    Clinging To A Scheme

On their 2010 third release, Clinging To A Scheme, The Radio Dept. combined the most unequalled components of their previous two albums with winning results. Heavens On Fire is a passionate and yet passively aggressive attack on the unknown in an almost cheerful song with a hip-hop beat, obstinate guitars and a driving house-piano while Never Follow Suit has got Johan Duncansons hushed voice glued to a heavy bass, backbeat piano and shimmering flutes. Clinging To A Scheme is a low-key but intense soliloquy on issues of belonging and not belonging. Reissued on 180g vinyl!

    Murmur

Ranked 197/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

R.E.M. developed a strangely subdued variation of their trademark sound for their full-length debut album, Murmur by de-emphasizing the backbeat and accentuating the ambience of the guitars. Even though it's firmly rooted in the tradition of American folk-rock, post-punk, and garage rock, Murmur sounds eerily timeless, as if it appeared out of nowhere. Part of the distinctiveness lies in the atmospheric production, which exudes a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the remarkably accomplished songwriting. R.E.M. went on to produce a few albums that may have been on par with Murmur, but they never made anything that sounded quite like it. Reissued here on audiophile quality 180g vinyl with original packaging.

Discovery is the recording project of Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles, friends who began recording together in the summer of 2005. One year later they had committed themselves to their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, but nonetheless continued to record together when they both found themselves in the same city. The project is many things: it's partly an attempt to realize Wes' concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam's concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snares drums. It's an embrace and also a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats. Elements of European electronic dance music skittering in double-time over steady R&B. If soul music is secularized, sexualized gospel, Discovery is an attempt to see if soul music can survive being plasticized, roboticized, quantized, chopped, and finally, screwed. The album features Rostam and Wes each singing half the songs and guest vocals from Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projecters).

    Ride Your Heart

On the heels of three well-received singles comes Ride Your Heart, the bombastic debut album by LA band Bleached. Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That's the goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters. Their first single Next Stop epitomizes this movement - fun, raw, adventurous and free. Tossing you out onto the dance floor, hair mussed from make-outs, cigarette still dangling from your fingertips.

As a whole, the twelve tracks on Ride Your Heart reveal the many facets of Bleached's music in a delicious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a new element, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as The Ramones and The Cars to The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorus of Dead In Your Head,, the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of Searching Through The Past and the pulsating energy and urgency of Dreaming Without You and Outta My Mind, Bleached take you on a sweeping emotional roller coaster that churns and burns. Ride Your Heart is a thrilling, beating, glorious wall of sound strong enough to withstand its own impact.

    Offramp (Awaiting Repress)

This 1982 recording by the Pat Metheny Group represented a crossroads for the guitarist, a creative expansion from his original concept in terms of acoustic and electric instrumentation, folksy roots material and modern jazz influences, American and third world sources. Having thus marked out the territory for a decade's worth of experimentation and growth, the Metheny Group cemented its standing on the cutting edge of contemporary jazz with Offramp. Lyle Mays' harmonica-like synth theme, Metheny's soaring, vocalized synth-guitar lead, some rich orchestral touches, and an easygoing blend of backbeat and chord changes made Are You Going with Me? one of Metheny's most enduring arrangements. Still, for every gentle, alluring set piece, such as the tangolike Au Lait or the rural vistas of James, there was a visceral, emotive free-for-all like the title track, where Metheny unleashed wild, wailing synth guitar elisions over a loose, abstract pulse--anticipating the energy of the guitarist's collaboration with free jazz guru Ornette Coleman some four years hence on Song X. --Chip Stern

