    If You're Feeling Sinister

Whimsy and preciousness is an integral part of 'If You're Feeling Sinister', along with clever wit and gentle, intricate arrangements - a wonderful blend of the Smiths and Simon & Garfunkel, to be reductive.

    Tigermilk

Tigermilk is simply gorgeous, an unaffected debut equal to the Smiths' finest work, and seemed to arrive fully formed out of nowhere in May 1996. In songs like the pastoral, shimmering The State I Am In and the wonderfully naive We Rule the School, bandleader Stuart Murdoch had already laid the seeds that would later come to such full, poignant fruition on If You're Feeling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap. The 10 songs here have such a natural pop sensibility, such a grace and resonance, it's hard now to believe that Tigermilk was only originally intended as a small-time project between seven Glaswegian friends (the original vinyl release was limited to 1,000 copies). Whimsical, surreal, and beautiful, this reissue is well worth the wait. --Everett True

    The Life Pursuit

Back In Print For The First Time In Years

Oh to be free and frivolous, like Stuart Murdoch and his extensive cast of players as they engage The Life Pursuit. There's no Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It or Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying on this disc. Life has gotten easier, it seems, since Belle and Sebastian's early days. To boot, since 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, the Belle cast has indulged a more 70s-era set of influences: Isn't that Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky beat on the funny White Collar Boy, a near sequel to Step Into My Office, Baby? And how about the T-Rex touch on the opening of The Blues Are Still Blue? No worries, Belle and Sebastian retain their gleam flawlessly. A jaunty lift is still in their step, a carefree abandon that charms even as it also reaches to the 70s for the funk-meets-psychedelia, Song for Sunshine. It's bright and breezy throughout (the titles tell some of the story: Another Sunny Day and Funny Little Frog), with memorably decorous, familiar bouncing rhythms marking much of the album. The downtone Dress Up in You and Mornington Crescent are spare and lovely, wide-open in their pacing. All the same, For the Price of a Cup of Tea, almost triggers a sing-along with just its name. --Andrew Bartlett

How To Solve Our Human Problems (Part 1) (Pre-Order)

A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president's ambassador, not the current one's).

Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/vocals) brought in the delicious 'The Same Star', which marries Belle and Sebastian's melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). "We'd met Leo in February of 2016, and I'd say that meeting and the recording of 'I'll Be Your Pilot' were the first tangible steps of this EP project," Martin says. "We didn't have a stack of songs to play him, but we liked him and he became a part of the plan from that point - and when I'd got to a point with 'The Same Star' where it just needed to be recorded, I thought it could benefit from having a producer to steer things, and fortunately we had a slot in the diary marked 'Leo' coming up. It's not a song we'd laboured over playing for months - it fell together quite quickly thanks in large part to Bob's [Bobby Kildea, guitarist] enthusiasm and Stuart's willingness to dismember an old song and repurpose the break, so that it wasn't just the same three chords over and over and over."

There's one big reason why 15 songs are coming out on three EPs, rather than one album. "We'd made a couple of LPs, Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister, within the space of six months," Murdoch says, remembering the early days of the band's career, and how that fed into their decision-making this time.

Push Barman To Open Old Wounds

Back In Print For The First Time In Years

In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the greatest hits you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it's difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. The State I Am In has never sounded better, while Lazy Line Painter Jane, which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band's best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise is brutal and elegant. -Mike McGonigal

    Underachievers Please Try Harder

Camera Obscura create lilting, sophisticated melodies that draw similarities to Belle & Sebastian, The Clientele, or Trembling Blue Stars, but are also rooted in more classic sounds such as Nick Drake, Donovan, or Petula Clark. Songs drift and linger like clouds in a summer sky, with gentle hooks and breezy vocals. This is their 2004 release, lovingly remastered and presented on HQ 180g vinyl with a coupon for MP3 download of the entire album, and two bonus tracks from Merge's CD version of this classic.

    Featuring Norah Jones

Norah Jones has a lot of friends. So many that she's been able to put together a compelling collection of her collaborations during the past decade with no less than 18 other artists. Among those invited to her party: Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ryan Adams, Outkast, and Foo Fighters. How cool is that?

