Esoteric WarfareEsoteric Warfare is the fifth studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem.
It has been seven long years since MAYHEM released their fourth and last full-length Ordo ad Chao. Founded as early as in 1984 in Oslo, Norway by the late and legendary frontman Øystein Aarseth aka Euronymous, bassist Jørn Necrobutcher Stubberud, and Kjetil Manheim Haraldsson on drums, the band took its name from the VENOM song Mayhem with Mercy. Continuing and renewing the Black Metal style heralded by the English trio, MAYHEM soon became the instigators of the so called second wave and were at the heart of every controversy surrounding that genre. The suicide of misanthropic frontman Per Yngve Dead Ohlin. The murder of Euronymous by guest bass player Count Grishnakh alias the notorious Varg Vikernes. Church burnings, drugs and prison sentences, MAYHEM were always at the centre of the storm. Yet not even death could stop the Norwegians, who released one musical milestone after the other. The incredible rawness of the Deathcrush EP (1987) was followed by the still iconic and genre defining De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994), which featured devilish drummer Jan Axel Hellhammer Blomberg, who had joined in 1988. The vocalist on this album was the Hungarian Attila Csihar of TORMENTOR fame, who returned later in 2004 to take over from his meantime heir, the enigmatic original singer Sven-Erik Maniac Kristiansen. The latter was featured on the Wolf's Lair Abyss EP (1997), which was written mostly by highly talented guitarist Rune Blasphemer Eriksen, who scored a massive success with the highly controversial Grand Declaration Of War (2000). Those were followed by the more classic Chimera (2004) and a masterpiece of utter darkness called Ordo Ad Chao (2007) with Attila singing again, which inspired many bands to follow in its tracks. MAYHEM had always witnessed many line-up changes due to the circumstances described above. Therefore even the loss of Blasphemer, who decided to focus on his other band AVA INFERI in 2008, did not stop the band. Activities mainly revolved around live shows, until the right balance was found again with the recruitment of Morten Teloch Iversen. The guitarist had already made a name for himself with NIDINGR, which is highly regarded amongst black metal enthusiasts yet remained mostly an underground phenomenon. Now his first compositional work with MAYHEM is unleashed and demonstrates how perfectly Teloch has captured the essence and spirit of the Norwegian legend by linking the band back to its roots, while at the same time taking a step forward into the spearhead position of the genre instead of dwelling in nostalgia. The A-side, Psywar comes with a different mastering than the album version. The B-side, From Beyond the Event Horizon is a rare track taken from the much rumoured Budapest Recording Sessions, which the band decided to scratch. Tremble world, MAYHEM are back with a vengeance!1. Watchers

