Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3

Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics (Times They Are a-Changin', Like a Rolling Stone, I Shall Be Released), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals (Idiot Wind). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs (She's Your Lover Now, Blind Willie McTell, Series of Dreams) that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. - Ben Edmonds

Aretha Live At Fillmore West (Speakers Corner)

Live recordings come up with extremely different results: most of them land in the rubbish bin, some of them are available as bootleg copies when a star's career has ended and are passed on conspiratorially from one excited collector to another. Only a very few conserve real spirit and sheer enthusiasm, which no arranger or sound mixer can conjure up in the studio.

But even more sensational was Aretha Franklin's guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary concert hall in San Francisco, which closed down shortly afterwards. Everyone knew who was going to perform, and yet everything was quite different on these three nights in the spring of 1971: her usual show band was left behind in Detroit and she appeared with King Curtis And The Kingpins - one of the most impressive bands around - accompanied by the trailblazers Cornel Dupree (g) and Bernard Purdie (dr). The Memphis Horns, a fantastic horn section, blast away in the background, their keen as a razor backings rising up to soaring heights. From Billy Preston's fingertips on the organ flows an aura of spiritual energy and Ray Charles, who by chance (but how fortuitous!) was among the audience also got his appearance in the telling title Spirit In The Dark. No words need be lost about the queen on the cover. For without the superb albums of the late Sixties, Aretha Franklin would never have become the USA's first sister of soul nor would she have appeared in the Fillmore West.

    Musicians:

Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles (vocals, electric piano)

King Curtis (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)

    Billy Preston (organ)

    Truman Thomas (Electric Piano)

    Cornell Dupree (guitar)

    Jerry Jemmot (bass)

    Bernard Purdie (drums)

    Pancho Morales (conga)

Recording: February 1975 live at Fillmore West, San Francisco, by Ray Thompson

Production: Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Special Deluxe LP-Set On 180-gram Vinyl

Featuring 3 LPs Of 38 Highlights From Dylan's Legendary 1967 Sessions With The Band

Compiled From Meticulously Restored Original Tapes

Includes Exclusive 12x12'' Booklet With Extensive Liner Notes And Rare Photographs

Also Includes All The Tracks On 2 CDs

Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes - many found only recently - this three-LP set includes 38 highlights of Dylan's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band.

Among Bob Dylan's many cultural milestones, the legendary Basement Tapes have long fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics alike. Having transformed music and culture during the early 1960s, Dylan reached unparalleled heights across 1965 and 1966 through the release of three historic albums, the groundbreaking watershed single ''Like A Rolling Stone,'' a controversial and legendary 'electric' performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and wildly polarizing tours of the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Dylan's mercurial rise and prodigious outpouring of work during that decade came to an abrupt halt in July 1966 when he was reported to have been in a serious motorcycle accident in upstate New York.

Recovering from his injuries and away from the public eye for the first time in years, Dylan ensconced himself, along with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and, later, Levon Helm, in the basement of a small house, dubbed ''Big Pink'' by the group, in West Saugerties, New York. This collective, which would come to be known as Bob Dylan and The Band, recorded more than a hundred songs over the next several months including traditional covers, wry and humorous ditties, off-the cuff performances and, most important, dozens of newly-written Bob Dylan songs, including future classics ''I Shall Be Released,'' ''The Mighty Quinn,'' ''This Wheel's On Fire'' and ''You Ain't Going Nowhere.''

When rumors and rare acetates of some of these recordings began surfacing, it created a curiosity strong enough to fuel an entirely new segment of the music business: the bootleg record. In 1969, an album mysteriously titled Great White Wonder began showing up in record shops around the country, and Dylan's music from the summer of 1967 began seeping into the fabric of popular culture, penetrating the souls of music lovers everywhere. With each passing year, more and more fans sought out this rare contraband, desperate to hear this new music from the legendary Bob Dylan.

The actual recordings, however, remained commercially unavailable until 1975, when Columbia Records released a scant 16 of them on The Basement Tapes album (that album also included eight new songs by The Band, without Dylan).

A critical and popular success, The Basement Tapes went Top 10 in the US and UK, with John Rockwell, of The New York Times, calling it ''one of the greatest albums in the history of American popular music,'' Paul Nelson, in Rolling Stone, praising the tracks as ''the hardest, toughest, sweetest, saddest, funniest, wisest songs I know'' and the Washington Post noting that ''...Dylan has to rank as the single greatest artist modern American pop music has produced.'' Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ rating in the Village Voice, where it topped the annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.

    Archive Series Volume No. 1

16 Previously Unreleased Early Home Recordings

Iron And Wine's 'Archive Series Volume No. 1' is the first in a
series - Sam Beam will be gathering otherwise unreleased
home recordings, covers, live sets, and curiosities from his
entire career as Iron And Wine and releasing them on his own
label - Black Cricket Recording Co.

