The Columbia Singles '67When Mr. Tambourine Man first rumbled out of car radio speakers in 1965, it was a pivotal moment in pop history. With its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day: the birth of folk-rock.
And the Byrds were just getting started. The next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies of Turn, Turn, Turn to the raga-rock of Eight Miles High, from the exotic orchestration of So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star to the Byrds bringing it all back home with My Back Pages.
Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings in their perfectly constructed, radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten rarities, withdrawn singles and, of course, all the original A and B-sides. No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the Byrds in their prime. No one.1. Mr. Tambourine Man

Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of The Girl From Ipanema, Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. And it was just as commercially successful, topping the LP charts and producing its own pop chart hit single in Desafinado. It was the true beginning of the bossa nova craze, and introduced several standards of the genre (including Ary Barroso's Bahia and Antonio Carlos Jobim's Desafinado and Samba de Uma Nota Só [aka One Note Samba]). But above all, Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced -- in harmony and rhythm -- as it is beautiful. Getz and his co-billed partner, guitarist Charlie Byrd -- who was actually responsible for bringing bossa nova records to the U.S. and introducing Getz to the style -- have the perfect touch for bossa nova's delicate, airy texture. For his part, Byrd was one of the first American musicians to master bossa nova's difficult, bubbling syncopations, and his solos are light and lilting. Meanwhile, Getz's playing is superb, simultaneously offering a warm, full tone and a cool control of dynamics; plus, Byrd's gently off-kilter harmonies seem to stimulate Getz's melodic inventiveness even more than usual. But beyond technique, Getz intuitively understands the romanticism and the undercurrent of melancholy inherent in the music, and that's what really made Jazz Samba such a revelatory classic. Absolutely essential for any jazz collection.

SanctuaryNow heavily influenced by the earth-shaking creations of two master musicians -John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar-the Byrds began recording their new single, Eight Miles High and Why, along with tracks for their upcoming album Fifth Dimension at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. Growing more confident by the day in their studio acumen and songwriting skills, the Byrds logged long nights of hypnotic in-studio jamming, then hammered the white-hot magma into songs that will live forever. McGuinn's solos soared as never before, his technique now fusing the familiar, melodic overtones of the Rickenbacker 12-string with a powerfully new staccato dissonance absorbed from the majestic saxophone of John Coltrane. Michael Clarke's drumming never sounded better, his Elvin Jones-like cymbal splashes and rolling-tom thunder driving the band like an atomic generator approaching critical mass. Chris Hillman's swooping bass lines took on a McCartney-esque timbre that filled in every corner of the canvas with bold, melodic strokes. But it was perhaps David Crosby, playing in a brashly percussive way no one had ever heard before from a rhythm guitarist, who best digested and interpreted the Eastern influences of the day: the ragas and talas of Ravi Shankar. Crosby's contribution to Fifth Dimensionwas as outspoken and defiant as the man, himself. Acreative zenith in the Byrds' career, these fascinating sessions deserve closer scrutiny than they've previously been afforded. Alternate instrumental takes and extended experimental workouts give essential insight here into the songs' final versions. Also included are early versions of songs before the addition of any studio sweetening-strings, percussion or sound effects. Tampa, Florida legends the Tropics released a stack of great records in the sixties. But none of those singles is more coveted by garage collectors than their '66 masterpiece, "You Better Move;" a tambourine-bashing, harmonica-wailin,' epic screamer. With its super-threatening lyrics, delivered in a pathologically aggravated state by Tropics lead vocalist Mel Dryer, this record serves as a master class in anger mismanagement. "You Better Move, incidentally, was co-penned by guitarist Buddy Pendergrass and a former Tropic, Dave Burke (who soon appeared on two Standells albums on Tower). B-side "It's You I'll Miss" finds the versatile Tropics in a Byrds bag; with a jangly, expertly-sung original. This Sundazed single places the Tropics at the top of the list of '66 garage bands, from Florida or any corner of the US of A.1. You Better Move

