With the addition of AudioQuest's patented Dielectric-Bias System, Cougar brings a level of low-level clarity and resolution rarely seen at this price. Perfect-Surface Copper+ is the icing on the cake, raising Cougar's performance significantly above Wildcat's.

SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER+ CONDUCTORS (PSC+): Perfect-Surface Copper+ has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal-processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low-distortion PSC+ conductor. PSC+ is manufactured by applying the same exceptional technology to an ultra-pure copper. The resulting sound quality is even more focused and simply less in the way. For over 30 years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by the huge leap in performance made possible with Perfect-Surface Technology. PSC+ simply outperforms all previously available copper metals at any price. All of Cougar's conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Cougar's very clean sound.

FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Cougar uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

DIELECTRIC-BIAS SYSTEM (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1): All insulation slows down the signal on the conductor inside. When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest's DBS creates a strong, stable electrostatic field which saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. This minimizes both energy storage in the insulation and the multiple nonlinear time-delays that occur. Sound appears from a surprisingly black background with unexpected detail and dynamic contrast. The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

CARBON-BASED 2-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Metal and Carbon-Loaded synthetics prevent most RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

TERMINATIONS: Cougar's Cold-Welded Direct-Silver Plated RCA plugs use a proprietary design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability. A combination of these major ingredients, and many more subtle details add up to explain how Cougar can sound so clean, clear and dynamic.

Alexander von Mehren is a 28 year-old Norwegian pianist, songwriter and producer. His self-recorded debut album, AÉropop, was mixed with John McEntire (Stereolab, Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) in Chicago and mastered with Steve Rooke at Abbey Road Studios in London.

The album, featuring contributions from members of The High Llamas, Jaga Jazzist and Orwell, is especially inspired by British, French and Italian library music and soundtracks of the 60s and 70s and is focused primarily on orchestrated alternative
pop music sung in French and English (in addition to instrumental tracks). Alex plays most of the instruments on the album himself.

    Head On The Curb

This vinyl-only release is mid-period Mudhoney at its rawest. Original bass player Matt Lukin is in top form, as is the rest of the classic lineup, blasting out songs and ideas, some of which went on to be studio-fied for their Warner Bros. debut Piece Of Cake, while others got lost to the dark crevices of time until now. Besides the cover of SCTV classic I Hate The Bloody Queen, these recordings have never been released, and represent a sonic assault that is pure Mudhoney. Raw, unabashed, and sometimes downright no-fi. Head On The Curb writes a new chapter into Mudhoneyâs legendary past.

    Piece of Cake

By 1992, Grunge was becoming Rock's new Flavor of the Month, and Mudhoney, being the naturally contrary types that they were, seemed to be getting a bit bored with it. Besides, after several years of roadwork, the band had gained enough speed and precision to allow the Garage Rock and old-school Punk flavors to rise to the surface of their sound.

Recorded and released in 1992, their third album Piece Of Cake was the band's major-label debut. Songs like No End In Sight and Suck You Dry make it clear these guys were always a Punk band at heart, and if you're looking for heaviness, Ritzville and I'm Spun will convince you they hadn't forgotten how to drop that D tuning. Conrad Uno's production is as no-frills as ever, and the short bursts of goofy noise and techno parodies that punctuate the album make it clear Mudhoney were taking themselves (and their career) no more seriously than they ever had.

Several songs on the album such as Suck You Dry, Blinding Sun, and Acetone are still consistently featured in Mudhoney's live setlist.

    Cut With the Cake Knife

Cut With The Cake Knife was recorded by Rose McDowall in 1988 and 1989 following the break up of her group Strawberry Switchblade. Produced with the aid of several musicians in several studios, the album features songs written for the fabled second Strawberry Switchblade album. More importantly, perhaps, it showcases the honest, direct and life-affirming songs of one of the greatest unsung songwriters of the modern pop era at a tumultuous time in her career.

