Parking Lot SymphonyTrombone Shorty has announced the release of Parking Lot Symphony, his Blue Note Records debut. The album is a 12-track tour de force produced by Chris Seefried (Fitz and the Tantrums, Andra Day) featuring 10 new original songs along with covers of Allen Toussaint (Here Come The Girls) and The Meters (It Ain't No Use). True to its title, the album contains multitudes of sound-from brass band blare and deep-groove funk to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger - and plenty of emotion all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as he says, Music brings unity.1. SPCO-PUR-10178xThe Dirty Dozen Brass Band
What's Going On (Pure Pleasure)In 2006, exactly a year after Katrina, in the aftermath of a vicious natural disaster that displayed the incompetence of the Crescent City's infrastructure, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Government, they addressed the tragedy in the only way they know how, by re-creating the same kind of bewilderment and anger that Marvin Gaye felt and witnessed in 1971 by issuing their own take on Gaye's classic album What's Goin' On. This is a question that is proved all the more poignant given the efforts of an entire region trying not only to rebuild homes and businesses, but trying to preserve a culture as this recording was released. The Dirty Dozen recruit a number of vocalists to help out on the hinge tunes. The samples of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin's voice in the aftermath of the hurricane usher in the brass slip-sliding along the dark funky overtones of Gaye's signature tune. Guitarists Doug Bossi and Ben Keeler dig into the groove, as does drummer Terence Higgins and keyboardist/producer Anthony Marinelli, as Chuck D raps the refrain in the context of modern history, the disaster, and the ineptitude and even hostility of a government who wages war and ignores domestic problems. It's a news report from the front lines as the horns cut the melody, the harmony, and the deep, steamy funk groove. What's Happening Brother, closes the funk from the inside, turning the groove back in on itself not only playing the rage, but echoing it in the grain of Bettye LaVette's vocal, which dares to spit out the truth with questions and observations in the pain of a first person narrative. The airy arrangement of Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky) is nearly mournful, nostalgic for a more innocent time, but is all the more poignant for that longing. The deep tribal drums Mardi Gras Indian-style, with the skronky saxophones, tight guitar groove, and screaming narrative in Save The Children give way to the smoothness of Gaye's melody. It's a bewildered tune, sad with undercurrents of rage. Ivan Neville's arrangement for God Is Love is a stunner, full of deeply imaginative hues and colors and gospel grooves. G. Love helps out on Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), where the musicality in Gaye's vocal disappears but is supercharged in the horn charts, and Love's vocal sounds confused, displaced, out of time against the instruments. Right On is both militant and celebratory. It's got the funk, but it's also got gospel, rock, and deep soul blaring from the trombones and the repetitive riff in the rest of the brass section. Guru from Gang Starr cuts out from the moody, spectral introduction of Inner City Blues, when Higgins drums play counter to Kirk Joseph's deep blues sousaphone on the bassline. Frustration is everywhere and the horns point fingers to this truth which Guru lays out: that today is the same and perhaps even more so than it was in Gaye's time. The desolation in Gaye's lyric isn't lost but it is fleshed out over the chart so that they are merely the ghosts from the past preaching and exhorting in this new generation. Never has party music sounded so poignant, so utterly damning and hopeful and unbowed. This is the next step in the Homecoming that was a funeral for a friend; this is the aftermath, the sound of angry resurrection coming out with the sun, one where the revolution may be televised but bursts out of the edges in the screen and makes itself known by the medium understood by the people who have to live its realization. With killer grooves that take no prisoners, What's Goin' On is the most fitting tribute yet to Gaye, because not only does it prove the timelessness of the music itself, it echoes that what is indeed goin' on (Gaye's dedication to Detroit as its decline became a reality with no onlookers interested in doing anything) is even more true today than it was in 1971.
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. What's Going On feat. Chuck D