Death To False Metal is not a traditional collection of studio leftovers or songs from the vault, but a wholly original follow-up to Weezer's just-released Hurley. The album was created using the basic tracks of 10 previously unreleased recordings-nine never-before-heard songs plus one cover-to assemble a brand new and truly modern-sounding record. The result is an evolution for the band, a giant step forward with a nod to the past.
''These were great songs, great recordings, but for some reason they didn't make the final cut for previous records,'' Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo stated. ''Some just weren't right for the albums we were recording at the time-just a bit ahead of their time or too 'rock.' Now, the time is right to introduce them. Together, they are the album that should logically follow Hurley.''
Featuring tracks the band originally began recording from the late '90s to late '00s, Death To False Metal was a labor of love for Cuomo and his co-producer Shawn Everett, as well as the entire band. Each track was individually evaluated by the production team of Cuomo and Everett to figure out how to make each of the songs reach their full potential, and ultimately fit harmoniously on the album. After that process, they then brought in each band member in to complete the parts needed. Some of the ten songs received a major overhaul, while others got the equivalent of a sonic tune-up.
''Turning Up The Radio'' is the result of Cuomo's 2008 collaborative YouTube project, ''Let's Write A Sawng,'' for which he invited fans to submit ideas. As they went through the steps of composing a tune, eventually, 15 people became involved. This track is one of only two songs not solely penned by Weezer for Death To False Metal.
''Blowin' My Stack,'' ''Losing My Mind'' (which features some of the most raw and personal emotions in a Weezer song), ''I'm A Robot,'' and a rock cover of the massive R&B hit ''Un-Break My Heart'' were all first recorded prior to the release of 2005's Make Believe. ''I Don't Want Your Loving'' was originally laid down as a demo for 2002's Maladroit. The abrasive punk-metal ''Everyone'' hails from post-1998 Pinkerton period, as does the pop song ''Trampoline.'' The piano-based ''Odd Couple'' and new-wave-style ''Auto-Pilot'' were laid down prior to 2008's Weezer (aka ''The Red Album'').
The title Death To False Metal comes from a phrase that Cuomo and his younger brother used when they were kids. Musical integrity was a matter of life or death then, and now the new album is a reminder of how important music is for both Weezer and their many fans. At a time when many of their contemporaries seem to have forgotten how to rock, Weezer is ready to teach them. Cuomo and fellow axe-slinger Brian Bell crafted nine epic guitar solos-one for nearly every song on Death To False Metal-and with the band's signature hooks in full effect, Weezer's school of rock is back in session.1. Black MetalIn its review of Dean Blunt's The Redeemer - which they later named their top album of 2013 - FACT called Blunt "the premier art prankster
of our time," while acknowledging his earnestness; Tiny Mix Tapes,
who would give the album the #2 spot in their best of the year rank- ings, praise the work for its liberating "short-circuiting of the bound- aries of taste and instilled critical response," while speaking to the
album's near-paradoxical emotional depth.
Blunt's newest odyssey, Black Metal, rides this tension between criti- cal detachment and mainlined human feeling, and in fact he climbs
ever-steeper theoretical heights just as his emotionally stark songs
become, at times, startlingly intimate.
A true multi-media vanguard, Blunt employs original instrumentation
along with elements of pastiche and his unique vocal performances
to create songs and recordings that are not only beautiful, but also tie
into his larger project that incorporates music, visual art, and the writ- ten word to play with identity, cultural signifiers, and artistic agency.
But Black Metal is above all a brilliant, majestic collection of songs, encompassing everything from hypnotic long-form experiments to
ballads almost disarming in their sweet simplicity, swirling equally
with fascinating sounds and fascinating ideas. Blunt's influences are
wide-ranging, from rock's underground pioneers (he quotes Sonic
Youth in interviews; the album leads with a Big Star sample), to neo- classical composers, to early indie pop (another track samples The
Pastels), to classic rock, hip-hop, and R&B. But rather than coldly
compiling them, Blunt brings the works and genres he draws from
into a new musical and cultural conversation.
In the cover story to September's issue of The Wire, Blunt explains
his relationship to his listeners: "Whatever is communicated through
the purity of intention is out of my hands because I didn't know
anything beyond that." With his newest, most accomplished, and
most vexing album, Blunt invites us to draw our own conclusions in
his expansive and fascinating world.1. Lush

Metal Church is the self-titled debut album of the heavy metal band of the same name. The album was originally released independently in 1984. Based on the success of the album, the band was signed to a recording contract by Elektra, who reissued the album in 1985. The cover art depicts a cruciform Gibson Explorer hidden in shadows and smoke.
Some of their most notable songs are the opener Beyond The Black, their title track, the instrumental Merciless Onslaught, Gods Of Wrath (which is different from all the other songs, as it had clean vocals, clean rhythms, and fluent solos) and the Deep Purple cover Highway Star.

Black NightVery few bands come close to sounding like the metal legends Black Sabbath. The appropriately named Iron Man is one of the few who actually did, a very special band in the underground heavy metal scene that dared to re-create the dark/doomy sounds that Sabbath famously pioneered, but with their own twist.
Originally released in 1993 by Hellhound Records, Iron Man's classic debut album Black Night, marked the birth of one of the few bands who dove head first into the heavy rock sounds and dark atmospheres that Black Sabbath trailblazed.
The 7-song set is all about supersonic riffs and brutal heaviness, a dynamic that would even make Black Sabbath proud. Shadow Kingdom Records has now remastered the impossible-to-find but essential Black Night to make it sound as heavy as humanly possible which is scary in and of itself!1. Choices

Black CelebrationWhether the band felt it was simply the time to move on from its most explicit industrial-pop fusion days, or whether increased success and concurrently larger venues pushed the music into different avenues, Depeche Mode's fifth studio album, Black Celebration, saw the group embarking on a path that in many ways defined their sound to the present: emotionally extreme lyrics matched with amped-up tunes, as much anthemic rock as they are compelling dance, along with stark, low-key ballads. The slow, sneaky build of the opening title track, with a strange distorted vocal sample providing a curious opening hook, sets the tone as David Gahan sings of making it through another black day while powerful drums and echoing metallic pings carry the song. Black Celebration is actually heavier on the ballads throughout, many sung by Martin Gore -- the most per album he has yet taken lead on -- with notable dramatic beauties including Sometimes, with its surprise gospel choir start and rough piano sonics, and the hyper-nihilistic World Full of Nothing. The various singles from the album remain definite highlights, such as A Question of Time, a brawling, aggressive number with a solid Gahan vocal, and the romantic/physical politics of Stripped, featuring particularly sharp arrangements from Alan Wilder. However, with such comparatively lesser-known but equally impressive numbers as the quietly intense romance of Here Is the House to boast, Black Celebration is solid through and through.