Encompassing rock, country, pop, jazz, and more, the tracks span back to Jones' earliest recordings (a version of Roxy Music's More Than This with guitarist Charlie Hunter in 2001) and fast forward to her most recent performances, as Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John was recently cut with twee-pop darlings Belle and Sebastian. Featuring Norah Jones also includes recordings by some of Jones' own bands and side projects like The Little Willies and El Madmo, as well as performances with artists that she's toured with, including M. Ward, Sasha Dobson and Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings.

It's so exciting and flattering and fun when I get asked to sing with somebody that I admire, explains Jones. It takes you a little bit out of your comfort zone when you're doing something with another artist. You don't know what to expect-it's kind of like being a little kid and having a playdate.

"'Adult Diversion' is a whimsical dream jam and brings "feel-good" to

"...somewhere between the sun-drenched shores of California and

Alvvays are two women, three men, a crate of C-86 tapes and a
love of jingle-jangle. Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan grew up
as next-door neighbours in Cape Breton, lifting fiddles and folk-songs. Heartbreaks of different shades soon entered their lives, as
did the music of Teenage Fanclub and Belle & Sebastian. Similar
noisy melancholy drifted over to Prince Edward Island, finding
Alec O'Hanley, Brian Murphy and Philip MacIsaac.

Convening in Toronto, the group have been making music since
since dusk or maybe dawn, when stars were appearing or fading
off. As a result, their debut self-titled album is both sun-splashed
and twilit -- nine songs concealing drunkenness, defeat and death
in tungsten-tinted pop that glitters like sea glass.

With needlepoint melody and verse, Rankin and O'Hanley's songs
were recorded at Chad VanGaalen's Yoko Eno studio and mixed
by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and John Agnello (Sonic Youth,
Dinosaur Jr., kurt Vile). The resultant album is loud and clear and
    sure. Flood your ears.

The Boy With The Arab Strap

This highly anticipated album from Belle and Sebastian arrives with every hope satisfied. Each song is a cunning short story that wraps itself around you like a cozy couch throw. The loose theme running through this 12-song reverie is seduction. It plays out in both the drowsy sexual hopes of principal songwriter Stuart Murdoch's idle protagonists and the giddiness of bandmate Stevie Jackson's Seymour Stein and Chickfactor, which document his bewitchment by the city of New York and its beautiful girls and florid pitchmen. The complex arrangements favor a whimsical diversity best experienced in Sleep the Clock Around, which features synthesizer bloops, trumpets, and bagpipes! If you haven't figured out that this Scottish eight-piece deserves every iota of hype it's receiving, it's time to have your ears checked and your record collection gone over by a certified professional. --Lois Maffeo

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance is the longawaited

Produced and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta
by Ben H. Allen III, best known for his work with
Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Raury,
among others, the band - who have been
listening to things like vintage Detroit techno
and Giorgio Moroder - have brought a danceparty
element into their gorgeous tales of
sensitive souls navigating a world gone awry. It
is perhaps the most inspired and wide-reaching
album Belle and Sebastian have ever made.

Given that band leader Stuart Murdoch has
    openly declared himself pro-bubblegum before,
it shouldn't come as a surprise that 'Enter Sylvia
Plath', 'The Book Of You' and 'Play For Today' have
keyboard hooks that recall Scandinavian pop
machines past and present. The filmic loves,
kitchen sink imagery and baroque touches are
still there, too, don't worry. It's all about trusting
in the restorative power of pop music. If you'd
trust anyone to write a great Europop song
about Sylvia Plath, you'd trust Belle & Sebastian.

After two albums of tastefully orchestrated folk-pop, albeit some of the least demonstrative and most affecting around, Drake chose a radical change for what turned out to be his final album. Not even half-an-hour long, with 11 short songs and no more -- he famously remarked at the time that he simply had no more to record -- Pink Moon more than anything else is the record that made Drake the cult figure he remains. Specifically, Pink Moon is the bleakest of them all; that the likes of Belle and Sebastian are fans of Drake may be clear enough, but it's doubtful they could ever achieve the calm, focused anguish of this album, as harrowing as it is attractive. No side musicians or outside performers help this time around -- it's simply Drake and Drake alone on vocals, acoustic guitar, and a bit of piano, recorded by regular producer Joe Boyd but otherwise untouched by anyone else.

