First mixed and released in stereo for the first time in 2012. These stereo mixes were created using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes. The exception is Good Vibrations, which is a computer-generated stereo mix by Derry Fitzgerald. A remix in stereo wasn't possible because the original multi-track tape has never been located. The stereo mixes for Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), Beach Boys' Party! and Smiley Smile were produced and mixed by Mark Linett, and co-produced by Alan Boyd.

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

After the much-discussed, uncompleted Smile project - which was supposed to take the innovations of Pet Sounds to even grander heights - collapsed, the Beach Boys released Smiley Smile in its place. (To clarify much confusion: Smiley Smile is an entirely different piece of work than Smile would have been, although some material that ended up on Smiley Smile would have most likely been used on Smile. Also, much of Smiley Smile was in fact recorded after the Smile sessions had ceased.), writes AllMusic.com

For fans expecting something along the lines of Sgt. Pepper (and there were many of them), Smiley Smile was a major disappointment, replacing psychedelic experimentation with spare, eccentric miniatures. Heard now, outside of such unrealistic expectations, it's a rather nifty, if rather slight, effort that's avant garde in the extreme. 'Wind Chimes,' 'Wonderful,' 'Vegetables,' and much of the rest is low-key psychedelic quirkiness, with abundant fine harmonies and unusual arrangements. The standouts, nonetheless, were two recent hit singles in which Brian Wilson's ambitions were still intact: The inscrutable mini-opera 'Heroes and Villains,' and the number one hit 'Good Vibrations,' one of the few occasions where the group managed to be recklessly experimental and massively commercial at the same time. - AllMusic.com

It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life. I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album. - Paul McCartney

All of us, Ginger (Baker), Jack (Bruce), and I consider Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest pop LPs to ever be released. It encompasses everything that's ever knocked me out and rolled it all into one. - Eric Clapton

For the early part of the Beach Boys' career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format - they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Brian Wilson - famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger - who suffers from partial deafness. Still, apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965.

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

Pet Sounds is famous for its use of multiple layers of unorthodox instrumentation as well as other cutting edge audio techniques for its time. It's considered the best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound.

    Endless Summer

Originally released in 1974, Endless Summer is the Beach Boys' double LP compilation of singles and album tracks of their material from 1963-1966, with all but one cut predating Pet Sounds. Most of the group's best-loved singles are represented and the album soared to number one and spent three years on the charts. Endless Summer helped re-invigorate the Beach Boys career and it introduced the band to a whole new generation.

All Summer Long was notable not only for racheting up the Beach Boys' standards and essentially bidding farewell to the surf songs that inspired both their name and reputation, but also for going toe-to-toe with one of rock's most explosive phenomena - Beatlemania - and coming away victorious, with the single 'I Get Around' soaring to No. 1 in the spring of 1964. Essentially another loose concept record (revolving around the innocent hedonistic pursuits of an idyllic SoCal summer) that takes its cue from the effervescent title track, it also documents Brian's restless creativity pushing the band toward its performing peak. - Amazon.com

Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.

The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision.

Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions - evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own - but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market, says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist.

The Beach Boys' practice of double-tracking their vocals really lends itself to stereo mixes. Split left and right, as they are on a lot of those early stereo versions, those doubled vocal parts can really envelop the listener, surrounding them with Wilsons, Loves and Jardines!

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

To meet the standards of Analogue Productions, our Beach Boys album reissues had a mission to achieve: Present the band's music the way that Brian Wilson - famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger - intended. Mono mixes created under Wilson's supervision were how the surf rockin' California crew rose to fame! And we've got 'em!

For the early part of the Beach Boys career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format - they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Wilson, who suffers from partial deafness. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.

We've taken 10 of the most classic, best-sounding Beach Boy titles ever and restored them to their mono glory!

But there's no disputing that the close harmonies and one-of-a-kind rhythms of hits like "Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Little Deuce Coupe" and more lend themseleves naturally to stereo. So we've got your 2-channel needs covered with prime stereo mix versions as well.

Mastered by Kevin Gray, most from the original master tapes, and plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings, the finest LP pressing facility in the world, these are awesome recordings to experience. And the look of each album befits its sonic superiority! Presented in old school Stoughton tip-on jackets, these time honored favorites shine brighter than the originals!