    Field Of Reeds

With their risky third album, These New Puritans abandoned the angular dance-punk of Beat Pyramid and the gloomy electronic beats of Hidden to reinvent themselves once again for Field of Reeds, a record as indebted to classical scores and avant-garde jazz as rock. Taking a hands-off, live approach to the recording process, and allowing open space and emptiness to take precedence over beats, the music has a disturbing, dystopian feel to it, swinging from detached to nightmarish before resolving into something lovingly tranquil. Some of the best songs, like Fragment 2, V (Island Song), and Spiral (which sounds like a fever-dream version of Björk and Thom Yorke's I've Seen It All duet from the Dancer in the Dark soundtrack), thrive in this push and pull between atonal dissonance and sheer beauty. Even These New Puritans' most stark numbers, while often lacking a concrete backbeat or definitive structure, are bursting with details and ideas. Ambient textures, constructed from melancholic horns and eerie analog synthesizer tones, add a wavering undercurrent that is often hair-raising and haunting. The production is equally unconventional. After writing the material in Essex and Amsterdam, Jack Barnett fleshed out the parts with his brother George and Tom Hein before recording in London, Gloucester, and Berlin with new honey-voiced Portuguese singer Elisa Rodrigues, utilizing an unusual magnetic resonator piano and meticulously detailing the songs with field recordings, including breaking glass and the screaming of an actual hawk. This perfectionism, present in the sonics and in the complex arrangements, makes Field of Reeds the most challenging title in their catalog and also the most groundbreaking.

    Here's Little Richard

Little Richard had been making records for four years before he rolled into Cosimo Matassa's J&M Studio in New Orleans and cut the epochal Tutti Frutti in the fall of 1955, but everything else he'd done -- and much of what others had recorded -- faded into insignificance when Richard wailed A wop bop a loo mop a lomp bomp bomp and kicked off one of the first great wailers in rock history. In retrospect, Little Richard's style doesn't seem so strikingly innovative as captured in 1956's Here's Little Richard -- his boogie-woogie piano stylings weren't all that different from what Fats Domino had been laying down since 1949, and his band pumped out the New Orleans backbeat that would define the Crescent City's R&B for the next two decades, albeit with precision and plenty of groove. But what set Richard apart was his willingness to ramp up the tempos and turn the outrage meter up to ten; Tutti Frutti, Rip It Up, and Jenny Jenny still sound outrageous a half-century after they were waxed, and it's difficult but intriguing to imagine how people must have reacted to Little Richard at a time when African-American performers were expected to be polite, and the notion of a gay man venturing out of the closet simply didn't exist (Richard's songs were thoroughly heterosexual on the surface, but the nudge and wink of Tutti Frutti and Baby is faint but visible, and his bop threads, mile-high process, and eye makeup clearly categorized him as someone different). These 12 tunes may not represent the alpha and omega of Little Richard's best music, but every song is a classic and unlike many of his peers, time has refused to render this first album quaint -- Richard's grainy scream remains one of the great sounds in rock & roll history, and the thunder of his piano and the frantic wail of the band is still the glorious call of a Friday night with pay in the pocket and trouble in mind. Brilliant stuff.

With over 1,000,000 Gov't Mule albums sold to date and over 2,000,000 downloads sold through Mule.net,
Gov't Mule is one of the most successful and respected bands in the world. Once lauded by Rolling Stone for successfully bringing the classic power-trio sound of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience into the 21st century - the band has completed work on 'By A Thread'. Their first studio album in three years.

Recorded largely at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in 2009, the album's origins are apparent from the first track, "Broke Down On The Brazos," named after the nearby river, with a deep Texas stomp for the backbeat and featuring the trademark guitar-work of ZZ Top founder Billy Gibbons. Perhaps less descriptively named,
"Steppin' Lightly" is another burner, set off by the soulful vocals and mind-bending guitar work of Haynes, who proves anew why Rolling Stone named him one of the Top 25 guitarists of all time.

Other highlights include the lament "Railroad Boy," informed by both Celtic tradition and the Mississippi Delta; the expansive psych-rock of 'Monday Mourning Meltdown"; and the optimistic 'Frozen Fear," with
its lush harmony and even a hint of rocksteady skank. In recent months, Haynes has been spectacularly busy in his other dual roles as guitarist and singer for The Allman Brothers, who recently wrapped an epic stand 15 night stand at NYC's Beacon, and The Dead, where he recently drew raves from USA Today:
"Haynes has the toughest role to fill... he did so masterfully."