This first release taps into a set of songs created before Sam
was Iron And Wine, when he was making music without the
public in mind. The songs on 'Volume No. 1' came to life at the
same time as those selected for Iron And Wine's debut album,'
The Creek Drank The Cradle' (Sub Pop, 2002, 197K Sales ToDate).
Performed and recorded at home on a 4-track cassette
    - the songs on 'Creek' were only 11 of the many crafted by
Sam prior to his debut. Some of this material has been widely
bootlegged, but has never received a wide-spread or proper
    release.

'Archive Series Volume No. 1' collects 16 of these
unreleased early home recordings for the first time.

This initial chapter in the 'Archive Series' has been digitally
transferred from the original cassettes and packaged in
gatefold artwork featuring the Bird of Paradise Quilt (licensed
from the American Folk Art Museum).

    Second Winter (Awaiting Repress)

In 1969, with several albums already under his belt in a short time like The Progressive Blues Experiment, Johnny Winter headed down south to Nashville and recorded what many believe to be one of his finest albums to date, Second Winter. The album features the original line up of Johnny Winter (vocals/guitars) Edgar Winter (keys and saxophone), Tommy Shannon (bass) and Uncle John Turner (drums). This power quartet laid down some of the finest rock and roll and blues performances ever caught in a studio setting, as well as forever etching the name superstar to Johnny Winters career.

Always an avid audiophile and record collector himself, during the original recording sessions, Johnny believed that all the tracks would sound better if spread out over an extra side, instead of the traditional two sided LP, therefore creating the infamous and probably first three sided rock album in history! He summed it up perfectly We also really liked everything wed done and didnt want to leave any of the songs out. We couldnt honesty give you more, and we didnt want to give you less, so here is exactly what we did in Nashville, no more and no less.

Its no secret that Friday Music has been championing this acclaimed world class artist for years now with his own authorized and top blues charting Live Bootleg Series projects, as well as classic vinyl re-releases from the Columbia and Capitol Records vaults. It is now with great pleasure they announe the continuing Johnny Winter 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his phenomenal earth shaking Second Winter album. Mastered from the original Columbia Records tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI, this incredible limited edition album comes full circle now in its first time audiophile vinyl domain release.

All his greatest hits are here like Johnny B. Goode, Miss Ann, Fast Life Rider and of course his classic interpretation of Bob Dylans scorching Highway 61 Revisited. A visionary always with each and every one of his releases, Johnny Winter put his all into this album which showed an appreciation to his rock and roll heroes like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, his contemporaries like Bob Dylan, while also being a cultural icon in the psychedelic era solely with his Texan slide and unparalleled blues playing, an unforgettable rock voice, and a fan base that just keeps growing every day.

Fellow legend and brother Edgar Winter and the rest of the band truly excel throughout this entire album as well, on tunes sweltering blues workouts like Memory Pain, I Hate Everybody and the incredible jam Hustled Down In Texas.

Friday Music has also included the long out of print original gatefold album cover designed by Tony Lane, as well as the fine photography of Richard Avedon.

    Live at the Old Waldorf

Limited Edition Of 660 Copies On Gold Vinyl

This limited edition double-LP release once again proves that there were very, very few bands in the late '70s that could match the stylistic sweep, musicianly chops, and quality of repertoire wielded by Todd Rundgren & Utopia. This August 5, 1978 set at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco captures the band at the beginning of an extensive U.S. tour, but it had already been a busy year of touring for Todd, as back in May he had assembled an all-star band for residencies at the Bottom Line in New York City and the Roxy in Los Angeles.

Performances from those shows that (along with a portion of an August 23 Utopia date from this tour) comprised the release of the double live LP Back to the Bars in December 1978, and fans of that album will find much to treasure here on this well-recorded release taken from the evening's stereo master tapes. Here you get a chance to hear Utopia back Todd on songs, like "Black and White" and "The Last Ride" (an epic version!), from which they were absent on Back to the Bars, and Live at the Old Waldorf offers such Utopia favorites as "Trapped," "Abandon City," "Back on the Street," and "Gangrene" from 1977's Oops! Wrong Planet that did not appear on Bars. Even more importantly, the band is on fire this night, displaying the rare mixture of note-perfect arrangements and improvisatory verve that made Todd Rundgren & Utopia such a must-see concert draw during the era.

One last note about this release: because Todd was such a dynamic live performer, there have been a series of authorized live "bootlegs" that have come out on CD in recent years, but very few have come out on LP; we have cherry picked what just may be the best of the bunch and put it on double gold vinyl inside a gatefold package limited to 660 copies. It belongs on your shelf right next to your other Rundgren records from the era don't miss it!

Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 35 & 41 (Speakers Corner)

    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 35 K. 385 (Haffner) and 41 K. 551 (Jupiter)

At flea markets in the colourful, pre-digital era, one could occasionally find Bruno Walter's Mozart recordings amongst other 'rarities'. Thin vinyl discs of dubious origin changed hands for a small sum, the cheap bootleg recording gave up the ghost after just a few rounds on the turntable and then vanished into thin air. What remained, however, was a musical impression that - from that moment onwards - influenced what one expected when listening to Mozart's symphonies. Is it the unifying sound with which Walter so harmonically interweaves the slender serenade-like character with the great symphonic idea in the Haffner Symphony? Does the magic of the fast finale, which Mozart wanted »to be played as swiftly as possible«, lie in the brisk tempo or in its clear structure?