Put simply, this is the Beach Boys at their mid-'60s prime. Ironically, the band's greatest evolutionary leap was spurred by its leader, Brian Wilson, who decided to drop out of the band's live performances after a December 1964 nervous breakdown to concentrate on honing the Beach Boys' studio sound. With Wilson's productions gaining a significant new depth and confidence (note the innovative modulations on 'Dance, Dance, Dance'), the first half of Today seems a logical, upbeat step forward from its predecessors. But it's the album's second act that steals the show, setting the stage for the triumph of Pet Sounds. Indeed, it's easy to imagine gorgeous, introspective tracks such as 'Please Let Me Wonder,' 'She Knows Me Too Well,' and 'In the Back of My Mind' intertwined with the best of Sounds. - Amazon.com

Released just one month after the Surfer Girl album, Little Deuce Coupe was, incredibly, the Beach Boys' fourth album in less than a year. Brian Wilson and the band responded by turning in arguably their most consistent effort to date - and a concept album, to boot. Deuce Coupe expanded the band's subject matter to encompass 1963 America's burgeoning love affair with hot rods, surrounding previously released cuts such as the title track, 409, and others with strong new material (much of it cowritten by Wilson and a DJ, Roger Christian). A highpoint: the a cappella James Dean tribute A Young Man Is Gone (a reworking of Bobby Troup's beautiful Their Hearts Were Full of Spring), a prime example of Wilson's arranging genius and the band's vocal prowess. Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring had been a standard for the vocal group The Four Freshmen, whose lush and distinctive jazz-based vocal arrangements had a huge influence on Brian's musical development.

Brian Wilson's eponymous solo debut for Sire in 1988 launched an extended period of renewal for the iconic Beach Boys songwriter. Rhino revisits Wilson's solo career with a new 18-song collection that mixes studio and live recordings with two previously unreleased tracks: Run James Run, a new song Wilson wrote and recorded for this collection, and Some Sweet Day, an unreleased gem he wrote with Andy Paley in the early 1990s for an unfinished recording project.

Worth noting on Surf's Up is Stephen Desper's engineering work - the entire album was mixed to a center channel quad matrix that he was developing at the time.

Surf's Up hit the Top 30 on its first release, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard LP charts - the highest chart placement the group had had since 1967. At the time of its release, Surf's Up was hailed by many as a comeback for The Beach Boys, who were beginning to attract raves for their live performances, including highly acclaimed sets at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall.

Carl Wilson makes solid contributions on Surf's Up with Long Promised Road and Feel Flows, and the album also features stellar tracks by Al Jardine and Mike Love, as well as Bruce Johnston's most enduring composition, the gently nostalgic Disney Girls (1957), but the album's twin jewels are both from Brian Wilson - Til I Die and the title track - one of the centerpieces of the then-unreleased Smile (cowritten by lyricist Van Dyke Parks and here given that album's Child Is Father to the Man as a glorious coda.)

Surf's Up track A Day in the Life of a Tree is the first in a series of Brian's songs that close the album. It's simultaneously one of Brian Wilson's most deeply touching and unusual compositions; he is the narrator and object of the song (though not the vocalist; co-writer Jack Rieley lends a hand), lamenting his long life amid the pollution and grime of a city park while the somber tones of a pipe organ build atmosphere. Til I Die, isn't the love song the title suggests; it's a haunting, fatalistic piece of pop surrealism that appeared to signal Brian's retirement from active life.

Surfer Girl, the Beach Boys' third album for Capitol Records, was the first produced by Brian Wilson on his own (the previous two, Surfin Safari and Surfin USA (Mono & Stereo Remasters), were co-produced by the late Capitol A&R man, Nick Venet). This album was The Boys' first really great effort; there's not a bad track in the lot, including the title song, Catch A Wave, In My Room, Hawaii, Our Car Club, Little Deuce Coupe, Your Summer Dream, and more.

Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.

At first a somewhat un-noticed Wilson brother at the beginning of the Beach Boys' career, Dennis Wilson later matured into an excellent songwriter, producer, and vocalist. His heartfelt ballads and pop gems contributed heavily to the Beach Boys' late 60's and early 70's output.

A 'target' of female enthusiasm, Dennis was assigned lead vocals for a few early novelty songs: Little Girl (You're My Miss America), Surfers Rule, and This Car of Mine. His first hit came in 1965 when Do You Wanna Dance opened the The Beach Boys Today! album and cracked the Top 20.

After the high peaks and deep valleys of the Beach Boys career during the late '60s, Dennis began writing songs (Little Bird, Be Still) for 1968's 'Friends'. Throughout the early '70s, Beach Boys fans counted on at least two Dennis songs on each LP, often tender ballads. He made his first attempt at a solo album as early as 1970, but quietly released only one single. He started to work again in 1975, recording with friend and producer Gregg Jakobsen during 1976 to complete Pacific Ocean Blue.