Eight Miles High / Why (Mono)"Eight Miles High" b/w "Why" - The Rare RCA Studios Versions Original Mono Masters!!!
During an action-packed Byrds tour of the UK in August 1965, ideas began to form in Gene Clark's mind for a new song. After germinating for several weeks, he began to put his thoughts on paper during the band's U.S. tour in November 1965.
Traveling from gig to gig, David Crosby's cassettes of Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane provided the tour bus soundtrack. As Clark continued writing the song that would become ''Eight Miles High,'' this exotic music, especially Coltrane's recordings, found their way into the composition. Juxtaposed against lyrical snapshots of London, like ''rain grey town, known for its sound,'' the modal melody created a striking contrast and summoned a surreal, flight-like feeling.
Despite Clark's increasing isolation from the group, it was obvious that ''Eight Miles High'' was a work of major importance and the group promptly made plans to record it. The band entered RCA Studios in Los Angeles on December 22, 1965, to track ''Eight Miles High,'' along with a new Roger McGuinn- David Crosby song ''Why.'' They had worked up an explosive arrangement for the Clark song, adding elements culled from their recent highway listening sessions. The Coltrane influence is especially evident in McGuinn's electric twelve-string solo, inspired by Coltrane's free-form sax lines on ''India.'' Shankar's sitar work is reflected in Chris Hillman's driving bass part, a hypnotic drone against which McGuinn's guitar lines shine in high relief. This Eastern influence also emerges on the high energy ''Why'' with McGuinn creating a sitar-like solo on his guitar while employing non-Western scales. Though not a conscious attempt, these songs were later cited as pioneering examples of raga rock, one of several innovative sub-genres, along with folk rock and country rock that the band explored in their career.
Despite the unqualified artistic success of the RCA sessions, Columbia refused to release the tracks because they had not been recorded in a Columbia-owned studio. The band dutifully re-recorded the two songs at Columbia Studios in Hollywood and these recordings were released as a single and later included in the Fifth Dimension album. However, the band was not fully satisfied with this second attempt, believing that the RCA recordings were better.
This special Sundazed release marks the first use of the recently located original mono mixdown masters. McGuinn has always felt that the first recordings of these songs were more spontaneous. And when asked about the RCA version of ''Eight Miles High'' Crosby declared, ''It was a stunner, it was better, it was stronger. It was the way we wanted it to be.''1. Eight Miles High

Ballad Of Easy Rider (Awaiting Repress)Mastered by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray & Pressed at RTI!
After a huge number of hit singles, top charting albums, concert tours and international television appearances, The Byrds developed into a very influential band along the lines of The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. Spearheaded by their founder Roger McGuinn, The Byrds continued to be a major recording entity and delivered over a dozen of the finest classic rock albums in their decade together of making legendary music.
With the close of the turbulent '60s dawning, The Byrds reunited once again with their original producer Terry Melcher (Mr. Tambourine Man/Turn, Turn, Turn) and delivered the classic Ballad Of Easy Rider. With a whole new audience developing from their college concert tours and the beginning of the powerful FM radio coverage, this masterwork hit the top thirty album charts and brought the band continued acclaim.
The LP consisted of some of their most memorable songs like the aforementioned hippie anthem Ballad of Easy Rider, which also received tons of exposure thanks to being featured as the title song to the Jack Nicholson/Peter Fonda motion picture Easy Rider. The album also treated the listener to some Byrds favorites like Jesus Is Just Alright, Oil In My Lamp, Fido and a revisit to the Bob Dylan catalog with their hit interpretation of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
Featuring the legendary twelve string guitar and lead vocals of Roger McGuinn, the sorely missed lead guitar and vocals of the late great Clarence White, the powerful drum and vocals of Gene Parsons, and the solid bass and vocals of John York, The Byrds' Ballad Of Easy Rider was an all around hit with underground radio, college campuses and traditional radio and retail audiences. This album is consistently recognized as one of the finest efforts in their deep catalog of hit recordings.
In an effort to continually offer consummate music lovers with the greatest rock recordings of all time, Friday Music proudly presents for the first time ever on 180g audiophile vinyl, the anniversary edition of The Byrds classic Ballad Of Easy Rider. Impeccably mastered from the original Columbia Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (The Byrds, Elvis Presley, Deep Purple) at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray, Ballad Of Easy Rider also continues the second release in the extensive The Byrds/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series.

