Bright PhoebusThe First Time This 1972 Masterpiece Has Been Widely Available On LP
Remastered From The Original Tapes
Originally released in 1972, Bright Phoebus combined the incredible songwriting of siblings Lal & Mike from folk revival group The Watersons. Moving on from, but not forgetting their folk roots, the album is a post psychedelic collection of songs recorded in a 'loose & anarchic'fashion in Cecil Sharpe House with a folk-rock super group numbering Richard Thompson,Norma Waterson, Maddy Prior, Martin Carthy & Ashley Hutchings. Its release was greeted with derision and its initial pressing of 2000 LPs has long since fallen out of print. Since then the album has become legend, its scarcity not hindering generations of music fans falling for its beguiling atmosphere.
Over the course of four decades, the only means of hearing Lal and Mike Waterson's 1972 folk noir masterpiece had been unofficial CDs, cassettes distributed between fans and, in more recent times, YouTube uploads. And yet, despite the relative obscurity of the record being celebrated, 2000 people had packed London's The Barbican to witness live performance sof these songs by an extended family of Watersons, Carthys and kindred musical spirits. Toofolk to be embraced by the rock world, yet not traditional enough for the folk clubs where performing original material was tantamount to heresy, Bright Phoebus has had to wait an awfully long time for its moment of reappraisal. Almost by stealth, however, that moment seems to have arrived. In a Mojo chart of the 50 greatest British eccentric albums of all time, the album sat proudly among household names such as Kate Bush and Pink Floyd. In 2007, Bright Phoebus was the subject of a BBC Radio 4 documentary and Lal was the subject of a tribute concert which was televised by BBC2. With every passing year, its influence on generations of musicians who had yet to be born when it was released grows ever greater.
This release will be the first time that the album will be widely available. Under the supervision of David Suff (Topic/Fledling) & Mary Waterson (daughter of Lal), the album has been remastered from the original master tapes. It's tempting to say that it was a record ahead of its time, but actually, Bright Phoebus is a record that exists outside of its time. A journey into a world where beauty and hardship are intertwined: a world of pagan sacrifice and stillborn children; a world where fairytale endings are frustrated by the demands of mere survival; where even the visiting magical man passing through the town seems to carry with him a faint air of menace.1. "Hadreas unifies his lyrical and musical ambitions
into the most forthright, ornate, lustrous and 'pop'
moment of his career....sounds like triumph. "
- Pitchfork on "Queen" BEST NEW TRACK
"Mike Hadreas doesn't so much accept the crown
as snatch it out from the air." - DIY
"Immeasurably cathartic.... Perfume Genius has
never sounded this furious and confident."
Over the course of two astonishing albums, Perfume
Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas, cemented
his place as a singer-songwriter of rare frankness,
creating songs that, while achingly emotional, offered
empathy and hope, rather than any judgment or
handwringing. Sparse, gorgeous and with Hadreas'
quavering vocals often only accompanied by piano,
they were uncommonly beautiful tales of a life lived
on the dark side - scarred, brutalised, yet ultimately,
slowly but surely reclaimed.
Too Bright, however, is something else altogether.
Less self-conscious, and less concerned with
storytelling and easily-digested melodies, it is a
brave, bold, unpredictably quixotic exploration
of what Hadreas calls "an underlying rage that
has slowly been growing since ten and has just
begun to bubble up". Recorded with Adrian Utley
of Portishead and featuring John Parish on several
tracks, it is a stunning about-face which brings to
mind audacious career-shift albums like Kate Bush's
The Dreaming or Scott Walker's Tilt, records which
walk the tightrope between pure songwriting and
overt experimentation.1. I Decline

