When You Wish Upon A StarBill Frisell (born 1951) is one of the leading guitarists in Jazz since the late 1980s. Frisell's eclectic music touches on Progressive Folk, Classical music, Country music, and more. He is known for using an array of effects to create unique sounds from his instrument.
His musical kinship with Miles Davis has been cited repeatedly in the music press. The New Yorker notes: Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet: in the hands of such radical thinkers, their instruments simply become different animals. And, like Davis, Frisell loves to have a lot of legroom when he improvises--the space that terrifies others quickens his blood.
His brand new album When You Wish Upon A Star featuresBill Frisell's arrangements and interpretations of Music for Film and Television. Featuring Petra Haden, a well known violinist and singer, she is or has been a member of several bands including: The Decemberists, Tito & Tarantula, That Dog and contributed to recordings by e.g. Beck, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and many more. She is the daughter of the late bass player Charlie Haden.LP 1

Small TownSmall Town presents guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan in a program of duets, the poetic chemistry of their playing captured live at New York's hallowed Village Vanguard. Frisell made his debut as a leader for ECM in 1983 with the similarly intimate In Line. The guitarist's rich history with the label also includes multiple recordings by his iconic cooperative trio with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano, culminating in Time and Time Again in 2007. Small Town begins with a tribute to Motian in the form of a searching, 11-minute interpretation of the late drummer's composition "It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago," the duo's counterpoint yielding a hushed power. Morgan has appeared on several ECM albums of late, as bassist of choice for Tomasz Stanko, Jakob Bro, David Virelles, Giovanni Guidi and Masabumi Kikuchi. Small Town sees Frisell and Morgan pay homage to jazz elder Lee Konitz with his "Subconscious Lee," and there are several country/blues-accented Frisell originals, including the hauntingly melodic title track. The duo caps the set with an inimitable treatment of John Barry's famous James Bond theme "Goldfinger."1. It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago

Petra Goes To The MoviesPetra Haden's wondrous new album Petra Goes to the Movies offers a one of a kind opportunity to experience film scores in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain all the emotional resonance of the originals. Out this January 22 via Anti-, Petra Goes to the Movies features Haden, a highly regarded session musician (Foo Fighters, Beck, the Decemberists) and former member of That Dog, delivering a cappella versions of scores from films such as Psycho, Rebel Without A Cause, Taxi Driver, Superman and more. Haden, who hails from a musical family that includes her father, distinguished jazz bassist Charlie Haden, has a history of working a capella; in 2005, at the suggestion of bassist Mike Watt, she recorded and released an a-cappella rendition of the Who's pop masterwork The Who Sell Out to widespread acclaim. Upon hearing the record, Pete Townshend telephoned Haden to enthusiastically thank her, proclaiming her version of his album "beautiful."
Petra Goes to the Movies is the culmination of Haden's lifelong love for both vocal interpretation and movie music: "The idea of interpreting music with my voice started when I was little," she explains. "I would hear music around the house and mimic the instruments with my voice. And I love movies but my favorite thing about them has always been the soundtracks. When people hear this record I want them to feel what I felt when I first saw the film, even if they've never seen it."
In addition to Haden's multi layered vocals, the record features notable guest appearances by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell.1. Rebel Without A Cause Main Title - Rebel Without A

FramesThe debut Brian Haas & Matt Chamberlain album Frames features 11 instrumental compositions that spiral through the tempered scale. A through-composed work for piano and percussion, it was written entirely by Haas, the internationally renowned pianist and founder of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Now based in Santa Fe, Haas wrote Frames as a suite, equally influenced by stride piano masters Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller; the early minimalist works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich; and the lush aesthetic of modernists James Blake, Flying Lotus and Nigel Godrich. The music is pastoral, intensely melodic and tells the story of an imagined human life.
"After several years of non-stop touring with my band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey I felt completely drained," explains Haas. "I was pulled to move to the high desert and mountains of Sante Fe; the space/distance from the road, the unearthly view from my house and the strange hum of my new surroundings inspired this music. What started as an exercise in all 12 keys turned into Frames."
Brian Haas has recorded 21 albums and toured the world for two decades with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, a band he started while a student at The University of Tulsa. Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Chamberlain is one of the most revered musicians of his time having toured and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Tori Amos, Bill Frisell and Frank Ocean among others.1. Deep Dead Blue - Live At Meltdown180 Gram Vinyl
Available on Vinyl For The First Time
A lovely, understated exercise in minimalism, Deep Dead Blue documents a set of otherwise unaccompanied guitar/vocal duets between Bill Frisell and Elvis Costello, recorded live at the Meltdown Festival in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on June 25, 1995.
Frisell co-wrote the title track, one of the five songs bearing a Costello credit; the others are underexposed items from Costello's mid- to late-'80s catalog, plus selections by Charles Mingus (Weird Nightmare) and Lerner & Loewe (Gigi).
Costello is once again the refined, mature vocal stylist of Painted From Memory, but Frisell expertly controls the dynamics of each piece, often stripping his part down to single-note lines, which lends surprising emotional impact when he allows full chords to wash over Costello's voice.1. Bon IverBon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.
Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.
Bon Iver was recorded and mixed over the course of three years at April Base Studios, a remodeled veterinarians clinic located in rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin.1. Perth

