Open BookFred Hersch has long been acclaimed as an exploratory artist, an outspoken activist, an influential educator and a uniquely revelatory and lyrical pianist. As one of the most expressive voices in modern jazz, Hersch has never been shy about letting listeners glimpse his most intimate thoughts and emotions. In September, however, Hersch's fans will be treated to even deeper, more revealing insights into the story of the renowned pianist when he publishes his much-anticipated memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz. As a companion piece, Hersch decided to present an equally direct and vulnerable glimpse into his private musical thoughts with his 11th solo release, Open Book.
The seven pieces on Open Book (set for release via Palmetto Records) offer some of the finest, most unguardedly emotional solo music that Hersch has created in a career unique for its profound poignancy and passion. Recorded in a South Korean concert hall on a superb Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano, the album captures the vital essence of the revelatory adventurousness and intense beauty that have made Hersch one of the most important solo artists in jazz. With more than 40 albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch remarkably continues to discover new areas of inspiration and depths of feeling.
For the last two and a half decades I've been pretty open about who I am, what I like and what I'm dealing with at times, Hersch says. But I've always got to dig deeper, and I thought this might be a chance to make an album that's a window into the kinds of things that I play at home or don't play in public all that much.
The album arrives during a momentous month for Hersch. On September 12, the esteemed publishers Crown Archetype (Penguin Random House) will release Good Things Happen Slowly, Hersch's bravely confessional memoir. The book covers the pianist's meteoric rise in jazz from his sideman days alongside masters like Art Farmer and Joe Henderson to his gradual recognition as one of the most individualistic and innovative artists of his generation, a ten-time Grammy Award nominee and winner of countless accolades including being named a 2016 Doris Duke Artist as well as the same year's Jazz Journalists Association Pianist of the Year. But it also frankly reveals his story as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician, tracing his path through hedonistic post-Stonewall New York City to the dramatic two-month medically induced coma in 2007 from which he emerged to make some of the most stunning and captivating music of his career.
Later that month Hersch will reprise his ambitious Leaves of Grass full-evening piece at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room, the first time the song cycle has been performed in New York City since 2005. Vocalists Kurt Elling and Kate McGarry will reprise their roles from the original project, which sets the verse of American bard Walt Whitman. The legendary poet's timeless ode to the miracle of nature and openhearted love of all beings seems especially vital in our present socio-political moment.
The centerpiece of Open Book, and the spark that ignited the album, is the nearly 20-minute improvisation Through the Forest. Unique in Hersch's extensive discography, the stream-of-consciousness gem is a miniature masterpiece of narrative development, a compelling journey through an abstract, glimmering landscape, revealing that in his early 60s Hersch continues to take creative risks and daunting inventive leaps.
The creation of Through the Forest was as unplanned and spontaneous as the music itself. In Seoul for a pair of solo concerts during a break in a tour of Asia with his esteemed trio, Hersch overslept during an after-breakfast nap and rushed to take the stage at JCC Art Center Concert Hall for his afternoon performance. The titular forest is, in part, a jetlag and coffee-fueled dreamscape through which Hersch wanders, applying his vivid powers of observation to unusual terrain. I was a little groggy, my defenses were down, and rather than fight it I just gave in to it, Hersch recalls. I'd never really done anything of that length in public where I had no agenda and was able to stay in that zone for such an extended period of time. I realized it was something special, something different that might be the core of an album.
Through the Forest became the leaping-off point for an album intended to be singularly divulgent and reflective. A few months later, Hersch returned to the same hall and recorded the remainder of Open Book alone in the empty venue (with the exception of Benny Golson's classic Whisper Not, taken from a concert during that return engagement).
The album opens with the stark musings of The Orb, taken from Hersch's autobiographical music-theater piece My Coma Dreams. A love letter to Hersch's longtime partner, AIDS activist Scott Morgan, The Orb is the final dream depicted in the show, and in this solo rendition becomes a nakedly heartfelt outpouring of raw but tender emotion. The mood then takes a turn for the playful and swinging on Whisper Not, a longtime staple of Hersch's repertoire that here becomes a vibrant, virtuoso marathon of thematic exploration.
The piece also serves as an ideal mirror to the album's other composition from the pen of a jazz icon, Thelonious Monk's Eronel. Hersch has long been recognized as one of the premier interpreters of the Monk songbook, but despite including one of the iconic composer's pieces in every one of his sets for most of his career, Hersch had never tackled this particular tune, co-written by pianist Sadik Hakim. Monk's original stride-inflected lines come in for a dizzying array of variations in Hersch's endlessly imaginative take.
The music of Brazil has also been a constant in Hersch's career, in particular the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, the subject of one of the pianist's earlier solo efforts, 2009's Fred Hersch Plays Jobim. Picture in Black and White is a new addition to that repertoire, majestically transformed from a bossa nova feel to a crystalline hybrid with Chopin's last nocturne. On the other side of Through the Forest in the album's symmetrical structure comes Hersch's own classical-flavored Plainsong, a spare, lyrical piece composed in the bucolic setting of the MacDowell Colony, the inspirational artists' retreat in rural New Hampshire.
Open Book ends on a meaningful ellipsis, Billy Joel's moving And So It Goes. In title alone it's an apt conclusion, suggesting an embrace of life as lived and hinting at its open-ended continuation. The full lyrics, which Hersch has performed in duo settings with singers including frequent collaborator Kate McGarry, remain unspoken here but obviously deeply felt in every note. I connect with the sentiment of the words, Hersch says, and it felt like a good benediction to the whole album.1. The Orb

