    The Thread That Keeps Us

Over the past two decades, a strong sense of place
has shaped the music of CALEXICO, infusing their
albums with a stylistic unpredictability and richness
of texture. While 2015's Edge of the Sun brought
the Tucson-bred band to the Mexico City borough
of Coyoacán, their new full-length The Thread That
Keeps Us mostly came to life in a house studio near
the Northern California coast nicknamed "The Phantom
    Ship" by CALEXICO vocalist/guitarist Joey
    Burns and drummer John Convertino.

Like "End of the World with You," much of The Thread
That Keeps Us captures the anxieties and unease of
living in tumultuous times. While the album draws
a kinetic energy from all that uncertainty, its lyrics
unfold with a literary nuance and sense of setting
and character. "Instead of writing straight-up protest
songs, I want to tell stories," Burns says. Largely
inspired by his wanderings around Northern California
during the album's production, the narratives
embedded in The Thread That Keeps Us reflect on
    displacement, transitory existence, and-in Burns's
words-"returning to your home after being gone for
some time and seeing how things have changed, and
maybe not in the best way."

A Mad And Faithful Telling (Awaiting Repress)

This four-piece multi-instrumental outfit fuses gypsy, Greek, Slavic and mariachi with American punk and folk roots. Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris chose DeVotchKa to score Little Miss Sunshine in 2006, the breakout indie film of the year, garnering four Academy Award nominations and earning DeVotchKa a Grammy nod for Best Soundtrack. Their stage set up is fortified by sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, a bouzouki, upright bass, percussion, trumpet, drums and a Theramin. The band has toured with similar maverick acts such as Calexico and Flogging Molly and will also appeal to fans of Arcade Fire, Neko Case, and David Byrne.

On their first album since scoring the massive indie film hit, as well as their first for the higher-profile indie label Anti Records, Denver's boundary-pushing DeVotchKa stick to their guns. Rather than watering down their blend of Eastern Europe and the American Southwest, A Mad & Faithful Telling actually puts these elements out in front of the trio's more traditional indie-rock side on songs such as the lengthy, eclectic Basso Profundo. Melodramatic ballads like Blessing In Disguise and New World are still the band's stock in trade, and A Mad & Faithful Telling perfectly showcases their quirky but effective mix of influences.

Calexico is a band from Tucson, Arizona that shares a sun-bleached border with many performers and musical styles. Comprised of two core members, Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the Spoke LP. Although that record marked the band's first official output, Joey and John had already been playing together as collaborating members of Arizona mainstays Giant Sand. A wide variety of tours, performances (including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Richard Buckner), as well as their continuing relationship with Giant Sand, allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of musicians and instruments, and the band's sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases.

    Spoke

Vinyl version of Calexico's debut album from 1997. First time on vinyl in North America.

Nearly ten years has passed since we embarked on these initial home recordings on our trusty 8 track reel to reel. These were the first experiments of writing and recording with the newly bought thrift store instrumentation featuring marimba, vibraphone, accordion, cello, mandolin as well as the respective drums, guitar and bass. The songs have a certain lean to them and we appreciated the unusual character that came from this session. We started off minimal and one by one started adding instruments, both John and I as we saw fit, or adding vocals when we needed storyline. Spoke has an organic feel to it. In addition to these songs there are field recordings and outgoing tape machine messages that help to paint the picture of crooked adobe walls and empty downtown streets of Tucson. There's an element of space on this album that unfolds nicely upon the ear and it evokes the kind of late night aesthetic that holds up well to this day.ö - Joey Burns

    Carried To Dust

There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Ever since they were a largely instrumental duo, Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico. Equal parts Sergio Leone, Larry McMurty, Carlos Fuentes and Cormac McCarthy. Naming themselves after a town near the California/Mexico border in honor of this cultural melange, they've spent the eighteen years since they met in Los Angeles mapping out their musical territory.

For Carried To Dust, Calexico called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest output to date. The band lineup that solidified around Feast of Wire (Burns, Convertino, Martin Wenk, Jacob Valenzuela, Paul Niehaus, Volker Zander) is back again, along with a number of guests including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs and Pieta Brown.

The new record is a shining example of Calexico's commitment to constantly redefining exactly who they are. A continued examination of their sources of inspiration, Carried To Dust is the next step in Calexico's ongoing quest of moving forward while never turning its back on the past. A remarkably well-rounded album, Carried To Dust underscores the band's restraint and beauty while showcasing every aspect of the bands' exceptional talents.