    The Third Eye Centre

Dear Catastrophe Waitress ushered in a new chapter for Belle and Sebastian. Once a hushed bedroom indie project, the band reemerged as a pop powerhouse. Subsequent albums, The Life Pursuit and Write About Love marked a newfound confidence in the Scottish collective, and with it, some of their best record and ticket sales to date, elevating Belle & Sebastian from cherished undergroundlings into masters of modern songcraft. Third Eye Centre, like its predecessor Push Barman To Open Old Wounds, collects fan-favorite b-sides from cherished albums and also serves as a documentary of a decade.

Fold Your Hands Child You Walk Like a Peasant

Belle & Sebastian's songs have always been instantly familiar while simultaneously original and unexpected. Listening to Belle & Sebastian, you have the inexplicable feeling that you have heard these songs somewhere before, filed away with the mothballs of your youth, or that, maybe, you have stumbled upon long-lost tapes of a young Nick Drake being backed by Village Green Preservation Society-era Kinks under the production of some low-rent Phil Spector. The fact that Belle & Sebastian have arrived at their distinct, anachronistic sound quite naturally and by accident is a large part of their charm. It's not surprising, then, that Belle & Sebastian's fourth full-length record, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, has arrived with the band's sincerity intact. What is surprising, however, is the record itself: an eclectic mix of the soulful and the sublime, something of a departure for the band. Unlike their last record, the amazing Boy with the Arab Strap, the songs here are not instantly recognizable, but more subtle. The hooks don't automatically grab; instead, the songs' intent is to break you down, seeping into your bloodstream and working on you from the inside out like an infection.

The eclectic feel of the record owes itself to the fact that this is, by far, Belle & Sebastian's most record by committee affair yet, with songwriting contributions from several different band members and songs that seem to have been built up from simple ideas into lush orchestral pieces with the musical input of the band's many different instrumentalists. While Stuart Murdoch still writes and sings the bulk of the material, he collaborates with bandmates on a number of songs, including the delicately soulful Don't Leave the Light on Baby, written with keyboardist Chris Geddes. Unfortunately, songs by Belle & Sebastian cofounder and bassist Stuart David are not to be found on Fold Your Hands (he left the band during the recording). However, violinist Sarah Martin contributes her first song with the haunting Waiting for the Moon to Rise, while cellist Isobel Campbell adds the record's most surprising track, Beyond the Sunrise, sounding like a lost Leonard Cohen gem with its spare and fragile arrangement. Guitarist Stevie Jackson, who contributed some of the better songs on Arab Strap, manages only one on this outing, but it's one of the best: The Wrong Girl, a tale of misplaced love juxtaposed against swinging Spector- like strings and horns. By the time the band reaches Women's Realm, an infectious, life-affirming romp, the record's message, although never spelled out, is clear: Through all the melancholy and solitude and terrible things that could go wrong, life is still worth fighting for. --Paul Ducey

    Write About Love

Back after a 5-year hiatus doing solo projects, soundtracks and more, Glasgow's beloved BELLEANDSEBASTIAN have returned with one of their finest albums. Marrying the intimacy of early works like Sinister and Tigermilk with the production values of their more recent work, Write About Love is a varied, captivating and occasionally disturbing trawl through the mind of Stuart Murdoch and his colleagues. The album features duets with Norah Jones and actress Carey Mulligan (An Education).

When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog

Call it a curse: Jens Lekman's world is populated by an endless stream of women. There he is, his hair mussed and glasses off-kilter, sitting in the corner of the cafe with his journal once again - and he's being torn in two. Moments ago he fell in love with the redheaded barista who nailed his order - when she scooted that cappuccino across the counter, it was clear that there was a connection. And now, his eye catches the picture of divinity in the shape of the most finely featured brunette he's ever seen...and she's looking his way. But which way to go? It's tragic having to make such choices. Like Fellini's The Man Who Loved Women, Jens Lekman is a man forever at a crossroads between competing inspirations.

