    First Time On Vinyl

Sunday April 5th 1998 at Ronnie Scott's was a night to remember. For that evening the world famous jazz club was taken over by a blues crowd. Gone was the cool reserve for which jazz buffs are renowned and in its place came blues fans all set for a raucous good time, and Green fans eager to see how their man was doing two years into his comeback. This set is released on LP for the first time.

The recording includes many of Peter Green's most famous compositions such as 'Albatross', 'Black Magic Woman','Rattlesnake Shake', 'The Green Manalishi' and 'The Supernatural', plus versions of other blues classics as 'Travelling Riverside Blues' and 'Steady Rollin' Man', along with extensive liner notes.

    My Feeling For The Blues

Donny Hathaway as arranger, King Curtis as producer, and a rhythm section that included Jerry Jemmott and Cornell Dupree. The groove tempos are not too fast and not too slow; in other words just right. The horn arrangements are sublime and Freddie's performance is top-notch. My Feeling For The Blues is a one-of-a-kind blues album by the great Freddie King.

The first two songs, Yonder Wall and The Stumble set the tone for the whole recording. In fact, the album's opener is a laid-back rendition of Elmore James's Yonder Wall. King Curtis lays a great, soulful horn and Freddie's guitar sounds more upfront than on his previous LP.

From there, My Feeling for the Blues listens as a tribute to the Giants of the Blues genre: King tackles B.B. King's I Wonder Why and Woke Up This Morning, T-Bone Walker's Stormy Monday, Jimmy Reed's You Don't Have to Go and Eddie 'Guitar Slim' Jones classic The Things I Used to Do, while upping the pace with a frantic, instrumental take on Ray Charles What'd I Say.

One of the top best blues albums was getting harder to find, but is now available on vinyl again. Do yourself a favour and make sure you grab this one!

    In New York (Pure Pleasure)

Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most over-recorded artists in the blues genre. The recordings here were made at a pivotal moment in his career. In 1960, at 48 years old, he was no longer a star in the black community, but was becoming a folk legend. His deeply personal music not only reflected the experiences of his community but touched a universal nerve. Chris Strachwitz, who often recorded Hopkins, has called his records »brief audio snapshots of one of the great folk poets to emerge from the African-American experience in Texas.« When he died in 1982 he had recorded well over 600 'audio snapshots'. From his prolific output this Candid session ranks amongst his finest and most intimate work.

    Musicians:

    • Lightnin' Hopkins (vocal, guitar, piano)

Recording: November 1960 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City, by Bob d'Orleans

    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Blues In My Bottle

The great Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most natural of bluesmen-a poet who would often make up lyrics as he recorded. Because his meters and chord changes were frequently irregular, he was at his best when
unaccompanied, as on this 1961 Prestige date. Besides such blues standards as Wine Spodee-O-Dee, Blues in
the Bottle, and Catfish Blues, the album contains originals, including Beans, Beans, Beans about his stint on a railroad track gang and D-7 about his aversion to flying.

    Live At The Bootleggers

Live at the Bootleggers captures a moment in time, and a place in history when community was created around the buying and drinking of illegal liquor moonshine white lightening. It was recorded live at a bootlegger's homebase in Fayette County, Tennessee in 1971 at the behest of Lattie Murrell, whom Bengt Olsson and Bill Barth had tracked down to document. Besides Murrell, Barth and William Floyd Davis, the contributors to this record just happened to be spellin' with the same bootlegger that evening; they are unknown voices, arising with glory from the soak of moonshine, and then fading back into obscurity.

This double-LP audiophile edition of Blues is arguably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives.

And they've never sounded so vital, necessary, or dynamic.

Cut from the original tapes at Sterling Sound by iconic engineer George Marino under the supervision of Eddie Kramer, and pressed and plated at RTI, this 2LP version will forever stand as the definitive-sounding, high-performance edition of this historic document. Comes With A 8 Page Booklet

Over 50 years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequaled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his Feel Like Going Home book writes: "It's difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the clichÉs, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own."

Unfamiliar keys, clichÉ-free lyricism, spontaneity, an individualistic style in invoking his particular blues, all make Robert Pete Williams an idiosyncratic entry into the canon. It's impossible to listen to blues artists before him and hear strains of his particular style. None have matched it since. Louisiana Blues contains 10 songs recorded in the month of July 1966 out in Berkeley, California for John Fahey's Takoma imprint.

