    Nobody says goodbye like Frank Sinatra. For his final album with Capitol, Ol' Blue Eyes elected to croon an unforgettable selection of farewell songs marked with longing, sadness, and poignancy. To make the occasion even more special, he teamed with arranger Axel Stordahl, the virtuoso that helped launch Sinatra's star at Columbia during the 1940s. The results amount to one of the finest send-off statements in history.


    Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180 gram stereo LP presents the songs as they should be experienced: In rich, lush, front-to-back sound in which the strings soar and literally inhale and exhale. Sinatra's singing, as good as it's ever been during his career, comes across with unfettered transparency and tonal purity. Such is the fidelity, the music turns into aural poetry, rendering completely fluid and tube-amp warm the rushes of strings, words, and structures.


    Sinatra fans continually debate which of the artist's albums rank as his best, but there's no doubting the status attached to Point of No Return. Unquestionably the most overlooked effort in the Chairman's Capitol catalog, it defies common expectation that it was made haphazardly to simply fulfill a contractual obligation. Sinatra's presence alone guarantees that isn't the case, yet Stordahl's involvement ensures this 1961 set is something very special indeed.


    The chemistry between the old collaborators is immediately evident. Sinatra inhabits every phrase, feeling, and expression conveyed on the dozen standards, achieving an intimate connection with Stordahl's instrumental accents. Akin to the downbeat moods he casts on the immortal In the Wee Small Hours and Only the Lonely, the vocalist keeps calm and cool, yearning and reflecting as if he's strolling a barren downtown after midnight, a man left alone with his thoughts and memories. Somber, wistful, meditative, teary-eyed sentimental-Sinatra paints each song with the emotions they need, nothing more and nothing less.

    Mel TormÉ, nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells.


    TormÉ made his movie debut in Frank Sinatra's first film, the musical Higher And Higher. His appearance in the 1947 film musical Good News made him a teen idol.


    Paced by his only hit of the rock era, Comin' Home Baby! is a real crossover record balancing a few groovy dance numbers (like the title track) with early-60s cool jazz versions of the standards Walkin', Moanin', and On Green Dolphin Street.

    The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood

    Lee Hazlewood was a late bloomer. Following a meandering career as a disc jockey, producer, songwriter, label executive and solo artist, Hazlewood hit the jackpot at the ripe age of 37 with "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," the song Nancy Sinatra took to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Its success convinced MGM Records that Hazlewood was a bankable star, and they signed him as an artist in his own right the same year. But as a self-described "non-singer" whose cult 1963 debut, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, was little more than a happy accident, they'd perhaps gotten the wrong end of the stick where Lee was concerned.


    In three years on the label, Hazlewood delivered three albums and sundry odds and ends, beginning with 1966 album The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood. The LP found Hazlewood gunning-in as much as he ever did-for commercial success, blending country, pop, novelty, mariachi, and lounge music into something unusually of-the-moment.


    Lushly orchestrated and-like the album that preceded it-half-sung, half-spoken in a way that Hazlewood made all his own, the album collected solo versions of songs made famous by Sinatra and others ("Sand," "Boots," "So Long Babe," "Summer Wine"-included as a bonus duet with Suzi Jane Hokom) alongside some of his career-best solo compositions, among them the Morricone-like opener, "For One Moment." It's a record of extremes: "When A Fool Loves A Fool" is as light and throwaway as anything he ever laid down, while the wistful "My Autumn's Done Come" (sample lyric: "Let those I-don't-care days come in, I'm tired of holding my stomach in") is as raw and honest.

    Music On Vinyl proudly presents a second release of the COLLECTED albums. The new albums will focus on memorable artists with almost a life span of original intriguing music, covering a timeless musical period!

    In the early 1950s a man of short stature attempts to win over his audience. With a hoarse voice he delivers songs that do not catch on. People jeer at him. Tomatoes fly through the air. The Frenchman with Armenian roots slinks off the stage, but does not quit.

    Ironically, the song that makes him a household name is the song in which he recalls his agonising trial. The audience reacted indifferently when Charles Aznavour decided to try out his new song on stage. But when he went on to greet the audience for one final time they all stood and gave him a thundering standing ovation.

    In the sixties, hits and classics succeed one another. Nobody is bothered any more by his husky voice, by his small stature or his rugged characterful face. The croony For Me Formidable (1963), the heart breaking Et Pourtant (1963) and the nostalgic Hier Encore (1964) confirm his standing as a fan favourite. La Bohème (1965) and Emmenez-moi (1967) turn Aznavour into a superstar.