Ghetto Bells"These songs are ultimately and admirably patient and fluid, building not to grandiloquent climaxes but to a greater and greater complexity of meaning." - Pitchfork
"The songs are all-encompassing. They sweep you up. They really get to you." - Washington Post
Ghetto Bells matches the poetic power of Vic Chesnutt's words with some of the most elegantly simpatico backing he's ever been blessed with, including jazz icon Bill Frisell on guitars, legendary writer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Van Dyke Parks on piano, accordion, and organ, Don Heffington of Lone Justice and the Jayhawks on drums and percussion, classically trained session-man Dominic Genova on double bass, Tina Chesnutton electric bass and Liz Durrett on exquisite backing vocals. At the time,Vic Chesnutt had released a dozen albums in 15 years. Ghetto Bells has apowerful resonance that reveals itself slowly. A pair of seven-minute pieces are the heart of the album, both moving forward slowly, but ever so purposefully. One of them, "Rambunctious Cloud," is further sweetened by the presence of Van Dyke Parks on accordion and a staggering guitar solo from Bill Frisell.LP 1

SlipstreamBonnie Raitt's new album Slipstream is daring, bluesy and steeped with the inimitable slide guitar and soulful vocals that could only be hers. Slipstream marks her first new release in seven years, and the debut for her newly minted label, Redwing Records.

Additional guests include Bill Frisell, Al Anderson (NRBQ), Ireland's Paul Brady and Maia Sharp.
The album's 12-tracks feature Raitt's renditions of songs by such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Joe Henry and Loudon Wainwright III. An updated, reggae-fied version of Gerry Rafferty's Right Down the Line leads the charge here as the album's first single.1. Used to Rule the World

Avery County, I'm Bound To You...The music on "Avery County, I'm Bound To You" was played by a fantastic and diverse group of characters. The rhythm
section is Matt Weiner (Blue4Trio, Hot Club Of Cowtown) on upright and electric bass and Dan Peters (Mudhoney,
Screaming Trees, Nirvana .briefly) on drums.
The horn and woodwind section were made up of Hans Teuber (Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Ani Difranco) and Steve
Moore (Jim White, Earth, sunn0))), Laura Veirs). These two multi-instrumentalists covered a lot of sonic territory with
flute, piccolo, alto flute, clarinet, trombone, Wurlitzer and Hammond Organ.
And we did our best to keep our roots with a few local Folk and Old Time players: Charlie Beck on banjo, Nova Devonie
on accordion, and Jakob Breitbach on fiddle.

New Way HomeNew Way Home, MiWi's debut album on Team Love, is the result of life taking an unexpected turn. With the help of Monica Frisell, the songs began to take shape in early 2013. As things developed, friends such as Joanna Warren, Curtis Fowlkes, Rob Jost, Mara Kaye, Natalie John, Timothy Allen, Bill Frisell, and Conor Oberst, all enthused at the sound, eagerly jumped in to lend a hand. New Way Homeis a short, immediate, and catchy album, but its real magic lies in its ability to invoke a wide range of sonic diversity while not losing sight of its singular vision. A track like "Ashes To The Wind" invokes legendary bluesman Howlin' Wolf, while "Here I Am" positions itself neatly between singer-songwriters like Ron Sexsmith and Stuart Murdoch. The album's songs range from playfully vengeful ("Everybody's Fuckin' With Me") to sorrowfully serious ("New Moon").
MiWi's voice is frank, his phrasing crisp, his lyrics easy to grasp yet full of twists. The songs document a season in a life, offering empathy to the listener while asking for the same in return.1. Radio