An answer to this and other questions is given by this new release of the Symphonies No. 35 and the unique Jupiter. The latter was a linchpin in the history of the genre; it not only terminated and consummated Mozart's creative period but also opened - as the first monumental piece - the way to the great symphonic works of the 19th century. The tightly knit finale in particular, with its sparkling mixture of strict counterpoint and galant style, is highly captivating thanks to its spirited and motivated, yet never overhasty, rendering, which can be enjoyed time and again on this production. And that's guaranteed!

    • The Columbia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter

Recording: January 1959 and February 1960 in Legion Hall, Hollywood (CA)

    Bali High OST

From the '50s up until the early '80s, most surf film
soundtracks were bootlegged straight from the director's
record collection without much thought given to licensing
rights or fees. As was the case with Bali High (1981), a visual
documentation of three years of chasing waves in Indonesia
and Kauai. Filmmaker Stephen Spaulding's original
soundtrack featured favorites from The Rolling Stones, Bob
Marley, and Santana, but as the subculture of surfing grew
commercial traction, Spaulding had to rethink how to legally
sell the film without paying for song rights.

For the 1984 re-release Spaulding sought out the help of
Kauai based musician and producer Michael Sena to
compose an original score that could match the action and
vibe of his previous soundtrack. Unencumbered by the
challenge of interpreting a compilation of various artists into
one fluid body of music, Sena wrote, produced, and
recorded each song himself in just three months.

The resulting 26 tracks lend the film its signature flavor and
cover an impressive variation of genres, featuring moments
of folk, dubby rock, synthesized disco, tropicalia, jazz fusion,
and hyper-tempo power rock. Spaulding and Sena's
collaboration leave us with a layered time capsule in surf
history, and we are proud to present the first issue of this
colorful soundtrack as part of the ongoing Anthology Surf
    Archive series.

Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1: Nommos / Visiting (Awaiting Repress)

Includes Detailed Artwork And Two Essays By Leon

Craig Leon's seminal synthesizer albums Nommos and Visiting are finally re-editioned in
definitive form as the Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1 for RVNG Intl.'s archival
    series.

Issued respectively by John Fahey's Takoma record label in 1980 and Leon's Arbitor
private press in 1982, Nommos and Visiting were the twin brainchildren of studio wizard
Craig Leon. Leon's production was pivotal in realizing the debut recordings by Ramones,
Blondie, Richard Hell and Suicide. While those albums broke ground in new worlds of sound,
Leon's own debut album was arguably, if not literally, more alien.

In 1973 , the Brooklyn Museum hosted a comprehensive collection of sculptures by the
Dogon of the Republic of Mali, a tribe whose religion is based in reveries and recollections
of a visit from an extraterrestrial species they named Nommos. Years after experiencing the
exhibit, Leon remained fascinated by the idea of alien visitors sharing not just stories of their
home-planet, but musical traditions as well. For the classically trained Leon, a puzzle was
presented and a challenge in place: what would music sound like if handed down from an
ancient alien species? And how best to imagine it?

Upon meeting Fahey in the late 70s, Leon pitched the concept as an opportune time to
employ the latest and greatest synthesizer technology available. An avant empathist and
eternally free spirit, Fahey enthusiastically green-lighted the project for his Takoma imprint.
After a secluded week in an Austin, Texas studio with his partner, wife and collaborator
Cassell Webb, Leon returned with a collection of incorporeal melodies generated by the
Oberheim OB-X, Roland JP-4 and Arp 2600 synthesizers propelled by primitive rhythms
programmed on a prototype of Roger Linn's nascent drum-machine, the LM-1.

Issued by Fahey with zero expectation of the same radio airplay Leon accomplished
with his pop productions, Nommos now stands as an innovative example of cosmic-synth
composition that wasn't made for its time or any other. For this edition, Leon has in fact
re-animated Nommos by re-recording the exact audio signals as preserved in the album's
original studio notes. Every patch, tape-delay speed and outboard setting was transcribed
as first scored, materializing the best possible audio from an album whose masters were lost
in major label merger milieu years ago.

Additionally, the re-master of Visiting was supervised firsthand by Leon. As its title
suggests, Visiting materialized in 1982 as a conceptual continuation of Nommos. The
album is in equal measure more improvisatory and constructed than its predecessor. Both
albums were intended to be listened to as a set in the first volume of Leon's Anthology of
Interplanetary Folk Music (the title was an homage to Harry Smith's influential collection of
folk music issued two decades prior). A creative evolutionist, Leon made subtle edits and
compositional additions to both albums to enhance the connectivity and encourage infinite
    interpretation.

While reissues and bootlegs have appeared to relieve the demand for these records,
this collection will stand as the first ever version authorized by Craig Leon himself. The
vinyl edition will be housed in a 2xLP set that includes detailed artwork and two essays by
Leon. The first tells the complete story of the stargazing Dogon people and their prescient
understanding of cosmology. The second details Leon's adventure in creating the Anthology
of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1, an epic story bookended on this side of history as one
    seamless synth classic.
