Sorrow and Stripsearch. Slurrup

Hayes has been making critically acclaimed pop records since 1994, when he released the single "Three-Quarters Blind Eyes" b/w "Found a Little Baby". Considered by many to be a pop classic, it helped to establish him as a songwriter. In 1998, he released More You Becomes You, a spare, stripped-down collection of his intimate tunes. In 2002, he released Fed, a lush, orchestral album. 2009's Bright Penny, an ode to pop music, was released under the name Liam Hayes and Plush.

Although he emerged from the Chicago indie-rock scene, Hayes is often compared with artists such as Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro, Burt Bacharach and Harry Nilsson. Like some of the best folk-pop or soft soul from the 1960's of 1970's there is a timeless quality to his music.

Hayes is not the kind of artist who spends all day interacting on social media. He doesn't reveal a lot in interviews. He's not trying to be cagey or eccentric or elusive, he would just rather keep the focus on his songs. And let's face it, mystique is underrated in this era of over-sharing. Described by Uncut as 'one of the most charismatic and eccentric cult pop craftsmen of the past 20 years', Hayes has a newly completed album right around the corner, to be released worldwide on Fat Possum. While comparably retro, Hayes' newly completed "Slurrup" is leaner and meaner than anything he's done all millennium.

    Inherent Vice Soundtrack

Nonesuch will release Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack to Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson's new feature film, Inherent Vice). An adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, Inherent Vice, which will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters starting on December 12, is set in the tail end of the psychedelic '60s and stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. In addition to nine compositions by Jonny Greenwood, the soundtrack features Spooks, an unreleased Radiohead tune performed by members of Supergrass, as well as other recordings from the movie's era (complete track list follows). Additional performers include The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Neil Young, Can, and The Marketts, among others.

This is the third Anderson film that Greenwood has scored. Their previous collaborations include the critically praised soundtrack for 2007's Academy Award-winning There Will Be Blood and 2012's The Master, both released by Nonesuch. Rolling Stone said of The Master that its visual poetry is matched by Jonny Greenwood's haunting, hypnotic score. The New Yorker described the music as rich and inventive. The Times of London exclaimed: Jonny Greenwood's score is superb. Of the There Will Be Blood score, the Boston Globe noted that the squealing, cicada-like strings of...Popcorn Superhet Receiver masterfully evoke the film's apocalyptic vision of the West.

    For One To Love

CÉcile McLorin Salvant, the wildly talented 25-year-old singer, songwriter, visual artist and illustrator, became a breakout star with 2013's 'WomanChild.' Her follow-up, 'For One To Love,' is a courageous statement of contrast: love and longing, delight and desire.

CÉcile composed five original songs for 'For One To Love.' Each of these tunes explore the album's underlying themes and display CÉcile's strong personality, sharp intellect, coy humor, unfettered romanticism, and penetrating honesty. The thematic elements continue to grow with a smoldering take on Burt Bacharach's bygone Wives and Lovers and Growlin' Dan by Blanche Calloway, the first woman to lead an all-male orchestra. What's The Matter Now, originally popularized by Bessie Smith, is a juxtaposition of feel versus subject matter: a plea for fair treatment enclosed in a playful blues. Le Mal De Vivre, written by French singer Barbara in 1966, is a stark ballad performed by CÉ cile in French.

'For One To Love' is a riotous showcase for this riveting voice: quivering highs and soul-shaking lows, all delivered with grace and style. Salvant has reunited with decorated young pianist Aaron Diehl, joined by his trio of Paul Sikivie on bass and Lawrence Leathers on drums. Together this ensemble swings and swirls, nimbly hanging on CÉcile's every cry, snarl and coo. A gifted illustrator, CÉcile accents the albums poignant music with original artwork.

CÉcile was born in Miami, Fl and studied French law, baroque and jazz vocal performance in Aix-En-Provence before winning the 2010 Thelonious Monk competition. 'WomanChild' was praised by the NY Times, NPR, won Downbeat's Album of the Year and earned CÉcile her first Grammy nomination. She now lives in Harlem. An extensive international tour is planned through 2015 including performances at the Newport Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, La Villette (Paris) the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival.