City Of RefugeIn her relatively short musical career, Abigail Washburn has covered a lot of ground; both physically and metaphorically. Bouncing between China and Appalachia has informed much of her musical output and influenced a body of work that goes far beyond the usual claw hammer banjo repertoire.
Her Rounder debut, City of Refuge is a sublime marriage of old-time and indie-pop. On the album Washburn pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody's ever heard before. The album features My Morning Jacket's Car Broemel, The Decemberists' Chris Funk, Turtle Island Quartet's Jeremy Kittell, atmospheric jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, veteran Nashville studio percussionist Kenny Malone, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig, Wu Fei, master of the guzheng, and the Mongolian stringband Hanggai, who managed to contribute ambient throat-singing from halfway around the world.
The album was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Tift Merritt, Mudhoney) and features the talents of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, Kai Welch (Tommy and the Whale). The Following MountainThe Following Mountain, the newest solo album by experimental folk artist, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon, will be released on Nonesuch Records.
Created with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and Amidon's frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, it represents a new approach for Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. The album features a rare guest appearance by drummer Milford Graves, known initially for his work in the 1960s with free jazz legends Albert Ayler and Sonny Sharrock.
The Following Mountain was made during two distinct recording sessions: an initial weekend in Brooklyn where Ismaily and Amidon brought in Graves, percussionist Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix), and saxophonist Sam Gendel for a heavily improvised session; followed by time in the studio over the summer in London, where Amidon worked with Leo Abrahams to shape and develop the songs.
The Following Mountain is a walk through the thickets of the imagination, Amidon said, a personal mythology of sounds and visions and characters. It is my first album of original music, but is still linked to the Appalachian music I love, as well as improvisation, beats, Don Cherry, Vermont, London.

Lily-OLily-O, a new album of reimagined folk songs by Vermont-born singer/fiddler/banjoist/guitarist Sam Amidon will be released by Nonesuch Records. The album was produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Feist) and features the innovative jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, along with Amidon's other frequent collaborators, bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Chris Vatalaro.
Frisell has been a hero of Amidon's since the young Vermont native first heard the guitarist play at the Village Vanguard during a teenage visit to New York City. The two musicians stayed in touch and had their first live collaboration in 2011; not long after, Amidon began contemplating a return to Iceland to make a third album at Sigurðsson's Greenhouse Studios. He eventually invited Frisell to join him and Sigurðsson, along with Ismaily and Vatalaro, to record what became Lily-O.
"I decided to put us all in a room together in Reykjavik for a few days," Amidon said. "I knew if I got Bill together with those guys they would get into a deep situation. I imagined that we would do something weird and fiddle-based, but when we got in there it just felt great to sing the songs I had gathered. Recording took about four days. I'd teach them the basic structure of the song; we'd do a few takes, and move on to a new one. There's maybe one or two overdubs but otherwise you're hearing what we played."
Lily-O's ten songs are mostly traditional folk songs gathered from disparate sources and refashioned in Amidon's signature way. The interplay between the four musicians is informed by their backgrounds in improvised music and the spontaneous nature of the sessions. As always, the central element is Amidon's voice, which, in his deceptively understated manner, tells tales of adventure, love, violence and redemption.
Lily-O follows four albums by Amidon including his 2013 Nonesuch debut, Bright Sunny South. 2010's I See The Sign and 2008's All Is Well were made for the Icelandic label Bedroom Community and featured orchestral arrangements by composer Nico Muhly. Along the way Amidon has performed worldwide in myriad contexts, collaborating with musicians such as Muhly, Thomas Bartlett/Doveman, Beth Orton and Glen Hansard. CoveredTen years ago, a 22 year old songwriter entered a recording studio with producer Tucker Martine (My
Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Beth Orton) to make a record.
Poised with one of the greatest talents for carrying Appalachian music into new places, Sarah Siskind
penned a record in which every moment, every stitch thread perfectly. Recorded to 2-inch analog tape, Covered is a masterful record, in which American music and guitar icon, and one of Sarah's musical heroes, Bill Frisell plays a key role.
But amid plans for a national release, sinus illness struck and multiple surgeries followed, and Covered was instead released independently on a much smaller scale than originally planned. With little tour and press support, the album never earned its place in the hearts it could have...
A few years later, by chance, I came across a copy of Covered while digging into Frisell's catalog, for I also have a deep admiration for the music icon and couldn't get enough of his work. Looking back, I had no idea how much this album would shake me down; it quickly earned its place in my heart. I listened so much from then on that I wore out several copies, all the while pondering how such an amazing record could go largely unnoticed by the masses.
Four years passed, Sarah fully recovered from her sinus issues and set her sights high once again. She
went on to record her much lauded boutique double EP Studio.Living Room and followed it with widely-acclaimed Say it Louder, which earned her 2009 Nashville Music Awards' "Americana Album
of the Year." As she gained more and more attention, writing songs for Alison Krauss and the like, I listened along but still continued to wear out Covered, bewildered as to why it still wasn't grabbing more people with its poise.
Finally, yet still overdue, we at Chigliak give you Covered, reissued and released for the first time on
vinyl. Listen and let it shake you down.

