    Child Is Father to the Man is the debut album by Blood, Sweat & Tears. Originally released in February 1968, the album cover was considered quite innovative showing the band members sitting and standing with child-sized versions of themselves.


    Blood, Sweat & Tears was originally formed by Al Kooper. Members included at time of recording were Randy Brecker on trumpet, Bobby Colomby on drums, Steve Katz on guitar and Jim Fielder on bass amongst others. Child Is Father to the Man reached number 47 on Billboard's pop album chart and is considered an album which draws in folk, blues and jazz elements fusing with rock.

    Blood, Sweat & Tears are truly a worldwide gift to rock and jazz fusion enthusiasts everywhere. Over four

    In 1968, BS&T's lead vocalist Al Kooper left and David Clayton-Thomas entered this stellar group of jazz
    and rock musicians, bringing a handful of new songs as they banged out their first major chart single with You've Made Me So Very Happy. The sound was new and exciting, the voice was thrilling, the horns meshed with rock and roll, fusing a brand new vibe, and the Blood, Sweat & Tears LP soared to the number one spot. It also received a Grammy for Album Of The Year in 1969.


    This masterpiece smash included enough traction to be called a greatest hits album in its own right. Especially when you get two more hit singles with Spinning Wheel (Grammy Award winner) and Laura Nyro's And When I Die. These radio and fan favorites graced the airwaves on the ever growing FM radio format and helped bolster even further the rest of the BS&T album with follow-up hits like the soulful tour de force of God Bless the Child, Traffic's Smiling Phases and of course Steve Katz's brilliant Sometimes in Winter. All in all, making this self-titled second album one of the most revered in their long-lasting and huge catalog of classic recordings.

    There'll be disappointment in store for those who expect to hear the voice of David Clayton-Thomas when listening to the present Blood, Sweat & Tears LP, Child Is Father To The Man. Experts will know however that on the group's very first album they will get to hear the excellent Al Kooper. The man is far more than a singer, for he not only plays the piano and various other keyboards but has also composed almost all the numbers and made the arrangements for the string ensemble. Bluesy pieces such as I Love You More and I Can't Quit Her and the vocals from Kooper are the real gems here. The amalgamation of pop, classic and jazz, which was made so popular in the Sixties by such groups as Chicago Transit Authority, Colosseum and Soft Machine, is here combined by Blood, Sweat & Tears with the acid-folk-rock mix emanating from San Francisco.

    Originally released in 1963, Blood, Sweat and Tears is the fifteenth studio album by American icon Johnny Cash.


    Essentially the album is a collection of songs about the American working man. It includes the classic ballad The Legend of John Henry's Hammer and the single Busted. Five years after the release of Blood, Sweat and Tears, both songs appeared on one of Cash's most famous records, At Folsom Prison.


    The album's title is inspired by a quote from Winston Churchill, saying he can offer nothing but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. According to critics the album consists almost entirely of first-rate material and is an essential album in the Johnny Cash catalogue.

    Blood, Sweat, & Tears: 3 (Speakers Corner)

    1970 was a really good year for Blood, Sweat & Tears. The colourful, distinguished group was awarded a Grammy® in the categories "Album of the Year", "Best Contemporary Instrumental Performance", and "Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)".



    The concept of merging jazz, blues and arrangements of classical themes worked well, with music journalist Leonard Feather commenting that »it brought music into rock«.
    Everything seemed to be allowed - as long as it sounded good: almost spontaneously, it seems, the musicians develop a somewhat boozy, cheery Hi-De-Ho happening out of synthetically created chivalric fanfares, or conjure up a medieval scenario (The Battle) with the archaic sound of a harpsichord and solo voice. That caustic big-band soul (Lucrezia MacEvil) and seemingly familiar rock songs (Fire And Rain) find their niche here fits in with the free spirit of this third album, which boasts no otherwise specified title. One listens to this disc, wondering what surprise is in store in the next beat, the next phrase, the next number. And there is a wonderfully liberating feeling in knowing that nothing is a 'must' but all is allowed.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    This historic 1968 summit meeting features three of the era's greatest musical talents: blues guitar hero extraordinaire Mike Bloomfield, multi-talented keyboard visionary Al Kooper and Buffalo Springfield/CSNY founder and ace axeman Stephen Stills.