    Aretha's Gold

The Aretha Franklin/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Begins!

Celebrate 4 Decades Of The Queen Of Soul's Greatest Hits!

    First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl - #1 R&B Album In 1969!

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso From The Original Atlantic Records Tapes

Aretha Franklin will be forever known as The Queen Of Soul and one of the original classic soul pioneers like Ray
Charles, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett who had a knack of mastering funk grooves drenched in gospel, soul, rock
    and pop.

Aretha Franklin created some of the greatest sides ever for Atlantic, where she spent almost two decades creating
some of the most masterful and beautiful soul music ever waxed.

In 1969, Aretha was honored with her first greatest hits collection by our good friends at Atlantic Records simply
titled Aretha's Gold. This stunning array of her biggest #1's and other smash hit singles, most of them featuring Duane
Allman, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Roger Hawkins, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson, dominated the top
of the soul and pop charts for over a year. Her songs and soulful delivery on these hits truly illustrate how important her
force was then and still is today, over four decades since!

Aretha was important in bridging all types of rhythm and blues music to a much wider audience, churning out not
only soul smashes but pop masterpieces. Most of her biggest hits have been covered by many artists over the years as
well. Jam packed with the original Atlantic recordings of solid senders like her classics Chain of Fools, See Saw, Baby, I
Love You and of course Respect, Aretha's Gold is virtually an encyclopedia of SOUL!

Even more soul and pop classics abound as you'll hear her scream and shout with the best of the blues with Dr.
Feelgood, one of her most beautiful ballads with (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, and her soulful touch on Burt
Bacharach's classic I Say a Little Prayer. This #1 charting 1969 LP hasn't been available on vinyl for many decades...
    that is until now!

Friday Music is very proud to announce for the first time ever the stunning 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of
Aretha's Gold. Mastered from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol
Mastering in Hollywood, these classic tracks truly reach sonic heights in the audiophile vinyl domain. We have also
included the original artwork elements by Haig Adishian, the classic photo of Aretha Franklin by James J. Kreigsman, as
well as the original back cover studio session photo collage not seen in LP cover form in years!

The soul lives on here at the Friday Music label, and as with our recent original pioneering soul albums from Ray
Charles, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and others, we feel this stunning Aretha Franklin 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl will
be a much anticipated and welcomed release to all the soul, funk and rock audiophile vinyl fans. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

The Great American Songbook (Pure Pleasure)

This is a gem of an album and one of my favorites by McRae. It was recorded live for Atlantic Records at Donte's Club in Los Angeles on November 6, 1971, and released the following year.

What I love is not only the choice of songs but the sound quality and the performance itself. The set not only contains established standards by Ellington, Cole Porter and the other greats, but some new (at the time) material. Including Burt Bacharach's They Long To Be Close To You in the set was a wise decision in my opinion. It deserves to be a standard. Of course, there is the obligatory Billie Holiday song that McRae would include in all of her performances. On this album it's I Cried For You, which was one of Billie's first recordings in 1936.

The sound quality is superb. The engineer managed to capture not only the energy from the live performance, but the richness of the ensemble backing McRae. Indeed, the musicians backing her are perfect for the material: Jimmy Rowles on piano (who wrote the Ballad of Thelonious Monk), Joe Pass on guitar, Chuck Domanico on bass and Chuck Flores on drums.