Gov't Mule tour dates this summer included Mountain Jam, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Rothbury Music Festival, The Weesner Amphitheatre in Minneapolis MN, Mile High Music Festival in Denver, CO, Minglewood Music Hall in Memphis, TN, Sloss Furnace in Birmingham AL, The Fillmore in Charlotte NC, Masquerade

    Learning To Crawl

What is the sound of a fledgling band dealing with multiple tragedies, coming to terms with drastic changes, digging deep into its consciousness, finding resolution in hurt, and overcoming staggering odds to record a bonafide masterwork? It's the sound of every note that graces the Pretenders' Learning to Crawl. Still recognized as one of the most emotionally gripping and musically gutsy performances ever made, the smash 1984 album hasn't aged a day. And now, it sounds better than could ever be imagined.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Learning to Crawl finally possesses the combination of whisper-in-your-ear intimacy and nerve-checking toughness that it's always demanded on Mobile Fidelity's super-quiet analog LP. Leader Chrissie Hynde's voice is made viscerally apparent, wavering between vigorous determination and solemn reflection, while drummer Martin Chamber's punchy backbeats register with requisite punch. To say nothing of how fresh the effort's hit singles (Middle of the Road, Back on the Chain Gang) and incredible deep cuts sound.

The story behind Learning to Crawl is directly connected to the powerful, moving music within. After releasing two records that swept the world by storm (Pretenders and Pretenders II, the latter available on hybrid SACD from Mobile Fidelity), the group's fortunes reversed after guitarist James Honeyman-Scott was found dead of a drug overdose in 1982. Shortly thereafter, founding member Pete Fardon, fired just two days before his partner's death, also succumbed to an overdose, leaving the band's state in tatters. Would there still be a Pretenders?

Hynde answers this question with a resounding yes on Learning to Crawl, which still contains signs of the band's early, street-wise rawness but also adds new wrinkles, with more streamlined melodies, sensitive ballads, and reflective tones. Back on the Chain Gang, the Pretenders' most commercially successful hit, functioned as a bittersweet tribute to her ex-mates while the Christmas-themed 2000 Miles holds rank as one of the most effecting, penetrating love songs of Hynde's career. Throughout the record, the Pretenders are again one.

New guitarist Robbie McIntosh supplies simpler, bluesier, basic guitar lines and the foursome know how to all-out rock, with the furious Middle of the Road and socially conscious My City Was Gone testifying to a stinging, thrilling sensibility that can exist only because of the devastation that the band survived. Call it the rise of the phoenix or triumph of the human will, but any way you see it, Learning to Crawl occupies a rare territory--akin to the space referred to on the superb cover of Thin Line Between Love and Hate--that registers in the pits of the human soul.

Whether you've grown up with this album, heard it in college, or are just learning about it now, Mobile Fidelity's expertly mastered 180g LP version is the only analog edition worth owning. Hear Hynde and Co.'s cathartic, transcendent effort in all its full splendor, and, like the Pretenders, refuse to settle for less.

88 92, the new album from Houston-based quintet Wild
Moccasins, blends the co-ed fronted band's indie rock
styling with a modern take on new wave and disco.
Bringing to mind bands like Blondie and Talking Heads,
88 92 finds the troupe growing within their sound and
polishing their chops with a furious backbeat. "We build
a skeleton then give it the blood to make it come alive,"
says Cody Swann, the band's guitarist, singer and
songwriter, about creating music that pulsates with
finely constructed beats, that interweave and interact

180 Gram Remastered Vinyl With Bonus Tracks

    First Time On Vinyl!

With Smile, the Jayhawks drop yet another sizable chunk of their alt-country sound by the roadside, adding in its place healthy doses of power pop and
modern electronic music. Almost half of Smile's songs feature looped percussion, overdubbed drum tracks, or flat-out, funky backbeats. Despite the
modern touches, though, the fact remains that Smile retains just enough of a distinctly Americana feeling. On the warm and twangy Better Days, one of
Louris' best songs, he sings with genuine regret and heartache the way he treated a long ago lover, and on Break in the Clouds he celebrates the
comforts of domestic contentment, complete with pedal steel and soaring harmonies that recall the band's landmark work Hollywood Town Hall from
1992. What never changes on the Jayhawks' albums, it seems, are the blissful melodies and well-constructed tunes. This remastered edition includes

Music For Listening To Music To

    180-Gram White Vinyl

Produced By Ryan Adams At His Pax-Am Studios

"Lovely melody counterbalanced by rough guitars and
    lightning-quick solos." - SPIN

After the punky heft and wildness of 2014's Hour of the Dawn,
an LP that thrashed against expectation, La Sera returns with
a set of songs that double down on the power of wry lyrics,
glorious guitar, driving backbeat, and the occasional pump
    organ groove.

