Basements have long been associated with raw, off-the-cuff rock n roll, the damp and dark spaces serving as the woodshedding venues for countless bands. Yet no basement is more famous, and none yielded music as familiarly weird, wholesomely American, joyously loose, and identifiably humorous as that in the upstate New York house dubbed Big Pink the location where, during the summer and early fall of 1967, Bob Dylan and The Band played a vivid tapestry of covers, originals, and traditionals that signaled the advent of Americana. Inimitable, the particulars of The Basement Tapes especially, the gather-round-in-a-huddle assembly of the instrumentalists, home-made character, domestic vibe, and low-volume nature of the recordings come to fore here in a manner that takes the listener down the stairs at 2188 Stoll Road and brings the images of Dylan, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, and Co. to life.
Fresh off experiencing a motorcycle accident and the wrath of audiences hostile to his embrace of amplified music, Dylan elected to retreat to the comforts of rural and family life. He soon began collaborating with members of the Band in his house, ultimately moving the sessions to Big Pink. Informal, peaceful, relaxed, open-minded: The collaborations blanket country stomps, roots hootenannies, forgotten spirituals, earthy originals, chaotic marches, dreamscapes, dance tunes, folk laments, catch-as-you-can improvisations. On The Basement Tapes, mythical ghosts and dead legends reappear, reveling in the absurdity, comedy, mystery, aura, and alchemy.
In Invisible Republic, his scintillating book about the sessions, cultural critic Greil Marcus states: At a time when the country was tearing itself apart in a war at home over a war abroad, the music was funny and comforting; it was also strange, and somehow incomplete. Out of some odd displacement of art and time, the music seemed both transparent and inexplicable when it was first heard, and it still does. Indeed, The Basement Tapes appear to emanate from an indefinable chasm between modern and ancient, self-evident and mysterious, shapeless and fully formed, abstract and concrete, histories unwritten and chronicled. Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes - many found only recently - this three-LP set includes 38 highlights of Dylan's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band.
Among Bob Dylan's many cultural milestones, the legendary Basement Tapes have long fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics alike. Having transformed music and culture during the early 1960s, Dylan reached unparalleled heights across 1965 and 1966 through the release of three historic albums, the groundbreaking watershed single ''Like A Rolling Stone,'' a controversial and legendary 'electric' performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and wildly polarizing tours of the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Dylan's mercurial rise and prodigious outpouring of work during that decade came to an abrupt halt in July 1966 when he was reported to have been in a serious motorcycle accident in upstate New York.
Recovering from his injuries and away from the public eye for the first time in years, Dylan ensconced himself, along with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and, later, Levon Helm, in the basement of a small house, dubbed ''Big Pink'' by the group, in West Saugerties, New York. This collective, which would come to be known as Bob Dylan and The Band, recorded more than a hundred songs over the next several months including traditional covers, wry and humorous ditties, off-the cuff performances and, most important, dozens of newly-written Bob Dylan songs, including future classics ''I Shall Be Released,'' ''The Mighty Quinn,'' ''This Wheel's On Fire'' and ''You Ain't Going Nowhere.''
When rumors and rare acetates of some of these recordings began surfacing, it created a curiosity strong enough to fuel an entirely new segment of the music business: the bootleg record. In 1969, an album mysteriously titled Great White Wonder began showing up in record shops around the country, and Dylan's music from the summer of 1967 began seeping into the fabric of popular culture, penetrating the souls of music lovers everywhere. With each passing year, more and more fans sought out this rare contraband, desperate to hear this new music from the legendary Bob Dylan.
The actual recordings, however, remained commercially unavailable until 1975, when Columbia Records released a scant 16 of them on The Basement Tapes album (that album also included eight new songs by The Band, without Dylan).
A critical and popular success, The Basement Tapes went Top 10 in the US and UK, with John Rockwell, of The New York Times, calling it ''one of the greatest albums in the history of American popular music,'' Paul Nelson, in Rolling Stone, praising the tracks as ''the hardest, toughest, sweetest, saddest, funniest, wisest songs I know'' and the Washington Post noting that ''...Dylan has to rank as the single greatest artist modern American pop music has produced.'' Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ rating in the Village Voice, where it topped the annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.

