Recorded At Copenhagen's Legendary Jazzhus Montmartre In 1967

Pressed On 180 Gram Audiophile-Grade Vinyl At Pallas In Germany

Previously Out Of Press For Almost Three Decades

Tenor-saxophonist Dexter Gordon was in peak form
when recording at Copenhagen's Legendary Jazzhus
Montmartre in 1967. A portion of that recording would
later become Body & Soul, an album originally released
by Black Lion Records, which has been out of press
on vinyl for almost three decades. Now, just shy of fifty
years after the performance was recorded, the album
finally receives the audiophile treatment it deserves with
this 180gram vinyl reissue, pressed at Pallas in Germany

    Body Talk (Speakers Corner)

Just listen to the first thirty seconds of this LP and you know that it's all about the 'Godfather of Soul' - the unique James Brown.

But it's just as obvious that such a great artist as George Benson doesn't just present "Greatest Hits" in a new guise. Six of his own compositions plus one by Donny Hathaway/Gene McDaniels provide the guitarist and singer with a great platform to launch from. He shoots off into orbit, accompanied by first-class guest soloists such as Jon Faddis, Frank Foster, Earl Klugh and Jack DeJohnnette. Ron Carter's bass doesn't boom in the low register but offers a light and airy, yet solid, base.

Body Talk is by no means the declaration of a world-shaking, new and avant-garde jazz. It is, however, a successful blend of jazz, soul and fusion. And when such a superb arranger as Pee Wee Ellis has his finger in the pie - or rather: his pen on the manuscript paper - then one can be sure that the almost 50-minute-long LP is a great success from beginning to end. Finally, one shouldn't forget the helping hand of the producer Creed Taylor, who made a significant contribution to this milestone on the CTI label.

    Musicians:

    • George Benson (guitar, vocal)

    • Frank Foster (tenor saxophone)

    • Gerald Chamberlain, Dick Griffin (trombone)

    • Jon Faddis, John Gatchell, Waymon Reed (fluegel horn, trumpet)

    • Harold Mabern (electric piano)

    • Earl Klugh (guitar)

    • Ron Carter, Gary King (bass)

    • Jack DeJohnette (drums)

    • Mobutu (percussion)

Recording: July 1973 at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (USA), by Rudy Van Gelder

    Production: Creed Taylor

Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Luther's Blues: A Tribute To Luther Allison (Awaiting Repress)

Walter and Luther Allison were fellow Road Warriors.

Ever since Luther's untimely passing in 1997, Walter has wanted to do a tribute album to the memory of Luther. It is, however more than a tribute to Luther's playing and his song-writing; it is a tribute to a way of life that Luther exemplified, and a way of life that Walter knows so well:

To play and sing with everything you have in your body and soul to an audience, with the hope of reaching them, and somehow giving them an unforgettable experience of a live show.

This CD/Vinyl features a beautiful booklet with Walter's emotional story of the last time he saw Luther. Also many photos, and exclusive liner notes written by Luther's son, Bernard Allison, Luther's long-time love and partner Carolyn Rocky Brown, and Luther's song-writing partner and 25 year band member, James Solberg.

Featuring Body And Soul Duet With Tom Waits

Beautiful Mess is Thelonious Monster's fourth full-length album and includes collaborations with some appealing artists from the music industry. One of the most outstanding performances on the album is the duet between lead singer Bob Forest and Tom Waits, called Adios Lounge. Bob is at his best when he is whining as a child and bringing his own voice into a classic like Weakness In Me (Joan Armatrading). Other artists who can be heard on the album are David Pirner & Daniel Murphy from Soul Asylum, both singing on Blood Is Thicker Than Water It's the combination of self-mockery and their punk riffs which sets the tone for the music on the album.

Thelonious Monster was a punk rock band from Los Angeles, USA formed in 1984. Led by singer-songwriter Bob Forrest they recorded five critically acclaimed albums and were a popular live act in the underground clubs of Hollywood. In 2011 the documentary Bob and the Monster was released, which details the life and career of Bob Forrest and featured members of Thelonious Monster.

