Birth Of The Cool'
Birth Of The CoolImport
Culled from three separate nonet sessions that took place from early 1949 through March of 1950, The Birth Of Cool was the literal blue print for the sound known as cool jazz thus its title. Featuring the fluidity of bop, innovative big band arrangements and a relaxed overall elegance, the Gil Evans arranged sessions find Davis supported by pivotal performances from such jazz luminaries as Kai Winding, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz and Max Roach among others. Despite such a large band, the proceedings sound remarkably intimate with concise and sophisticated songs built largely on tone and mood. A seminal recording in the history of jazz!1. Jeru

Miles Davis' 1957 Columbia Records release Miles Ahead finds the jazz legend renewing his creative partnership with arranger Gil Evans which began in 1949 with the Birth of the Cool. Featuring a 19-piece band assembled by Evans and supple arrangements highlighting Davis as the central voice, the evocative 10-song set is anchored by a passionate take on John Carisi's Springsville, the Iberian shadings of Delibes' The Maids of Cadiz and the excellent Blues for Pablo, which foreshadowed the directions Evans and Davis would go on the subsequent masterpiece Sketches of Spain.1. Birth Of The Cool (Awaiting Repress)Capitol Records 75th Anniversary Vinyl
Birth of the Cool is a compilation album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, originally released in 1957 on Capitol Records. It compiles twelve tracks recorded by Davis's nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950.
Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical music techniques such as polyphony, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz. Most of them were originally released in the 10-inch 78-rpm format and are all approximately three minutes long.1. Jeru

Bitches Brew: LiveImport
It has been said that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't there to push it forward.
Even if that isn't true, Miles Davis certainly was one of the greatest music innovators of the 20th century, pioneering Cool Jazz (with the 1949 recording of Birth Of The Cool), Modal Jazz (with 1959's Kind Of Blue) and Fusion with 1970's Bitches Brew.
Bitches Brew Live contains recordings from two performances: the first three songs were recorded at his Newport Jazz performance in July 1969 - a couple of weeks before the Bitches Brew Sessions in August of that year - and have remained unissued till this day.
Miles performs with Chick Corea on electric piano, Dave Holland on acoustic bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums; musicians who all went on to become leaders of the Fusion movement. (Wayne Shorter unfortunately missed this date because he was stuck in traffic.) The A1 track 'Miles Runs The Voodoo Down' is the first professionally live recorded version of this song.
The other six songs were recorded at the Isle Of Wight festival in 1970,and contain 'Directions' and 'It's About That Time' from the In A Silent Way sessions.
Included in this exclusive release is a 12 page booklet with a liner note essay by renowned music journalist Michael Azzerad, and a special etch on the D side.Side 1

Very CoolLee Konitz is widely recognized as one of the driving forces of cool jazz. His involvement with the movement included his participation in Miles Davis' pivotal album Birth of the Cool in 1949, as well as his extended work with pianist Lennie Tristano. During his long career, Konitz has played with musicians from a wide variety of jazz styles. Many Konitz connoisseurs consider Very Cool to be one of his finest albums as a leader. It consists of an original tune by Lee, two by the date's trumpeter Don Ferrara, a couple of jazz standards, and Billie's Bounce, one of many homages by Konitz to his (and probably all modern saxophonists) mentor, Charlie Parker.1. The BirthAfter traversing the galaxy as the road crew for fellow Oklahomans The Flaming Lips, a strange yet melodically intoxicating band has emerged, the psych/prog/experimental pop quartet Stardeath And White Dwarfs. One-half stoners with nothing to do but roll joints on their King Crimson record sleeves and one-half confetti launchers/space bubble technicians, Stardeath And White Dwarfs debut their own free-floating circus with their first full-length album, The Birth. A mind-trip of emotion and mood, recalling everything from upper dance freak-outs to downer Floyd-esque anthems, The Birth celebrates a love of all things psychedelic. This standard-weight black-vinyl release is housed in a single-pocket jacket with a digital download card for the full album.
Stardeath And White DWarfs independently released the six song EP, Thats Cool, in 2005, followed by the 7 single in the U.K., Toast & Marmalade For Tea/Chemical, on Half Machine Records in 2008. The band has toured with Deerhoof, British Sea Power, Band Of Horses, Starlight Mints and The Flaming Lips.