    The Republic

Regardless of the style he is working in, Sam Prekop''s music is always imbued with a sense of wide-eyed discovery and exploration. As the singer and guitarist of The Sea and Cake, Prekop has incorporated elements of traditional styles from around the world, expanding the public perception of what it means to be the leader of a pop band. In recent years, he has also established himself as a modular synthesist, building his instrument meticulously to find the perfect combination of oscillators, sequencers, limiters and filters to create a system that allows him to create sounds that are surprising and inviting. His new album The Republic is his latest synthesizer work, following 2010's Old Punch Card, and showcases Prekop''s talent for creating expressive music through mechanical patterns, repetitions, and chance. Prekop''s innate gifts of melodic turns of phrase that have made him a revered songwriter are transferred into new forms in his synthesizer work, aided by the unpredictable melodic capabilities of analog sequencers, and The Republic is an exciting new chapter in his development as an accomplished synthesist. The first half of The Republic consists of songs that were originally created as a score for a video installation of the same name by David Hartt, which was shown at the David Nolan Gallery in New York. These pieces strike an impressive balance between control and spontaneity, seamlessly transitioning from abstraction and discord into passages of blissful harmonic consonance. The second half of the record consists of some of Prekop''s most warm and inviting synth work yet, built using ideas that worked better on their own as opposed to accompanying the installation. These songs have a sense of forward motion that is often missing in many recordings by modern modular synthesists, which Prekop attributes to his incorporation of the instrument into his writing process for The Sea and Cake's acclaimed 2012 album Runner. The Republic is an entrancing album that moves Prekop''s synthesizer compositions further into the realm of the accessible without abandoning the experimental legacy of the instrument.

    What Am I Doing

Debut Album From This Brooklyn Band

Album Produced By Annabel Alpers Of Bachelorette (Drag City)

Mixed By Adam Cooke (Beach House / Double Dagger)

Lushes are a band born of tensions - between art and math,
order and chaos, planning and chance. You can hear it in their
songs - taut, twitching art-punk that balance anxiety and elation,
often within the space of a few bars. Album opener Harsh glides
along slowly, feeling like a moody and measured art-rock
meditation until you zero in on the words in the chorus: Harsh on
my ears, that's the way I like it. This is push-pull music, songs
that temper the jagged fitfulness of groups like June of 44 and
Slint with the soft-focus sweetness and open-ended song
structures of The Sea & Cake and The Notwist.

That moods so diametrically opposed can peacefully coexist is
part of Lushes mystery and allure. That duality extends to the
group's background. James Ardery and Joel Myers were living in
worlds far removed from music, both working day jobs that
neither of them enjoyed. Their personalities were different -
James was outspoken and gregarious, Joel introverted and
reserved. Their musical backgrounds were different: James grew
up pillaging his father's record collection, getting turned on to
Nirvana and Wu-Tang Clan by his older brother and attending
hardcore shows by pioneering bands like Fugazi at 12 years old.
Joel was formally trained, loving classical music but almost
completely oblivious to rock and pop. The fusion of their disparate
influences is what animates Lushes - the anarchy of punk and
hardcore colliding with the precision of jazz to create music that is
marvelously ordered while still feeling seconds away from
detonation. That tension pulses throughout What Am I Doing, the
group's warring influences making for music that feels brittle and
    vital.

For his eighth studio record Chuck Prophet relocated to Nashville and bedded down for a month at the Alex the Great Recording Studios with producer Brad Jones (Yo La Tengo, Dolly Parton, Josh Rouse). Chuck is joined here by his own band The Mission Express, Todd Roper (of Cake) on drums and The Spinto Band. They even brought in the local Methodist children's church choir for a few tunes. Soap and Water sees him blending his twisted soul-country-rock; a Alex Chilton-meets-Waylon Jennings via Dylan thing, with that Fender Telecaster he's had since his Green On Red days weaving a singular common thread throughout.

In 1979, after the release of his album Recent Songs [MOVLP311], Cohen set out on an international concert tour accompanied by members of the Austin-based Jazz-Rock group Passenger; Field Commander Cohen was compiled in 2000 from recordings of the 1979 tour, and it presents an especially strong argument for Cohen's gifts as a musician.