    In La Bohème, there are impressionist painters strolling in the shadows of the SacrÉ-Coeur, the compelling Comme Ils Dissent (1972) is the first chanson after Vichy France to overtly endorse homo sexuality and in the present France Of La Manif Pour Tous (the movement that opposes gay marriage), does it again to sound particularly topical. Camarade (1977) was about the nomenklatura, the ruling elite in the Soviet Union and is a social and historical topic. Avec Un Brin De Nostalgie is an Aznavour grand cru, maybe even the best he has made over the last thirty years.

    COLLECTED by Charles Aznavour is a wonderful collection of hits and classic by the French artist that touches your soul at every moment. It's an overview of his work during the sixties, seventies and duets with Johnny Hallyday on Il Faut Savoir and with Frank Sinatra Young At Heart. Also his English versions of How Sad Venice Can Be, The Old Fashioned Way, She and four more English songs are included on this deluxe Trifold 3LP album.

    Country singer and disc jockey Slim Willet's ode to tool-pushin'! Texas Oil Patch Songs was issued in 1959 by the artist on his own Winston label, and now is an impossibly-rare LP to dig up-and this Modern Harmonic edition is faithful to the original, including all twelve tracks, liner notes, and restored artwork! And on petro-blue vinyl!


    Ahh the "Concept Album" Critics write of Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours or of groundbreaking 60's rock opera opuses but while the big studios set the scene for rainy night walks or drug-fueled psychedelic trips, a Great Lost Treasure from the Great Texas Oil Fields lay buried deep in the bargain bins of Saint Peters' Holy Blood Of The Christ Thrift Store! For sure, Slim Willet's mighty collection of blue collar, well-digging classics stood little chance to begin with - only a few hundred were pressed - and, well, oil songs never really caught on in the way the similar trucking-songs boom would several years later. Maybe had Slim put this out during the great Gas Station/Truck Stop 8-Track Market of the 70's this could have been a hit album. But, with Slim's passing in 1966, it was never to be.


    Slim Willet (born Winston Lee Moore) was certainly a Big Fish in a Small Pond in the Independent Country Music World of the late 40s & early 50s. He's best known for penning "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes," a hit song for Ray Price, Skeets McDonald and Perry Como, all. Slim worked for many years with Bill McCall at 4-Star, made a stack of records as a singer, started his own Winston label, managed Dean Beard and various other hillbilly and rockabilly artists, but never really hit the big time. His greatest masterpiece, 1959's Texas Oil Patch Songs, was never fully appreciated until now. For all the tool pushers, roughnecks, derrick men & chain hands, THIS is your soundtrack."

    Dean Martin was always at his best when he sounded effortless, when the singing required no exertion-just the same amount of investment required to order a martini. Confident, refined, breezy, and easygoing, this 1960 Capitol album epitomizes the crooner's charm. In pairing with arranger and Frank Sinatra right-hand-man Nelson Riddle, Martin strikes all the right notes on this collection of then-recent and retro standards.


    Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP gets inside the core being of Martin's impeccably smooth, relaxed singing by presenting every phrase, dip, and inflection with lifelike realism. The LP does similar wonders for Riddle's backing orchestra. Horns teem with punch and midrange; rhythms possess incredible pacing; strings saunter and float. No Martin album has ever sounded like this. Mobile Fidelity also secured the rights to a bonus track, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, left off the album and released as a single in order to promote the movie Ocean's Eleven.


    While Martin enjoyed his biggest commercial success at Reprise, the aptly titled This Time I'm Swingin' is considered by many critics and vocal-pop fans to be his finest studio hour. He approaches each song with supreme confidence and debonair control, never overreaching his limits or breaking a sweat. Here, he more than lives up to his nickname: The King of Cool. Charismatic, assured, and note-perfect, the album belongs alongside any of the period sets cut by his pal and once-and-future labelmate Sinatra. No wonder that his most recognized hit, the aforementioned and included "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," was actually cut at these sessions.


    Riddle's expert ordering of the charts and direction of horns, strings, and piano equates to jazz and swing genius. Brass blows hard and strong during breaks, calm down for verses during which slinky 88s and swaying strings join the dance, and then rise up, the mix elegantly performed and irresistibly catchy. If you're not snapping your fingers and instantly transported to a swank nightclub within the first few passages of the opening "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me," check your system's setup.


    Yet Martin is the real star. Hearing him handle such classics as the devotional "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," upbeat "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," hopeful "Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You)," bluesy "You're Mean to Me," and clever "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" with such aplomb-and now, in such ravishing detail-will remind you why you love music, and why nothing of this ilk will likely ever be made again.


    Martin convincingly conveys the mood each song demands, but a sense of optimism, playfulness, and feel-good romance pervade this stylish effort. If you are a fan of real singing and emotional crooning, you cannot live without this analog edition. A veritable gem.