Personal LifeOver the course of seven years and four LP's, The Thermals have tackled religion, politics, and death with no small amount of passion and fervor. With their fifth LP, Personal Life, the band has battled (and perhaps even conquered!) the deepest and darkest of all popular art themes: love. The album amounts to the indie-rock equivalent of a brilliant but ultimately doomed love affair.
Personal Life is something of a retro-technical achievement. Producer Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara) recorded The Thermals the same way in which he produced their 2004 LP Fuckin' A. The sonic care Walla gave to Personal Life assures an enjoyable listen for audiophiles as the vinyl was mastered straight from tape.1. I'm Gonna Change Your Life

Secret LifeToronto duo Moon King have crafted a raw, rapturous and emotional new record, which documents their ascent from an intimate conceptual project into a powerful live band. A first preview of the record comes with the chugging propulsion, soaring harmonies and cosmic haze of album opener 'Roswell'.
In 2013, Moon King, made up of songwriter Daniel Benjamin and singer/guitarist Maddy Wilde, played over 100 shows to support a pair of EPs, Obsession I and II, which were released on Fucked Up's One Big Silence label in North America and Tough Love in UK/Europe. After a year spent on the road, it became evident they should capture the energy of their live show while it was fresh. Following a performance at Iceland Airwaves, Daniel & Maddy relocated to a cottage in northern Ontario to record the album with a group of Toronto music scene luminaries, all of whom had played in various incarnations of the live band.
Most of the tracks on the album were recorded live off the floor, with little except the vocals added, put to tape by live sound engineer Noah Giffin (Owen Pallett, Austra, Diana). Though only five days of recording were booked, an ice storm prevented them from leaving, resulting in an extra couple of days work. The record was then mixed in New York with Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra/Blouse.
The album's production introduces further nuance to the wall-of-sound approach of the EPs, stripping back dense layers to unearth spellbinding vocals and melodies. Daniel's lyrics focus on catharsis and the weight of emotional trauma, as well as dealing with the self-doubt that stands in the way of recovery.
Frequent show-opener "Apocalypse" begins with the confession "somehow I feel no release when I'm alone with anyone else / somehow I fall to pieces when I wake up to nothing where you should be" and builds intensity and speed until overflowing in a rush of noise, an oddly structured pop song with no repeating sections. "It's impossible / you've been run through with fear / love's a landfill / just another burning spear" chants the soaring chorus of 'Impossible'. The ultimatum at the climax of "Golden Age" - "all I want is to be wanted" channels an honest and tangible fear not common in today's pop landscape.
This sense of loss and longing permeates the album throughout, each song carrying with it both a weight and a sense of urgency.1. Roswell