If you love hearing some of the best songs from the Great American Songbook performed by a master this album will delight you. There is a cohesiveness to the album that earns kudos from the production team as well as the performers. Interestingly McRae and her ensemble performed 32 songs the night that this was recorded. One can only speculate as to why a volume 2 wasn't released. Regardless, this is - in my opinion - some of McRae's best live material. - Mike Tarrani

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Paradise & Lunch

Desert Island-Worthy Paradise and Lunch Will Renew Your Faith in Music: Diverse 1974 Ry Cooder Set Comes on Like a Secret History of Song, Features Exquisite Interplay and Inspirational Harmonies

Paradise and Lunch Mastered on 180g Vinyl from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity LP Graced With Organic Sound

Ry Cooder's exceptional Paradise and Lunch takes a popular precept - music as the common denominator across all languages and styles - to extremes few artists have envisioned let alone fulfilled. Considered by many diehards to be the California native's finest hour, the 1974 set unfurls with rarified levels of joyousness, ingenuity, and sophistication. A prime contender for any Desert Island list and an album that repeatedly restores your faith in the inimitable effects experienced upon listening to special performances, Paradise and Lunch is an eternal musicians' musician record - an adventurous, ambitious, soulful leap down roads well-traveled and paths less known.

Such eclecticism, virtuosity, and ebullience resonate with unmatched verve on Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP reissue. Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, this vinyl LP boasts dead-quiet surfaces, superb transient response, front-to-back soundstaging, and an organic immediacy that heightens the enjoyment, character, and craft of the arrangements. Cooder's inspired guitar playing sounds tremendously lifelike, replete with proper scale, full-bodied tones, and a sense of decay that presents the trail ends of each note. Horns pop with three-dimensional detail and brassy colors. Akin to the contributions of all the all-star participants, Jim Keltner's percussion benefits from added stability and depth. Paradise and Lunch has never been more transparent.

On the surface a collection of seemingly disparate jazz, blues, spiritual, and roots songs, the diversified album comes across as a secret history of music. It remains a paragon of seamless convergence in which sonic DNA differences reveal shared traits and quilt a fabric united by feeling, reinvention, and elation. Beginning with a recast rendition of a traditional folk number, Tamp 'Em Up Solid, believed to be a close descendant of the group-vocal tune sung by field hands when they stacked bales of cotton, and ending with a stirring stripped-down cover of Arthur Blake's Ditty Wah Ditty - a show-stealing duet sent up with just an acoustic guitar and jazz icon Earl Fatha Hines' spritely walking-the-line piano riffs - Paradise and Lunch charms with exquisite interplay, inspirational harmonies, and innate flair.

At no point do the experimentations sound forced, artificial, or retro. Cooder transforms what initially appear to be obscurities into coherent, approachable songs that could have been recorded yesterday - or decades ago. In his world, a marvelous reggae-spiced and R&B-driven rendition of Bobby Womack's It's All Over Now coexists with a sanctified, harmony-based march through the gospel hymn Jesus on the Mainline anchored by restrained Dixieland accents and tolling bells. Another standard, albeit more modern, Burt Bacharach's Mexican Divorce strolls across dusty plains via gently clopping beats, shimmering Spanish motifs, and sympathetic support vocals.

Cooder also turns up the electricity a smidge for his idea of Bobby Miller's If Walls Could Talk, a melodic snapshot of doo-wop shot through with reverb-drenched grooves. He rains funky vibes, chicken-scratch slide guitar, and churchgoing lessons down on a top-to-bottom remake of Blind Willie McTell's Married Man's a Fool, the revision evocative of the imagination, proficiency, and blending that help make Paradise and Lunch an absolute must-own album - and now, an audiophile choice for those wished-for Desert Island trips.

    From Elvis In Memphis

Ranked 190/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Elvis Presley/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues!

Mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the Original RCA Records Tapes/Manufactured at RTI

    Elvis' Groundbreaking Comeback Album!

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early '50s, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known!

The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single "Heartbreak Hotel" forever etched 'The King Of Rock And Roll' trademark to his name. For the remainder of the 1950's into the mid-60's, Elvis Presley would release several dozen more hit albums and smash singles, spend time in the Army, star in a plethora of top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all time.

As the turbulent '60s roared on, styles of music would change and rock and roll was becoming more infused with psychedelic and harder rock elements. Elvis wasn't a follower by any means, so he got back to his roots and began another chapter of his career which many have called The Elvis "Comeback" era. First witnessed on his impeccable Elvis television program on NBC-TV in 1968, a new and exciting rock superstar was truly back to reclaim his crown.