    Negotiations, the fifth full-length album written, recorded, and produced by The Helio Sequence, would sound different had it not been for a flood. In 2009, while touring in support of Keep Your Eyes Ahead, singer-guitarist Brandon Summers got an unexpected phone call in the middle of the night. Back home in Portland, OR, the band's studio/practice space was under nearly a foot of water. Heavy rains had caused the building's plumbing to overflow like a geyser. But Summers and drummer-keyboardist, Benjamin Weikel, were lucky: All of their best equipment was either on tour with them, or racked high enough off the studio floor to be spared.



    Still, the band needed a new home. After three months of searching, Summers and Weikel settled into a 1500-square-foot, former breakroom-cafeteria in an old warehouse. They no longer had to work their recording schedule around loud rehearsals by neighboring bands, but were free to create late into the night in uninterrupted seclusion. With twice the square footage, the space also had room for more gear, a lot more gear. They decided to use this opportunity to try something different.



    Summers and Weikel, who started playing together in 1996 and self-produced their first EP in 1999, have always been gearheads. But it wasn't until the success of Keep Your Eyes Ahead that they could afford to step things up: The duo spent months (and many hard-earned dollars) retooling their studio. They left behind much of the cleaner-sounding modern digital studio equipment and instruments they'd always relied on, and embraced vintage gear that would color their recordings with a warmer, deeper sound: Tape and analog delays, spring and plate reverbs, tube preamps, ribbon microphones, and analog synths.



    As the new studio came together, so did the songwriting. It proved to be the most spontaneous, open, and varied writing process they had ever experienced. Weikel, who was listening to minimalist/ambient composers like Roedelius and Manuel Goettsching, had created dozens of abstract synth loops of chord progressions and arpeggios. The two would put a loop on and improvise together with Summers on guitar and Weikel on drums, recording one take of each jam. Other songs like "One More Time", "October" and "The Measure" quickly formed from rough one-minute sketches by Summers, while the down tempo "Harvester of Souls" was completely improvised musically and lyrically in a single take.



    Tempering the free form approach to writing was Summers and Weikel's meticulous attention to production and arrangement. Taking cues from the spaciousness, subtlety, and detail of Brian Eno and late-era Talk Talk records, they moved forward. Listening to the recorded live jam sessions, they set to work transforming the ditties into actual songs. "Open Letter," "Silence on Silence", "Downward Spiral" and the title track - some of the spacier, mesmerizing songs on Negotiations - came together in this way. Summers' one-minute demos were brought to life in collaboration by Weikel spending weeks working on sound treatments and synth landscapes to enhance the songs.



    Lyrically, Summers affirmed the improvised ethos, working deep into the night ad-libbing alone in front of the mic, abandoning pre-written lyrics and instead preferring to create in the moment. His delivery was largely inspired by the starkness and understated romanticism of Sinatra's Capitol era "Suicide Albums", imparting a more introspective and personal tone. "I used to view a lyric as a statement," he says, "Now, I see it more as a letter you're writing to yourself or a conversation with your subconscious."



    This collection of shimmering, reverb-heavy songs is a meditation on those inner dialogues (hence, Negotiations) with solitude, memory, misgivings, loss, atonement, acceptance and hope. Most of all, it's a record that serves as a testament to the beauty, blessing, and excitement of a fresh start.

    Is That All There Is?

    Peggy Lee was 49 years old when Capitol Records released Is That All There Is? in 1969. It was her 42nd album, and it had been over 10 years since the singer born Norma Deloris Egstrom, in 1920, had last graced the US Top 40 with her presence; her sultry take on Little Willie John's 'Fever' scaled the upper echelons of the American hit parade in 1958.


    But Lee, a country girl with Scandinavian ancestry who hailed from the plains of North Dakota, had more in the tank. The haunting and idiosyncratic 'Is That All There Is?' (inspired by a short story called Disillusionment from German writer Thomas Mann) captured the public imagination when it was released as a single in the States and started climbing the pop charts, where it peaked at No.11. Such was the song's impact that it won Lee a Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance in 1970. Its success was a surprise to Capitol, who thought the song was too odd and esoteric to be a hit.


    The song opens Lee's album of the same name and, even today, remains a profoundly potent piece of music. It has the ability to simultaneously provoke conflicting emotions, eliciting both laughter and pathos. Combining a spoken narrative with a plaintive refrain sung over a jaunty rhythm, it evokes the Berlin cabaret scene of the 1920s and the spirit of German composer Kurt Weill. The song was penned and produced by noted hitmakers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and it's unlike anything else they wrote: a philosophical rumination that questions the meaning of things.