    Goodbye To Love

    Pressed On Translucent Gold Vinyl

A sultry and sophisticated songbird. The ultra-rare debut and sole output of a wondrous and mysterious vocalist, perfectly accompanied by guitar icon Barney Kessel. An Early Stereo marvel from the original 1959 tapes!

Kessel was a jazz pioneer -- as one of the leading lights of the hard-bop movement, his jazz guitar was legendary, and he was ranked the No. 1 guitarist in Down Beat and Playboy for numerous years. He played with Sonny Rollins and Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald as well as leading his own super-tight group. On albums such as The Poll Winners, Kessel defined the bop style with a jazz power trio, creating a body of work that made him a legend.

Not much is known of Thompson -- even though the record's a long-time crate digger classic, she remains a mystery. But her stunning voice will knock you out -- sounding like the precedent of singers like Karen Carpenter, her no-nonsense, emotion-soaked singing carries marvelously a collection of standards including Stormy Weather and Body And Soul. Kessel's remarkable playing provides a sparkling backing for her vocals. The album has been pressed onto gold vinyl and wrapped in a restored sleeve that captures the beauty of the era.

Claudia Thompson has a perfectly tuned, and wildly dramatic voice. Picture a female Chet Baker; you'll have to hear it to believe it.

    Monk's Dream

    Import

Monk's Dream is the first album jazz musician Thelonious Monk released on Columbia Records. It was recorded in 4 days in autumn 1962 and issued a year later. The Thelonious Monk Quartet consisted of Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Jazz scholars and enthusiasts alike also heralded this combo as the best Monk had been involved with for several years. Although he would perform and record supported by various other musicians, the tight dimensions that these four shared has rarely been equaled in any genre.

On tracks such as Five Spot Blues and Bolivar Blues, Rouse and Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk. Augmenting the six quartet recordings are two solo sides: Just a Gigolo and Body and Soul. Most notable about Monk's solo work is how much he retained the same extreme level of intuition throughout the nearly two decades that separate these recordings from his initial renderings in the late '40s.

    Songs

After the groundswell of adoration for his album debut Life After Defo and the live shows that followed, Deptford Goth returns this Autumn with Songs, his second record of intensely slow-burning gems. Where the former was more affiliated with those seamless blenders of dreamy synth-pop, R&B and soul, Songs adds elements of singer-songwriter tradition to his irresistibly yearning electronica. "It wasn't a conscious decision," says Daniel Woolhouse. "But I've become more accepting of my voice, so it's more prominent now, which led to structuring the songs in a more classic way. I also wanted people to hear the lyrics. It's a process of being more upfront and honest."

Songs' mood is still downbeat but tracks such 'Two Hearts' as 'The Lovers' would suggest he's found more happiness in his life. "Life After Defo had bits of hope hidden inside but this one's definitely more joyous," Daniel agrees. "Instead of closing down I'm opening up and feeling more at peace with myself about certain things."

Songs also bears the mark of its origins. Last year, Daniel left his south-east London flat where he recorded and Life After Defo for a place by the sea. "It's pretty peaceful here," he says. "And more space meant I could develop things a bit more."

As if to underline his singular mission, Songs' artwork echoes that of Life After Defo, being by the same artist, Jordan Kasey. "I wanted a continuation. I wanted something figurative, but that resembled a landscape too. It represents to me a connection between the physical self and it's surroundings, which is one of the album's themes." Over 11 chapters, from dark to light and various points in between, Songs is a unique landscape of the mind, body and soul, and one of 2014's most beautiful.

In a 1965 interview with LIFE, Frank Sinatra said: For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business.
He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He's the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more.

And for the past sixty-odd years, Tony has been doing exactly that. With 15 Grammy Awards and a multitude of Gold and Platinum status recordings under his arm, this man sure knows how to work those pipes.

Duets II is another collection of American Songbook standards performed in the best of ways.