Thanks to his chart topping smash recording of "In The Ghetto," this southern fried deep soul sounding Elvis Presley was just what the fans were screaming for and soon enough an entire album was built around this great new sound entitled From Elvis In Memphis. The 1969 album also was a blockbuster as it topped the upper rungs of the pop and country charts, making this one of his biggest albums of his career as well as one of his most revered. From Elvis In Memphis truly proved once again that his career was unlike any other in music history.

Produced by Chips Moman, the From Elvis In Memphis album takes off with the two soul stirring rockers "Wearin' That Loved On Look" and the Jerry Butler Philly groove of "Only The Strong Survive." More Elvis favorites follow with the country ballad "Long Black Limousine" and the rockin' interpretation of Hank Snow's classic "I'm Movin' On." The album also features a nice helping of solid interpretations of Elvis' own favorites like Burt Bacharach's classic "Any Day Now," the timeless "Gentle On My Mind" by John Hartford, and of course the heartfelt Mac Davis composition "In The Ghetto." In total, the album showcases twelve important Elvis Presley recordings which have truly gone onto become definitive classics by any measure of popular music.

In honor of the Man, the Music, the Legend, the King Of Rock And Roll, Friday Music is very proud and honored to announce the limited edition 180g audiophile vinyl release of the RCA Victor classic From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley. As a third installment in their exciting Elvis Presley 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series, Friday presents this masterwork in all its high fidelity glory. Bright Moments (Pure Pleasure)

Rahsaan Roland Kirk's live club gigs were usually engaging, freewheeling affairs, full of good humor and a fantastically wide range of music. The double album Bright Moments is a near-definitive document of the Kirk live experience, and his greatest album of the '70s. The extroverted Kirk was in his element in front of an audience, always chatting, explaining his concepts, and recounting bits of jazz history. Even if some of his long, jive-talking intros can sound a little dated today, it's clear in the outcome of the music that Kirk fed voraciously off the energy of the room.

Most of the tracks are long (seven minutes or more), demonstrating Kirk's wealth of soloing ideas in a variety of styles (and, naturally, on a variety of instruments). Pedal Up is a jaw-dropping demonstration of Kirk's never-duplicated three-horns-at-once technique, including plenty of unaccompanied passages that simply sound impossible. There's more quintessential Kirk weirdness on Fly Town Nose Blues, which heavily features an instrument called the nose flute, and the title track has a healthy dose of Kirk singing through his (traditional) flute.

His repertoire is typically eclectic: Ellington's Prelude to a Kiss; a groovy Bacharach pop tune in You'll Never Get To Heaven; a lovely version of Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz; and a stomping, exultant New Orleans-style original, Dem Red Beans and Rice. Perhaps the best, however, is an impassioned rendition of the ballad standard If I Loved You, where Kirk's viscerally raw, honking tone hints in a roundabout way at the avant-garde without ever losing its melodic foundation. Bright Moments empties all the major items out of Kirk's bag of tricks, providing a neat microcosm of his talents and displaying a consummate and knowledgeable showman. In short, it's nothing less than a 'tour de force'.

    Musicians:

    • Ron Burton (piano)

    • Henry Pearson (bass)

    • Todd Barkan (synthesizer)

    • Joe Habao (percussion)

If You Could Read My Mind

    Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl

Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot emerged from the 1960s folk world, and had as much in common with Ian & Sylvia, Eric Andersen, and Bob Dylan as he did with any '70s AM wonder. Though the title track of IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND was indeed his first massive pop hit, the album proves that Lightfoot was a serious, substantive song craftsman. Minstrel of the Dawn is a Mr. Tambourine Man-like affair that closes on a surprisingly sarcastic note. Sit Down Young Stranger and Cobwebs & Dust are the folkiest cuts, and each bears an incisive, poetic lyricism. The bluesy Baby It's Alright and a cover of Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee showcase Lightfoot's rootsier tendencies, while Saturday Clothes stands out by virtue of it's Bacharach-like melody and dinner-jacket chord progression. While he wasn't as edgy as fellow Canuck Leonard Cohen, Lightfoot was clearly a formidable song-poet.