Though Dennis had started to work on his second album (provisionally titled 'Bamboo') even before the release of Pacific Ocean Blue, increasing problems caused several holdups.

In late 1983 Wilson drowned while diving around his boat in Marina del Ray, CA. Pacific Ocean Blue is his only complete solo effort released to the public and we're pleased to offer it in audiophile quality!

The Beach Boys With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Pre-Order)

A new album pairing original, classic vocal performances by the Beach Boys with newly-written symphonic arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, will be released by Capitol/UMe.

The RPO convened in the hallowed Studio 2 at Abbey Road on 8 and 9 March this year to record the new orchestral arrangements. The orchestra was conducted by Steve Sidwell and Sally Herbert, who also wrote several of the arrangements.

"I always knew the vocal arrangements I did back in the 1960s would lend themselves perfectly for a symphony and there is no better one in the world than the Royal Philharmonic," says Brian Wilson of the new album. "I am both proud and humbled by what they have created using our songs and I hope everyone falls in love with it like I have."

Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love adds: "This album is one of a kind. I think the fact that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has accompanied the Beach Boys with these great arrangements is just a phenomenal thing. It's a whole other dimension to our music."

The Beach Boys' Al Jardine reflects: "Don Reedman and Nick Patrick did a terrific job on this. I can't imagine having more fun than taking some of these great songs and putting them into this perspective. They did a beautiful job of arranging the music around the original vocals, which I think is a terrific idea. It makes the music feel new all over again!"

Their Beach Boys colleague Bruce Johnston, for his part, says" "When I listened to the album, I realized that the new arrangements performed by the orchestra didn't add the wrong kind of weight. They just added the beautiful fairy dust of the orchestra to what we already recorded. It's another interpretation of us without losing the groundwork of us. I really like it."

Album co-producer Nick Patrick says: "I'm a complete and utter fan of the Beach Boys and the way their music makes you feel. The Beach Boys' music is so multi-layered - you can experience it on so many layers. You've got the obvious harmonies, which are amazing. But what we found making this record is when you dig down into the arrangements, they're extraordinary. They're fresh. They're new. They're complex. They're beautiful and constructed in a completely original way."

Still, apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965.

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

Still, bottom line, the mono mixes were where Brian Wilson paid intense attention, and the dedication paid off!

We've taken 10 of the most classic, best-sounding Beach Boy titles ever and restored them to their mono glory!

But there's no disputing that the close harmonies and one-of-a-kind rhythms of hits like "Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Little Deuce Coupe" and more lend themselves naturally to stereo.

Summer Days features another Wilson world-beater production, California Girls, and the band's second No. 1 single, Help Me, Rhonda. Ever pressured by commercial concerns, Wilson and the band created what was in essence the true follow-up to the All Summer Long album. Still, there's a level of musical sophistication to tracks such as Salt Lake City, the Phil Spector tribute Then I Kissed Her, Summer Means New Love and Let Him Run Wild.

With this quiet QRP pressing of Surfin' Safari you'll enjoy the smash hit title cut as well as 409,Summertime Blues and more as the fledgling Beach Boys proudly display their garage band roots in this, their debut album for Capitol Records.

Their classic songs epitomize the spirit of the California lifestyle and The Beach Boys have become an American icon to a worldwide audience. The Beach Boys' first hit Surfin' (1961) launched a string of chart-topping songs that spans nearly forty years and includes eternal anthems of American youth: Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, California Girls, Help Me Rhonda, Barbara Ann, Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Rock and Roll Music, Kokomo and more.

Their chart success alone would have earned The Beach Boys their spot in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (they were inducted in 1988), not to mention 32 RIAA Platinum and Gold record awards and worldwide sales estimated at more than 100 million. But The Beach Boys' story is one of not only commercial but also artistic success. Their unique blend of harmonies, musical arrangements and timeless lyrics still place the music of The Beach Boys among the All-Time Favorites of today's music critics. As an example, VH-1 named Pet Sounds as the No. 3 album in the Top 100 Albums in Rock 'n' Roll History, as judged in a poll of musicians, executives and journalists. The Beach Boys were honored at the 2001 Grammy Awards, receiving The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.

Surfin' USA was the Beach Boys' real breakthough album, showing Brian Wilson asserting himself in the studio as both a premier songwriter and arranger.

Besides the hit title track and its popular drag-racing flip side (Shut Down), AllMusic.com notes that Surfin' USA has a lovely, heartbreaking ballad (Lonely Sea) and a couple of strong Brian Wilson originals (The Noble Surfer and Farmer's Daughter).

