La Di Da DiBattles are the Networked Band, or perhaps the-band-as network. An island chain linked by a unique combination of artistry, experimentation, technology and singular focus. Aband that holds computerized loops in their brains, leaves sweat on their machines and whose sonic heartbeat is almost brutally human.
Dave Konopka, Ian Williams and John Stanier have turned the tables on themselves this time, confronted their own ideas of what Battles is - and here on their third album, have willed an answer to that question into existence. As the name might imply, La Di Da Di is a mushrooming monolith of repetition.
Here is an organic techno thrum of nearly infinite loops that refuse to remain consistent. The rhythmic genus of Battles is here as ever; full frontal, heightened and unforgiving - the gauntlet through which melody and harmony must pass, assailed at every turn. Battles continue to be one of the best live bands on the road.1. The Yabba

The Battle Of Los AngelesRanked 426/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
After the success of Rage Against The Machine's eponymous debut LP and follow-up 'Evil Empire´ this third album is another hard-hitting collection of songs full of political and social consciousness. With their catchy, yet raw heavy riffs and grooves they succeeded to release another album with actual hitsingles ('Guerilla Radio' and 'Testify' ). However, it proved their last album full of original material; the follow-ups contained either covers (Renegades) or live-performances. With Battle of Los Angeles, the ´triple treat´ was completed.
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the album at no. 423 in their 500 Greatest Albums Ever list. After several musical excursions by all members, the original Rage Against The Machine line-up performed live on various occasions in 2007, but a new studio album has yet to see the light.

From out of the wreckage of the American Civil War, the great state of Nevada came into being on October 31st, 1864. Its creation immediately helped to secure the re-election of Abraham Lincoln, the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment and, ultimately, the future of the union. Today, that proud but painful history is enshrined in the two words emblazoned on the upper left-hand corner of the state flag: Battle Born.
That phrase has always resonated with Brandon Flowers. It's what The Killers named their studio in Las Vegas, and when the band reconvened last May to start work on the follow-up to 2008's Day & Age, it became first a song title, then a thematic touchstone, and eventually the name of the album itself. But not all battles are blood and thunder: after a yearlong hiatus that saw three of the four Killers launch solo careers, they quickly discovered that timing and circumstance can be daunting adversaries in their own right.
Safe to say, Battle Born's title was well-earned. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done, no question," says Brandon. "It's the longest we've ever taken to make a record, and the longest I've ever spent on the lyrics. We thought we had enough songs, but then we realized that we didn't, and so we had to pound away and grind it out until we were certain that we were ready."
A small-town drama of epic-scale proportions, "Runaways" is everything you could wish for from a Killers comeback single; an unmistakably American expression of romance and optimism that heralds their return with cyclonic, Who-esque guitars and a chorus big enough to be bellowed from one end of the Mojave to the other.
One of the album's oldest songs, the bare bones were written in 2009 on the Day & Age tour, but, says Brandon, "We never knew what to do with it. Day & Age was us trying to be more of a pop group, but Runaways was rootsy and American, and it threw me for a curve. I knew it was a powerful song. But when it came time to make the album, there was an understanding the four of us had that we were gonna do what we're good at. The Killers write a specific kind of song, and we're not gonna shy away from it. So 'Runaways' became a kind of launching pad."
More songs followed: the title track, a musical 'brother' to its lead single; "Here With Me," the album's heartstring-tugging emotional gravity-centre; the stadia-quaking electro-rock of "Flesh & Bone." By the time the band had satisfactorily refined that body of songs, however, none of the producers on their shortlist could commit to making a whole album, necessitating a process whereby they recorded in fits and starts with a stellar roll-call of names that included Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite, Damian Taylor, Stuart Price and Brendan O'Brien.
And therein lies Battle Born's real triumph. Recorded almost entirely at the studio that shares its name, it incorporates elements from each of the records that came before it; Hot Fuss' storytelling eye for detail; the yearning, mythic Americana of Sam's Town; the gratuitous hooks and pop nous of Day & Age; without sounding overtly like any one in particular. It's the sound of a band recognizing, and celebrating, their own identity. To borrow Brandon's maxim, Battle Born is The Killers "Doing what we do best."1. Flesh And Bone