    Blues Singer

Pressed On 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Housed In A Gatefold Sleeve

Grammy Award 2004 Winner In The Category 'Best Traditional Blues Album'

The album is all acoustic and dedicated to John Lee Hooker with the line, In Memory of John Lee Hooker. You are missed.

Not known for his acoustic work, Buddy Guy unplugs for a rare album-length excursion into folk blues. The guitarist gets down and dirty with 12 tracks that sound like they were recorded after hours in his living room or on his back porch.

Guy's stinging leads are still evident as is his emotive voice, but both are less flamboyant in the unplugged setting. Accompanied by spare stand-up bass and brushed drums, Guy sounds nearly possessed on covers from Skip James (Hard Time Killing Floor), Johnny Shines (Moanin' and Groanin'), Son House (Louise McGhee), and John Lee Hooker (Sally Mae) among others. It's a low-key, low-down affair made for late nights, rainy days, and the saddest of moods.

Guy is just as convincing here--arguably more so--as on his barnstorming electric albums, making Blues Singer one of the bravest and most poignant albums in his catalogue.

The album earned Guy the 2004 Grammy Award for 'Best Traditional Blues Album'.

    The Big Blues

Sourced from the Original King Mono Master Tapes

Pressed on 180-Gram Vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI)

Standing well over six feet and weighing in at around 250 pounds, it's no surprise that Albert King earned the nickname "The Velvet Bulldozer." Standing on stage with his Gibson Flying V, named Lucy, King cut an imposing visual figure. After a few abortive recording attempts, King scored a #14 R&B single on King Records with "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong" in 1961. The song captured the distinctive call-and-response style between King's voice and guitar, a direct extension of his gospel roots and it was included on his debut album, The Big Blues. Backed by a razor sharp band, which included Ike Turner on piano, King showed an authoritative command of ballads, rumbas and mid-tempo shuffles. It was a sound honed in countless club gigs, a "vivid sound" as the LP jacket rightly proclaimed. To restore this sound to its royal splendor, Sundazed sourced this reissue from the original King mono master tapes. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, CA, this resurrected LP boasts breathtaking sound. Nothing less would have been worthy of one of the most important albums in the blues pantheon. All hail King Albert!

    T. Bone Blues

T-Bone Walker's masterpiece T-Bone Blues on Atlantic Records is often cited as not only one of his finest achievements, but also one of the blues genre's most important crowned jewels. This 1959 classic showcases the late blues master's legendary handling of the electric guitar and his unequalled ability to powerfully sing some of the most revered classics in modern blues history.

This definitive classic recording features this multi-talented artist's finest tunes like T-Bone Shuffle, Papa Ain't Salty No More and of course the iconic Stormy Monday Blues. Over the years, many acclaimed artists have gone back to this album for inspiration. Classic blues rockers like Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, B.B. King, John Mayall, The Allman Brothers, Boz Scaggs and Doug Sahm have all interpreted several songs from this classic album. Out of print for over forty years in the vinyl format, Friday Music is thrilled to announce the first time 180g gram audiophile vinyl release of T-Bone Walker's landmark masterpiece T-Bone Blues.

Impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso (T-Bone Walker/Muddy Waters/Johnny Winter/Boz Scaggs) from the original Atlantic Records monophonic tapes, this audiophile LP truly excites the listener, as each note bent and every vocal laid down by T-Bone Walker are truly captured in this historic recording.

Friday Music has corrected the original running order of this wonderful blues release, the first time since 1959, as well as used the original artwork elements and the stunning liner notes written by the late Ralph J. Gleason. As always, Friday Music includes a poly bag for the album cover and a poly line sleeve to protect your 180g vinyl album.

    Hooker 'N Heat (Pure Pleasure)

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots. Sporting a slightly revised personnel with the return of Henry 'Sunflower' Vestine and the incorporation of Antonio 'Tony' de la Barreda on bass, a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra on drums. Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker 'n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson, as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat.

The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill - probably as it was the group's record company that sprung for Hooker 'n Heat - make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic Boogie Chillen No. 2 stretches over 11-and-a-half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler.

    Musicians:

    • John Lee Hooker (guitar, vocal)

    • Alan Wilson (piano, harmonica)

    • Henry Vestine (guitar)

    • Antonio de la Barreda (bass)

    • Adolfo de la Parra (drums)

    Pacific Ocean Blue

At first a somewhat un-noticed Wilson brother at the beginning of the Beach Boys' career, Dennis Wilson later matured into an excellent songwriter, producer, and vocalist. His heartfelt ballads and pop gems contributed heavily to the Beach Boys' late 60's and early 70's output.

