Pablo Honey in no way was adequate preparation for its epic, sprawling follow-up, The Bends. Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best moments of Pablo Honey, Radiohead create a grand and forceful sound that nevertheless resonates with anguish and despair -- it's cerebral anthemic rock. Occasionally, the album displays its influences, whether it's U2, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., or the Pixies, but Radiohead turn clichÉs inside out, making each song sound bracingly fresh. Thom Yorke's tortured lyrics give the album a melancholy undercurrent, as does the surging, textured music. But what makes The Bends so remarkable is that it marries such ambitious, and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. It makes the record compelling upon first listen, but it reveals new details with each listen, and soon it becomes apparent that with The Bends, Radiohead have reinvented anthemic rock.

Hard DrugsHard Drugs is an indie rock opera that tells a twisted love story by putting emphasis on the songs themselves rather than an elaborate stage production. The final product is a 13-song double LP showcasing an orchestral mix of roots, rock, punk, savvy percussion and heartbreaking harmonies conceived by Jeffry Lee and executed with help from a cache of his talented friends. Collaborators include members of Blood Meridian, Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Pink Mountaintops, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Limb Lifter, Bughouse, Bend Sinister, Fan Death, The Mohawk Lodge and Bison, among many others.$24.99Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed Buy Now

Apache (Bend In Cover) (Discontinued)After ouring throughout Europe, landing viral videos with The Creators Project, remixes driving clubs wild around the globe, and collaborating with John Stanier (Battles), The National and more - Rone's musical universe expanded to include live shows and beyond in 2013. Culminating in a sold out hometown show at Paris' huge, prestigious Olympia concert venue, 2014 is a new day for Rone. On April 8th,Castex will be celebrating the release of his new single on his first proper American tour, including a concert at the legendary Coachella festival. Apache contains three brand new tracks, A-side, "Bachi-Bouzouk" asserts itself as a weapon for the dancefloor - a few crystalline notes before a sleazy acid loop drags the listener through its infinite variations. A deliciously cerebral ballad "Apache" provides a signature Rone break from the disco. On the B-side the celestial introduction of "Origin" soon transforms into an infernal torrent of noise and abstract tones.1. Bachi-Bouzouk

Big Audio Dynamite begat Dreadzone and so it began with Greg Dread and Leo Williams (B.A.D.'s rhythm section) along with Tim Bran forming the band in 1992.
They were baptised as 'Dreadzone;' the cultural gatekeepers of the bass line.
Respecting the past and embracing the future these brothers were dealing with the right now, creating the perfect blend somewhere between the technological and the organic.
It's a sound that leaves room for the listener to put themselves in the mix and dance like nobody's watching

Nuclear Soul"...Lionize might just be one of today's most successfully original rock acts." - Classic Rock
"A mighty funk n roll rumble." - Metal Hammer
"Tight beats and infectious riffs." - Powerplay
Over six albums Lionize have streamlined their blend of funky riffs, cyborg tales and reggae sensibilities into an original, more-ish rock whole; culminating with the propulsive Jetpack Soundtrack in 2014. Now, with seventh LP Nuclear Soul, they're raising the bar again with their most fearless, expansive-sounding songs yet. Assinger/guitarist Nate Bergman tells us: "It [the music] has elements of bands like Clutch and Deep Purple, but its not quite that - it's something all its own. I think the beauty of the band right now is that all these elements touch on something familiar, but also sound new."
In writing and road testing Nuclear Soul the band aimed to redefine what it means to be a classic sounding rock'n'roll band. Thematically, they also harnessed the present political climate to powerful effect.
"We had no rules or ideals," he continues. "We just wanted to take people on a musical journey that excited them, and showed how emotionally moving the band could be."
Ultimately this is Lionize at their most stadium-ready - without compromising on soul, sass or substance. It's that wonderful space where vintage style and contemporary fire collide.1. Darkest Timeline

Between The Needles And NightfallBetween The Needles And Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bend toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.
For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang, Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Illa Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.1. Greenpoint

Barton HollowBarton Hollow is the 2011 debut full-length from The Civil Wars, a duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. The bare-bones arrangements that fans hear on the road are fleshed out with just the barest of acoustic accoutrements herein and each song is an intimate conversation that is as gorgeous as it is haunting.
Not only does Barton Hollow combine blues, folk, Americana, country and classic singer/songwriter material, the Charlie Peacock produced release boasts brilliantly universal narratives that are both elliptical and emotional. It all culminates in the critically acclaimed breakout single Poison & Wine and the band was awarded handsomely at the 2012 Grammy's for 'Best Country Duo/Group Performance' and 'Best Folk Album.'
I do naturally bend pop, says Williams, who adds that she grew up on Billie Holliday and The Beach Boys. White, meanwhile, was raised on Kristofferson, Cash, and Townes Van Zandt by his retro-country-favoring dad. Somehow we're pulling from each other what we crave and what our strengths are, he says.LP