Ya-Ka-MayIn the wake of Hurricane Katrina, various groups offered their musical tributes to the city, but few if any captured the diverse snapshot that is New Orleans. Most tended to view the place as something of a musical museum, while ignoring the town's vibrant and innovative new music: the energetic, highly eroticized, and occasionally gender-bending style of hip hop called bounce. Now Galactic have made what may be the definitive New Orleans tribute with Ya-Ka-May, by recognizing this fundamental truth; that all of the town's seemingly disparate styles like jazz, brass bands and funk as well as the newer bounce/hip hop are intrinsically linked. There is a particular inclusiveness about the place which connects both its people and their music, linking seemingly discordant genres from bounce to jazz, brass bands to rock, gospel to funk. There is also, even in the face of diversity, a sense of infectious fun and joy in these grooves, just as there is on the streets of a city that always knows how to let its hair down.
The album features established legends such as the Rebirth Brass Band, Irma Thomas, Big Chief Bo Dollis, Allen Toussaint and Walter ôWolfmanö Washington with younger artists like Trombone Shorty and Corey Henry, John Boutt?, Josh Cohen and Scully, and Glen David Andrews, as well as groundbreaking new bounce artists like Cheeky Blakk, Big Freedia, Katey Red, and Sissy Nobby.1. REDD-MIS-5819xMisfits Meet The Nutley Brass
Fiend Club LoungeThe two unlikely worlds of punk rock and the martini-sipping lounge scene have collided as the Misfits Meet the Nutley Brass on a hip, swinging collection entitled Fiend Club Lounge.
Officially endorsed by the Misfits and released via their Misfits Records label imprint, Misfits Meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge is a smooth ride through 11 Misfits classics, as performed by Sam Elwitt's Nutley, N.J., bred Nutley Brass.
If Grandpa Munster had a band as a teenager it would have sounded like the Misfits Meet the Nutley Brass! said Misfits founding member Jerry Only. Fun for monsters of all ages.
FranchÉ Coma, original guitarist for the Misfits, added: 'The Misfits meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge' is one of the best renditions of some of the best Misfits songs ever recorded. Any true, and I mean true, musician will appreciate the intricacies of the instrumentations on this record. It takes punk music to a different level. It shows us how anything is possible if you want to make it happen.
The lounge-core tribute to the legendary horror-punk band was envisioned by the project's Producer, John Cafiero, who had been directing a Ramones DVD and was in touch with Elwitt for use of some of his music from The Ramones Songbook as Played by the Nutley Brass. Cafiero had discovered the Nutley Brass back in 1995 and after contacting Elwitt about the Ramones DVD, the concept of Fiend Club Lounge began to develop.
Even legendary composers of the genre like Gert Wilden, Esquivel and the Jaguar God himself, Les Baxter would be proud of these Misfits classics, served with a twist and scientifically proven to soothe your road rage, said Cafiero.
It's supposed to be fun and funny, Elwitt said. It's not supposed to replace or improve on Misfits recordings in any sense. It's supposed to complement them. Think of it as just another way to enhance your overall Misfits experience.1. Last Caress

Working together with such greats as Paul McCartney, Byrds singer Roger McGuinn and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Costello delivers an album that is chok full of variety. Soul, Broadway, Rockabilly, the list of styles goes on and combined result in a great Pop album. His elastic voice tops it o in good fashion. ClaptonCo-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, Clapton features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond-and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti17 years strong, Sexmob are a venerable New York City music institution. The band's four founding members-Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen-defy genre, instead replacing it with their own inimitable musical language. It's fitting then that for their first new album in over seven years, Sexmob would choose to re-imagine the music of Nino Rota. It was Rota's imaginative compositions that set the tone for the surrealist films of the legendary director Federico Fellini. The Italian filmmaker once said, My films, like my life, are summed up in circus, spaghetti, sex, and cinema. Thus accordingly Sexmob have dubbed their tribute, Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti. The 13-track collection is a welcome return to form by these giants of the NYC downtown scene as they dive headlong into Rota's iconic Fellini film melodies. The quartet fearlessly blows apart musical parameters whether steering the arrangements through gutbucket swing or igniting them with New Orleans brass band second-line fervor; dubbing them out into ether or blasting them with punk jazz abandon. These classic themes are the perfect foil for Sexmob's improvisational psychedelia, old world beauty and hypnotic groove.1. Amacord

Love This GiantRecorded over two years largely at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, the album is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word, with Byrne and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) co-writing ten of the album's twelve tracks, and each artist penning one song individually. The album centers around an explosive brass band and is propelled by John Congleton's drum programming!
There was no delineating what the roles were, explains Clark of the recording. It's a collaboration I'm truly proud of. The duo also split lyrical and vocal duties on the record, which despite eschewing a traditional guitar/bass/drums lineup in favor of idiosyncratic horn arrangements, presents itself as infectious and modern hook-laden rock.
Byrne and Clark met in 2009 at the 'Dark Was the Night' benefit at Radio City Music Hall and were approached shortly after by the Housing Works Bookstore to collaborate on a night of music. They began composing remotely, trading song ideas and structures online while Clark toured and it quickly became apparent that they had more than just one night of music in them!!
Byrne performed with Clark at her 'American Songbook' show at Lincoln Center in 2010, and Clark contributed vocals to Byrne's Here Lies Love album, released the same year.1. Who