A 'target' of female enthusiasm, Dennis was assigned lead vocals for a few early novelty songs: Little Girl (You're My Miss America), Surfers Rule, and This Car of Mine. His first hit came in 1965 when Do You Wanna Dance opened the The Beach Boys Today! album and cracked the Top 20.

After the high peaks and deep valleys of the Beach Boys career during the late '60s, Dennis began writing songs (Little Bird, Be Still) for 1968's 'Friends'. Throughout the early '70s, Beach Boys fans counted on at least two Dennis songs on each LP, often tender ballads. He made his first attempt at a solo album as early as 1970, but quietly released only one single. He started to work again in 1975, recording with friend and producer Gregg Jakobsen during 1976 to complete Pacific Ocean Blue.

Though Dennis had started to work on his second album (provisionally titled 'Bamboo') even before the release of Pacific Ocean Blue, increasing problems caused several holdups.

In late 1983 Wilson drowned while diving around his boat in Marina del Ray, CA. Pacific Ocean Blue is his only complete solo effort released to the public and we're pleased to offer it in audiophile quality!

    Champagne Charlie (Pre-Order)

Blending ragtime blues, honky tonk harmonies, vaudevillian echoes and a musical persona entirely his own, Leon Redbone's 1978 release Champagne Charlie is a tour de force from one of the most mercurial, magical and talented artists in modern music.

One of the distinguishing factors on the record is the fine choice of material, which ranges from Jelly Roll Morton to Jimmie Rogers. As usual with Redbone, the fare is lighthearted and tinged with nostalgia, and sweetened by antique arrangements. The band is delightful, filled with jubilant horns, oboes, and trumpets and, of course, Redbone's rich baritone and throwback acoustic guitar shine.

The album, produced by Joel Dorn, is filled with the best that Dixie, Delta blues and ragtime jazz has to offer keeping true to the old style that made these songs so popular to begin with. Leon has a sort of irreverent, off beat approach to these old jazz classics that is just plain fun to listen to. A charming and romantic introspective collection of classic blues and jazz melodies... each performance is an irresistible listen...his style is unmatched.

Pastel Blues features Be My Husband and was written by Andrew Stroud, Simone's husband and manager at the time. She sings it a cappella with her handclapping and a hi-hat as her only accompaniment. The song was later retitled as Be Your Husband and covered by Jeff Buckley on Live at Sin-É (2003). The album also features covers of Billie Holiday songs, Tell Me More and More and Then Some and Strange Fruit.

    Blues & Roots

Blues & Roots is an album by Charles Mingus, recorded in 1959 and released in 1960. Mingus explained the birth of this record in the album's liner notes: This record is unusual-it presents only one part of my musical world, the blues. A year ago, Nesuhi ErtegÜn suggested that I record an entire blues album in the style of Haitian Fight Song (in Atlantic LP 1260), because some people, particularly critics, were saying I didn't swing enough. He wanted to give them a barrage of soul music: churchy, blues, swinging, earthy. I thought it over. I was born swinging and clapped my hands in church as a little boy, but I've grown up and I like to do things other than just swing. But blues can do more than just swing. So I agreed. Hubcap Music

Hubcap Music is the sixth studio album by Seasick Steve. About the release, he writes:

    Well, I'm still alive.

I made a new record. It's called Hubcap Music. That's cus I play some songs on a guitar made out of 2 hubcaps and a garden hoe, and cus I couldn't
    think of nothing else.

It's coming out on Third Man Records. Well, I'm happy about that. I think it's kinda funny record companies still called record companies. They don't
have much to do with records no more. Well, Jack at Third Man, he still likes records and Hubcap Music gonna be a real record...vinyl like. It was recorded on a tape recorder, on old fashion tape, mixed on tape, the vinyl cut from tape. Ain't no computers on this record at all!

Anyway, Dan is still banging on the drums and still banging the wine. My friends John Paul Jones, Jack White and Luther Dickensen playing too. Never thought I would even write that!!! Now I'm fixing to go out and play all over. That's the best and most fun thing. I Can't believe I get to do this...
    Can't believe it.

    Thanks from

    SeaSick Steve

    Live In Cuba (Box Set)

Playing Afro-Cuban repertoire, jazz classics and contemporary works, the JALC Orchestra may have done more for American-Cuban relations in a single week than all the political rhetoric generated from both sides of the Straits of Florida for the past 60-plus years. - The Chicago Tribune

Supercharged... A suave delight." - The New York Times