This is the first ever vinyl release of these live recordings at London's Hammersmith Odeon and Brighton's Dome Theatre. This may well be Cohen's best set of recorded performances as a singer, and having Jennifer Warnes and Sharon Robinson on hand as duet partners is especially rich icing on the cake. While the musicians take care to never intrude upon the songs, they play beautifully, with remarkable taste and skill; they bring out the nuances of these songs with a sure but gentle hand.

It wasn't so long ago that New York-based Japanese duo Cibo Matto (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda) were simply a fun, gimmicky East Village outfit who performed on Casio keyboards and sang almost exclusively about their favorite foods. As such, the band's major-label debut album Viva! La Woman was sugary, but not really substantive--a clear-cut example of Eastern culture endearingly misinterpreting Western music.

But Cibo Matto has come a long way since penning songs like Know Your Chicken, Beef Jerky, and Birthday Cake. Stereotype A is a mature, instrumentally rich album that sees the group break the novelty mold and achieve recognition for compelling songwriting and interesting arrangements. On Stereotype Cibo Matto incorporates such styles as electropop, bossa nova, soul, hip-hop, and butt-waggling funk, expressing a dizzying range of influences that include TLC, Ice Cube, Luscious Jackson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Isaac Hayes. --Jon Wiederhorn

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2, Vocalise, 2 Pieces For 6 Hands, Morceau De Fantaisie

French star pianist Alexandre Tharaud takes on the blockbuster 'Rach 2' concerto in a thrilling performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Russian maestro Alexander Vedernikov. It is coupled with more intimate Rachmaninov for piano six-hands (for which Alexandre is flanked by Alexander Melnikov and Aleksandar Madar) and the icing on the cake: a sublime Vocalise in the original version for voice and piano, with pure-voiced French soprano Sabine Devieilhe.

Alexandre Tharaud's recorded catalogue is large and eclectic, but this is the first time he has devoted an entire album to Russian repertoire - specifically to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov. "I was still quite young when I first played this concerto," explains Tharaud. "I adored it Rachmaninov's virtuosity really appeals to young pianists. Today, of course I'm still enthralled by the concerto's virtuosity, but now I'm more interested in its dark shadows: the sense of despair, of staring into the abyss. My interpretation of Rachmaninov has changed a lot over the years."

Prophet started his wild ride back in 1984, when Green on Red, the
seminal purveyors of American Rock-Roots, plucked him out of
Berkeley, CA and threw him in the van for an eight-year ride, and the
recording of as many albums. Since then Prophet has recorded nine
amazing solo albums and toured and recorded with the likes of
Lucinda Williams, Aimee Mann, Cake, and Jonathan Richman, not to
mention production credits for Warren Zevon, Alejandro Escovedo
and Kelly Willis. Ryan Adams, Solomon Burke and Heart have
recorded his songs, along with a host of others. Prophet has never
been one to rest on his laurels and ride it out.
For his ninth solo album Let Freedom Ring, Chuck reached out to
some musicians and talked them into going down to Mexico City, The
Biggest City in the World (pop. 25 million). Recorded at Estudio 19, a
state-ofthe- art studio (well, circa 1958 state-of-the-art anyway) with
Greg Leisz (Beck, Wilco, Emmylou Harris) coproducing.
Within three days of arriving swine flu broke out and the indignity of
having to wear blue surgical masks just to fit in.
Over the course of the next eight days, the band set about recording
¡Let Freedom Ring!, enduring a poorly timed blackout, shakedowns
by the Policia, and a 6.4 earthquake mid-take - Mexico City might only
be 4 hours away by plane but it might as well have been on the other
side of the moon. But whilst mayhem ensued, the band buckled down
to the task in hand, all set up together in a tight little bamboo lined
room with the amps cranked. Chuck played his Fender Squire, Kelly
Stoltz on backing vocals, Rusty Miller (Jason Lyte‟s band) played
bass while Drummer Ernest Boom Carter turned his sticks into
kindling. Carter played on Springsteen‟s Born To Run - he promptly
quit the E Street Band after they spent 6 months recording it. The
results can be heard from the Clash inspired opener to the power pop
of Let Freedom Ring‟ and the Eddie Cochran infused Good Time
    Crowd‟.