If The Roses Don't Kill UsIf The Roses Don't Kill Us was made with Grammy-winning producer Dave Sanger (Asleep at the Wheel) and his partners PJ Herrington and Jay Reynolds. They created a relaxed atmosphere in the studio that gaveDenny's vocals a sharp, visceral presence. The album opener, "Happy Sad" sets the stage for all that follows. When Denny strums a minor chord and sings the word "sad," you're pulled into his world of intense melancholy.
The descending melody line and bluesy guitar lines of "God's Height" gives the tune a sense of anguished longing, mitigated by Denny's playful vocal. "I was laughing about the thoughts you get at the end of a relationship when you think you're not good enough, but you know you're going to survive." The churchy B3 organ on "Our Kind of Love" suggests Memphis in the early 60s, a feeling echoed in Denny's crooning. "No matter how bad it seems, we only have this moment. When I wrote, 'It's our love, darlin', and we beat ourselves black and blue,' I was realizing how much I love my dark feelings."
Denny's jubilant vocal dominates "Watch Me Shine" with chiming acoustic guitar and sustained bell-like synthesizer notes adding to the track's righteous mood. "If the Roses Don't Kill Us" is pure country funk with a New Orleans brass band supporting Denny's lively vocal. "Sometimes you have to go crazy to figure out what's important to you," Denny explains. "This is about leaving a relationship when you know the situation isn't really resolved." That ambivalence is the thread that holds the songs on If The Roses Don't Kill Us together. Denny's barely restrained vocals have the ability to describe contradictory feelings with an intensity that gives every word he sings the ring of painful truth. His shimmering, one-of-a-kind voice reaches you on a deep emotional level, touching your heart and soul to deliver his hard won insights with an honesty that makes his singing and songwriting something unique and rare.1 Happy Sad

Christmas PartyChristmas Party is the new holiday album from She & Him, the duo comprised of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Christmas Party is the follow up to their wildly popular A Very She And Him Christmas, and this new collection features guest appearances by Jenny Lewis, The Chapin Sisters and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley.
Christmas Party is replete with holiday favorites - including classics like Darlene Love and Phil Spector's Marshmallow World, Bing Crosby's Mele Kalikimaka and Chuck Berry's Run Run Rudolph. But, Ward and Deschanel also may introduce listeners to the more obscure tracks such as folk-singer Vashti Bunyon's Coldest Night of the Year and the lesser know Sinatra track Christmas Memories. Pop favorites such as Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You and The Chipmunks Christmas Don't Be Late round out the celebration. Throughout the album is She & Him's signature stripped down take on production.
It was the positive experience they had recording their first Christmas record, A Very She & Him Christmas, in 2011 that brought M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel back for another round of holiday cheer. Much like their first Christmas record, She & Him bring an organic and minimalistic approach to their holiday covers. Highly produced classics get stripped down to their most fundamental elements, a style perfectly aligned with their vision. You won't find any accompanying orchestra or full-piece brass bands on Christmas Party. Instead, She & Him rely on friends and family to lend a simple and authentic holiday vibe to this album, one where the guest list speaks for itself.
In the years between the two holiday records, She & Him released Vol. 3, an album of original songs, and kept their affection for covers alive with Classics, a compilation of covers of their favorite standards. Throughout these intervening years and albums, Zooey and Ward gradually culled a new collection of holiday songs to re-interpret, tucking them away like a stack of presents growing under a tree. As Christmas Party comes to a close, the listener can take solace in knowing the door on this gathering is never fully shut. The sing-alongs, the happy accidents, the quiet moments with loved ones - they're all waiting for you whenever you wish to immerse yourself in the splendor of the season. As Ward himself says, Music is one of the purest ways into Christmas.1. All I Want for Christmas Is You