    Arranged and conducted by a young Randy Newman, 'Is That All There Is?' is beautifully delivered by Lee in plangent tones, mixing a droll, ironic humour with a poignant reflection on the absurdity and, indeed, disappointments of life. Despite the song's somber mood and theme of disillusionment, the chorus is gloriously carefree: "Let's keep dancing/Let's break out the booze and have a ball," Lee sings, and she sounds like she means it. (Understandably, the song - which was originally written for, and turned down by, Marlene Dietrich - has inspired many covers over the years, including notable versions by Tony Bennett and PJ Harvey with John Parish.)


    Though it was the undoubted cornerstone of Lee's 1969 album, there was much more to enjoy besides the title song. Another Leiber and Stoller composition, 'Whistle For Happiness', is stylistically similar to 'Is That All There Is?' while their 'I'm A Woman' is a swaggering, sassy blues that was first cut by Lee on her 1963 album of the same name and was a minor US chart hit at the time.


    Peggy Lee Is Love Story Single Label - 300Elsewhere, Lee deconstructs the Al Jolson-associated 'Me And My Shadow' and imbues it with a languorous sensuality, while the Nancy and Frank Sinatra duet 'Something Stupid' is reconfigured into a breezy bossa nova. Another highlight is her take on Randy Newman's 'Love Story (You And Me)', the opening cut on the singer-songwriter's 1968 debut album for Reprise, which is arranged and conducted by the composer himself. Newman's 'Johnny (Linda)' is also included and has an arrangement that recalls the vaudevillian quirkiness of the album's title track.


    Lee also embraced the rock music zeitgeist by tackling The Beatles' George Harrison-penned 'Something' and Neil Diamond's gospel-flavoured 'Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show', though she does them in her own inimitable way.


    Is That All There Is? dared to be different and showed that, though Peggy Lee was often typecast as a stereotypical jazz chanteuse, she was a much more versatile performer than had hitherto been revealed. Though its title song is an ode to coping with disappointment, that particular emotion is the last thing that you feel when listening to this classic album, which is a life-affirming delight from beginning to end.

    One of Rosemary Clooney's best records, and one of Duke's more accessible offerings, combined on one LP. The recorded output of the 1950's didn't get much more satisfying than this. Duke's music was always very sophisticated and this time it's even more obvious with a presence of such a talented singer as Rosemary Clooney. The songs are marvelous and she sounds young, fresh and sexy (ladylike sexy). In Blue Rose, not only are Clooney's vocals outstanding, but the arrangements are some of the prettiest of jazz.



    The band swings simply and sweetly, though still thoroughly in the Duke style. As if to make the point that the band is the 'other' star of this recording, there's one instrumental here - Passion Flower (Johnny Hodges on sax never sounded more sure of himself). Its inclusion in the program, without a vocal from Clooney, is at first bizarre - but seems to make sense within the context of the album.



    The fascinating album notes explain why and how separate tracks for Rosemary Clooney and Duke Ellington's orchestra had to be laid down. One would never realize that singer and orchestra were not together. They are totally in sync. This is not big, belting jazz; this is sophisticated, late night, intimate singing and playing. This is one of the most memorable pairings of a 'popular' singer with a jazz giant; ranking with the first Sinatra-Basie album and the Coltrane-Hartman session.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    In the pantheon of under-the-radar American guitar heroes, Howard Roberts looms large. A remarkably versatile musician who was one of Los Angeles' most in-demand session players from the early 1950s through the 1970s, Roberts' career encompassed an incredible array of studio assignments. He recorded with a dizzying assortment of acts, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, the Monkees, Dean Martin, Sonny and Cher, the Jackson 5, Peggy Lee, Eddie Cochran, Chet Atkins and the Electric Prunes. He also played on countless film and television soundtracks; his guitar work is featured prominently in the iconic theme music of The Twilight Zone, The Munsters and I Dream of Jeannie.


    Roberts was also an accomplished musical educator, co-founding Hollywood's Guitar Institute of Technology, writing a regular instructional column on jazz improvisation for Guitar Player magazine, and penning several highly-regarded guitar instruction books. As a guitar teacher, one of his students was a teenaged Phil Spector, for whom Roberts would later work as a session man.

Recorded at the legendary Studio A in the Capitol Tower, with a band that includes fellow studio legends Chuck Berghofer and Earl Palmer on bass and drums, H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player is a potent showcase for Roberts' fluid, swinging guitar work. The material offers ample opportunity for the artist to demonstrate his versatility, encompassing pop standards 9Lerner, Loewe If Ever I Would Leave You), bossa nova (Antonio Carlos Jobim's One Note Samba) and jazz (tunes by Herbie Hancock, Count Basie and Duke Ellington), along with such Roberts originals as Smolderin', Turista, Deep Fry and Dirty Old Bossa Nova.