Black WidowNature counts the black widow spider amongst its most fascinating and dangerous anomalies. The female arachnid often devours its mate after copulation. It's both a delicate and dangerous predator. In This Moment isn't all that different from this enigmatic beast. Led by frontwoman Maria Brink, the Los Angeles hard rock outfit strikes with a seductive metallic bite on their aptly titled fifth full-length album, Black Widow.
Black Widow is a metaphor for this innocent young girl who gets infected with life, traumas, experiences, and the balance of light and darkness, explains Maria. She becomes this poised and powerful creature. That's the album.
We went into this with the title Black Widow, says lead guitarist Chris Howorth. It fits the image of Maria as this powerful heroine. If you think of the boys in the audience watching our stage show, she's like the black widow pulling them all in.
The record, the first for the band on Atlantic Records, picks up where the group's 2012 breakthrough, Blood, left off. That album saw In This Moment debut at #15 on the Billboard Top 200, their highest chart position to date, and eventually sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone. It also spawned the single Blood, which rose to #9 on the Mainstream Rock and Active Rock Songs charts. A sold out headline tour, HELLPOP, followed, as well as appearances at the Uproar Festival and Rock On The Range, and jaunts with Shinedown and Papa Roach. After the whirlwind of Blood subsided, Maria and Chris retreated to Las Vegas in February 2014 to begin working on what would become Black Widow with longtime producer Kevin Churko [Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch].LP1

Black Masses (Awaiting Repress)For those who crave Sabbath-like dirges, Electric Wizard has few peers. - The Chicago Tribune
World-class British doom metal band Electric Wizard are back with their long-awaited new album Black Masses to be released courtesy of Metal Blade Records/Rise Above Records. The legendary group's seventh studio album was recorded with Grammy Award-winning British recording engineer Liam Watson (The White Stripes) in London's Toe Rag Studios. Long hailed as the true heirs to Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard have achieved near iconic status in the metal underground and the band prepares to annihilate the planet with Black Masses, their dark prayer to Luciferian heavy metal via crackling, vintage valve amplifiers set to full overdrive.
Propelled by gigantic riffs and dripping with dark, bluesy undertones, Black Masses is an ugly, sleazy and dirty album steeped in unruly themes of '70s exploitation cinema, occultism, substance abuse and narco-satanism. Taken as a whole, the record creates a twisted amalgam of late '60s dark acid psychedelia and early '80s satanic metal, all draped in both vile, misanthropic imagery and lyrics.
This ritual incantation of heavy metal sorcery will break down your psyche as wave upon crushing wave of lead weight acid-laced Doom leaves you numb and broken before our unholy altar, declared Electric Wizard cult leader Jus Oborn. Symmetry In BlackFirst time available on vinyl - Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Crowbar with the release of Symmetry in Black
In a genre as prone to flights of fancy as heavy metal, Crowbar have always felt like a grounding presence, anchored to reality with their seemingly impossible heaviness. Keeping up their good works, the New Orleans sludge metal masters return with their tenth album, Symmetry in Black, an exercise in consistency that proves the band is still up to the task after 25 years of brooding sonic devastation. The album finds the band shifting gears from the pummeling assault of 2011's excellent Sever the Wicked Hand to something slower (though with Crowbar that's a fairly relative term).
Some things haven't changed, however, namely the powerful playing and singing of Kirk Windstein, whose anguished bellows and penchant for lumbering riffs continue to act as Crowbar's bellwether. While this consistency has been key to their longevity, what really makes Crowbar special is their relatability. When other bands are off telling tales of demons and black rituals, Windstein and company take on earthly woes like addiction and fearing our own mortality. Despite their delivery over a brooding, glacially paced riff, lines like Reject the thought of losing what is mine/Ascend above your own demise, from Reflection of Deceit, feel like they're meant to empower listeners rather than bring them down. Symmetry in Black is an album that shows us we don't have to waste our time fighting imaginary enemies, because the real world is plenty full of darkness that, much like Crowbar themselves, is always there.1. The Black Sabbath CoversWhen Jason Molina took on another artist's song, he willed his own universe into it, his own
personal and artistic mythology. Be it Conway Twitty or Townes Van Zandt, their blues were
infused with Molina's own entrancing blues. This pair of newly discovered, home-recorded
Black Sabbath covers is no different. Molina, a through-and-through fan of metal (seek out his
high school metal band the Spineriders' album if you haven't yet) peels back the sinister and
stoned elements of Sabbath, zeroing in on the loneliness and brooding.
He takes "Solitude,"
from 1971's unfuckwithable Master of Reality - and one of Sabbath's more mystical, near-proggy
songs - and doubles down on the title. Molina extracts Ozzy Osbourne's gorgeously
cooed vocal performance and transforms it into a high and lonesome sound, a desert campfire
howler. And on his cover of "Snowblind, from 1972's Vol. 4, it becomes obvious what a guitar
hero Sabbath's Tony Iommi was for Molina. Molina seemed to pull from Iommi's odd, simple
fingerings and tunings throughout his catalogue: from his first album (known informally as "the
black album") to Magnolia Electric Co.'s Josephine. Molina's brief acoustic cover dials back the
bombast, but you can surely connect "Snowblind"'s chord progressions with Molina's own on
the black album and Axxess & Ace.
Recorded in the midwest in the late '90s, during Molina's
multi-season run of batting 1.000, these two intimate songs are a bittersweet artifact of one of
the Rust Belt's titan songwriters.

