The EpicFeatures Volumes 1, 2 & 3
The band are all from Los Angeles, mostly South Central, and
its members - who call themselves variously "The Next Step" and the "The West
Coast Get Down" - have been congregating since they were barely teenagers in a backyard
shack in Inglewood. Washington, 32, has known Bruner since he was two. The rest
met, at various stages, by the time they were in high school.
The hours they have put into the music, playing together and practicing alone, total cumulatively
in the tens of thousands."Nothing compares to these guys," says Barbara Sealy,
the former West Coast director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jass, who
has championed Kamasi and his compatriots from the beginning. "I challenge any
group to go out on stage with them and see if they can keep up with it...
Kamasi is at the top of his game, and only getting better." " These young
guys," the rapper Common says, "remind me of why I love music."And the story
The Epic tells, without words but rather through some combination of magic,
mastery, and sheer force of imagination, is the story of Kamasi Washington and the
Next Step and their collective mission: to remove jazz from the shelf of relics
and make it new, unexpected, and dangerous again.LP1

Jaga Jazzist '94-'14It's hard to believe that the Norwegian 8-piece band (founded on the Horntveth triumvirate - Lars, Martin and Line) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, in 2014. Not that there aren't other groups that have lasted as long, but look for a group whose primary composer was just 14 when the whole thing began, find a band where five out of its eight current members were there when everything started in 1994, and scope out one that has managed to remain as stylistically enigmatic and impossible to categorise as... well, you get the idea.
And so we thought it fitting to mark the band's 20th year with a unique, limited edition vinyl box set featuring a special reissue of the landmark album 'A Livingroom Hush' (2004). Also in the box: 2 crisp 12s featuring exclusive reworks based on elements from the album Jaga Jazzist Live with Britten Sinfonia from a stellar cast of remixers Warp Records stalwart Clark; breakbeat scientist Machinedrum; Brainfeeder's sonic dreamweaver Teebs; Mellowdrone founder Jonathan Bates aka Big Black Delta; LA-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, multi-instrumentalist and producer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Cosmogramma, You're Dead, Suite For Ma Dukes, Build An Ark); Werkdiscs' rising star MoirÉ; Hoya:Hoya co-founder Illum Sphere; and Stockholm's Invader Ace.
Extended sleeve notes by John Kelman (All About Jazz) come in a beautiful 24 page booklet with archive photography documenting the rise and rise of this iconic collective.A Livingroom Hush - 180 Gram LP:

Golden SkiesIt speaks volumes for how long we've been waiting for the debut Brainfeeder album from Mono/Poly that when Flying Lotus first got in touch with him about doing something for the label, it was via Myspace. The wait, though, has been worth it. Specializing in a kind of beat-driven cosmic soundscape which he describes as "electronic-classical-alchemy music," Mono/Poly aka Charles Dickerson has drawn on the lessons he's learned from collaborating on last year's Thundercat album as well as the Flash Bang Grenada hip hop project with Busdriver and Nocando, and made a beautifully realized, endlessly expansive record.
From the first orchestral trills of "Winds of Change" you know you're in for something special. As the track builds the listener notices not only the content but also the production chops - this is a record which sounds exactly as big, glossy and up front as its creator wants it to. Rebekah Raff adds scintillating harp work to "Transit to the Gold Planet," but it's the way Dickerson integrates it and builds on it which is really special. "Ra Rise" sounds like sunbathing in space, Niki Randa's abstracted topline vocal warming you right through. Title track, "Golden Skies" uses a looping piano riff reminiscent of Bach, Thelonious Monk and Wu Tang on E, all at once, without sounding like any of them. Add sternum- thrumming bass to that and you know exactly what's what. "Alpha & Omega" does something clever with slowed down d&b licks and tweaked vocal snips. "Empyrean" features Mendee Ichikawa (of the band Free Moral Agents), an ethereal, ghostly presence. "Night Garden" sounds like a drive through the dark streets of an alternate LA. "Euphoria" uses a simple, military-style snare and then twines keyboard lines over it until it's lifted into the sky. Thundercat joins in on last track, "Gamma," and adds some perfectly-judged low-end riffing to anchor Dickerson's keyboard swirls.
Mono/Poly has been a name to watch since his debut, The George Machine, back in 2009. His 2011 EP release for Brainfeeder, Manifestations, was supported by artists as diverse as Radiohead and Erykah Badu and his work on Thundercat's Apocalypse established once and for all the quality of his productions. With Golden Skies he has laid down a marker to any other "beat maker" out there. Because with a genuine producer with this much talent, everyone else needs to aim a little bit higher - up towards the golden skies.1. Winds Of Change