Turn! Turn! Turn! (MONO)The Byrds' second album of 1965 led off with the heroic Los Angeles quintet's second chart-topping single, Turn! Turn! Turn!, the song that placed them squarely on top of the mountain of a U.S. rock scene, feverishly bubbling away in answer to '64's British Invasion. The alchemical number, with lyrics straight out of the Bible's book of Ecclesiastes, was a perfect fit for a growing hippie counter-culture about to turn the world upside down. It Won't Be Long married chiming guitars to thrilling Byrds harmonies, while Lay Down Your Weary Tune and He Was A Friend Of Mine, the latter dedicated to recently assassinated President John F. Kennedy, were shining beacons of folk-rock at its very best. The Times They Are A-Changing is the perfect Dylan-penned anthem for a hip new generation, and Satisfied Mind emits just a sniff of country-rock yet-to-come.
Unavailable for over 40 years, we're proud to present the first ever reissue of this monumental recording in its original, highly-sought-after mono incarnation, cut directly from the original Columbia Recordings analog mono masters, with perfect artwork restoration and meticulously faithful mastering.1. The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and ClarkIn 1965 Missouri-born Gene Clark was riding the crest of unprecedented success and adulation as a member of the Byrds. Anointed as America's answer to the Beatles, the Byrds topped the charts with folk-rock anthems like Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn! Turn! Turn! and Eight Miles High. Gene was front and center as tambourine player, singer and principal songwriter for the group. But in early 1966 he flew the Byrds' coop. A gifted songwriter, expectations ran high for a stellar solo career, but those hopes were dashed when his debut solo album and single both failed to chart. Dropped by Columbia Records the following year, Gene's career remained in limbo until teaming up with banjo player extraordinaire Doug Dillard.
What emerged from a series of informal jam sessions in and around Laurel Canyon was a loose-knit group of pickers seeking to break bluegrass music out of its traditional confines and redefine it in a contemporary country-rock context. The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark is a groundbreaking album that helped define country-rock and set the template not only for that genre but the entire alt-country, Americana and Roots Rock movements of the '90s. Together with future Eagle Bernie Leadon, who co-wrote Train Leaves Here This Morning, with Gene (featured both on the Fantastic Expedition album and later on the Eagels' debut release), the Dillard & Clark merger represents a high-water mark in Gene Clark's impressive anon of recordings and one of the most satisfying periods in his often troubled career.
The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark ranks among a handful of seminal 1960s country-rock experiments. I think we made our mark in country rock, muses Doug Dillard. We didn't make the charts but we sure influenced a lot of people. Billy Joel's debut LP Cold Spring Harbor will always be revered as one of the finest classic early albums from
this superstar singer/songwriter. Released in 1971, Billy had already paid a bunch of dues since the 60's with bands
like The Hassles and Atilla. Already entrenched with a handful of influential radio programmers, Billy Joel took to the
road vigorously to help promote the Cold Spring Harbor album on stations like WNEW in New York and WMMR in Philly,
which eventually helped break Billy to a huge record buying audience. As his nightclub shows became sell outs and
airplay was beginning with his debut LP, Cold Spring Harbor soon became the album which would springboard this
singer/songwriter into an arena artist in a very short time.
Cold Spring Harbor shows this New Yorker's skills in the studio, his stellar vocals, songwriting and amazing
piano artistry. Forty years later these tunes still resonate with his fans as Billy Joel is currently embarking on a very
successful concert tour, and Friday Music is proud to be a part of the celebration with his debut masterwork Cold
As another installment in our exclusive Billy Joel/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series, this first
time impeccably mastered audiophile LP features some of his greatest songs like the brilliant album opener She's
Got a Way, the Beatle-esqe You Can Make Me Free, the stellar instrumental Nocturne, and his classic debut single
Everybody Loves You Now.
The masterwork contains even more of his most loved classics like the stunning Falling of the Rain and the
country flavor of Turn Around featuring Sneaky Pete from The Byrds on pedal steel guitar.

presentation, which features the original LP sized cover art not seen in years, as well as lyrics to all of these great Billy
Joel songs, making this a keepsake for years to come.