Battle Of The Nudes (Pre-Order)Gord Downie's sophomore 2003 solo album, 'Battle Of The Nudes', ranges from some sublime spoken word pieces to straightforward rock songs. (PopMatters). Featuring a backing band credited as Country of Miracles including Julie Doiron, Josh Finlayson and members of experimental blues-rock band The Dinner Is Ruined, the album leaned closer to more traditional rock than its predecessor, but no less filled with Downie's singular poetry.
At the time of release, Downie wrote of the record: "I'm interested in doing anything that teaches me something," he concludes. "As a result, I've found that I'm writing more than ever. In fact, the day after I mastered this record, I was already back to writing with The Hip. Ultimately, what I want to do is more. I want to get better."1. Into The Night

Unholy SaviorHailing from the southern edge of Finland, BATTLE BEAST were founded in 2008 and soon established themselves with their trademark of pure crunching riffs, high screams, blistering solos and strong choruses. Taking the best elements of traditional heavy metal, the sextet is never afraid to add its own flavour to the recipe. After winning the 2010 Wacken Open Air "Metal Battle", and shortly after Finland's "Radio Rock Starba" competition, BATTLE BEAST soon caught the attention of Nuclear Blast. The worldwide release of the highly acclaimed debut album "Steel" in January of 2012 and a successful support tour with fellow Finns and label mates NIGHTWISH followed. September 2012 saw the original singer, Nitte Valo, leaving the band, to be replaced by a beautiful new front beast Noora Louhimo as they embarked on a tour with SONATA ARCTICA. With the refreshed line-up and an ever-growing hunger, BATTLE BEAST continued their march of success with their eponymous sophomore release in May 2013.
Following the success of "Battle Beast", charting at an amazing #5 in their native Finland and cracking the German Top 100, the band embarked on an extended European tour alongside German metal band POWERWOLF in late 2013 and then hit the road in Sweden and Norway opening for German metal institution U.D.O. Having spent the year playing headlining shows in their native Finland, as well as invading some of the biggest festivals in 2014 (among them the renowned Loud Park in Japan, German Metalfest and Sabaton Open Air in Falun, Sweden), plus supporting their German labelmates ACCEPT during their Finland tour in September, BATTLE BEAST now return to what they do best: to take it to the next level! "I thirst to go further as a human being and the music on this album represents a part of the ongoing spiritual journey - that's what I tend to I call it - which is my road onward. Music-wise the songs have been expanded to a wider area as an effort to call out emotions close to those I myself had during the times of birth of these songs," commented guitarist & vocalist Anton Kabanen about the upcoming new BATTLE BEAST album. "Unholy Savior" has been influenced by everything the band has been facing during the past months and clearly displays their increased hunger to succeed as a band.
Trying to explain the topics of the third BATTLE BEAST record, one will have to go deeper as the songs lyrics were born through an emotionally violent and bloody struggle, that main composer Anton Kabanen was going through at the time: Questioning his whole existence step by step, wondering if his dream had betrayed him. "Unholy Savior" reeks of death, agony, pain, hate, confusion, fear and insecurity, but it speaks of deep gratitude, longing, consolation and love. "The album had to be done this way - through emotional hell. Having transferred these things and emotions into songs I feel that I'm ready to move on. But like always, I wrote songs about the series Berserk, as well, and the reason behind writing songs about that particular series is that I can strongly relate to that, especially to certain characters and to their way of thinking and feeling," Anton adds. While with their previous album the young Finns did all the recording, producing and mixing themselves, "Unholy Savior" was produced by Anton Kabanen and co-produced by keyboardist Janne Björkroth and mixed by Matias Kupiainen at 5by5 Studios. Mastering was once again done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios and the actual recordings took place at Sound Quest Studio and JKB Studios. "Unholy Savior" will be released on January 09, 2015. On the very same day BATTLE BEAST will return to the European roads, along with the band that has been supporting them since day one. Swedish metal heroes SABATON did not only invite the band to play at their very own Sabaton Open Air, but also featured a cover version of BATTLE BEAST's 'Out Of Control' as a bonus track on their current charting success "Heroes". Skin & EarthThroughout a year long process, she began secretly working on an unprecedented idea writing and drawing her own comic book based around this alter ego of sorts. And on top of that, just to make things more difficult - an album to coincide with the whole thing.
Thus came Skin&Earth, the Canadian singer's fourth record and her most open and vulnerable to date. In the past, Lights wouldn't write about being angry or Lights wouldn't write a song about fighting or Lights wouldn't write about sex, she says. So En is me in another dimension, and I was able to write about all the things that I never wrote about before.
The album form of Skin&Earth also brings help from some of music's brightest including Corin Roddick of Purity Ring, Big Data and Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots. Everything that happened on this record was really fun and natural and felt like we were all working towards the same goal, she says. It was this organic mutual fan-ship kind of thing that brought it all together. She continues, This is the most fun I've had doing a record. I've never felt that I understood a record more and I've never felt like I understood a reason for a record more.
Ultimately for Lights, the most important takeaway from the story of Skin&Earth is of a young woman entranced by a spirit that she and she alone must overcome. This is based on internal, emotional stress and turmoil - stuff that I've dealt with and stuff that a lot of people have dealt with. I've always believed that all those battles can be fought and you come out of this stronger. And that was the foundation of the story, she says. At the end of the day, if nothing else, I want people, especially young women, to see in this character a little bit of themselves - see that an ordinary person can do amazing things and fight battles nobody else can see, and there's no shame in that. In fact, there's a lot of beauty in it.1. Intro