After Dylan was injured in a motorcycle accident he concealed himself from the public's gaze for a long while to work with The Band at houses in and around Woodstock where Bob Dylan and members of The Band lived.
In that period of time they recorded more than 100 tracks together.
And even though the songs were recorded in 1967, this official bootleg wasn't released until 1975.
Although some of the songs on 'The Basement Tapes' are humorous, most of the songs dwell on nothingness, betrayal and a quest for salvation and they possess a rootsy quality that anticipates the Americana genre.
'The Basement Tapes' reached #7 in the Billboard Top 200 charts.

The 4LP I'm Not There set features songs from and inspired by this film. The new interpretations of Bob Dylan songs are performed by an eclectic cavalcade of acclaimed and celebrated contemporary musicians including Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Sonic Youth, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Mark Lanegan and many others!

Yet the whimsical moods, hallucinogenic prose, humorous angles, transparent mistakes, and noncommittal themes give a pretty clear idea at what the Bard hinted as he emerged from being labeled as a reluctant generation spokesperson and folk savior after releasing two highly intellectual, socially pioneering sets replete with protest songs. Dylan needed to take a breath, step back from the drama, and reevaluate his surroundings. Another Side of Bob Dylan is all that and more.
As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is thoroughly humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic LP from the original master tapes and pressing it on 45RPM LPs at RTI. The end result is the very finest, most transparent analog stereo edition of Another Side of Bob Dylan ever produced. Be there as the Minnesota native spends the evening of June 9, 1964 in Columbias Studio A and, displaying an openness hed never before revealed in a formal environment, lays down the songs that compromise his fourth album.
Featuring minimal editing, Another Side of Bob Dylan is naked, truthful, and whimsical. Mobile Fidelitys reissue illuminates the artists conditionhe laughs in the midst of songs, experiences a few false starts, hits a couple of bum notes, occasionally sings as if hes stumbling down a Manhattan sidewalk after having one too many at a smoky pub, prizes rawness over perfectionwith microscopic accuracy. Indeed, Dylans slightly woozy and completely playful state related to his having downed a handful of bottles of Beaujolais during the sessions.
The uninhibited joie de vive is discernable in the rattling piano lines on Black Crow Blues, seemingly subconscious ramble of the hysterical folk rhyming of Motorpsycho Nightmare, bluesy dream sequencing throughout I Dont Believe You, and intentionally out-of-tune yodeling during All I Really Want to Do. On a majority of the prized set, Dylan lets his guard down, but does so in clever manners that speak to his surrealist imagination and biting wit. He possesses the rare ability to make planned strategies appear spontaneous, to challenge audiences with stinting wordplay and minimalist melodies that provide a deceptive false security.
And so the apparently autobiographical and self-aware My Back Pages, one of the earliest examples of Dylans immersion into symbolist prose and abstract metaphor, remains controversial for its on-the-surface denouncement of his earlier condemnations of social institutions and injustices. Peeled back, the tune is a brilliant releasean essential escape hatch for Dylan to both relieve himself of unneeded pressures and distance himself from pundits. As an indelible piece of art, it succeeds in masquerading obvious meaning while simultaneously forcing listeners to question their own actions. Quintessential Dylan.
As is the trifecta of relationship-themed compositions that closes the record, as well as the eternal Chimes of Freedom, the standard that journalist Paul Williams dubbed Dylans Sermon on the Mount. Tomorrow Is My TurnRhiannon Giddens, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, makes her solo recording debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, due out on Nonesuch Records. (The vinyl will follow on March 3.) The album was produced by T Bone Burnett.
Burnett first worked with Giddens when she performed last fall at a concert he curated at New York City's Town Hall that was later broadcast on Showtime: Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of "Inside Llewyn Davis." Backstage, Burnett was immediately moved to ask if he could produce a record with her. "It was clear the first time I heard her at rehearsal that Rhiannon is next in a long line of singers that include Marian Anderson, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe," Burnett says. "We need that person in our culture."