    After achieving prominence for his work as a member of the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and for his role in Bob Dylan's transition to electric rock, Kooper hit upon the idea of cutting a rock album using the same approach that was the standard methof for jazz recordings: Pick a leader or two co-leaders, hire appropriate sidemen, pick some tunes, make some up and record an entire album on the fly in one or two days.


    The project grew into Super Session, which combines a side of live-in-the-studio performances by Kooper and Bloomfield and a side featuring Kooper and Stephen Stills. Instrumental support was provided by bassist Harvey Brooks and keyboardist Barry Goldberg, both of the Electric Flag, and a veteran session drummer Eddie Hoh. Super Session proved to be both a commercial smash and a seminal influence, becoming the biggest-selling release of Bloomfield's career and inspiring countless other artists to attempt similar studio-jam recording projects.


    Out of print on vinyl for more than two decades, Super Session has been meticulously restored for the LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality, high definition vinyl, and features the original cover art reproduced in its entirety.

    Church performed the album title and lead single, "The Outsiders," on The 47th Annual CMA Awards, airing live on ABC Television on Wednesday, Nov.
    6, where he was nominated for two CMA Awards this year: Male Vocalist and Musical Event of the Year (with Jason Aldean and Luke
    Bryan for "The Only Way I Know"). The song is an ode to the manner in which Church and his fans have built his career, as an inclusive group together
    fighting to have his music heard.

    The musicians are aiming high with their desire for a "Super Session", for it's not something that can be planned. Only when the time, place, and audience play along, when one's lucky star is shining brightly, and the musicians have a good day, then one of music's great moments might be captured on tape. Not forgetting the recording technicians who also have to be in the mood!



    In 1968 this all happened to be the case with the majority of the nine numbers on the Columbia LP: Season Of The Witch (written by Donovan) in its present version is one of them, as well as You Don't Love Me and the Dylan classic It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry. All in all, one must consider the numbers with Steve Stills as most successful in the sense of a session because here each musician inspires the others. In the super session with Kooper and Bloomfield, the guitarist stands in the limelight while the other musicians back him up.



    Very often the three soloists even surpass the greatest moments of their own groups (Al Kooper's Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag; Steven Stills's Buffalo Springfield). In 1968 the magazine Rolling Stone judged this album to be one of the best releases of the year: an accolade which is completely justified and is still valid to this day. What better reason to get your copy of this "highly recommended" album without delay.

Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Now That Everything's Been Said

    We all know the Carole King who wrote some of the biggest hits of the '60s, from "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" to "Pleasant Valley Sunday," via "The Locomotion" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." We also know the singer-songwriter behind Tapestry, the album that launched King as a solo singer in her own right. But in between-and not nearly as well known-is King's band, The City, and their album, Now That Everything's Been Said.


    By the mid-'60s, King's marriage to Gerry Goffin, with whom she'd written many of those wonderful hits, had hit the rocks. A divorce loomed, and King all but retired to raise their two daughters. She headed west to Laurel Canyon in '67, taking the children with her, and made the previously unlikely move of joining a progressive folk-rock band. King formed The City with future husband Charles Larkey on bass and Danny Kortchmar on guitar and vocals. With King on piano and vocals, they created a folk rock sound that pre-empted the singer-songwriter boom of the '70s.


    Produced by Lou Adler and featuring Jimmy Gordon on drums, The City's sound is deep and soulful, imperfect but passionate. And the songs, with King writing or co-writing all but one, are as exceptional as you'd expect and as widely covered as her factory work. "Now That Everything's Been Said" was a hit for American Spring, "A Man Without A Dream" was tackled by The Monkees, and "Hi-De-Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)" was a hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears. Central to the album's appeal is King's own stirring reading of her track "Wasn't Born To Follow," covered masterfully by The Byrds for the Easy Rider soundtrack.


    King had been used to a life on the sidelines, and her stage fright left the trio unable to tour the LP which adversely affected their fortunes. That, plus some behind-the-scenes distribution problems, meant the album was quickly deleted, and it remained so for the next thirty years-partly at King's request. Even so, its failure was a surprise to those concerned. "I was 26 when Now That Everything's Been Said was released in 1968," King says of the album. "[We] expected it to zoom to the top of the charts within, at most, a few weeks. Individually and together, we optimistically imagined the album's success as if it had already happened. Danny and Charlie kept telling each other, 'It's a great album. The City is gonna be Number 1 with a bullet!'