A beautifully recorded session of top quality blues performed by masters of their art. On paper it may look like a slightly odd coupling of KC shouter with a Chicago blues band. The results confirm that Jimmy Witherspoon is a blues singer full of passion and throughout this session all the musicians compliment each other admirably. A beautiful slab of music.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Night Life

A Permeable LifeSinger-songwriter Carrie Newcomer is releasing her twelfth
studio recording this spring, A Permeable Life, produced and
engineered by Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Over the
Rhine, Willy Nelson, Lily & Madeleine). Newcomer is simultaneously
releasing a companion book, A Permeable Life: Poems and
Essays. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with
her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet
spiritual view of the world. As in the work of poets Mary
Oliver and Wendell Berry, Newcomer's songs are based in
the ordinary, and infused with images from the natural world.
"A Permeable Life is about what presses out from the heart,
what comes in at a slant and what shimmers below the
surface of things," Newcomer says. "To live permeably is to
be open-hearted and audacious, to risk showing up as our
truest self, and embracing a willingness to be astonished."
On this album, Newcomer's signature deep voice-which the Austin American-Statesman called "as rich
as Godiva chocolate"-takes on a quiet conversational tone, close and intimate. Open and elegant arrangements
showcase lyrics that balance introspection and interior monologue with love and fascination for the shared
human story. The concept of this album was creating a musical framework as intimate and elegant as the songs
themselves. Each individual part have clarity and beauty, tting perfectly together like the gears of a ne clock,
and yet uid and never ridged or contained but remaining open and seemingly effortless. Newcomer states, "We
wanted this album to be very intimate. We wanted the listener to feel very close as if in conversation with me.
The vocals on this album were sung as if I were sitting at the kitchen table with the listener."
In "Every Little Bit of It," Newcomer delights in the small experiences that give our life meaning, and the
importance of embracing these moments while we can "drain the glass drink it down, every moment of this,
every little bit of it." In "A Light in the Window," she reects on the feeling of seeing a light in the window at a
distance. We don't know what the next threshold will bring, and yet there is always a whisper, a light in the
distance giving us hope and encouragement. In "Writing You a Letter," Newcomer describes the process of
traveling with an open heart, and how it will inevitably change us: "Every place I go leaves it's own tattoo." But
she also knows that we make impressions when we leave: "That's how it is laying stone on stone, building little
altars by the side of the road." "The Ten O'clock Line" and "Abide" (co-written with author Parker J. Palmer),
explore themes of loss and new thresholds, musing on the possibility that what may look like a hole in one's
life, may be only a space. In "Visitation," Newcomer describes the experience of how memories do not arrive in
a linear fashion, but wash over us throughout the day. In the haunting "Thank You Good Night" she describes
the evolution of a prayer of gratitude. "A Room at the Table" is an anthem for a new diverse world where she
writes "This is how it all begins, let us sing the new world in," calling us to allow this troubled world to
transform us and move us to action. In "An Empty Chair" she explores one woman's story in the wake of
unexpected gun violence. And "Forever Ray" and "Don't Put Me On Hold" reect Newcomer's mischievous
humor.1. Every Little Bit of It