Limited Edition Of 666 Individually Numbered Copies On Transparent Blue Vinyl
Seattle's Sanctuary recorded Into the Mirror Black at the infamous Sound City Studios in 1989. The band triumphantly ignored suggestions to tweak their Bay-Area Thrash & traditional Heavy Metal sound in favour of the then more commercially-viable Seattle Grunge-sound, choosing instead to firmly hold their ground with this often overlooked masterpiece. The heavy guitar sounds which you'll found on the album leaves plenty of space for the rhythm section and riffs. The excellent vocal work of vocalist Warrel Dane can be heard on the strong opener Future Tense and the lighter Epitaph. This pure heavy metal album is balanced between their aggression, melodies and soloing and marks it as a musical triumph in the late 80's.
Although the band reached its demise in 1992, Warrel Dane (vocals) and Jim Shepherd (bass) later carried the Sanctuary legacy forward with the formation of Nevermore. In 2010 they reformed and brought their songs back on stage. Lead vocalist Warrel Dane died in 2017.1. Future Tense

Black Out The SkyMetallic skate punk vets Strung Out are releasing a new acoustic EP, Black Out The Sky, on via Fat Wreck Chords. It features six new songs, as well as acoustic renditions of classics "Unkoil" and "Matchbook." Town of Corazon," is exactly the kind of song you want when you hear a skate punk band is going acoustic. It's still got choppy power chords, a big anthemic chorus, and punky melodic leads, just with a more tender approach. Singer Jason Cruz tells us the song "is about the heart as if it were a place. Throughout over 20 years in music, his presence coursed through the film scores, contributions to popular video game franchises, and official remixes for the likes of Steve Aoki and more. Along the way, he lent his voice to tracks for everyone from Linkin Park to Tech N9ne. However, 2018 sees him doing something he has yet to do: release his first solo album.
Writing and recording on the road, he played guitar, keys, and anything else he could get his hands on. Moreover, the music was primarily recorded live. Led by the single "What It Is," it continues a tradition by boldly treading new territory.

