    Brooklyn-based four piece Bear Hands announce the release of their anticipated sophomore album
    Distraction on Cantora Records. "Giants," the simultaneously whiplash-inducing and silkily-grooving debut single off Distraction,was released at the tail end of last year and quickly embraced at radio across the country with spins from tastemakers such as SiriusXM's AltNation, KKDO, KRBZ, KROX, WWCD, WBRU, WBUZ, WXXJ and WHFS. "Giants" is available now digitally in the US and Canada on iTunes and Amazon, and can be posted via their official lyric video HERE, as well as on SoundCloud HERE.


    This winter, Bear Hands will join forces with fellow Brooklynites Miniature Tigers for a co-headlining tour, with support from Total Slacker. The jaunt begins on February 27th at Rough Trade in Brooklyn and wraps up on March 20th at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Additionally, the band will play South By Southwest in Austin in support of Distraction, with specific showcases to be announced soon. Full tour dates are below.


    With Distraction, Bear Hands have shrugged off the notion of second album jitters to create an expansive sound that grew over three long years and thousands of miles on the road. Produced by guitarist Ted Feldman and mixed by James Brown (Nine Inch Nails, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters), Distraction is a violently self-assured record which sees the quartet of Dylan Rau, TJ Orscher, Val Loper and Feldman distilling their anxieties and pleasures alike into perfectly twisted pop nuggets.
    After releasing their debut LP Burning Bush Supper Club, Bear Hands criss-crossed America opening for the legendary GZA, Passion Pit, and AWOLNATION only to return home to Brooklyn and be distracted by the minutia of modern life and shallow urbanity. While avoiding each other for months, the band frittered away its time with help from the internet, serial monogamy, and recreational drugs.


    Fortunately, this distance allowed the band to approach Distraction with a revolutionary new perspective. Their minds expanding and hearts imploding, Bear Hands set about matching new songs to familiar soundscapes. From the propulsive, infectious rhythms of "Giants" and the angular, warped melodies of "Bone Digger" to the widescreen sweep of "Thought Wrong," Distraction demands your attention - calling out for love from behind a mask of ones and zeroes, cardboard and vinyl.

    The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart

    It was the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil that launched the ascent of their native sons in SEPULTURA (Portuguese for "grave") in 1983 with a trajectory unsuspectingly aimed at the worldwide metal music scene. A band with humble economic beginnings whose musical identity was forged in the context of living through Brazil's authoritarian military dictatorship, SEPULTURA would go on to become Brazilian ambassadors to the metal world, revered master architects of the death/thrash genre, and the most successful heavy metal band from the Federal Republic of Brazil.


    When SEPULTURA experienced a line-up change in the mid-1990s that was widely covered by the metal press around the world, remaining members recruited American Derrick Green in 1997 to front the band, a position the Cleveland, Ohio native has held for the past fifteen years and counting. This past June, long-time guitarist Andreas Kisser (who joined in1987), original bassist Paulo Jr., and drum prodigy Eloy Casagrande, SEPULTURA entered the studio in Venice, California with renowned producer Ross Robinson (KORN, MACHINE HEAD, FEAR FACTORY) - who also worked on the band's landmark 1996 release, »Roots« - and co-producer Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, SYMPHONY X, INCANTATION) - who previously worked on SEPULTURA's »Roorback« (2003), the »Revolusongs« EP (2002), and »Nation« (2001) - to record the band's seventh studio album with Green (and their second album for Nuclear Blast): »The Mediator Between The Head And Hands Must Be The Heart«, scheduled for release this October.


    Inspired by Austrian filmmaker Fritz Lang's classic 1927 movie "Metropolis," SEPULTURA leans heavily on the strength of their thrash metal influences to make a statement against the dehumanizing effects of technology. Guitarist Andreas Kisser delves a little deeper:


    "In the movie, a crazy millionaire wants to transform a robot into a real person. That's kind of the opposite of what we live today. More than ever, we are robotized through the worldwide web, Google glasses, chips under our skins and globalized slavery our society suffers nowadays. Being that the novel was written in the early 1920s, it's almost prophetical. The phrase that inspired me - the main message of the story - points to the heart as being the human factor that keeps a man a man - not a robot. The heart beats with freedom of choice. We have to think for ourselves to create a real world, not a matrix."