Duets II includes collaborations with the best voices of music: Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Norah Jones and k.d. lang grace the recording booth with this legendary singer.
But it is the tragic and premature passing of Amy Winehouse that makes this album truly special; her appearance on the duet 'Body And Soul' is the last known recording of the British songbird, and it is a truly heartrending version of the 1930 jazz classic.

    Natural Elements (Speakers Corner)

In the western world, the word shakti is taken to mean creative intelligence, beauty and strength. Guitar marvel John McLaughlin, who collaborated with the unique Mahavishnu Orchestra to tell the world of his conversion to Hinduism, created music past comparison with Shakti. Despite the frenzy of mass oriental pilgrimages, it was still unusual that McLaughlin's ensemble was made up totally of musicians from India.

As the title of the third and last album - Natural Elements - suggests, all the participants work with body and soul and make no use of electronic equipment that was so popular in the Seventies. The very real natural energy, which emanates from the flow of melodies and rhythms from both western and eastern musical sources, fires all the musicians. And it is completely intentional that a cheerful fiddle tune, which might well be heard in the Emerald Isle, is joined by plopping volleys of sound on the tabla, inviting one to dance, or that dampened mariachi jubilation appears to be enveloped in the meditative atmosphere of a temple.

The short, light and cheerful pieces on this LP provide easy listening and offer an ideal insight into the world of Shakti. These natural sounds, far from time and space, are still enjoyed today - as is proved by the presence of a large audience at the concert Remember Shakti, in which John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain celebrated their 40-year spiritual ties.

    Musicians:

    • John McLaughlin (guitar, vocals)

    • L. Shankar (violin, viola, vocals)

    • Zakir Hussain (percussion, vocals)

    • T.H. Vinayakram (percussion, harp, vocals)

Recording: July 1977 at Aquarius Studios, Geneva (Switzerland), by Jean Ristori

    Production: John McLaughlin

The Wonderful World Of Jazz (Pure Pleasure)

There is nothing hurried about this disc. That said, the music is focused and will stretch your mind. Lewis employed masterful melodic improvisers here: Paul Gonsalves, Eric Dolphy, Jim Hall among others. Listen to Body And Soul as it builds powerfully and the soloists explore every possible melodic theme, where the quiet power of these master musicians is almost too much to take. Listen to I Remember Clifford where the players are essentially the MJQ with Jim Hall replacing Milt Jackson. This set swings, but oh-so-elegantly. Just like Mr. Lewis. - S.C.Berry

Whether you're an old-time jazz afficionado or new to the genre, this album is essential. In my opinion, Lewis' lovely solo on Body & Soul makes his version virtually definitive - 15 minutes of bliss. The rest of the album, particularly Afternoon In Paris, is at the same level. Wonderful is the perfect title for this record. - E Barrios

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Begging Please

Body High is set to release Begging Please, the debut solo album from label head Samo Sound Boy. In an unprecedented approach for an album rooted in club culture, Begging Please, is an honest and unguarded story, relatable to many, but a singular achievement in its unique delivery and detail. Citing Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear as a key influence, Samo uses his own distinct language to tell a vivid and personal narrative. Lush synth work, jagged percussion, and hauntingly soulful samples, bring us into his autobiographical account of love slowly breaking down and falling apart. The idea that dance music could be considered one-noted or lacking in depth has never made sense to me. I think the very simple way it builds up and down is so fundamentally reflective of living in the world, Samo said recently. What's dark and brooding can give way to the most ecstatic moments, all because one small thing is added or subtracted. Begging Please is a story about the last couple years of my life, told the best way I know how. Following his collaborative DJ Dodger Stadium LP with Jerome Potter, Samo wrote and recorded Begging Please during the second half of 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

    The Superions (Discontinued)