At only 23, Lekman has deservedly been the center of much hype in Scandinavia. Having made a name for himself performing under the name Rocky Dennis, he recently hit #2 on the Swedish National Pop Charts. Most everyone who's heard him believes him to be the next great pop star emerging from the streets of the DIY underground. With an angelic voice and golden ears he seems to be drinking from the same hard waters as The Carpenters, Harry Nilsson, The Magnetic Fields, Runt-era Todd Rundgren, Bill Callahan's Smog, The Modern Lovers, Rufus Wainwright and Belle & Sebastian.

(I Can't Get No) Stevie Jackson

Despite having been responsible for some of Belle and Sebastian's best known songs (Jonathan David, Chickfactor, Seymour Stein and I'm Not Living In the Real World), it has taken Stevie Jackson sixteen years for his first collection of solo recordings.

Recorded over the last three years in Glasgow and Vancouver, (I Can't Get No) features a range of friends and musical collaborators including members of Belle and Sebastian, The Pastels, Trembling Bells and the songwriting triumvirate, The Company (Jackson, Roy Moller and Gary Thom), and the New Pornographers' rhythm section of Kurt Dahle and John Collins.

Deluxe edition LP is pressed on heavyweight vinyl and is housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code. Released on Belle & Sebastian's Banchory record label.

How To Solve Our Human Problems (Part 3) (Pre-Order)

    Dye It Blonde

Smith Westerns consists of Cullen Omori (vocals), Max Kakacek (guitar) and Cameron Omori (bass). All members range from ages 19 to 20. Since forming in 2007, Smith Westerns have managed to tour both the U.S. and Europe while supporting the likes of MGMT, Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastian, Girls and Passion Pit. Their self recorded 'lo-fi' self-titled debut was released in 2009 to critical acclaim for their youthful and glam rock tinged approach to pop music.

In 2010, Smith Westerns teamed up with Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TVOTR, Beach House) and current record label Fat Possum to record their sophomore effort in a proper studio. The result is a cleaner/higher quality recording of lush, layered timeless pop songs with emphasis on the guitar virtuosity of Led Zeppelin and the arena rock anthem's of Oasis.

    29 Demos

Double LP Pressed On Red & Blue Vinyl!

Margo Guryan's honeyed voice and gorgeously sweet songwriting has become a favorite of the soft-pop set. As a successful songwriter, her compositions have been recorded by the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Spanky & Our Gang, Astrud Gilberto, Claudine Longet, Oliver, Cass Elliot, Glen Campbell, Saint Etienne and Harry Belafonte. Her only solo album, the magnificent Take A Picture (featuring the hit "Sunday Morning), has become a cult classic since its release in 1968, and no wonder: its combination of marvelously funky sunshine arrangements and Margo's delicious melodies are a heady combo. She's influenced everyone from the Wondermints to Belle and Sebastian to Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (who listened to Take A Picture while writing Juno).

In 2001, Margo released 25 Demos, a collection of fully-fleshed out demos from her personal collection. Most people's demos are mere sketches -- Margo's are little baroque masterpieces, featuring string arrangements, circus organ, chamber-pop rhythm sections and tons of glorious echo. Now, Modern Harmonic presents the biggest collection yet, 29 Demos, all lovingly wrapped in a gorgeous gatefold jacket loaded with liner notes. Finally, an album worthy to follow Take A Picture - two LP's worth of magnificent soft-pop.

    Dust

Screaming Trees is considered to be one of the Godfathers of Grunge. Although they were one of the best 'Seattle-bands' of the early nineties, they never achieved the commercial success of bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

Founded in 1985, the band had to wait till 1992 for their biggest commercial success, the release of 'Sweet Oblivion'. 'Dust' is their seventh and final album originally released in 1996. In contrast to the group's previous recordings that were more influenced by psychedelic rock and punk, 'Dust' is equally influenced by folk and blues, while still retaining a harder-edged sound. After this album The Screaming Trees disbanded.

Lead singer Mark Lanegan started a very successful solo career, working with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Greg Dulli (Afghan Wigs), Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian) and UNKLE.