    Listening now, you can feel the threads that lead to Tapestry and to the hugely successful performing career that followed. It's not so much an oddity in King's work as the missing link between her two lives. Reissued here in deluxe vinyl, this is, at long last, a chance to own this lost album.

    Just like the heavenly occasion which inspires its name, Return of Saturn, the latest album from Southern California rock band No Doubt, is best experienced with both feet firmly on the ground, and with eyes and ears held wide open.


    The album's title refers to the notion that in the first 29 years of someone's life (the same time it takes the planet Saturn to orbit the Sun), a person is only beginning to understand himself or herself, which, singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani explains, helped her to discern her own place in life as she turned 30 years old. I wrote the song 'Artificial Sweetener', Gwen says, which has the line, 'the Return of Saturn, assessing my life, second guessing.' From the time you're born till the time Saturn returns to that point is a time of reassessment and a growing period, where you second-guess everything, and you clear out things that are going to be in the way of moving on in your life. I really did feel like I was going through a transitional phase in my life as I made this album. I think the name Return of Saturn is relevant in the sense that it shows how we've grown as a band, and as songwriters.


    The culmination of two years of creative blood, sweat and tears for the quartet, Return of Saturn is a bold and exciting coming-of-age saga. An intimate view of the world as seen by a group of musicians and friends who watched their humble worlds turned literally upside-down by the unexpected (though well-deserved) success of No Doubt's third album, Tragic Kingdom. While that youthful recording reflects the concerns and observations of a band at the edge of possibility, Return of Saturn represents that same group looking collectively inward. What they saw and what they created those two years, will surprise and fascinate you. Who am I, and how did I get to this point in my life, when I thought I was going to be something completely different? -- that pretty much sums up the subject of this album, says Gwen.


    Return of Saturn was recorded in two Los Angeles studios during 1998 and 1999. Twelve of the album's 13 songs were produced by Glen Ballard, (Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith), whose contribution was a key ingredient in the album's creation. In our band, everyone has such strong opinions that if you put the four of us in the room together you could have some troubles, says bassist Tony Kanal. But if you get somebody as experienced as Glen, not only as a producer but as a songwriter, you can bounce ideas off him and get some really cool objective answers, and it helps level the creative playing field.


    One song on the album, New (also heard on the GO soundtrack) was produced by the band with Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads, Live). It was fun to start with a clean slate and create something brand new, says guitarist Tom Dumont, who also wrote much of the album's music. We hadn't really done much writing on the road, so when it came time, we had to come up with the entire record. Every time we wrote a song it was like having a baby. It's such a good feeling to sit down with an acoustic guitar and a tape recorder, and later to have created something really cool.


    In light of the international success of Tragic Kingdom (more than 15 million copies sold worldwide, including over 11 million in the U.S.), the four band members were bound to be subject to any number of outside influences and pressures when it came time to make their follow-up.


    But as it turned out, the band was able to turn any outside distraction to their ultimate benefit, beginning with pre-production and writing sessions at a rented Hollywood Hills house. I remember being in a very open, optimistic mood, says Tony, getting the house up in the hills, and just feeling like we had time to do it right. There was no deadline to deliver a record, so I remember not feeling pressure. It just felt like a good place to be, creatively.


    Drummer Adrian Young agrees: We were just more conscious of the fact that we're following a huge record, and we need good songs, but I don't know what kind of album we wanted, or expected to make. It was very experimental most of the time. In fact, we didn't have any predisposition about it. That's always a good way for us to approach the music. We've always been across the board, stylistically, and I'm glad we didn't lose that part of the band, he says.


    Songs on Return of Saturn like Marry Me, Simple Kind of Life and the album's first single Ex Girlfriend show vocalist Gwen Stefani in a reflective and unashamedly romantic mood, traits which she says are often overlooked in her hectic life. I think I am a romantic at heart, but my life in a lot of ways these days doesn't reflect that, she remarks. So I have this inner conflict about it, and this guilt about it. I'm very hopeful that someday those things will happen in my life, because it's all I've ever dreamed of. But right now it seems like my life doesn't have any room for it, and I won't make any room for it because I'm so passionate about what No Doubt is doing right now.