Now they finally mark their return with a vicious work of art that can be defined as timeless in the truest sense of the word: »Eonian«.
Conceived in the heart of the Norwegian black metal scene in 1993, DIMMU BORGIR quickly broke free from the boundaries of the genre, daring to combine a traditional raven black sound with opulent symphonic orchestration. Soon they turned into pioneers of their field, forging groundbreaking albums such as »Enthrone Darkness Triumphant« (1997), »Spiritual Black Dimensions« (1999), or »Death Cult Armageddon« (2003), invading the entire world with headline tours and eventually turning into the most influential act of their genre after nine full-length studio releases. Seven years have passed since their latest manifesto »Abrahadabra«, they are now returning to rip apart the space-time continuum with »Eonian«.
From a musical point of view, the band explores their boundaries in every direction with this new record, with the black metal parts even rougher and darker than before, and the epic, orchestral moments pushed to their ultimate limits. This time DIMMU BORGIR were aiming for a more organic sound for their devilish offerings, and reached out to Jens Bogren, who engineered the 10 new tracks inside his Fascination Street studios. The cover artwork was designed in fascinating detail by Zbigniew M. Bielak.
The songwriting core of DIMMU BORGIR furthermore consists of charismatic vocalist Shagrath, as well as the string wizards Silenoz and Galder, but other familiar faces also emerge from the darkness: Drummer Daray and keyboarder Gerlioz are still part of the team, and Gaute Storaas helped with the choral arrangements for the majestic voices of the Schola Cantrum Choir.
The lyrical theme of the Norwegians' tenth studio work follows a philosophical concept, dealing with the illusion of time and Luciferian codes:
"Time, when not approaching it from the construct we're used to can't be defined and thus it is illusory", explains axemaster Silenoz. "There's only an 'eternal now', which the album title is already hinting at. When we travel between the worlds seen and unseen, the perception of time ceases to exist, it has no function. Our energy is our torch and our compass when we make rifts and pierce through our the veil - when we go beyond." Silenoz refuses to grant more information than that, hence why DIMMU BORGIR's albums have always been open for interpretation and felt somewhat like a dark room in which every listener believes to see something different in front of their light seeking eyes.
"»Eonian« represents the illusion of time, everything that is and always has been. For us, it also marks the 25th anniversary of DIMMU BORGIR and the album itself is a tribute to our own history and the Norwegian black metal history", adds Shagrath.
Since their debut album »For All Tid« from 1994, DIMMU BORGIR have always released their epic new works in regular intervals, but this time around, the Norwegians couldn't tame the beast of their creativity that quickly, and therefore they took the time it needed to slowly weave their collective ideas into these nine new tracks:
"Some of the songs on this album were written in 2012. All of us have our own pre-production studios and just write separately, without too much communication at first. Over a time period of one or two years we collect our ideas and then get together and try to get the best out of the material", says Shagrath. "Sometimes this can be quite challenging, because we have different tastes and opinions - but that makes it also more interesting for the listener, since we want to create music that makes you feel as if you don't know what's behind the next corner."
Silenoz agrees: "The main challenge is to hold back the beast. You're so into what you're doing that sometimes it's easy to forget that you have to approach the beast without waking it up right away, because you know you won't be able to control it. It's actually pointless to trick yourself to believe you can ever control art... It's like going into a lion's den with a rope tied around your waist in case you need to be pulled out real quick. Being our own producers also mean we have to step out of our own egos and look at our material from an 'outside' perspective. This is another challenging part of the songwriting process because you put so much of yourself into it - and then to start shaving off things, trim things down instead of adding - is a tough process. Letting go can sometimes be really hard but when we step out of ourselves and look into the mouth of the beast, only then we're able to distinguish what to feed it next."
Thus, both classic black metal invasions such as 'Lightbringer', but also highly symphonic charged anthems like 'Interdimensional Summit' gather on »Eonian«, with one of the band's personal favourites being the experimental, folkloristic 'Council of Wolves And Snakes'. Risking a look far beyond the horizon, this song proves that the band follows 'no formula, no absolute', as Silenoz vows, and shows that the path sometimes guides them to places they would have never expected to end up when they started their journey.
On the previous album, »Abrahadabra«, the Norwegians irritated some militant black metal elitists by appearing in opulent white / gray costumes. And although they chose a different appearance for »Eonian«, DIMMU BORGIR always keep new surprises in store:
"We're definitely a band that does not follow any set of 'rules', if any; we're out to break them - for sure. Not that it's a goal per se, it's just who we are. We knew the white/grey look would raise a few eyebrows but whatever we do, or not do, we'll end up raising eyebrows", Silenoz states and Shagrath adds: "The album feels like a rebirth, but also like a logical continuation. Our music comes naturally. We're not sitting down in a circle, thinking about what we could do next - it has to come with a flow and with whatever is in your mind at that time, it needs to be spontaneous and is exactly what we could do at that time. Each one of our releases was linked to a certain time period of our life."
After having released the live DVD »Forces Of The Northern Night« in spring 2017 which provided a monumental overview of the shows that DIMMU BORGIR had performed with a big orchestra and choir, the time is over in which fans needed to watch the band members on screen - hence now they are ready to storm the stages of the world again. The first headline slots at Europe's major festivals, such as Wacken and Hellfest, have already been confirmed, and further live plans are currently being forged for the second half of this year. The Lightbringers are back - and they've come to split apart the heavens:
"We obviously rely on our fans, if a band says they don't care - they're lying. We're definitely ready to work hard to convince the 'doubters', the 'dwellers ready to strike', that what we have to offer is still very much valid. A new generation of fans and listeners who come from a different 'time' than we do are out there now, not shy to let artists hear it! And we're not shy to let them hear what we've been up to!"1.