Crosby, Stills and NashRanked 259/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are revered for their peerless vocal harmonies, inspired songwriting and musical virtuosity. When the trio first sang together at a friends Laurel Canyon house in 1968, their uncanny harmonic convergence was immediately apparent, and CSN took shape. Each member came to the new venture from other high-profile bands, Crosby from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield and Nash from the Hollies, and together they formed that rarest of musical entities, a supergroup that lived up to its billing.
CSNs stunning 1969 self-titled debut album is one of the true masterpieces of the rock n roll canon. The album made it all the way to #6 on the Billboard charts and delivered two Top 40 Pop singles with Marrakesh Express and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Also features the CSN classics Guinnevere, Wooden Ships, Helplessly Hoping and Long Time Gone.
Crosby, Stills & Nash are a most important part of the brilliant history at Atlantic Records. The uniqueness of their vocal blend, as well as the uniqueness of each solo voice, made them the top vocal group in the world, and they are still today thrilling millions of fans they have accumulated over the years. Worship The SunAllah-Las met while working at Amoeba Music, a key destination for music lovers in Los Angeles. While this experience helped shape their sensibility, their sound was forged in an underground basement where they came together as a band. They began gigging in Los Angeles in 2008, refining their live performance, and finally released their first 7" single Catamaran / Long Journey in 2011. In 2012, they began their relationship with Innovative Leisure, releasing their first self-titled album, Allah-Las, anchored by their second single Tell Me (What's On Your Mind) / Sacred Sands. The release was met with critical acclaim and the band toured extensively in the States and abroad before going back into the studio to record their follow-up.
Allah-Las' second album, Worship The Sun, expands on the sound established by their maiden effort, honing their fusion of West Coast garage rock and roll, Latin percussion and electric folk. As richly textured and timeless as a Southern California beach break, the songs are evocative of Los Angeles' storied past. Beatniks, artists, surfers, nomads. Remnants of a bygone Sunset Strip. Golden tans and cosmic sunsets. One can feel the warmth of the sun, but the band deftly avoids the kitsch so often indulged by lovers of these things. Hints of Byrds, Love, Felt, and those who follow are threaded into the tapestry.
LA's seminal Ferus Gallery - the home of Wallace Berman, Ed Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston - is paid homage in an eponymous instrumental, broadening the scope beyond mere sea, surf, and sand. The lyrics reveal a new maturity; reflections of a band that has grown together through experiences on the road and in the studio. Worship The Sun is at once the perfect soundtrack for the greatest surf film never made and for a golden hour drive through Topanga Canyon. Yet, while grounded in the Southern California experience, the appeal of the album is not limited by locale. It is a teenage symphony to the sun, for all those who know its grace.1. De Vida Voz

You're A Very Lovely WomanAmong folk-rock devotees and power-pop cultists, Emitt Rhodes is a legendary figure with a powerful mystique. The prodigiously talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist first came to prominence as the teenaged leader of The Merry-Go-Round, a unique L.A. baroque folk-rock quartet whose lone 1967 album is now regarded as being in the same class as the debut discs of such 60s contemporaries as the Byrds, Love, the Left Banke and the Buffalo Springfield.
The Merry-Go-Roundwhich also included guitarist Gary Kato, ex-Leaves bassist Bill Rinehart and former Grass Roots drummer Joel Larsonscored an early hit with the infectiously jangly Live. The song (which would be covered in the 80s by the Bangles) became a major regional hit in the Los Angeles area. Lives equally distinctive B-side, Time Will Show the Wiser, was covered the following year by Fairport Convention. The bands second single, the bittersweet, orchestrated Youre a Very Lovely Woman, was an equally impressive achievement.
Those three songs are all featured on Youre a Very Lovely Woman, which offers a consistently intoxicating mix of Beatlesque vocal harmonies, ringing folk-rock guitars, sparkling songcraft and playful baroque and psychedelic touches.
Although The Merry-Go-Round would disband two years after releasing their only LP, the album has gained steadily in notoriety and prestige over the years. Original copies of the album have become rare collectors items, regularly changing hands for exorbitant prices among fans.
Now, Youre a Very Lovely Woman is once again available on vinyl to thrill longtime admirers and new fans alike. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl, the album includes complete, meticulously reproduced original cover art.1. Live