    Exploring the miseries and privileges associated with technological power, »The Mediator Between The Head And Hands Must Be The Heart« - SEPULTURA's angry dystopian documentary in sonic form - also addresses the chaotic aftermath of natural disasters, the unfulfilled promises of religion, and the still-widening divide & unbridgeable gap between pampered citizens who live in decadent luxury and the working poor who withstand unbearable living & working conditions to simply survive.


    The album's opening track, 'Trauma Of War', begins as a cacophony of noise that gives rise to an urgent panic that spins into a paranoiac distress about others making decisions that will lead to our demise in war. In 'The Vatican', we listen as yearning souls pray to their god to alleviate their suffering as the furious vocals, guitars, and drums document the moment when the faithful come face-to-face with the reality of their absent god too self-absorbed with being adored to notice humanity's cries for help. 'The Bliss Of Ignorants' is an indictment by those who intimately know the depths of human suffering against those who don't wish to know. 'Grief' weeps with its gnosis of such a feared emotion. With so many recent natural disasters throughout the world, who could deny the truth behind human greed & corruption sung about in 'Manipulation Of Tragedy'?


    With both the 2014 FIFA World Cup championship and the 2016 Olympic Games headed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a worldwide audience will surely be mesmerized by the glamour surrounding these world-broadcasted events. But there are those who bear witness to what won't be televised; there are those who have seen the decades of daily strife of Brazilian citizens with wide-open eyes.

    Robert Walter performs all his own stunts. For 20 years, the San Diego native has been pulling drawbars and pushing the limits of the Hammond B3 organ. As a founding member of the Greyboy Allstars, he helped usher in the funk-jazz renaissance of the early '90s and has continued to keep one hand comping chords in the instrument's funky past, while the other explores ever-new melodic terrain. On June 25, his long-standing project, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, returns with, Get Thy Bearings, via The Royal Potato Family. It was a recent move from New Orleans to Los Angeles that jump-started the 20th Congress who hadn't recorded a studio album in ten years. The nine-track effort presents Walter's organ, piano, Rhodes and synthesizer driving an all-star line-up rounded out by guitarist/bassist Elgin Park, drummer Aaron Redfield, sax players Karl Denson and Cochemea Gastelum, and percussionist Chuck Prada.


    Get Thy Bearings is drenched in the vintage old school soul, funk and jazz vibe of Walter's heroes like Big John Patton, but it also reflects his recent work scoring films. There's a conceptual depth to the songwriting that draws on elements of narrative and character development, lending a cinematic color to the proceedings. The tracks range from the Sly Stone-style soul vamp of Little Business to the heavy gospel of Crux. Dog Party might as well be the theme song to a cartoon of the same name, while Don't Chin the Dog shifts from delicate shuffle to horn-drenched boogaloo. Things get eerie on Up From the Skies, a Jimi Hendrix cover rendered nearly unrecognizable in washes of electric Miles. Similarly, the album's title track is a shrewd reworking of the 1968 Donovan tune Walter first discovered on compilation of sample-friendly breakbeats, full of fuzz guitar and a mercurial organ solo.

    Eric Chenaux has emerged as one of the most distinctive, innovative and original voices in what might be called avant-garde balladry, juxtaposing his gorgeously pure and open singing against a guitar sound and style that truly stands alone. Skullsplitter is the impressive new album that confirms Chenaux's singular aesthetic: genuine, natural, unaffected vocals gliding through slow, smoky melodies while electric and nylon-string guitars are deployed with adventurously experimental, dextrous, semi-improvisational technique and texture. Skullsplitter stands as a welcome and natural evolution from Chenaux's previous song-based album Guitar & Voice (2012), his first properly solo record for Constellation (i.e. made without guest musicians or collaborators), which was widely celebrated as his best work to date, championed by The Wire, Said The Gramophone, Stereophile and others for its unique sensibility and sensitivity. Skullsplitter builds on these strengths and similarly consists solely of Chenaux's voice and guitar.