    I Don't Want To Cry

    Pressed at R.T.I.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Chuck Jackson witnessed first-hand the rise of the city's vibrant doo wop scene. Joining local heroes the Del Vikings, his smooth, commanding voice took the lead on their 1957 single "Willette." Going solo in 1959, Jackson was spotted by producer/Wand Records A&R man Luther Dixon while opening for Jackie Wilson at the Apollo Theater. With Dixon, Jackson co-wrote his first hit, "I Don't Want to Cry." The track featured a lavish band arrangement, a style Dixon had perfected during his sessions with the Shirelles. Together, Jackson and Dixon carefully crafted I Don't Want to Cry! (1961), Jackson's debut LP. A concept album dedicated to songs about crying, it finds Jackson covering mentor Wilson ("Lonely Teardrops") as well as an early Burt Bacharach-Hal David composition ("I Wake Up Crying"). Audibly in command, Jackson's vocals blend seamlessly with Dixon's arrangements, resulting in an astonishingly accomplished album. Working from the original analog reels, Sundazed has mastered this landmark LP in the rare true stereo mix. Pressed at R.T.I. on lush 180 gram vinyl, every string swell, every horn phrase and, most importantly, every vocal performance comes through in "you are there" clarity. No collection is complete without this Brill Building classic!

Marc's distinctive vocals have rarely sounded richer and warmer. - Record Collector

Almond's voice--although it no longer veers out of tune like it used to so endearingly in the 80s--is still enthralling. - The Guardian

'Shadows And Reflections' is the new album by Marc Almond released by BMG. It features sumptuous arrangements of iconic torch songs and60's orchestral pop for which he is beloved, as well as two new original compositions. The album features songs written or recorded by artists such as Burt Bacharach, The Action, The Yardbirds, Bobby Darin, Julie Driscoll, Billy Fury and the Young Rascals. The album thematically begins and ends in an apartment. It's about this guy that's living in a luxury expansive glass apartment overlooking the city, filled with sculptures and beautiful things, an empty soulless shell, surrounded by absurd wealth. He is sitting alone and I imagine listening to this music, possibly the songs that make up this album. He's rich in the bank but the poorest person you know.

2017 cements the 60th Birthday year for the singer who the Observer noted, has never stood still and comes after the great success of the Top 10 album 'Hits And Pieces', which was followed by a sold-out Spring tour including a triumphant show at London's Roundhouse.

    Baby It's You

When Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie "Micki" Harris and Beverly Lee got together to sing for a high school talent show in 1957, they had no intentions of becoming professional musicians. However, fate stepped in when classmate Mary Jane Greenberg told her mother, Tiara Records owner Florence Greenberg, about the group. Greenberg signed them to her label, released a single and then sold the label, along with the fledgling group, to Decca Records. Decca soon dropped them, which left Greenberg free to sign them to her new label, Scepter Records. At Scepter, The Shirelles hit their stride, working with the cream of the Brill Building songwriters. One of these songwriters, Luther Dixon, was hired by Greenberg to write for and produce the group and together they developed the group's signature sound. Under his guidance, the Shirelles enjoyed seven Top 20 hits and launched the girl group genre.

Released as a single in 1961, "Baby It's You" reached #8 on the pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts. Written by Burt Bacharach, Mack David and Luther Dixon (under the pseudonym Barney Williams), the song has become an enduring classic, covered by The Beatles, Smith and many other artists. It also served as the title track for The Shirelles' first album of 1962. Baby Its You features 12 outstanding songs, including their single "Soldier Boy" which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Sourced from the original analog session tapes, this Sundazed reissue faithfully reproduces one of the most influential albums of the early '60s (certainly, Barry Gordy would agree). After one listen, you won't want nobody, nobody but The Shirelles.