Ryan Adams joins to produce the fruit of their union, La Sera's
first live-recorded analog album, featuring 10 tunes about
good love, bad love, dead men, and confused kids.

As a testament to the chemistry that happened in that
space, Music For Listening to Music To spawned another
fruitful relationship: Adams and Wisenbaker hit it off and
decided to start their own band. Instead they wound up
recording a bunch of Taylor Swift covers, which became
    the 1989 album.

    Purple Rain (Picture Disc)

Ranked 72/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    Vinyl Picture Disc Edition

Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and that's exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and funk on nine superbly crafted songs.

Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution helps pull the music into even sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. When Doves Cry is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece, Let's Go Crazy is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat. And the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with a brilliant guitar outro. All in all, Purple Rain is a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever created.

Restoration And Mastering By Grammy-Winner, Michael Graves

Liner Notes By John Einarson, Author Of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds' Gene Clark (Backbeat Books)

    Features Previously Unseen Photos.

Gene Clark's musical legacy is most certainly assured as a singer, songwriter
and member of some exclusive company as an inductee to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a founder of The
Byrds, and collaborator in groups such as Dillard & Clark, Gene Clark and the Gosdin Brothers, McGuinn
Clark & Hillman and later as the duet partner of Carla Olson (The Textones).

His songs have been covered by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Iain Matthews, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, The
Rose Garden, and Chris & Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes among many others. As well documented as Clark's career
has been, there have been remarkable discoveries over the years (see Omnivore's Here Tonight: The White Light Demos for example),
but now the Holy Grail of Clark's post-Byrds career is finally about to see the light of day:

"For longtime Gene Clark fans and aficionados, the tracks on this remarkable archival CD are the stuff of legend. Since word
first spread in the 1980s about the discovery of these 1967 recordings on a rare acetate in Liberty Records' vaults, fans have
come to regard Gene Clark Sings For You as nothing less than the Holy Grail of the singer/songwriter's extraordinary body of
work. Shrouded in mystery and the subject of much speculation and conjecture, few have ever had the opportunity to hear these
forgotten gems from one of Gene Clark's most prolifically creative periods. Until now."

    -John Einarson

Author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds' Gene Clark (Backbeat Books)

In addition to the 8 tracks from the Gene Clark Sings For You acetate, recorded in 1967 after he famously left The Byrds, there are an
additional 5 previously unknown tracks from a further 1967 acetate given to the band, The Rose Garden, for recording consideration.
This new compilation also includes a previously unissued demo rescued from a tape in the collection of John Noreen, member of
The Rose Garden. This demo of the song "Till Today" is Clark running through the song for the band who would cut it on their only
album, the 1968 self-titled effort on Atco Records (also being reissued and expanded at the same time as Gene Clark Sings For You).

Released with the full approval and cooperation with both the Estate of Gene Clark and the band, The Rose Garden, Gene Clark Sings
For You is produced for release by Grammy®-winner, Cheryl Pawelski with restoration and mastering by Grammy-winner, Michael
Graves. Liner notes by John Einarson, author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds' Gene Clark (Backbeat Books)
    and previously unseen photos.

    Glad All Over

The Wallowers have announced that their long-waited new studio album Glad All Over will be released on October 2, 2012 by Columbia Records. The band's new single, "Reboot The Mission," is a Clash-inspired
track with an unmistakable shufe backbeat, featuring Mick Jones on vocals and guitar. Recorded in Nashville, TN, at Dan Auerbach's (The Black Keys) Easy Eye Sound studio, the new album nds frontman Jakob Dylan joining original band members Greg Richling (bass) and Rami Jaffee (keyboards), with
Wallowers' longtime guitarist Stuart Mathis and drummer Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam) rounding out the lineup. The album was
produced by Jay Joyce (Emmylou Harris, Cage the Elephant) and mixed by Rich Costey (Bruce Springsteen).

The Wallowers rose to fame with their 4x platinum album Bringing Down The Horse, which featured four top charting singles including "6th Avenue
Heartache," "One Headlight," "The Difference," and "Three Marlenas." The two-time Grammy Award winners went on to sell over 7 million records worldwide with a series of critically acclaimed albums.