Gil Evans and TenPart of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.
All mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 200-gram LPs pressed at Acoustic Sounds' state-of-the-art pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom.
Deep groove label LP pressings, tip-on jackets on thick cardboard stock
This reissue marks the first time ever that the stereo master tapes of this landmark title have been used.
In 1957, Miles Davis, high on the success of his recent collaborations with his old friend Gil Evans, persuaded Prestige Records to give Evans his own record date. Evans packed the resulting album with the brilliance that music insiders had recognized since his days as an arranger for Claude Thornhill in the 1940s and his work on Davis' Birth of the Cool recordings. Writing for only 11 instruments, Evans used his wizardry with dynamics, motion and harmonic voicings to create orchestral effects suggesting a substantially larger orchestra. His settings stimulated his musicians to inspired improvisation. Among the soloists are trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, saxophonists Steve Lacy and Lee Konitz, and Evans himself, making his first recorded appearance as a pianist.

The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix (Speakers Corner)
Critics find this album rather difficult to evaluate. Their judgement ranges from a colourful mixture to a successful cover album to a masterly fusion and an homage to an artist whose life came to an end far too soon - Jimi Hendrix. Jimi had long been gone when this album was recorded in 1974. But it is almost superfluous to look back to the legendary Hendrix if you focus on the great Gil Evans. After such milestones as Birth Of The Cool and Sketches Of Spain it isn't difficult to regard these late audiophile masterpieces as a logical development of Evans's exceptional skill as an arranger.
When you listen - or rather experience - how the crystal-clear sound in Angel is heightened to an emphatic ballad on the saxophone, or how rich soulful vocals storm ahead in a funky style (Crosstown Traffic), or fluffy, cloud-like sounds are built up on the flutes in Castles Made From Sand, then it is no longer of importance who thought out the music. It is sufficient that it exists and is pleasing to all who hear it. It is also unimportant whether one reveres Hendrix's immemorable melodies or whether one pays homage to Evans's visionary soundworld: a recording such as this could only be born of the two.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Angel

SunswimmerFrom just south of the Appalachian Mountains, in the rolling
hills of Athens, GA., comes the roaring young four-piece,
New Madrid. Following the critical acclaim of their 2012
independently released album Yardboat, the band signed

reverb-drenched vocal harmonies, soaring underwater noise

Electric Balloon" a beaming mix of ice-cool vintage '80s no

group harmonies Ava Luna has infectious,
minimalist, ESG-style beats for days."
"...itchy art-funk...future-perfect R&B...slip-sliding harmonics...
" equal parts brain and soul, pairing tricked-out synth work with Motown-inspired dance
- THE NEW YORKER
After years of writing and performing, Ava Luna has refined their doo-wop soul meets
punk-as-fuck aesthetic into something bold and glaringly defiant in today's indie
music landscape. Following the release of their critically lauded first proper
full-length Ice Level, the band spent an intense 2-week period writing and recording in
upstate New York. Unlike previous efforts that were meticulously mapped out, the
songs that would become Electric Balloon were a family effort. according to frontman Carlos Hernandez. For the new album, former Columbia composition student
Hernandez relinquished the reins a bit, opting for a more organic approach to writing
the material for what would become Electric Balloon. As Hernandez explains, it was a
birth of confidence. I grew closer to my bandmates, began to see the roles of a
family playing out. Ethan cooks dinner for all of us, we make lewd jokes, and then
'after-dinner storytelling' takes the form of playing music.
In the wake of Ice Level, Ava Luna's sharp edges have melted away just enough, making
it easier to connect with their no-wave grooves and soaring harmonies. Distilling
everything from James Chance and ESG to contemporaries like Dirty Projectors and Of
Montreal, Ava Luna have landed on an aggressively unique sound that still manages to
be accessible. Hernandez goes on to explain the stories and moments here are
clearer, as in a conversation. The moment appears, you grab it with your hands, screw
the lid on the mason jar. There was no tweaking, no second-guessing. Julian's mantra
for the process: 'First thought best thought.' .And for my part, I sing my best about
encounters, friendships, some moments beautiful and others painful. A bike shop