    When Eric plays guitar, his feet are as busy as his hands (though his hands can keep busy too, as heard on a number of wonderfully fried solos and instrumental excursions on the album); he is continually working his concise array of signal-bending devices - volume, wah and freeze pedals - with a remarkable and idiosyncratic fluidity that's integral to the expressivity he brings to the instrument. His voice is the calm center of this stormy micro-climate of bodily kinetics and woozy playing; indeed, warm weather is a metaphor Chenaux has used to describe his music in the past, and it seems ever more suitable as his sound evolves: his vocals are like a high pressure system, riding on clear bright air, stabilizing the roiling, changeable atmosphere of the guitars underneath. Skullsplitter is the apotheosis of this evolving tension between the two constituent elements of Chenaux's solo songcraft, where the guitar seems constantly in search of disruption or escape from an accompaniment role. Or perhaps more fittingly, it often sounds as if Chenaux's singing voice and the voice of the guitar just happen to be wandering through the same tune, with their own independent ideas of the route they'll be taking. Yet the songs remain surprisingly and almost effortlessly coherent, with a languorous groove; the album unfolds like a weirdly bubbling but warmly welcoming bath. Additional familiarity, for fans of the Chenaux songbook, might come from the (barely recognizable) re-interpretations of two 'old' songs, Have I Lost My Eyes and the album's title track itself.


    Chenaux also has a long history of sonic experimentation through sound-art commissions and collaborations, with analog signal capture through natural oscillation and wave distortion, site-specificity and environmental sound. Working closely with his longtime recording engineer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, Chenaux brings this experience to bear on the production side of Skullsplitter as well, with the use of physically swinging speakers and radical gating and panning to tease out further fluctuations in the barometer of the guitar sound. The result is a gem of an album in Chenaux's increasingly luminous discography.

    My Head Is An Animal

    Of Monsters and Men is an amiable group of day dreamers who craft folkie pop songs. With the Icelandic group's bright, trumpeting single Little Talks winning over one blog at a time, Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir and her bandmates (co-singer/guitarist Ragnar Raggi Þórhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, piano/accordion player Árni Guðjónsson, and bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson) are well on their way to becoming citizens of the world.


    Nanna, who began as the acoustic act Songbird, recruited extra hands to bolster her sound for a solo show. She liked how her vocals commingled with Raggi's, so they started writing songs together and in 2010 morphed into Of Monsters and Men. As victors of 2010's Músiktilraunir, the new group earned a slot on the influential Iceland Airwaves festival later that year, followed by Seattle's radio station KEXP posting Little Talks from a Living Room Session filmed there, setting the telltale ripple effect in motion. By the summer of 2011 Little Talks hit #1 in the band's native country, and people around the world seemed to be listening to us, marvels Raggi. The band was asked to perform again at Iceland Airwaves 2011, where KEXP then anointed the group as easily the most buzzed about band.


    Though their reach is growing broader, the group's appeal has remained distinct. Their music is as fantastical as it is pretty. For inspiration, they often reference random stories they've read. The chanting, tribal Six Weeks was inspired by the true tale of American frontiersman Hugh Glass, seemingly left for dead after a bear attack. As for the swelling, epic From Finner, it's about a whale that has a house on its back says Raggi on which people travel across the ocean, exploring different places and having adventures. Little Talks, explores loneliness and insanity, while Love Love Love ruefully ruminates on heartbreak. If you listen to the lyrics, they're not as uplifting, he says. But our music is meant to be fun to sing along to.


    Their full-length debut, My Head Is an Animal immediately reached #1 in their native Iceland and will now see its worldwide release via Universal Records. The album features production by Of Monsters and Men, Aron Amaarsson and Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids) while Craig Silvey (Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire) handled mixing duties. My Head Is An Animal sounds like a dream and its pure bliss to listen to!