Songs Of PatienceThe title of Alberta Cross' new studio album, Songs of Patience is, in many ways, literal. It's been three long years since the band last released a full-length album. The highs and lows of their journey raised a grander set of ideas, infusing the 10-song set's title with additional universal meaning.
After touring extensively on their debut, Broken Side of Time, with bands like Them Crooked Vultures, Oasis, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and stopping at festivals like Bonnaroo and Sasquatch, Alberta Cross headed to an old, abandoned house in the middle of nowhere near Woodstock, NY. There, they braved the freezing winter and embraced a sense of the building's haunted past to envision ideas for a new records.
In the end, the record is the sum of three years' worth of parts, a struggle that concluded in victory. Three difference producers: Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), Mike Daly (Whiskeytown, Young the Giant) and Claudius Mittendorfer (Muse, Interpol). It opens new possibilities for the band's visceral live show, a notable facet of the group defined by their raucous, gritty onstage performances that swell the tracks into bigger, more expansive versions of themselves. Song of Patience has also, in many ways, become a decided source of inspiration for the band members, one they hope magnifies the personal battles and upsides of their fans.1. Magnolia

ParamoreParamore says of their latest self-titled album: It has been self-titled through nearly the entire process. In fact, what usually takes us weeks on end to sum up and put a label on only took us a five minute conversation this time around. The whole making of this album was a rediscovering of ourselves as a band and as friends. It was a process that allowed us the freedom to explore new territory artistically and to liberate ourselves as musicians, singers, as people! Sincerely, we feel that the best way to give it a name is just to call it what it is. This album is us.
The first single off the album is called Now. It feels like the perfect way to start this new journey we are embarking on not only as a band but as a movement. To show people that you can lose battles but come back and win full on wars. You can rise from ashes. You can make something out of even less than nothing. Marvin Gaye 1961 - 1965 (On Sale)Universal Music will release Marvin Gaye's first seven studio albums in a new vinyl box set titled 1961-1965.
The collection kicks off with the soul legend's Motown debut The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye (1961) which is full of jazz/pop standards from the like of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, while the second album, That Stubborn Kinda Fellow (1962) moves into R&B with Gaye co-writing many tracks including the song that launched Paul Young's career, Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home).
When I'm Alone I Cry (1964) is a product of Gaye's early battles with Berry Gordy over direction, with the singer again reluctant to embrace a soul/R&B sound and instead focusing on being a jazz vocalist. Together (1964) with Mary Wells was Gaye's first top 40 album in the US pop charts and the collection of show tunes and standards did provide a couple of top 20 singles. Hello Broadway was a third album in that year and a switch back to soul/R&B for How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You (1965) gave Marvin Gaye his first really big hit single, thanks to the Holland-Dozier-Holland penned title track. This vinyl box is completed by Gaye's Tribute To Nat King Cole which was released in November 1965 just nine months after Cole's death.
Marvin Gaye expert Harry Weinger has overseen this set which sees many of these early records back in print on vinyl for the first time in quite a while.