There are also a surprisingly high quotient of instrumentals (five) that demonstrate that ... the Beach Boys could play respectably gutsy surf rock as a self-contained unit. Indeed, the album as a whole is the best they would make, prior to the late '60s, as a band that played most of their instruments, rather than as a vehicle for Brian Wilson's ideas. The LP was a huge hit, vital to launching surf music as a national craze, and one of the few truly strong records to be recorded by a self-contained American rock band prior to the British Invasion. - AllMusic.com

Sunflower is considered by most fans - and some of the Beach Boys themselves - to be their finest work after Pet Sounds. More so than any other Beach Boys album, it's a true group collaboration, with Carl Wilson overseeing the production and mixdowns. Brian Wilson himself was very involved in the creation of this album, which includes one of his most enduring compositions, This Whole World, as well as an expansion of a fragment from the Smile sessions, Cool Cool Water, featuring some of the band's most intricate and playful interlocking vocal parts. Sunflower is also the home of some of Dennis Wilson's most enduring work, including the uptempo album opener Slip On Through, and the classic Beach Boys ballad Forever.

Sunflower, originally titled Add Some Music (after the group's initial single for Warners, Add Some Music To Your Day, which failed to garner enough airplay to become a hit), underwent several lineup revisions before its eventual release in the late summer of 1970. The album, hailed by the U.K. music press as The Beach Boys' Sgt. Pepper, failed to sell, despite glowing reviews and wide acclaim for its rich sonic texture (due in no small part to the efforts of Beach Boys' engineer Stephen Desper, a noted pioneer in quadrophonic and surround sound technologies).

    No Pier Pressure

New Album Features Collaborations with Beach Boys Bandmates, Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, and Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian

He is one of popular music's most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most gifted and influential composers of the past 50 years. For the release of his 11th solo studio album, titled No Pier Pressure, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys.

For the No Pier Pressure sessions, Brian Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, with whom he co-produced The Beach Boys' No. 3 Billboard album That's Why God Made The Radio for the iconic band's 50th anniversary reunion in 2012. In addition, Wilson was joined at Hollywood's Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian, and trumpet master Mark Isham. Wilson has also brought in session all-stars Don Was, Jim Keltner, Dean Parks, and Kenny Aronoff. Members of Wilson's longtime touring band, including Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory also participated in the sessions, along with Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, and former bandmate Jeffrey Foskett.

Wilson and Thomas began collaborating on the new songs during The Beach Boys' whirlwind 50th anniversary activities throughout 2012, a banner year for the band which also included a GRAMMY® Award win for Brian for The Beach Boys' long-awaited SMiLE Sessions release. He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.

Always most inspired when creativity is given time and space to freely flow, Wilson initially envisioned the sessions for his new album with The Beach Boys in mind, but that was not to be. Wanting to find the right voices to complete his vision, Wilson saw an opportunity to finally become hip with his kids and recruited some amazing young vocalists who have been inspired by his music to do the job.

Throughout his iconic career, Wilson has brought ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others. For more than 50 years, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from Wilson's imagination into glorious song.

Camped out at Ocean Way, Wilson took a fluid, woodshedding approach to the recording process, deftly tailoring the vocal and instrumental parts and arrangements to each participant. Wilson worked to hone the arrangements, often assembling pieces from various takes, a signature style of recording he has enjoyed since his earliest sessions with The Beach Boys. In fact, several of the songs were written during the recording process.

Brian Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966's Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Wilson's innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," and the No. 1 smash "Good Vibrations" made The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s.

Brian Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 10 of his own albums released to date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the '60s, Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, which reached Billboard's Top 20 and earned him his first GRAMMY® Award for a recording. Wilson won his second GRAMMY Award® for producing The Beach Boys' acclaimed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions. Wilson has also performed major, sold-out SMiLE and Pet Sounds tours in recent years with his own band. Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a UK Music Hall of Fame inductee. As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® Award in 2001.

After the melancholy second side of Today!, Mike Love encouraged Brian Wilson to write more Beach-Boys signature fare which resulted in tracks like California Girls, Amusement Parks U.S.A., Then I Kissed Her and a re-worked version of Help Me, Rhonda.

    L.A.

L.A. (Light Album) is the twenty-third studio album by The Beach Boys, released on March 19, 1979. Produced by Bruce Johnston, James William Guercio and the band itself, the album was The Beach Boys' first on CBS Records, and the first to feature contributions from Johnston since his departure from the band in 1972. Johnston was brought in when it became clear that the ailing Brian Wilson was in no fit state to produce the album, and has remained in the band ever since.