Johnny Hartman's next-to-last album (he made a record for Audiophile 12 days later) finds the 57-year-old singer still in prime form. His rich baritone voice is joined by a sextet also including Frank Wess (on tenor and flute), trumpeter Joe Wilder and pianist Billy Taylor.
The ballads range from slow to a brighter medium-tempo pace, and Hartman (particularly on such tunes as Easy Living, Wave and I Could Write a Book) shows that he still had it this late in his career, writes AllMusic. ADAD-NAP-8633xLife Of Agony
A Place Where There's No More PainLife Of Agony emerged from the New York music scene in the early ‚90s with one of the most distinctive
sounds in its genre. Best known for its 1993 metal/crossover debut River Runs Red, the band instantly
built a die-hard, cult following. For over two decades, the group toured relentlessly all over the world,
sharing stages with the biggest names in rock, including Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Foo
Fighters, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. After the much-praised Ugly (1995), LOA opted for a highly
energetic alternative rock approach on Soul Searching Sun (1997) and Broken Valley (2005) - the latter
produced by Greg Fidelman (Slipknot, Metallica). Life of Agony has sold over one million albums to date.
In 2016, LOA signed a deal with Napalm Records to record the group's 5th studio album, titled A Place
Where There's No More Pain. Rolling Stone hailed it as „One of the Most Anticipated Albums of the Year".
The album is produced by Matt Brown & Life Of Agony and mastered by Ted Jensen (Alice in Chains,
Machine Head, Deftones). The drive and intensity these ten blistering new tracks possess, surpass all
expectations that built up in the past 12 years - a cathartic Sturm & Drang experience for the listener that
matches the ferocity of River Runs Red with gut wrenching rock melodies. Raging guitar riffs, heartfelt
lyrics and killer grooves mark the return of LOA's signature sound and turn A Place Where There's No
More Pain into a passionate, soul-searching affair.
The highly emotional lyrics by singer Mina Caputo link all songs by the four-piece together, then and
now: born as Keith Caputo, she had her Transgender coming out in 2011, changed her name, but kept
her inimitable style of writing deeply from the heart. „And I just want to disappear and hide," she sings
and shines a light on the path of all lost souls - while steadily walking her own. „Many of our fans have
told us over the years that sharing our personal struggles has been cathartic for them in healing the pain
in their own lives. That uplifting energy we share at the shows, gives us hope that there's light at the end
of the tunnel. And for us and hopefully our fans, that short time when we're all together is a place where
there's no more pain."1. Meet My Maker

In the summer of 2013 he embarked on a life-changing, cross-country journey, moving from his native city of Birmingham, AL to the Pacific Northwest town of Bellingham, WA. Russell documented his trip, capturing the back roads, ghost towns, national parks and historical sites of America with stunning photos of everything he saw.
"Continental Obscura: From Birmingham to Bellingham" will also include an exclusive 7" vinyl record featuring rare unreleased B-sides from Manchester Orchestra and Minus the Bear, two bands that Russell has shot extensively over the last several years.
Ryan is one of those rare photographers that can truly put you at ease while he takes superb and entirely honest photos," says Cory Murchy of Minus the Bear. "A master at capturing the most fleeting and candid of moments, we always look forward to working with him so we were extremely honored to be asked to be apart of this project.1. No EnergyAs a robust rock underground got swallowed alive by the
Major Label Industrial Complex, the very autonomous
Unwound-Olympia, Washington's Great Noise Hope-toed the troublesome line between pay check and Check
Engine light. Captured in the gaps of a ruthless touring
schedule, defining fourth and fifth albums The Future
of What and Repetition were issued in the back-to-back
springs of 1995 and '96. Both find the band severing their
post-hardcore roots, for gripping detours into Echoplex,
kraut, D&B, and Mingus, as guided by a sun-worn copy of
Book Your Own Fuckin' Life.
No Energy collects both of these 1990s masterworks,
beginning with Justin Trosper's home-made haircut

reanimating bass on "Corpse Pose," and closing in a wall
of Sara Lund crash cymbals on "For Your Entertainment."

Red Colored Vinyl!
Previously Unreleased Performances from January 28, 1981 at Parnell's Seattle, WA!
Cut at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster!
Just in time for what would have been jazz great Art Pepper's 87th birthday (September 1st) and in cooperation with Art's widow, Laurie Pepper and her label, Widow's Taste Music, Omnivore Recordings is pleased to release the first volume in a series of previously unissued live recordings by Art Pepper called Neon Art.
From his early recordings with Stan Kenton's and Shorty Rogers' bands and sessions with Chet Baker, Henry Mancini or Quincy Jones, to his own recordings like classics made for Contemporary and Galaxy Records (The Art Pepper Quartet and Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section) Art Pepper built a legacy of recordings that can only be described as legendary. Thankfully, he also left us a narrative, tracing the history of his life and the roadmap with details of his great recordings in the shape of the book, Straight Life, which Art and Laurie authored together.
The first volume of Neon Art features two tunes drawn from the unissued performances at Parnell's in Seattle, WA on January 28, 1981. Side one features a workout on Art's composition, "Red Car," while side two features "Blues For Blanche," also a Pepper-composed track. Cut at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster and pressed on red vinyl in a see-through jacket, this first volume is aimed at both the longtime Art Pepper aficionado and collector, and to those just coming to know Art's work. It's an entry point into the multifaceted colorful world of Art Pepper. Download card included.1. Red Car