    Shangri-La Dee Da is the fifth studio album by American Hard Rock band Stone Temple Pilots. It was produced by Brendan O'Brien and released in 2001. The album was certified Gold.


    While recording the album, the band also worked on a documentary and coffee table book. Neither was released, however, and limited footage was made available through the band's official website in the form of live performance-based music videos.


    The album's most successful song Days of the Week was only being performed at a handful of dates on the supporting tour for the album. However, the album's second single Hollywood Bitch has become a staple of the band's live set ever since their 2008 reunion. In 2011, the song Black Again was added to STP's setlist, and was performed for the majority of the tour. Bi-Polar Bear was also performed occasionally, after the band reunited in 2008.

    In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown's touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor's Forte label back at full fighting strength. She'd calmed aching crowds the day after MLK's death, and she'd lived the life, despite its rigors-to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including "I've Lived The Life" and "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear," which made national rounds in 1972.


    By then, Forte had already done more than deliver Marvelous Marva to market. Taylor worked overtime at KPRS to bring the world The Rayons, who'd stroll their girl group harmonies past Chicago's RCA studios on "Baby Be Good." In '68, The Four Darlings sauntered in with smoky-voiced soul operatics on the demanding "Give Me Love." Progressing in the middle '70s, Everyday People got "Super Black" on Forte's pine-green label. Still powering forward some 13 years on, Forte redawned with the 1980s, essaying disco funk with Sharon Revoal's "Reaching for Our Star."


    Numero 047 Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label charts Kansas City yeoman's work, the Carpets and the Derbys, dapper clothiers mysteriously murdered, and marriages made and broken. In 28 LP tracks, plus a trove of promo headshots and every-hued label scans
    detailing all iterations of Forte's logo in print, this 16th Eccentric Soul sojourn hands over vivid floor shakers and lost dance craze records alike-though what moves "The Hen" required remains anyone's guess.

    Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight rigid plinths. Clever use of lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin became the foundations of the high level of performance achieved by the now iconic original Planar range.


    The new Planar 3 takes this design philosophy to the next level. A lightweight acrylic laminated plinth strengthened using a new improved double brace system mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) which forms a structurally sound stressed beam assembly. This rigid plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which will add unnatural distortions to the music.


    Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating record. The use of braces instead of the complete skin allows double thickness phenolic resin in these key areas while providing further weight reduction to the plinth which directly addresses the issue of mass absorption and unwanted energy transmission.

    A turntable should be reliable and easy to use, but most importantly it should sound great. High-performance tables can be prohibitively expensive, and budget tables too often sacrifice quality for unnecessary features. So we set out to build a turntable that outperforms its price tag.


    By redesigning classic audiophile components and leaving out nonessentials, we created a remarkably simple table that provides warm and detailed sound. Easy to setup and use, the Orbit delivers a dynamic and distortion-free listening experience.


    A quiet revolution


    The Orbit's low voltage AC synchronous motor provides excellent speed consistency and minimizes pitch variation (wow & flutter). The motor is decoupled from the plinth by a unique rubber suspension that prevents unwanted vibrations from seeping into the sound.


    The Orbit's CNC machined pulley turns an exposed drive belt and plays both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM records. The platter rides on an inverted main bearing - providing superior stability and reduced bearing noise (rumble). In other words, all you hear is the music on your record.


    A perfectly balanced tonearm


    The tonearm is the crucial link between your record and your speakers. To do its job well, it must achieve harmony between tracking force, mass distribution, and rigidity. The Orbit's innovative unipivot arm turns effortlessly on an inverted pyramid of precision ball bearings, and works with the arm's low center of mass to provide accurate tracking.


    Every Orbit comes pre-fitted with an Ortofon OM 5E moving magnet (MM) cartridge, which is balanced by an adjustable stainless steel counterweight.

    The Orbit is ready to play out of the box. Cartridges come pre-installed with tracking force properly adjusted, so all you have to do is turn the table on and lower the arm.     Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.