Starsailor was already a critic's darling in the band's native England during mid-2001, and the group's painfully melodic debut, Love Is Here, poised the band to rise in the shadows of Doves, Coldplay, and Travis. Starsailor, however, isn't as polished as its counterparts, but that's not to say Love Is Here isn't a beautiful piece of work. It's less lilting than Coldplay's Parachutes, and frontman James Walsh's aching vocals shape his angularity as a singer/songwriter.
Starsailor is a young band, and Love Is Here illustrates the group's sharp intellect inside basic acoustics. Singles such as the passionately violent Alcoholic and melancholic dark hues of Fever touch upon Starsailor's own pop stylings. The band isn't typically jaunty, for the members of Starsailor are a bit cynical. Lyrics reflect battles with self-discovery, independence, and being lovelorn; however, they're matches of a survivor.
Talk Her Down, one of the album's most gnarling tracks, bounces with light psychedelic patterns, and Good Souls is probably Starsailor's closest rock & roll moment. The live soundscape found on Love Is Here sets up the simplistic beauty of this new band. They didn't go for a grand bombast of crashing guitars and angst-ridden stories similar to Oasis and Manic Street Preachers. They go for something more positive as well -- each song soars with intricate musicianship and melodic lushness. Wigan native Richard Ashcroft would be pleased.1. Tie Up My Hands

WorldwildWelcome to Worldwild! Worldwild is the culmination of a long Pterodactyl adventure, an artrock odyssey through lush pastures of layered vocal harmonies, mountainous rhythms and thick, dark forests of fuzzy, piercing guitars. On Easter Sunday, 2008, in a rustic motel in backwoods Pennsylvania, one day before crossing the border into Canada, Pterodactyl discovered an experience (Worldwild) that they wanted to keep with them and pursue musically. They felt like they were on a family vacation through a colorful new reality, an experience of solitude and connectedness, alone yet one with everyone. When they returned to Brooklyn Joe began recording demos in his bedroom studio that would be the foundation for most of the material on the record, the sounds and textures of which were beautiful and intriguing, but seemed at first to be at odds with what the band had been known for in the past. But Pterodactyl had found a new, triumphant future in Worldwild: a schizophrenic, desperate idealism that shone through the confusion of the dozens of vocal tracks and guitar samples Joe had put down. The record that results, which they recorded with Jeremy Scott over six months in 2008, showcases many different facets of the band and its influences but maintains a narrative coalescence throughout, a story of hours upon hours singing alone into a bedroom computer, of frustration and redemption, of petty but heated personal battles between friends, melodies running rampant through sleepless summer nights, triumphant moments of trust and cooperation, and a faith and optimism in the spirit of adventure. Pterodactyl is Joe and Matt, Zach (Ex Models, Knyfe Hyts, the Seconds), and Jesse (Twin Powers, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth).

Every Color Of DarknessIt has been four years since Guillermo S. Herren released
anything significant from his most famous and respected
moniker, Prefuse 73 (though he did keep busy with live
shows, collaborations, and remixes). That's a long time for
virtually any artist, but it's an eternity for Herren, whose first
three Prefuse 73 albums dropped in the span of four years.
As if to make up for lost time, 2015 will see the release of
not one, but three major works from Prefuse 73. After
several albums that saw Herren progressively drift away
from the beatmaking prowess that made him synonymous
with emotionally resonant, damaged hip-hop, he's found
himself reinvigorated - thanks in large part to an emotionally
draining, creatively cashed few years. As Herren puts it, I've
come back to hyper focusing - immersing myself in the
sounds, rhythms, and formations that created Prefuse 73 in
the first place. Recently, I've found a new life in the whole
process of refining what I've created over the years as
"Prefuse". Right now I'm at my most confident and
comfortable since 05/06.
It shows. The conclusion of a triptych of new recordings,
Every Color of Darkness basks in the darkest corners of
Prefuse 73's world, finding an eerie romanticism in manic
beats and damaged jazz. It's a record that showcases his
uncanny ability to excavate and exploit a source of light
buried in pitch black.
For an artist who has played an undeniably integral role in
the careers of so many influential artists - from MF Doom
to Battles to Flying Lotus - it's not just refreshing to hear
him return to top form...it's revelatory.1. Wasted (Intro)