Bright Side Of LifeSanta Barbara, California-based foursome Rebelution play a jamband-tinged blend of reggae and rock that, on the strength of just two self-releases (an EP and a full-length debut, 2007's COURAGE TO GROW), has managed to garner a devoted fan following, not to mention iTunes pick for Best Reggae Album of 2007. The band's follow-up, THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE, builds on a solid foundation of dub-inflected drums and bass, augmented by keyboardist Rory Carey's bright, percussive vamps on B3 organ and guitarist Eric Rachmany's bluesy Santana-esque blasts, particularly on the horn-driven positivity anthem, The Bright Side of Life.1. The Bright SideAustralian artist Lenka has announced her fourth studio album album, "The Bright Side."
Lenka began her artistic career as a Sydney-based television personality and went on to become an accomplished actress in her adolescence through her early adult years. Her musical career began when she became the lead singer of the seminal Australian rock band, Decoder Ring. But, after two albums, Lenka left the band, and moved to America. First, she settled in Los Angeles, and later moved to Brooklyn, New York, as she established herself as a successful recording artist and songwriter.
"The Show", a song on Lenka's first self-titled solo album, was used in the film "Moneyball", along with many other commercials, served to put Lenka on the map in North America, Europe, Asia, and various other places around the world. Additionally, her song "Everything at Once" was used during the Microsoft Windows 8 global commercial, and that only further cemented Lenka's place in modern music. According to a press release, American actor & singer Billy Crystal even sang one of her songs on the 2012 edition of the Academy Awards.
To date, Lenka has released three albums: the aforementioned self-titled "Lenka", her upbeat and infectious sophomore album "Two", and "Shadows", an album of lullabies.
Now, she has announced plans for her fourth album, "The Bright Side".
Lenka worked on "The Bright Side", while also composing music for television and films. And, she's been collaborating with her husband, James Gulliver Hancock, to create visual art and music videos that make her live shows an unusual, but enchanted experience. Their collaborations have also garnered Lenka over a million views on Youtube, according to a press release.

Bright Sunny SouthNonesuch Records releases Sam Amidon's label debut, Bright Sunny South in 2013. Produced by Amidon with his childhood friend and longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman) and legendary English engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Vashti Bunyan, R.E.M.) and recorded in London, the record features a band made up of Bartlett and multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro. Jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler also makes a cameo. Amidon himself not only sings but also plays banjo, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and piano on the album.
Amidon describes Bright Sunny South as a "a lonesome record" and a return to the more spare sound of his 2007 self-recorded debut, But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted: "There was an atmospheric quality to my last two records; those albums are like a garden of sounds," says Amidon, "but this one is more of a journey, a winding path. The band comes rushing in and then they disappear. It comes from more of a darker, internal space."
A longtime admirer of Boys' work, Amidon was particularly enamored of his recordings with Martin Carthy in the 1970s, as well as the Ali Farka TourÉ/Toumani DiabatÉ duet albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch: "Those are so beautiful. I listened to all of that. I loved the sense of documentation, the unadorned quality. Everything sounded so clear."
The Vermont-born and raised, London-based Amidon is known for his reworking of traditional melodies into a new form. In addition to country ballads and shape-note hymns, Bright Sunny South features interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, including Tim McGraw's "My Old Friend" and Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off." The record also includes a version of "Weeping Mary," a shape-note hymn that his parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, had recorded with the Vermont-based Word of Mouth Chorus for Nonesuch Records on the 1977 disc Rivers of Delight: American Folk Hymns from the Sacred Harp Tradition.
Bright Sunny South follows 2010's critically acclaimed I See the Sign, which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his "quirky alchemy contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents" and Pitchfork, which said, "[Amidon's] interpretations are so singular that it stops mattering how (or if) they existed before."
Prior to I See the Sign, which was released on the Iceland-based label Bedroom Community, Amidon released But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted (Plug Research, 2007) and All Is Well (Bedroom Community, 2008). In addition to his solo albums, Amidon has collaborated on performances pieces with musical polymath Nico Muhly, toured as part of Thomas Bartlett's group Doveman and the Brooklyn band Stars Like Fleas, collaborated with Beth Orton, and embarked on a series of live shows with the guitarist Bill Frisell.