    The Evolution of Revolution


    Evolution is a well proven and documented process in many areas of our lives. This applies in particular to design engineers and machines. Over the past forty years our cars have become more reliable and economical whilst we take for granted the reliability and speed of modern aircraft. Rega is no exception to evolution. Rega's experience and previous achievements allow us to continually develop and produce better products.


    The RP10 represents probably the biggest step forward in the evolution of Roy Gandy's turntable design philosophies. Low mass, high rigidity plinths combined with electronically controlled low vibration motors, high flywheel effect platters and lower mass higher stability tonearms.


    RP10 Custom power supply


    Housed in Rega's custom design case is a brand new advanced anti vibration and speed control circuit dedicated to running the 24v low noise motor. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (digital signal processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. The device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration and speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune the motor for optimal performance.


    The entire tonearm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints whilst using the stiffest materials in all critical areas. The tolerance of the RB2000 tonearm is so tight that no adhesive is used at any point throughout the construction. A brand new low mass, precision engineered, vertical bearing assembly has been manufactured to further compliment the inherent design philosophy of the RP10 turntable.


    The RB2000 uses the latest award winning Rega arm tube. Each one which is meticulously hand polished (keeping mass to an absolute minimum) and has been completely redesigned to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced design tube increases the stiffness and rigidity of the overall assembly whilst reducing stress on the bearings even further.


    Magnesium and Phenolic - Dual bracing


    A super lightweight plinth combined with a double brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add un-natural distortions to the music. The RP10 takes our double brace technology to the next level. Not content with an unprecedented stiffness to mass ratio, Rega have obsessively reduced any resonant properties by using two different materials for the new stressed beam. The top layer is magnesium and the bottom layer is pheno-lic (two of the lightest and stiffest materials available). Incorporating two different materials into the brace structure lowers their ability to pick up unwanted airborne vibrations. Simply put, different materials have different natural resonances. By using two different materials together they decrease the natural frequency of each other by self damping.


    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter


    The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.


    24V Low noise motor


    The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.

    Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.


    The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.


    De-coupled outer frame and dust cover


    A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.


    Turntable design & mythology


    Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.


    Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.


    For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.


    Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

Inspired by our life giving planetary body, SOL is a masterful meditation on human emotional plane as effected by planetary bodies. Angelides has delivered perhaps his strongest musical statement yet. He explains: "My urge was to create an album who's main characters were the Sun, Moon and Earth and how they all play a roll in the perfect simple life of a perfectly imperfect human. Each track within their peak's and valley's plays a specific role in the narrative. My last album was more monotone, sound design focused and emotionally protected. I strove for more on this one. Written, produced and recorded over the course of a year on the Eastside of Los Angeles in his home studio, SOL's epic grandeur bears the traces of Angelides's recent work composing orchestral pieces for live performance with the LA based Echo Society. It weaves in the dulcet tones of a live string ensemble into the many textured layers of some compositions, as well as field recordings from locations across the US: LA, Redwood groves in Northern California, Yosemite and perhaps most memorably, in Costa Rica during a 7 day medicinal retreat. That pivotal retreat as well as a trip to the pyramids and temples of Cairo Egypt, a 10 day silent meditation retreat in the desert of Joshua Tree and a handful of Native American ceremonies shaped the celestial-meets-earth tone of the work. The intimacy and heartfelt qualities of SOL immediately call to mind contemporaries such as Jon Hopkins, Apparat and Matthew Dear as well as the historic likes of early Peter Gabriel, Arthur Russell and Fred Frith amongst others. From the moody cinematic opening of 'SpVce' and exhalting synth melodies of 'Combustion', to the touching delicacy of the watery ballad 'Blue And Grey' to 'Mind Of War''s tromping existential digi-funk, the heartbreaking piano paen of 'Tamara', to the snarling drone saturation of the title track, to the beaming, epic euphoria of 'The Sun Is A Drum' it's clear that this is a record that is a truly cinematic experience.