Shobaleader One: D'DemonstreatorThis is by far the most accessible record Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) has ever made. This was not the original intent, but the result is clear. This record will change the way people view Squarepusher. Having been known as a leader and innovator in Drum 'n Bass and various forms of up tempo electronic music for 15 years, Jenkinson was always able to push the boundaries of the genre, but on Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator, he is pushing so far beyond his previous releases it is easy to hear why it might take a few listens to register that this is indeed a Squarepusher record. Vocals, R&B rhythms and heavy synths? These and other un-Squarepusher like elements form what could even be described as baby makin' music. Jenkinson's vast knowledge of rhythm and harmony help to make these songs much more than nu-soul R&B, they are truly an entity unto themselves.1. Plug Me In

MeltAlthough now firmly settled in New York City, Young Magics three members came together through equal helpings of openness and fortuity. In 2010, singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel had left his home continent of Australia to travel across Europe, over to New York, and down through Mexico, all the while creating and recording music with whatever instruments he found along the way. While in Mexico, Emmanuel kept a tight correspondence with fellow Australian expat Michael Italia, who for months had been similarly traveling across Europe and South America with portable recording gear in tow.
They decided to meet up in New York, where their good friend from a few years prior, Indonesian-born vocalist Melati Malay, had been living and making her own recordings. In early 2011, the three friends, who had initially bonded over their broad musical palettes, began recording together and contributing songs to the record, culling influences and finding their own footing among them.
The immediately fruitful collaboration brought forth singles Sparkly, You With Air and Night In The Ocean, all of which were fitting indicators of the bands chameleonic sound, heavily informed by West African rhythms, Brainfeeder hip-hop, UK bass, and '60s psychedelic soul. Young Magics full-length debut, Melt, comprises both of these tracks, as well as their B-sides, and expands on their varied aesthetic, at once electronically sequenced and completely organic. Containing recordings from 10 different countries, the album flaunts new facets at each turn, letting as on Watch For Our Lights rough samples from distant lands coalesce with drum machines and distorted synths.
Night In The Ocean and Jam Karet put soaring synth pads around the higher frequencies while deep kicks keep the songs grounded, allowing Isaac and Melatis vocals to float in synchronicity between. And with its shifting rhythm, open structure, and layers of echoed vocals, closer and highlight, Drawing Down The Moon, hints at crystalline take on UK garage: a last dance from a collection of short stories from around the world. With a sonic mÉlange of vibes on a debut that remains cohesive and distinctly their own, it will be exciting to see where the trios tastes will guide them next.1. Sparkly

Lava Diviner (True Story)Though texturally inspired by early new age records like Iasos' Inter-Dimensional Music, and sample-based collage ventures like Colleen's Everyone Alive Wants Answers, Lava Diviner (Truestory) is reinforced with a robust percussive backbone.
Botany, otherwise known as Spencer Stephenson, never resorts to shallow MPC trickery or contrived mixtape clumsiness. Instead, his proto-new age textures float elegantly atop a primal boom-bap pulse to paint a detailed, rhythmic mural that has the scope of a '70s prog rock epic.
"On Lava Diviner, I wanted to conjure that same headspace that artists like Roger Dean, and even Zdzislaw Beksinski project in their iconic paintings," says Stephenson. "I tried to evoke those grand, colourful, surreal landscapes that are mind-bending yet oddly comforting - sci-fi and epic and holy, all at the same time."
Following 2010's quietly applauded Feeling Today EP, Lava Diviner (Truestory) was created at various Texas locations using a jumble of equipment, from aging desktop computers, samplers, guitars, bells, flutes, tape recorders, turntables, violin playing room-mates and much more besides. Guest vocals from Brainfeeder artist RYAT were added to the mix and the final creation was mastered by Matthewdavid (Leaving Records / Stones Throw).
As the product of a lengthy gestation period, Lava Diviner (Truestory) follows Botany on an intensely personal journey as he makes his way home within himself, returning to his celestial centre.
Loosely a concept album documenting a religious sect that prays for a volcano to erupt, Stephenson set out to make a kind of instrumental storybook of an album, using only the emotional tone that his theme might evoke.
However, by the time the record was finished, it became clear that the emotional tone was really coming from own life, rather than any concept or allegory.
"As work on the record progressed, I began to realize that the musical journey was a direct reflection of my most hard-to-quantify life experiences." he explains. "Lava Diviner is about very real transformations in my being, so it's a true story in that sense I always imagined my first album being like a volcano, with years of pent-up emotion and musical ideas bubbling up to a cathartic release. So, I always knew that symbolism would end up being a part of my first full-length."
The volcanic sense of release is palpable. Lava Diviner (Truestory) easily moves past stale tropes of beat-based music, and brings to life a fully-realized, album-length outpouring of profound human emotion.1. Comm.