Formed in Orlando, Florida in 2006, THE SUPERIONS are the most exciting group to hit the music scene since Elvis or Lady GaGa (or Susan Boyle for that matter). FRED SCHNEIDER (B-52s), NOAH BRODIE and DAN MARSHALL were just somewhat normal guys when their bodies, minds, and souls were taken over by alien beings from the planet Superion. Now real talented, they perpetrated magic with their first digital release, Totally Nude Island on October 31, 2008. Take soft tradewinds, a healthy dose of tropical passion, and a deadly volcano and voila!: an instant classic destined to sell millions, or a lot less, was born. Following on the heels of this multi-plat... er, real popular song, The Superions return with the new smash Who Threw That Ham At Me. Destined to be another hit (they hope). Ham is a cautionary tale about the serious crime of shoplifting, set to a bouncy disco beat. Their debut seven-track EP also includes the original version of Totally Nude Island, along with remixes by THE LOLLIGAGS and MARSHAMALLOW COAST, and a Ham remix by CASPER & THE COOKIES. Desmond Blue (Pure Pleasure)

As intended, this album presents alto sax specialist Paul Desmond as never featured before, with the backing of a string orchestra. The record, filled with such beautiful jazz standards as My Funny Valentine, I've Got You Under My Skin, and Body and Soul, is very rich in texture, yet subtle and mellow overall in mood. It's unyielding purpose: to soothe the souls of its listeners. Desmond's style and tone shine with an alluring quality, and the record is filled with melodies that don't fail to stimulate the sophisticated jazz listener. Desmond's melodies are eloquently detailed and charmingly spun in the midst of the string orchestra arranged and conducted by Bob Prince. The legendary Jim Hall is featured as guest guitarist, playing yet another scintillating role and using his classic comping style. Hall is perhaps the most highly respected of all jazz guitarists for his good taste and witty inventiveness. Desmond has always been most familiar to the jazz public for his sweeping scale passages and his seemingly effortless spontaneity during periods of improvisation, although here he is often featured in a more lyrical ballad style on such romantic tunes as My Funny Valentine, Late Lament, and Then I'll Be Tired of You. This album is a highly innovative and meticulously crafted work, reflecting the ongoing success of both Desmond and Hall within the 1960s and the cool jazz period. Both of these musicians spent time working with Dave Brubeck and later lent themselves to many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova projects. The arrangements are extraordinary throughout this collection, including the charming Valentine, which begins with a fantastic Elizabethan flavor. The intro sets up the mood to carry Desmond into the first chorus, which then glides into a 20th century style. The tune I Should Care is »a shimmering debt to Ibert and one of the most imaginative blendings you will ever hear of strings, reeds, French horn and harp,« according to the liner notes. The tone of the album: lush, reflective, thought-provoking, and soul-stirring. This work is quite a plus for any listener and especially those who consider themselves avid fans of Paul Desmond.

    Psychic 9-5 Club

Psychic 9-5 Club marks the beginning of a new chapter for HTRK. It's
an album that looks back on a time of sadness and struggle, and
within that struggle they nd hope and humour and love. It's Jonnine
Standish and Nigel Yang's rst album recorded entirely as a duo-
former band member Sean Stewart died halfway through the
recording of their last LP, 2011's Work (Work, Work).

Though the record is instantly recognisable as HTRK-Standish's vocal
delivery remains central to the band's sound, while the productions
are typically lean and dubby-they've found ample room for
exploration within this framework. Gone are the reverb-soaked guitar
explorations of 2009's Marry Me Tonight and the fuzzy growls that ran
through Work (Work Work). They've been replaced with something
tender, velvety and polished. This is HTRK, but the esh has been
stripped from their sound, throwing the focus on naked arrangements
    and minimalist sound design.

The album was recorded at Blazer Sound Studios in New Mexico with
Excepter's Nathan Corbin, who had previously directed the video clip
for Work (Work Work) cut Bendin. Inviting a third party into their
world was no easy decision, but in Corbin they found a kindred spirit.
The LP was then rened and reworked in Australia at the turn of 2013,
before the nishing touches were applied in New York during the
    summer.

Of all the themes that run through Psychic 9-5 Club, love is the most
central. The word is laced throughout the album in lyrics and titles-
love as a distraction, loving yourself, loving others. Standish's lyrics
explore the complexities of sexuality and the body's reaction to
personal loss, though there's room for wry humour-a constant
through much of the best experimental Australian music of the past
    few decades.