    Mind Control

Mind Control (their third full-length album) is set for release in April 2013, following their two debut London sell-out concerts at The Garage. Within it's blood soaked grooves you will hear shocking tales of bizarre desert ceremonies, religious brainwashing and drug inspired mass slaughter!

Imagine the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges, whilst sitting on murder charges and you may get a glimpse into their fuzzed up world of exploding tube amps and cymbal smashing mayhem. However, this enticing act of musical manipulation is merely the icing upon a very sick cake. Mind Control is a concept album with a theme that makes the acts and intentions of the likes of Charles Manson and Jim Jones seem like petty crimes. What makes Mind Control scarier than most albums is that it doesnt seem as sinister on the surface as it really is deep down within the core of its black acid-drenched world of pain and torture.

The infectious energy surges and pulverizing grooves of Mind Crawler, tell the tale of a man on a mission who has fled from Mount Abraxas after mercilessly murdering all the members of his cult. He rides his motorcycle through the gates of hell and hijacks the weak minds of yet more foolish disciples to join him in his desert hideaway. This is when the real fun and terror truly commences...

There was no escaping the chained-to-the brain hooks and melodies of first single from the album, Poison Apple, but this was merely a trailer for the real hellish delights now to be bestowed upon the earth. Recorded at the legendary Chapel Studios over an autumnal full moon using the finest western electrical technology, engineer Jim Spencer (Bert Jansch, Robert Wyatt) has perfectly captured the bands live sound of saturated fuzz, mind-bending riffs and 60's vocal harmonies. A wider range of influences can be heard from both music and cinema, but their founding principle of presenting light and darkness still remains. Simple and ragged in all its low life glory, Mind Control is the ultimate expose of killer cult madness and mind manipulation.

    Solid Gold Heart

The words and primary voice are those of Jad Fair, that
enduringly idiosyncratic artist revered in discerning pockets of
the global indie rock underground for decades. Danielson's
Daniel Smith has long admired Fair, drawing inspiration from
Half Japanese (the band Fair formed with his brother in the '70s)
on through to his prolific career today. Their discussions of
collaborating finally came to fruition when Joyful Noise
Recordings designated Fair its "Artist In Residence" for 2014
and Danielson was tapped as one of 4 artists (including R. Stevie
Moore; Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake; and Strobe Talbot) to
record separate respective albums with him for a boxed-set
limited release. "Flattered and honored" is how Smith sums up
his feelings about the project -- and grateful to get a game-plan
for what always seemed a complementary pairing.

Sounds Familyre will be doing their own non-limited release of
Solid Gold Heart in June, on CD, digital and gold vinyl. The 11
tracks of sweet collaboration collected under said title sound like
what you might expect, given the respective artists: gleaming
tunes of sincere sing-speak, resplendent with sparkling back-up
vocals and warmly melodic, inventive instrumentation; a
sunshine-bright outlook of positive encouragement to keep
"rockin' on the side of gooood" -- because, after all, "We
deserve chocolate cake/ We deserve apple pie/ Enjoy your life
    ..."

The collaborative process commenced with Fair sending Smith
his unique vocal demos of recited lyrics with articulated mouth-sound musical qualities (some bits remain in the final mixes).
Smith then wrote music for each chosen track, eventually getting
Fair and drummer Gilles Rieder into his Clarksboro, NJ studio
to record their parts during a few hours break from touring.
Aside from Smith's own guitar-playing and singing throughout
the album, there were contributions made by his brothers David
and Andrew on percussion, and sisters Rachel and Megan along
with wife Elin on vocals. Spicing things up at Fair's behest were
members of Texas art-polka band Brave Combo: Carl Finch on
accordion and keys; Jeffrey Barnes on sax and woodwinds; and
Danny O'Brien on trumpet. Bringing things full-circle was
Kramer (Shockabilly, Bongwater, B.A.L.L. et al.) on bass, who
also co-mixed and mastered the album.

The result is a beguiling blend that builds off each participant's
strengths, truly a fresh sum that is greater than its parts. "The
goal was to make 3-minute pop songs, as accessible and fun and
immediate as possible," notes Smith. And that's what you'll
hear, each track an uplifting, mutually enhanced concoction.