The Bright MississippiThrough his work as producer, composer, arranger and consummate session man, New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has truly earned living-legend status. He has collaborated on landmark recordings for such artists as Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, the Meters, the Pointer Sisters and Labelle and released acclaimed albums of his own. The 70 year-old pianist, already a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was the recipient, on the recent Grammy Awards telecast, of the Recording Academy's prestigious Trustee Award, honoring a lifetime in the studio, both behind the scenes and in front of the mic.
On The Bright Mississippi, his Nonesuch debut, Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic rock and roll sides. He salutes Big Easy stars of a previous generation, the jazz greats who, in the early 20th century, built the genre from the ground up and turned the ears of the world to New Orleans. Backed by an all-star combo that sounds like a group of old friends, Toussaint reinterprets classic jazz and blues tunes popularized or written by such New Orleans greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe King Oliver, as well as pieces composed by fellow travelers Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. He accedes the producers chair to trusted friend Joe Henry, who sat behind the board for Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, Nonesuch Records best-selling 2005 benefit release aiding hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. Henry also produced The River In Reverse, Toussaint's 2006 post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello.
Henry assembled a decidedly non-traditional band of backing players for The Bright Mississippi, assuring a fresh take on such venerable tunes as West End Blues, St. James Infirmary, and Dear Old Southland. Joining Toussaint for four days of sessions at Manhattans Avatar Studio were guitarist Marc Ribot (Costello, Tom Waits), bassist David Piltch (k.d. lang), clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant /Alison Krauss, Sam Phillips). Nonesuch label-mates Brad Mehldau (piano) and Joshua Redman (saxophone) stopped by for one tune each.It was wonderful, says Toussaint of these convivial sessions.
Everything is live, of course. This isn't the kind of assembly line music where somebody put the wheels on here and somebody put the top on there. Everything got done at the same time, so everybody fed on each other, their personality and tonality.LP 1

Bright Moments (Pure Pleasure)
Rahsaan Roland Kirk's live club gigs were usually engaging, freewheeling affairs, full of good humor and a fantastically wide range of music. The double album Bright Moments is a near-definitive document of the Kirk live experience, and his greatest album of the '70s. The extroverted Kirk was in his element in front of an audience, always chatting, explaining his concepts, and recounting bits of jazz history. Even if some of his long, jive-talking intros can sound a little dated today, it's clear in the outcome of the music that Kirk fed voraciously off the energy of the room.
Most of the tracks are long (seven minutes or more), demonstrating Kirk's wealth of soloing ideas in a variety of styles (and, naturally, on a variety of instruments). Pedal Up is a jaw-dropping demonstration of Kirk's never-duplicated three-horns-at-once technique, including plenty of unaccompanied passages that simply sound impossible. There's more quintessential Kirk weirdness on Fly Town Nose Blues, which heavily features an instrument called the nose flute, and the title track has a healthy dose of Kirk singing through his (traditional) flute.
His repertoire is typically eclectic: Ellington's Prelude to a Kiss; a groovy Bacharach pop tune in You'll Never Get To Heaven; a lovely version of Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz; and a stomping, exultant New Orleans-style original, Dem Red Beans and Rice. Perhaps the best, however, is an impassioned rendition of the ballad standard If I Loved You, where Kirk's viscerally raw, honking tone hints in a roundabout way at the avant-garde without ever losing its melodic foundation. Bright Moments empties all the major items out of Kirk's bag of tricks, providing a neat microcosm of his talents and displaying a consummate and knowledgeable showman. In short, it's nothing less than a 'tour de force'.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.LP 1

All Things Bright And BeautifulOwl City's self-produced new album, All Things Bright and Beautiful, finds Adam Young expanding his sonic palette as he takes his listeners into a verdant musical dreamland on such tracks as first single Alligator Sky, The Real World and Dreams Don't Turn To Dust.
Throughout the album, Young retains his trademark optimism, letting the listener know that no matter how tough times get, there's always light at the end of the tunnel. I would feel weird if I were to communicate anything other than optimism, because it's just who I am, Young says. It's always been in me to make Owl City a vehicle that sends a hopeful message. Turn On The Bright LightsInterpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.
Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.1.