The Paris Concert: Edition Two (Pre-Order)
Numbered, Limited Edition! Pressed at RTI!
Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Masters!
Edition Two of The Paris Concert by Bill Evans was recorded live in November 1979 at L'espace Cardin in Paris, France. Evans is assisted by bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. This second edition of the two includes Miles Davis' Nardis as well as 34 Skidoo.
Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, singing melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.
Marc Johnson is an American jazz bass player, composer, and band leader. In 1978, Johnson joined legendary pianist Bill Evans in what would be Evans' last trio. Johnson toured and recorded with Evans until the death of the pianist in 1980. His many recording credits since then include discs with Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Eliane Elias, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Baron, Philly Joe Jones, and many others.
Joe LaBarbera is an American jazz drummer and composer. He is best known for his recordings and live performances with the trio of pianist Bill Evans in the final years of Evans' career. Prior to joining Evans he worked in the quartet of Chuck Mangione and Joe Farrell. After Evans' death in 1980, Joe joined singer Tony Bennett.
The music is sensitive and subtly exciting. Until the release of some later live sessions from 1980, this could be considered Bill Evans' final recording and serves as evidence that, rather than declining, he was showing a renewed vitality and enthusiasm in his last year. -Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Bright Sunny SouthNonesuch Records releases Sam Amidon's label debut, Bright Sunny South in 2013. Produced by Amidon with his childhood friend and longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman) and legendary English engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Vashti Bunyan, R.E.M.) and recorded in London, the record features a band made up of Bartlett and multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro. Jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler also makes a cameo. Amidon himself not only sings but also plays banjo, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and piano on the album.
Amidon describes Bright Sunny South as a "a lonesome record" and a return to the more spare sound of his 2007 self-recorded debut, But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted: "There was an atmospheric quality to my last two records; those albums are like a garden of sounds," says Amidon, "but this one is more of a journey, a winding path. The band comes rushing in and then they disappear. It comes from more of a darker, internal space."
A longtime admirer of Boys' work, Amidon was particularly enamored of his recordings with Martin Carthy in the 1970s, as well as the Ali Farka TourÉ/Toumani DiabatÉ duet albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch: "Those are so beautiful. I listened to all of that. I loved the sense of documentation, the unadorned quality. Everything sounded so clear."
The Vermont-born and raised, London-based Amidon is known for his reworking of traditional melodies into a new form. In addition to country ballads and shape-note hymns, Bright Sunny South features interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, including Tim McGraw's "My Old Friend" and Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off." The record also includes a version of "Weeping Mary," a shape-note hymn that his parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, had recorded with the Vermont-based Word of Mouth Chorus for Nonesuch Records on the 1977 disc Rivers of Delight: American Folk Hymns from the Sacred Harp Tradition.
Bright Sunny South follows 2010's critically acclaimed I See the Sign, which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his "quirky alchemy contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents" and Pitchfork, which said, "[Amidon's] interpretations are so singular that it stops mattering how (or if) they existed before."
Prior to I See the Sign, which was released on the Iceland-based label Bedroom Community, Amidon released But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted (Plug Research, 2007) and All Is Well (Bedroom Community, 2008). In addition to his solo albums, Amidon has collaborated on performances pieces with musical polymath Nico Muhly, toured as part of Thomas Bartlett's group Doveman and the Brooklyn band Stars Like Fleas, collaborated with Beth Orton, and embarked on a series of live shows with the guitarist Bill Frisell.