Soup is the second studio album by American rock band Blind Melon, released eight weeks before vocalist Shannon Hoon's fatal drug overdose. The album proved to be a challenging, gripping record that is just as strong and perhaps even more rewarding than their debut album.
2 X 4 is about Hoon's experience at a drug detox, Galaxie is about Hoon's experience with his car, a 1964 Ford Galaxie and Skinned is about serial killer Ed Gein.
The producer of the album, Andy Wallace, is seen on the cover, sipping soup.
In 2005, Soup was ranked number 357 in Rock Hard magazine's book of 'The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.' This album is now available as a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies on yellow vinyl. The records are housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket with the original 4-page Menu booklet.1. Galaxie

All through the brilliant highs and the murky lows of the late '60s and early '70s, Sly & The Family Stone had the globe dancing to the music. The creativity of the mixed-race, mixed-gender, and mixed-genre band shines in this new 77-track, 8 LP box set. This incredible collection showcases the classic hits not just in stereo format, but in the good ol' mono mixes which went missing long ago with the transistor radio, and in unheard early versions, and concert performances.
Also included are gems from Sly Stewarts' pre-Family Stone period, studio outtakes, and potent instrumentals from this archetype of jam bands. With 17 previously unreleased tracks, it's a lot more music than you knew was there - all remastered to hit the pinnacle of sound on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.
This powerful music is accompanied by a stunningly colorful and evocatively detailed 104-page, 12-inch book of rare photographs, posters, picture sleeves, recording documents, vintage ads, and other memorabilia, along with extensive liner notes by Jeff Kaliss (author of Sly's only authorized biography), track-by-track annotations, and a detailed timeline of Sly and The Family's life and career.
The legacy of Sly & The Family Stone persists through four decades of movie and TV soundtracks, commercials, radio playlists, and parties worldwide, and influenced countless makers of rock, funk, jazz, and hip-hop. Here's a chance to take it Higher!LP 1

Throughout his life Rory Gallagher was a great fan of the crime noir genre and much of his work was inspired by the characters and themes found in the cult detective novels of authors such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Examples of Rory's best crime inspired material are central to the Kickback City album, providing the soundtrack to Ian Rankin's newly created novella 'The Lie Factory'. Rory's lyrics and song titles are cleverly woven in to the story.
The unique album Kickback City is completed by the stunning visuals created by illustrator Timothy Truman (DC Comics / First Comics). Also a life-long Rory Gallagher fan, the musician, writer and illustrator has been working in the graphic novel industry since the 80's and is internationally known for his art design for the Grateful Dead.LP 1

Man With The Golden Arm SoundtrackImport
Limited Edition Of 750 Copies On 180-Gram Gold Colored Vinyl
One of the finest jazz soundtracks to come out of the '50s, "The Man With The Golden Arm" is taken from the Otto Preminger film of the same name. Preminger was always very jazz influenced, and on this film he took his chances with Elmer Bernstein. The 1955 movie is about a former heroin addict, Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra). For this movie, Elmer Bernstein composed perhaps the most brilliant jazz score. The drum, Frankie's own instrument, provides the rhythmic basis of the score. In the film's opening it's beat is alternately steady and agitated, just like Frankie's life; meanwhile, the brass screams and whirls out of control, mirroring Frankie's desperation as he runs off in search of one "last" fix1. RelishJoan Osborne's Relish is grounded in blues, soul and gospel. The Kentucky native wields her gritty voice with
personality and forceful presence. Osborne's passion for life oozes from the grooves. There's an uplifting fervor to
her material and delivery, as if every second, every note was being individually savored. Key track One of Us sets the album's optimistic tone. It's a simple, direct statement of faith, honest and unadorned, one framed in a near-perfect chorus.1. St. Teresa