    Mike Simonetti has decided to split from Italians Do It Better (Chromatics, Glass Candy) to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he believes in. The first release on 2MR will be The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue. During the writing process of Capricorn Rising, Simonetti was asked to remix tracks from the West Coast twosome Silver Hands. Immediately taken by the incredible range of lead-vocalist Elizabeth Wight, he reached out to collaborate. The result of the bi-coastal email exchange would eventually become Pale Blue. Pale Blue, referencing the term "Pale Blue Dot" , coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti's severance from Italians. Thus, many of the tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past encompasses a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions, while also incorporating Simonetti's varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop. Above it all though, Wight's vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth that's so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits. While Simonetti, Wight and Jana Hunter (vocals on "Dusk in Parts") remain at its core, Pale Blue's philosophy is to keep everything open to collaboration. It does not aim to pigeonhole itself into a genre or any new vistas in music, but instead to a unifying sound produced collectively and harmoniously.

    Leadbelly's last recording sessions for a commercial record label, held in the early fall of 1944, yielded a dazzling 12 songs, embracing virtuoso guitar blues (Grasshoppers In My Pillow), pounding piano-driven scatting (The Eagle Rocks, with Leadbelly himself at the ivories, a talent for which he wasn't usually recognized), and familiar standards done in some startlingly different ways, including Goodnight, Irene, Rock Island Line, and Ella Speed, done with the understated accompaniment of a zither (courtesy of Paul Mason Howard) as well as his own guitar. Leadbelly was in excellent voice and top form on guitar and piano - having gone to California to test the commercial waters, he met Tex Ritter, an old friend, who arranged for Leadbelly to come to his house and, with Merle Travis playing as well and Capitol executive Lee Gillette present, auditioned then and there for the label; he was energized by the experience, and Capitol's recording caught the brightest as well as the deepest tones in his playing, thus making this record one of the very best showcases for acoustic 12-string guitar of the period. Sadly, only a handful of these tracks were issued during the man's own lifetime, thus convincing him that they were another career dead end - in 1956 (and again in 1962) they emerged with an impassioned annotation by Dave Dexter Jr., imploring people to buy these last commercial sides by one of the most celebrated bluesmen of the century.



    Production notes: Whilst this album has been mastered and produced to the highest possible standards it is NOT upto what would be considered audiophile standards. This would be impossible bearing in mind the standards of recording and mastering at the time.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    With Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara introduce a new kind of sound to their usual indie repertoire. "No one will confuse this with any of our other records," Sara says. "It's got a bigger, bolder, happier sound." Tegan is explicit about the supersized ambitions motivating the record. "I kept asking myself: Can I hear this in an arena? Can I hear this on a teenager's iPod as they're riding the bus to school?"


    The new album doesn't just sound different, it represents a more collaborative way of making music. For the first time, the sisters actually wrote a lot of the songs together (in the past there were Tegan songs and Sara songs), and they surrendered more control than usual in the studio, dividing songs between 3 producers (Greg Kurstin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and Mike Elizondo) and a handful of outside musicians to capture the sound they were looking for. Tegan and Sara are both effusive about Kurstin's role in the process.


    "We intentionally went looking for a producer who wouldn't dwell on protecting the signature Tegan and Sara sound," Tegan explains. Sara sums up Kurstin's role with a surprising metaphor: "Greg took everything we do and put it on steroids."


    For all the superficial differences, though, Heartthrob bears the true hallmarks of a Tegan and Sara record. The songs are terrific, full of lust and longing and regret, bouncing between the familiar poles of erotic rapture ("Closer") and post-breakup despondency ("How Come You Don't Want Me"). But the lyrics seem less confessional than usual, a little more universal and philosophical, as if Tegan and Sara are reflecting on the experience of passion rather than undergoing its ecstasies and torments in real time. For every urgent outburst-"Does your body shake when you get around me? Does your body ache when you think about me?" ("I Couldn't Be Your Friend")-there's a moment of calm reflection, a retrospective clarity about past relationships: "When I think of you I think of your skin golden brown from the sun/Your arms outstretched your hair cut shorter than it'd been/But still blowing in the wind" ("Drove Me Wild"). There's a hard-won maturity in these lyrics, hidden beneath the glossy surface of the music, and a willingness to tackle subjects beyond the confines of romance. This is especially evident in the striking song, "I'm Not Your Hero," which examines the difficulty of maintaining artistic independence and personal autonomy in a politicized world: "I'm not their hero but that doesn't mean I wasn't brave/I never walked the party line doesn't mean that I was never afraid."