American TunesNonesuch releases American Tunes, a new studio album by legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint. Toussaint had just completed the album when he passed away in November of last year during a European tour. Recording took place at two sets of sessions with producer Joe Henry: solo piano at Toussaint's New Orleans home studio in 2013, and with the rhythm section of Jay Bellerose and David Piltch-joined by guests Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Rhiannon Giddens, and Van Dyke Parks-in Los Angeles in October 2015. The album comprises solo performances of Professor Longhair tunes and band arrangements of songs by Toussaint, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and others.
Allen Toussaint's work as composer, producer, arranger, and performer, especially in the 1960s and '70s, helped shape the sound of R&B, soul, and funk as we know it today. He collaborated memorably with artists ranging from Lee Dorsey and Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters and Dr. John to the Band and Paul McCartney. The New York Times recently said, In Mr. Toussaint's long career as songwriter, arranger and producer he has honed a piano style that's supportive and allusive; a little trill or tremolo sums up all the splashy joys of New Orleans patriarchs like Professor Longhair and James Booker, and a syncopated chord under right-hand octaves summons gospel. Mr. Toussaint has the two-fisted, rippling vocabulary of the city's piano legacy, but he uses it in dapper ways.
Toussaint's children, Alison Toussaint-LeBeaux and Clarence Reginald Toussaint, who have long served as their father's managers, said of the American Tunes album, Our father approached this project with great care and understanding of the songs selected and paid true homage to Professor Longhair, his musical hero. He wanted to bring as much of the Toussaint touch as he could to these wonderful classics.
Nonesuch previously released The Bright Mississippi in 2009. Also produced by Henry, the record includes songs by jazz greats such as Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Django Reinhardt, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn. The album received tremendous critical praise, with the Boston Globe saying it couldn't sound more like New Orleans. (Toussaint) revisits jazz classics and takes them for a stroll through Preservation Hall, imbuing his own funky brand of pop-song charisma. The results are coolly sophisticated, an unfussy, mostly instrumental set of slink-and-slide joints shot through with a harmonic imagination that turns even a traditional hymn into an after-hours swing Toussaint's musical soul guides all, making the classics sound like his own.
That project indirectly grew from Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, the benefit album that Nonesuch released in fall 2005 to aid hurricane victims in the wake of the Katrina disaster. That collection opens with a version of Yes We Can Can, the Toussaint song the Pointer Sisters made famous, newly recorded with producer Joe Henry, and it included a solo piano piece, Tipitina and Me, co-written by Toussaint in tribute to Professor Longhair.
Joe Henry had first worked with Toussaint when he invited the pianist to join the sessions for I Believe to My Soul, a studio convocation of mature R&B stars. Henry subsequently acted as producer on Toussaint's post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse. He describes the most recent sessions: I have been working with Allen Toussaint-under his spell and subject to his influence-for a full decade now. He was a quiet radical, musically-speaking, and a prince of great humility.LP 1

Marc Johnson is joined on the album by Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny and Joey Baron for this recording of soothing, relaxing music.
This date is a surprisingly mellow and melodic affair, particularly when one considers the personnel (bassist Marc Johnson, both Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny on guitars and drummer Joey Baron). Much of the music is comprised of unclassifiable, folkish melodies filled with lyrical guitar solos. Frisell is quite restrained throughout (adding a country feel to many of the songs) and Metheny is less distinctive than usual, alternating between his electric and acoustic guitars, as well as his 42-string pikasso guitar. The quartet performs seven Johnson originals (most memorable is Union Pacific), two by Frisell and one from Metheny. The overall results are pleasing and relaxed music... All Music Guide

Good Dog, Happy Man (Out Of Stock)Following upon the success of last years Gone, Just Like A Train, Bill Frisell reunites with his much-admired partners from this last outing plus a handful of others for another session of inspired music-making. Joined by renowned drummer Jim Keltner and Lyle Lovett bassist Viktor Krauss, the core band is further expanded to a quintet with the addition of Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang) on dobro, mandolin and steel guitars, Wayne Horvitz on organ and Billy Cox on guitar, with a special guest appearance by Ry Cooder.
With the gut-first feeling of rock, the subtleties of jazz, and the earnestness of country, Bill Frisell continues to create a genre unto himself. As with his last two albums, he continues in a musical vein that has brought him a new level of sales success and radio play, all the while maintaining the respect he has commanded as an innovator for nearly 20 years.
What Frisell has begun to fashion on his latest releases is a sensibility as unmistakably American as that of Charles Ives or Duke Ellington, with the harmonic and tonal complexity of both and a seductive melancholy all his own. L.A. Weekly1. Rain, Rain