Easy Star's ThrillahFollowing up on the hugely successful reggae tribute albums of Dub Side of the Moon (2003), Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009) comes the reggae adaptation of the greatest selling record of all time - Michael Jackson's Thriller. The album, titled Easy Star's Thrillah will be released August 28, 2012 (a day before the 53rd anniversary of Jackson's birth). Easy Star's Thrillah brings back several of the reggae stars from previous albums, such as vocalists Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Steel Pulse, Luciano, Mojo Morgan (Morgan Heritage), alongside the diverse playing of guests Yossi Fine (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Stanley Jordan), Joe Tomino (Dub Trio/Matisyahu), Andy Farag (Umphrey's McGee), and horn tracks courtesy of Israel's highly-acclaimed funk/hip-hop band Hadag Nachash. The album will be preceded by the July 10th digital release of the Billie Jean EP, which includes two album tracks, along with non-album remixes and a dub version.
In selecting Thriller, Easy Star Records co-founder Lem Oppenheimer says, We've always tackled the greats - The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead - but while we wanted to take on another huge album, we also wanted to blaze new trails. In Thriller we found those new trails in a number of firsts for the series: the first album by an American artist, the first non-concept album, the first R&B/soul record, as well as the first release from the 80s.
For me, I was most excited for Thriller, says producer/arranger/guitarist Michael Goldwasser. I was always more of an R&B/soul and reggae kid growing up and I have an intense personal connection to Michael Jackson's music. As usual, the process initially involved Goldwasser spending a few months on arranging the songs. Writing the arrangements for this album was a cool challenge. I didn't have to try to make non-dance music into dance music as on our previous albums because the original Thriller is so danceable already, but I needed to find ways to make each song groove in a different way from the original version. I didn't want any of the arrangements to be obvious in that regard. In the end, Goldwasser's arrangements are some of the most interesting in his career.
Now that the hard work in the studio is done, the band is looking forward to bringing this music on the road, adding some dance/pop songs to their already varied sets. The band's live show, which was nominated for a UK Festy Award in 2009, already features tracks from the band's previous three tribute albums, along with original material. An extensive fall tour of the US and UK is already set up (US dates listed below), with more to come over the next year. As the original Thriller album comes up on its 30-year anniversary in November, what better way to celebrate this timeless album than to catch the Easy Star All-Stars perform their reggae-infused versions of this pop masterpiece.1. Gauntlet HairOver the last year and a half, Gauntlet Hair has seen its noise-pop anthems released on 7s by tastemaker labels Forest Family (IWas Thinking... b/w Our Scenery) and Mexican Summer (Out, Don't... b/w Heave) respectively. And with the self-titled debut, the duo of Andy R (guitar, vox) and Craig Nice (drums, triggers) fulfill the booming promise of those now collectible singles.
Written and recorded in Spring 2011 at Andys grandmothers Chicago-area house while she was away on vacation, Gauntlet Hair is a subtle refinement of the sounds weve come to associate with the band the trunk-rattling bass; the ecstatic, tinny post-punk guitar; the din of ecstasy. But what was once simply jarring in its audacity is now also bursting with new colors. While the band continues to mine the pulse-and-clap cues of modern club rap, the intricacies of Andys Durutti Column-inspired, circular guitar lines come a bit more to the fore on Gauntlet Hair. They are at once oblique and; pounding and glassy; melodic and exploratory. Standout Top Bunk, with its tide-like suction and throb, is a cooled-out, coastal slowgrind. The songs multiple sections overlap and interlace through bass throb, elliptical guitars and affably shouted and falsetto-sung mantras. Its a shining, disorienting example of
the careful, Byzantine sculpture behind each of these party jams. Its music made with the sole purpose of losing yourself both mind and body inside of it. They take the listener into the red, evoking that unmistakable feeling of being squarely in front of the speaker as it is screaming blissfully loud melodies.
Playing music together since they were teenagers, Andy and Craig relocated from Chicago to Denver three years ago to hone a sound that seems to have gained inspiration from enormity of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. In Denver, the duo is a crucial part of the avant-pop DIY scene that birthed contemporaries like Pictureplane,Woodsman and Hollagramz, and is anchored by the community built around all ages venue Rhinoceroplis.