Anyone who ever had a Solid Gold Heart -- wouldn't they want
to turn around and share it? Of course they would. Jad Fair and
Danielson are happy to offer up theirs.

First Time Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Their self-effacing name to the contrary, Average White Band was anything but - one of the few white groups to cross the color line and achieve success and credibility playing funk, with their tight, fiery sound also belying their Scottish heritage, evoking American R&B hotbeds like Detroit, Memphis, and Philadelphia instead. Singer/bassist Alan Gorrie, guitarists Hamish Stuart and Onnie McIntyre, tenor saxophonist Malcolm Duncan, keyboardist/saxophonist Roger Ball, and drummer Robbie McIntosh comprised the original Average White Band lineup. Veterans of numerous Scottish soul and jazz groups, they made their debut in 1973 as the opening act at Eric Clapton's Rainbow Theatre comeback gig, soon issuing their debut LP, Show Your Hand, to little notice. After adopting the abbreviated moniker AWB, a year later the band issued their self-titled sophomore effort, topping the American pop charts with the Arif Mardin-produced instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces." The record's mammoth success was nevertheless tempered by the September 23, 1974 death of McIntosh, who died at a Hollywood party after overdosing on heroin.

Ex-Bloodstone drummer Steve Ferrone replaced McIntosh for AWB's third album, 1975's Cut the Cake, which scored a Top Ten hit with its title track as well as two other chart entries, "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" and "School Boy Crush." (Put It Where You Want It, issued later that same year, was simply a retitled and repackaged Show Your Hand.) With 1976's Soul Searching, the group reclaimed the full Average White Band name, scoring their final Top 40 hit with "Queen of My Soul." Following the live Person to Person, they issued Benny & Us, a collaboration with soul legend Ben E. King. However, after subsequent outings, including 1978's Warmer Communications, 1979's Feel No Fret, and 1980's Shine, failed to recapture the energy of AWB's peak, the group dissolved in 1982, with Ferrone later joining Duran Duran and Stuart recording with Paul McCartney. Gorrie, Ball, and McIntyre reformed Average White Band in 1989, tapping vocalist Alex Ligertwood for their comeback effort Aftershock. Oft-sampled by hip-hop producers throughout the 1990s, the group continued touring prior to releasing Soul Tattoo in 1996. The live album, Face to Face, followed three years later.

Chopin - Scherzo No. 3 / Brahms - Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

The debut recording by the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich took the public by the storm all over the world - and the applause has still not subsided! A mere glance at the repertoire shows that she was reaching for the stars. To bring five composers together on an LP of roughly 45 minutes length means nothing other than speaking five different musical languages - and Martha Argerich proves herself a master of them all! The demonic opening of the Scherzo in C sharp minor gives way to an iridiscent dialogue which sings and sparkles beyond compare. The Barcarolle rocks gently along; Prokofiev's Toccata is filled with dynamic force and nervous agitation; Ravel's Jeux d'eau is pensive and introverted, with the water rippling in a circular motion. As a contrast, the two famous Brahms Rhapsodies are performed with passion, impetuosity and occasionally the required heaviness.

This recording is surely one of the brightest candles to burn anew on Deutsche Grammophon's birthday cake.

This record was part of the 3-LP Set "The Conductors" and is now available again.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 Pathetique (Speakers Corner)

Made during the pioneering days of stereo technology when everyone was vying for a piece of the cake, it is hard to believe that this absolutely top-notch recording of Tchaikovsky's "PathÉtique" has never been brought to the ears of music lovers until today. And it is even more unbelievable since it was made by a first-class orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Ferenc Fricsay. The reasons for the non-release are a matter of speculation because those responsible have kept them under their hat.

Not even the man behind the microphone, Werner Wolf, can recall making this recording - although a yellowed recording protocol discloses carefully noted details about the recording venue and date. No wonder that the tapes never got made into records. It is not with a little pride and much joyful anticipation that the announcement can be made: the record is spinning on the turntable at last!

And at long last a gap in Fricsay's repertoire can be closed. Specially recommended: listen to the wonderful clarity of the upper strings which is preserved even in the softest passages.