Something About Airplanes
Newly Reissued 180 Gram Version
The fact that Elsinor and Barsuk, two relatively small labels, conspired to co-release Something About Airplanes should give some indication as to its quality. It's a solid, emotive, and frequently amazing indie rock record that foreshadows Death Cab for Cutie's eventual ascent into the mainstream. Sonically, the band falls somewhere on the dreamier and more pop-oriented end of Built to Spill's sound (particularly on Keep It Like a Secret), alongside the Posies' most pensive tracks, or with Delta Haymax -- that is, dynamic, melodic, and somewhat atmospheric Northwestern rock. What's important, however, is that the composition, arrangement, and perfect vocal harmonies of Something About Airplanes are all hugely effective; the band uses light touches of flute, synth, or cello to add the necessary textures to its well-crafted pop songs, and the result has a consistently impressive and thoroughly engaging quality that rivals Built to Spill's Keep It Like a Secret. Which is quite a complement -- but tracks like Bend to Squares and Pictures in an Exhibition deserve as much adulation as one can offer.

MY WOMANAnyone reckless enough to have typecast Angel Olsen according to 2013's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is in for a rethink with her third album, MY WOMAN. The crunchier, blown-out production of the former is gone, but that fire is burning wilder. Her disarming, timeless voice is even more front-and-center. Yet, the strange, raw power and slowly unspooling incantations of her previous efforts remain.
Over two previous albums, she gave us reverb-shrouded poetic swoons, shadowy folk, grunge-pop band workouts and haunting, finger-picked epics. MY WOMAN is an exhilarating complement to her past work, and one for which Olsen recalibrated her writing/recording approach and methods to enter a new music-making phase.
As the record evolves, one gets the sense that the my woman of the title is Olsen herself, absolutely in command but also willing to bend with the influence of collaborators and circumstances. An intuitively smart, warmly communicative and fearlessly generous record, MY WOMAN speaks to everyone. That it might confound expectation is just another of its strengths.1. Intern

Amplifying HostAmplifying Host finds Richard Youngs wandering the guitar desert somewhere between Ry Cooders Paris, Texas score and Neil Youngs work on Dead Man. Yet, the randomly determined chord movements and Youngs stretched-out vocal passes across the record are, perhaps, more akin to Jandeks Six And Six, here, removed from its gauze and dipped in a dark gold. When Youngs bends strings in this anglo-americana vision, its like hes bending spoons.
For more than 20 years, the UKs Richard Youngs has been at the forefront of progressive minimalism, through solo home recording projects and collaborations with the likes of Simon Wickham-Smith and Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple). Leaving a very human fingerprint on even the most far-reaching experimentations, Youngs has built an extensive, intriguing catalog that just begs one to go deep.
Youngs is joined on Amplifying Host by Damon Krukowski (Galaxie 500, Damon and Naomi), whose subtle, free-form drums sizzle and scatter around Youngs lunar dust bowl compositions.1. Furrows Again

Robert Pete Williams with Big Joe Williams (Pure Pleasure)REAL blues ... He took the pain in his soul and the dirt on his hands and made songs out of them ... Robert Pete Williams ... the most avant-garde blues performer ever recorded. No punk rock band has ever matched the jagged, acerbic fury of the riffs Williams played 35 years ago. No rapper has approached his ability to evoke the torment of life in prison or bend language to cast an eerie spell over a chance encounter with a seductive woman. His blues was extremely original, sometimes even hard to understand. No other performer has captured the emotional effect of a desperate situation like he did. He had never been recorded when he was discovered in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana, convicted of murder.
Robert Pete probably has the most unique blues style of all bluesmen. Neither his guitar work nor his singing can be categorized into any established regional style such as East Coast, Mississippi Delta or Texas Blues. His music and lyrics are spontaneous and original. No major influence of other bluesmen can be found in his idiosyncratic, intensely personal performances. Blues scholar Pete Welding described his music as tough, mean, and, above all, impassioned like the man himself.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Doctor Blues

I'll Play The Blues For YouThe regal twang and moan of Albert Kings guitar has long been one of the most riveting sounds in urban blues.
If King hadnt developed his way of bending notes into uncannily human cries, shouts and whispers, modern blues guitar would be a different phenomenon. King played his right-handed guitar upside down and backward, using his left hand. But there was nothing backward about the music he made. Literally pulling emotion from the strings, he created resonance and a sustained wail that distinguished him from all other blues guitarists.
In Ill Play The Blues For You, one of the prime albums of Kings Stax period, we hear a thrilling live performance of his classic Ill Be Doggone and a hair-raising Dont Burn Down The Bridge. The Story Of Light'The Story of Light', a new solo album of original material by virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. Its sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist's acclaimed 2005 album 'Real Illusions: Reflections'.
Throughout, three-time Grammy winner Vai's lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners' minds in equal measure. 'The Story of Light' follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.
'I m always pursuing knowledge. I'm a seeker of spiritual equilibrium and music is a big part of that,' says Vai. 'I've been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.'LP1