For her first solo disc, Giddens chose a broad range of songs from genres as diverse as gospel, jazz, blues, and country. In addition to the traditional "Black Is the Color," tracks include Hank Cochran's "She's Got You," made famous by Patsy Cline; Dolly Parton's "Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind"; "O Love Is Teasin'," popularized by the Kentucky-reared "mother of folk" Jean Ritchie; and Elizabeth Cotton's "Shake Sugaree."
"I had already started putting together a list of songs that didn't really fit into the Chocolate Drops world," Giddens explains. "At the top was 'Tomorrow Is My Turn' [immortalized by Nina Simone]. Seeing Nina do it on YouTube was revelatory. I knew she'd gone through a lot of hard times, as so many people did in that time period. Watching her sing this song, with the words 'tomorrow is my turn,' I began to think about the struggle of her and women like her." The significance of this song led Giddens to make it the title of the album as well. "Other songs started getting on my list and they were all by women or interpreted by women," she says.
Tomorrow Is My Turn was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, with a multi-generational group of players whom Burnett assembled. Among them are fiddle player Gabe Witcher and double bassist Paul Kowert of label-mates Punch Brothers; percussionist Jack Ashford of Motown's renowned Funk Brothers; drummer Jay Bellerose; guitarist Colin Linden; legendary backup singer Tata Vega; veteran Nashville session bassist Dennis Crouch; and Giddens' Drops touring band-mates, multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and beat-boxer Adam Matta.
Tomorrow Is My Turn follows Giddens' work with Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album also produced by Burnett that was released in November 2014. Take the 101 north out of Los Angeles, and you'll pass by Agoura Hills,where the core duo of
the band Dub Thompson grew up. Whatever you see in that town won't readily prepare you for
the music they wrote while there, but you're free to look.
"Most everyone who's in a group who's our age lives on the Internet," says guitarist Matt Pulos.
"The kinds of thingsthat have shaped our band aren't anchored to any one time or place."
Pulos and his bandmate, drummer Evan Laffer, are currently both 19 years old, and are putting
that line of thought to the test; their musical influences travel from the Midwestern malaise of
Big Black and Pere Ubu, to Kraut pioneers Can and Kraftwerk, while bowing to the British
belligerence of The Fall and This Heat.
Recording the album while living with Foxygen's Jonathan Rado at his rented house in
Bloomington, the band had its first taste of a heavy Indiana summer, and all the humidity and
insect life that buzzes along with it. "We woke up every day, ate hard-boiled eggs and stood on
a porch," says Pulos of the experience.
Their first collection of songs slyly unties the shoes of genre and convention, shape shifts
mischievously, and tramples on the promises delivered on the name itself.
There are only eight songs on this rangy debut.
Intense blasts of hook-filled noise rock ("Hayward!"), rock steady marionette stomp ("No
Time"), hypnotic bouts of doomy poetics ("Epicondyles"), outlandishly sexy groove rock
("Dograces"), and a number of other bite-sized forays into parts unknown are made manifest
across 9 Songs.
The vibes are strong here. Pulos sings and plays like he's working out long-standing grudges,
pulling the most sinewy tones from an acoustic guitar and ripping huge chunks of demon flesh
out of his electric. Laffer matches him step for step on the drums, an exacting presence behind
the kit who pushes even the band's more placid moments into bouts of tension. Together they
succeed in animating their musical ideas to startling, almost unnatural life. Reverb units,
keyboards,samples and processing gluing everything together,saturated in the August heat and
worn in until they sound second nature, it's like somehow you've been listening to these songs

AbandonGot Pitchfork Rising and was named one of the best
artists of 2013 by Spin Magazine.