    The music on each of No Doubt's three previous albums (1992's No Doubt, 1995's Beacon Street Incident, Tragic Kingdom) runs the stylistic gamut, mixing in as many influences as the band members can think of, and this collection is no different. Tom says the band has few rules when it comes to songwriting. We discovered a way to write on songs like Just a Girl and Spiderwebs and some of the older ones, which we incorporated when we started this album, and that was that there were no preconceived ideas at all. We would sit down in a room with a tape recorder and acoustic guitars and start improvising things. All the songs were written very spontaneously, starting from a blank slate every time.


    The truth is, I feel like I've been turned inside-out after writing this album, adds Gwen. It's everything that I have been in the last two years, which have been really hard years for me. I just feet this sense of accomplishment, and this lightness has come over me since the album has been finished. It's so rewarding to be done and feel so proud of it, I can't wait for people to hear it.

    Inheriting a cross-pollinated love of country and rock & roll from their parents, The Band Perry - siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil Perry - say that they bleed the bright red blood of American music. The three have always felt the drive to perform and create music, sweating out the summers in Mobile, Alabama playing in any dusty roadhouse or church that would have them. Kimberly strapped on her first Gibson - and fronted her first high school band - at age 15, employing Reid, then 10, and Neil, only 8, as her roadies. Changing guitar strings and polishing cymbals for their big sister lost its charm after awhile, so the brothers formed their own band, opening for Kimberly's band.


    My bass and I've been attached at the hip since I was 10 years old, says Reid. While most of my friends were playing little league, I was sitting in my room learning Rolling Stones' and Beatles' bass lines. It's really all I've ever known. Even as the three worked in different bands, the siblings would spend nights at home playing together: I remember sitting out on our front porch singing old Hank Williams and Bobbie Gentry songs in three-part harmony, hoping to channel the spirits of old country through musical sÉance while fighting off the southern Alabama mosquitoes, says Kimberly. We always knew we'd take the stage together - all we were waiting on was the right moment. That moment came in July of 2005, when - after years of writing together - the siblings decided to join forces as one band. The Band Perry was then invited by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company to open all of the dates on their New Faces Of Country Tour that year.


    In the summer of 2008, after spending a few years on the road honing their sound, TBP met longtime Garth Brooks manager Bob Doyle. Partnering with Bob and Josh Pegram, The Band Perry spent the fall and winter of 2008 writing in Nashville and collecting songs for their first country recording session.


    The three of us bring different strengths into the writing room, Neil points out. Kimberly carries in a bag of melodies and lyrics, Reid always has some really great musical ideas in his back pocket, and I bring in a sense of humor and some thread that ties it all together.


    The new recordings caught the ears of Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, the CEO and President of Republic Nashville, signing to the new label in the summer of 2009.


    When talking about The Band Perry, each member of the trio stresses how much family figures into the mix: Reid, Neil and I share genes and a musical pedigree, Kimberly explains. We read the same classics and cook from the same recipes. With all of our likenesses though, I believe it's our distinctions that stir up the magic when we create. When the three of us sit down to write songs together, we pull from all of our individual perspectives and happenstances to create the most interesting song concoctions.


    There's a tightness between the three of us that goes way beyond even best friends, Neil adds. Family vocal harmonies can't be fabricated. And, besides - the three of us know that through the thick and thin of life and the music business, we're watching after each other.


    Blood runs thick. The music business can be hard, but the three of us are committed not only to our lives in music, but to living them together, Reid says. I think the security of knowing that about each other allows us to be uninhibited when we create. It's a democracy. It's a safe haven.

    Arguably, the Blood, Sweat & Tears that made this self-titled second album - consisting of five of the eight original members and four newcomers, including singer David Clayton-Thomas - was really a different group from the one that made Child Is Father To The Man, which was done largely under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboard player/arranger Al Kooper. They had certain similarities to the original: the musical mixture of classical, jazz, and rock elements was still apparent, and the interplay between the horns and the keyboards was still occurring, even if those instruments were being played by different people.


    Kooper was even still present as an arranger on two tracks, notably the initial hit You've Made Me So Very Happy. But the second BS&T, under the aegis of producer James William Guercio, was a less adventurous unit, and, as fronted by Clayton-Thomas, a far more commercial one. Not only did the album contain three songs that neared the top of the charts as singles - You've Made Me So Very Happy, Spinning Wheel, and And When I Die - but the whole album, including an arrangement of God Bless The Child and the radical rewrite of Traffic's Smiling Phases, was wonderfully accessible. It was a repertoire to build a career on, and Blood, Sweat & Tears did exactly that, although they never came close to equaling this album.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.