Standish explores her vocal range fully-her husky spoken-word drawl
remains, but we also hear her laugh and sing. Equally, Yang's
    exploratory production techniques-particularly his well-documented
love of dub-are given room to shine. They dip headlong into some of
the things that make humans tick-love, loss and desire-with the
kind of integrity that has marked the band out from day one. Psychic
9-5 Club is truly an album for the body and for the soul.

When Macklemore declares his music is David Bowie meets Kanye sh*t, it's a bit of an oversell on the Bowie side, but then again, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring are also honored as influences during Ten Thousand Hours, the biographical highlight that opens the Seattle rapper's vibrant sophomore release.

These arty name-drops threaten to paint the album as more obscure than it is, but even as glitch electronica and Mad Rad member Buffalo Madonna strange up the breakup number Thin Line, The Heist comes off as instant, alive, and oh so welcoming. Chalk it up to Macklemore's playful and open lyrics (When I was in the third grade/I thought I was gay/Because I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight) or the album's not so secret weapon, Ryan Lewis, the producer who earns his co-billing with a George Martin or Dave Fridmann-sized sense of purpose and an Internet kid's sense of utilizing anything and/or everything. For the music industry takeover Jimmy Iovine with Ab-Soul as guest, Lewis' production is a mix of G-Unit gangster music and a Houston hip-hop trunk rumbler, while the pro-gay marriage highlight Same Love with Mary Lambert is supported by full-bodied piano and the sound of a bittersweet marching band, all of it familiar yet twisted through a laptop with hypnotic loops and catchy hooks coming out. Gold (feeling like 500,000 sold) is joyous and bright mini-electro that feeds the positive side of the soul, while Can't Hold Us comes with an irresistible bounce, both tracks being light, lovely, and in contrast to the numbers that deal with Macklemore's addiction issues and other obstacles.

These two talented young bucks can't be contained, and hearing them offer one memorable, meaty number after another makes for an exciting listen, but this is unfiltered freshness released on Macklemore's own label, so the concepts of restraint and focus take a slight hit, leaving the is-he-Eminem, is-he-Childish Gambino, or is-he-Grieves question with no clear winner. Here, he's a mix of all of the above with some distinctive qualities, and with Lewis putting that kaleidoscope style underneath, The Heist winds up a rich combination of fresh and familiar.

    The Cosmic Scene (Pure Pleasure)

Still riding the success of his triumphant concert at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, Duke Ellington in 1958 decided to reduce his touring orchestra to a nonet dubbed the Spacemen, and recorded this lone project with them for the Columbia label. Perhaps inspired by the first orbiting satellites, Ellington is not taking cues from George Russell or Sun Ra, whose extraterrestrial inspirations led them to even more progressive paths. This large ensemble is playing mostly standards, but the arrangements and solos carve an integrated yet elasticized concept that allows for a more expanded role for the ensemble's trombonists Quentin 'Butter' Jackson, John Sanders, and Britt Woodman, and select soloists. One in the solo spotlight is Clark Terry on flugelhorn exclusively, putting his fabled trumpet aside. The classic material presented includes clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton's features Avalon and Early Autumn, the slinky stripper pole blues version of St. Louis Blues with Ellington's piano taking the lead, and a version of Body & Soul, with tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves completely extrapolating and re-harmonizing the tune. There's a modified Perdido, an animated and perky Midnight Sun that deviates from any other slow and lugubrious version of the ballad, and Jones a real good swinger. There are two originals; the blues bass of Jimmy Woode and the 'bones with plentiful piano from Duke infusing Bass-Ment, and one of the more delightful of all of Ellington's book, the poppin' and boppin' Spacemen, a bright happy horn chart led by Terry that is one of the more distinctive Ellington numbers of this time period. It comes highly recommended.

Gibbard and Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson have remade the first single from Death Cab's 2005 major-label debut, Plans, as moody synth-pop that isn't unlike a higher-gloss cousin of the Postal Service.