    Heartthrob gives us Tegan and Sara in their superhero tights and capes, ready to conquer the pop universe, and the new outfits suit them just as well as their old-school jeans and T-shirts. Don't be surprised if you hear these songs in an arena, or blasting on a car radio, or leaking from a teenager's earbuds on a bus. That's what they're made for. And don't worry if you experience a brief sense of disorientation the first couple of times you hear them, a momentary inability to put a name to those familiar voices. By the time you realize who you're listening to, you'll already be singing along.

    It's been almost three years since DIANA released their critically-acclaimed LP, Perpetual Surrender. Now, the wait for new material has come to an end with the upcoming release of their second album Familiar Touch. The band have also shared the album's opening track, 'Confession' - a sharply focused example of their statement of intent, and which follows on from the previously shared 'Slipping Away'.


    Having initially conceived Perpetual Surrender as a one-off recording project, Kieran Adams (drums, drum machines, synths), Carmen Elle (guitars, vocals) and Destroyer touring band member Joseph Shabason (synths, samplers, saxophone) regrouped after a period of time that Elle describes as "learning how to be a band." Bigger, fuller and far more open and expansive, Familiar Touch takes all of Perpetual Surrender's gorgeous qualities and pushes the songs to the forefront, upping DIANA's game tremendously.


    'Miharu' is the perfect example of this: recalling the best mid-80's alt-pop, it mixes the lush soul signature of Flyte Time Productions (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis) while delivering a massive pop chorus that liquefies into their modern production nous. "I really love the silky rub between Carmen's demure approach and Gary's [Beals, additional vocals] vibrant punctuations," Adams explains, his description also perfectly encapsulating 'Moment of Silence' - another sophisticated pop track with what Adams describes as having "a very smooth top layer" and synths that give the impression of "stretching time - being stretched thin in those moments." 'Confession' also builds upon those Jam & Lewis rhythms, with Adams describing it as sounding like the pair "if they worked with Annie Lennox."


    Where Perpetual Surrender was the unexpected success of a group of friends experimenting with different sounds, Familiar Touch is the sound of them taking those experiences and maximising themselves as a proper band. "There was a much different studio flow - we started working on things close to a year before we recorded them," says Adams. "Last time, we were obscuring what it was that we were doing - with washed out or distorted vocals, for example. With this album - particularly with the vocals - we conceptualised everything a lot more in advance and really committed to certain sounds and feelings. We tried to fight the instinct of trying to distort it."


    One thing that's clear this time around is how much more confidence DIANA have in themselves as musicians. The trio decamped to Adams' then-apartment, where the pressures of a second album and the time constraints of a regular studio were relieved. Renting their own gear, they made makeshift vocal booths of out of clothes cupboards and Star Wars sleeping bags (or "weird, fucked up musty vocal caves" as Shabason describes them). Upon listening to the record, it's hard to believe Familiar Touch was made in such a compact environment. With its emboldened production, it sits pleasingly alongside their personal influences and seminal recordings such as Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen or Yellow Magic Orchestra's Naughty Boys.


    Mixed by Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Beach House, Grizzly Bear) and mastered by Heba Kadry, Familiar Touch is also lent a skilled hand by Thom Gill (guitars, keys, piano), Bram Gielen (bass), Vince Spilchuk (trumpet), and vocalists Robin Dann, Alanna Stuart of Bonjay and aforementioned Gary Beals - runner-up on the first season of Canadian Idol. By having the space and time to work with their new ideas on their own terms, this time around, DIANA have crafted an album that sounds unabashedly vibrant and distinctly 2016.