For TrueSince the release of their Grammy-nominated 2010 debut album, Backatown, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have grown creatively while winning hordes of new fans performing nonstop on five continents. Their new Verve Forecast album, For True, offers substantive proof of their explosive growth, further refining the signature sound Troy Trombone Shorty Andrews has dubbed Supafunkrock.
The band: Mike Ballard on bass, Pete Murano on guitar, Joey Peebles on drums, Dwayne Williams on percussion, Dan Oestreicher on baritone sax and Tim McFatter on tenor sax, stirs together old-school New Orleans jazz, funk and soul, laced with hard-rock power chords and hip-hop beats, and they've added some tangy new ingredients on For True as they keep pushing the envelope, exploring new musical territory.
Andrews wrote or co-wrote all 14 tracks on the new album, including collaborating with the legendary Lamont Dozier on Encore, while this time playing as much trumpet as trombone, as well as organ, drums, piano, keys, synth bass and percussion. Indeed, he played every part on the swaying, Latin-tinged Unc. He's also come into his own as a singer, honoring the hallowed legacy of the great soul men of the 1960s and '70s. Like its predecessor, the new album turns on a rare combination of virtuosity and high-energy, party-down intensity.
Among the special guests are longtime NOLA cohorts like Ivan and Cyril Neville (who bring their trademark sound to Nervis); Galactic's Ben Ellman, reprising his producer's role on Backatown (percussion on opener Buckjump, harmonica on Big 12) and Stanton Moore (drumming on Lagniappe Part 1 and Part 2); bounce rapper 5th Ward Weebie and the Rebirth Brass Band (who team up on Buckjump) and Troy's longtime friend Charles Smith (who adds percussion to the same track).
The album also bears the fruit of more recent relationships Lenny Kravitz (who plays bass on Roses), has the longest-standing bond with Andrews, discovering the then-teenage prodigy in 2005 and taking him on tour with his band. Kid Rock (whose vocal is featured on Mrs. Orleans) came out to see Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue at an outdoor show early this year in NOLA, and a month later Troy joined the star onstage at Jazz Fest.
Andrews played with Warren Haynes (whose eruptive solo further heats up Encore) at his annual benefit and again at the guitarist's Mahalia Jackson Theatre all-star event during this year's Jazz Fest. Ledisi (who sings on Then There Was You), met Troy at the 2010 Grammys, later came out to see him in New Orleans and was later featured in a segment for the landmark Red Hot + New Orleans at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, for which Andrews served as musical director. His relationship with Jeff Beck (check out his blistering solo on Do to Me) has also blossomed since the guitar legend came to Troy's late-night post-Jazz Fest show at Tipitina's in 2010.1. Buckjump

NotoriousNotorious is the fourth studio album by the English rock/pop band Duran Duran. Released in November 1986. Produced by the band with Nile Rodgers, the album showcased a new musical direction for the band, emphasizing bass and brass as exemplified by the singles Notorious and Skin Trade
Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. Their reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Each video the group made was distinctive, incorporating a number of cinematic styles to showcase the band as either part of the jet-setting elite (Rio) or as worldly adventurers (Hungry Like the Wolf). Between 1982 and 1984, they rocketed from underground British post-punk sensations to teen idols.
In 1981, Duran Duran became the leaders of the new romantic movement, and media sensations in the British music and mainstream press. The group's popularity increased through its cutting-edge music videos, especially the bizarre, racy clip for Girls on Film. the single became the group's first Top Ten hit, setting the stage for the fall release of its eponymous debut album. Duran Duran reached number three upon its release and stayed in the charts for 118 weeks.LP1

The NativeAn alt-country band with punk roots, Vandoliers formed in 2015, bringing together a group of Dallas-Fort Worth musicians who'd already logged more than a decade in their own punk and folk bands. Together, the guys make a different sound, mixing raw, rough-edged roots music with the focused, fiery storytelling of frontman Joshua Fleming.
We wanted to approach country music from a rock perspective, says Fleming, who filled the band's 2016 debut, Ameri-Kinda, with anthems about hitting the highway, draining beer bottles, rallying against your opponents and, occasionally, dropping acid. Behind him, the guys kick up plenty of fast-moving dust, filling the songs with train beats, gang vocals, blasts of brass and bursts of guitar.
The band takes things up a notch further on its sophomore record, The Native. Rounded out by bassist Mark Moncrieff, drummer Guyton Sanders, fiddler Travis Curry, electric guitarist Dustin Fleming and multi-instrumentalist Cory Graves, Vandoliers pay tribute to Texas by putting their own spin on the state's musical history. The Native is exactly what its title suggests: a tour of the many subgenres that originated in the Lone Star State, from outlaw country to Texas swing, electric blues, and even Tejano. At the same time, it's a twist on those familiar sounds, delivered with a wink of the eye and a bang of the head. It's twang and tattoos, grit and guitars, honky-tonk and horns, Tejano and Telecasters. It's Vandoliers.1. Bluebonnet Highway