Margaret Chardiet was born and raised in New York City She has been making
power electronics/death industrial music under the name Pharmakon for five
years. As a founding member of the Red Light District collective in Far Rockaway,
ny she has been a figurehead in the underground experimental scene since the age
of Seventeen. She points out that the environment there amongst so many other
experimental artists (amongst them Yellow Tears & Haflings) inspired her to keep
making increasingly challenging work. She describes her drive to make noise music
as something akin to an exorcism where she is able to express, her "deep-seated
need/drive/urge/possession to reach other people and make them FEEL something
[specifically] in uncomfortable/confrontational ways." Engineered by Sean Ragon
of Cult of Youth at his self-built recording studio Heaven Street, Abandon is
Pharmakon's first proper studio album and also her first widely distributed release.
Unlike other experimental projects, Pharmakon does not improvise when performing or recording. She is concise and exact; each song/movement is linear with a
clear trajectory. Perhaps more than any other style of music, noise is a genre almost
exclusively dominated by male performers. Spin Magazine is apt to point out that
her, "perfectionism might explain why her recordings are few and far between-
a rarity in a scene where noise bros want to puke out hour after endless hour of
stoned basement jams into a limitless stream of limited-edition tapes. Her music
may be as cuddly as a trepanning drill, but it's also just as precise: She glowers in
measured silence as often as she shrieks, and every serrated tone cuts straight to the
bone, a carefully calibrated interplay between frequency and resistance." The songs
on this album were all written and recorded during a turbulent three month time
period during which several fundamental life changes forced her to begin living in
a completely new way and in a new space. She describes the lyrical themes of this
album as being about, "Loss. Losing everything. Relinquishing control. Complete

New MoonI kept recording more songs with no regard whether or not they were gonna be on anything. That's what I'm used to doing, recording all the time and not going, 'What should I record for this record?' Usually I put out whatever happened in the last six months. With this, I had way too many songs and no mechanism for picking between them.
Elliott Smith, Tape Op Magazine, 1996, on finishing Either/Or.
Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon. The album contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars). Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics. Only three songs have seen prior release ï¿½ all on compilations ï¿½ most extremely limited runs.
The final mixing for New Moon was done by Larry Crane, who is also the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults.LP 1

QuarterbacksQUARTERBACKS started as a short-lived duo playing too-fast love songs backed by guitar and a single snare drum. Basement style, old smelly carpets, house shows for punk and patch kids. This was in New
Paltz, a college town at the bottom of a mountain in upstate New York. Dean (Dean Engle, the band's songwriter/vocalist) worked at one of the town's two record shops, as K Records-obsessed small town boys
The QUARTERBACKS line-up combusted after a handful of shows. The songs sat dormant until January 2012 when Dean enlisted Max Restaino and Tom Christie to revive the project. The new three-piece
expanded the original vision, playing love-obsessed songs with limited affectation. The songs averaged under-2 minutes, and the DIY ethic remained firm. A few tape-only releases came into being (See the
brilliant Double Double Whammy Records of Brooklyn NY).
Two years of upstate basement shows further refined their efficient twee punk set, new songs slowly forming from familiar themes and chord patterns, progress through recursion. Down the street from the record
shop where Dean worked was Team Love Records, a record label that had relocated from Sugar Street in NYC's East Village to Church Street in New Paltz. The folks at Team Love and Dean found themselves
spending way too much time discussing favorite Cat's Miaow singles and post-Young Marble Giants projects.
On February 10th, 2015, Team Love will release the first official longplayer by QUARTERBACKS. It's 19 songs played in 22 minutes. It's fast, broken-hearted and full of people, places and things. BlessedHaving moved all around Canada and settling nowhere, Walter TV are contemporary
nomads. They formed their band in the basements and cottage-like houses of a
beach town outside Vancouver.
After Joe McMurray and Pierce McGarry moved to Montreal, they shared an
apartment with a constant revolving cast of characters. In a space often overpopulated
and reeking of cigarettes, they began recording Blessed. Simon Ankenman
would come by periodically, and with him they would finish most of the recordings
between there and LA. The band's two members, Joe and Pierce, were also busy
touring with Mac DeMarco, acting as his backing band. Mixing and recording
turned into a thing to do on the road.
Although the group prefers tape recordings to digital, they have never been militant.
Always trying to uphold their DIY sensibilities, Walter TV believes the music should