    The Birth Of Funk

Nobody in New Orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as Buddy Bol-den, whose Funky Butt became a staple in the repertoire of the city's early jazz bands. Jacksonville, Florida, 1960. Charles 'Hungry' Williams mentors young Clayton Fillyau after he had just joined the James Brown band: 'I don't care where you put it on those drums, remember where '1' is and you'll never lose the time.' Listen to Hungry on Huey Smith's Talk To Me Baby and then listen to how Clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on James Brown's I've Got Money. Earl King's Trick Bag, prefiguring the Meters, is as good an example of early New Orleansfunk as can be found. Not everything on here was cut in New Orleans. New York singer Vernon Harrel's Slick Chick is held together by an intriguingly syncopated bass line that hints at late '60s Studio One dub. And in case you think any of this was new, listen to Zutty Singleton's drum break on Victoria Spivey's Funny Feathers from 1929. Or Earl Palmer's sixteenth notes, off-backbeat snare accents and double-tempo hi-hats in 1953 on Professor Longhair's Tipitina and Who's Foolin' You.

    Fool's Gold

    Translucent Gold Vinyl

My greatest hope is that it ends up becoming the soundtrack to some perfect romance, or at the very least a great cocktail party," says Jill Barber of her new album, 'Fool's Gold. Jill - aka "Canada's sweetheart" - is a two-time Juno Award nominee and Montreal Jazz Fest headliner whose last album hit #1 on the iTunes Jazz charts, and landed her a national segment with NPR. She has collaborated with Josh Ritter, Ron Sexsmith, and Kris Kristofferson has called her a "damn good songwriter." She also published a children's book, entitled 'Music is for Everyone,' this May. 'Fool's Gold' explores every nook of Jill's musical history: sultry torch songs, Hank Williams-inspired ballads, an homage to the golden era of the Brill Building, Motown and beyond. Lead single "Broken For Good" ventures into the early days of Motown with its strong backbeat, horns, a driving bass line and immediate pop appeal. She channels Patsy Cline on "The Careless One," a bittersweet Western, full of resignation and sorrow. As Jill puts it, "It hurts me to sing it, just a little. But that's how I know it is a keeper." The record was produced in Toronto by longtime collaborators and bandmates Les Cooper and Drew Jurecka.

    Orchestral Variations

Minor Victories announce Orchestral Variations, instrumental interpretations of their self-titled debut!

"I don't really know that much about music in terms of theory, notes, scales etc. I generally just fuck about with things until it sounds right to my ear So I guess to call this album 'Orchestral Variations,' it would have to be in the loosest ever sense of the term.

When we were putting together the Minor Victories album, a lot of the music came about through string arrangements, motifs, melodies, countermelodies and other such noodlings I was messing about with. This record kind of takes it back to that initial point, and re-imagines the whole record from that standpoint-the bare bones, the hint at a vocal melody, not relying on any backbeat-but stripping the songs back to the base elements and then piece-by-piece making an entirely new record. It takes the songs and elements around them and the phrases into a new place, mostly born out of hindsight and I guess a curiosity to fuck around with it all long enough until it sounded right to my ear. From all that an entirely new record was formed. It's not a remix album, or b-sides it's just another way at looking/hearing things." - James Lockey on Orchestral Variations

    Planetarium

Planetarium is a concept album that occasionally gives way to ambient interludes and majestic brass chorales, buttressed by a percussive drive that keeps the momentum skyward. In spite of all the experimentation in sound and style, Sufjan's vocals provide a clear and coherent center of gravity. The album includes some of his most diverse vocal performances to date (from soft hush to guttural scream), and whether he's singing through effects pedals, vocoders, auto-tune or not, his voice delivers an ambitious flight map through the cosmos. Planetarium is an album co-composed by four musicians: Bryce Dessner, James McAlister, Nico Muhly, and Sufjan Stevens.

Flanked by a string quartet and a consort of seven trombones, this unique collaborative ensemble has assembled an expansive song cycle that explores the Sun, the Moon, the planets and other celestial bodies of our solar system (and beyond) through soundscape, song, science and myth. The result of this creative alliance is a musical and aesthetic journey as far-reaching as its subject: from lush piano ballads to prog-rock political anthems, curious electronic back-beats to classical cadenzas, the vast musical styles seek to explore the diversity and mystery of our cosmos. The subject of the album is not just the wilderness of outer space, but the interior space of human consciousness and how it engages.