    Algiers

22 years and 6 albums since forming as a band, Calexico's latest album Algiers is recognizably classic Calexico but their style has been revitalized and reborn by the experience of recording in New Orleans. Conscious of the cliches that can sometimes afflict acts working in a city with such a strong identity, band members Joey Burns, John Convertino and producer Craig Schumacher chose to avoid the bigger, better known studios in favor of a smaller, more intimate setting. The result of this decision is arguably the most exciting and accessible record Calexico have made.

    Edge Of The Sun

Calexico is no stranger to negotiating borders. For
the better part of two decades, eight albums, and
countless trips around the globe, Joey Burns and
John Convertino have crossed musical barriers with
their band, embracing a multitude of diverse styles.
For Edge of the Sun, the band's keyboardist, Sergio
Mendoza, stepped up to co-write and arrange certain
songs, ultimately co-producing the album along
with Burns, Convertino, and longtime associate
Craig Schumacher: It was Mendoza who suggested
that Calexico physically cross an actual border for a
songwriting retreat to the historic Mexico City borough
    of Coyoacán.

In view of the fresh creative perspective provided
by the band's journey to New Orleans to make its
previous album, Algiers, Edge of the Sun's Mexican origins would seem destined to have a major impact
on the album. The writing here shows Burns and
Convertino's ongoing pursuit of the profound melody,
creating music at once hauntingly accessible
and rich in instrumental texture. With guests including
Sam Beam of Iron and Wine, Ben Bridwell from
Band of Horses, Nick Urata from Devotchka, Carla
Morrison, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, multi-instrumentalists
from the Greek band Takim, as well
as Neko Case, Edge of the Sun weaves a dense tapestry
from its international roster. "Madrid, Nashville,
Tucson, El Paso, Berlin; it's an eclectic mix,"
says Burns. "This album is about pushing through
the blue to brighter days. Calexico has always had
that element of hope, going back and forth between
a positive outlook and embracing desperate or dark
themes that I think we all share."

    I'm Not There (Bob Dylan)

I'm Not There is a meta-biographical film re-imaging the life of Bob Dylan as portrayed by six different actors - Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, and Cate Blanchett - in six different phases of the artists life and career.

The 4LP I'm Not There set features songs from and inspired by this film. The new interpretations of Bob Dylan songs are performed by an eclectic cavalcade of acclaimed and celebrated contemporary musicians including Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Sonic Youth, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Mark Lanegan and many others!

Many of the album's performances include backing from The Million Dollar Bashers, an ensemble created especially for 'Im Not There' by Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo, featuring Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Wilco bassist Nels Cline, guitarist Smokey Hormel, keyboardist John Medeski and long-time Bob Dylan band bassist Tony Garnier. Other tracks on the album feature the alternative-country band Calexico backing up artists.

I'm Not There includes two versions of the enigmatic title track, a new interpretation performed by Sonic Youth and the original Bob Dylan recording, a rare often-bootlegged outtake from The Basement Tapes sessions which has been unavailable on any official release for a long time.

    The Hill

On the 100th anniversary of Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology,
Merge is reissuing the epic it inspired: Richard Buckner's The Hill.

The Hill started in 1996 in The Ranch Olancha Motel, a dusty place near the
mouth of Death Valley, California. Buckner, who was en route to Tucson,
Arizona, to record what would become Devotion & Doubt, stayed a week in a
room with no phone, no television, carrying his guitar, a four-track recorder,
and a copy of Masters' Spoon River Anthology. He tinkered with a few of the
book's poems, put them on a cassette, and forgot about it until an acquaintance
discovered it in his truck four years later. Beset with writer's block and looking
for a distraction, Buckner would find in the tape the spur he needed.

Recorded in Edmonton, Alberta, and Tucson, The Hill converts Spoon River
poems to music. Each page of Spoon River Anthology reads as a final, postmortem
dictum of a different deceased resident-more than 250 of them
now passed-in the fictional Midwestern town of Spoon River. The epitaphs
are important for Buckner because, in death, these people strip the breathing
city of its dishonesty. Each one, from Reuben Pantier to Elizabeth Childers to
Oscar Hummel, is no longer concerned with whispers and pointed fingers that
are often the consequence of a life laid bare for all to see. They're unleashing
    themselves, without fallacy or attachment.

Buckner chooses 18 of these confessions, each given a unique rendering.
Backed by Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino and surveyed with
Buckner's unflagging vocal desperation, Spoon River's residents come back to
life. Like so much of his career, Buckner disappeared into Spoon River and
returns to us with its story

Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and

    Last Ex project.

Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and
Olivier Fairfield, long active in Quebec's experimental/punk scene, though
perhaps best known as core members of Timber Timbre, which spawned the
    Last Ex project.

Constellation knew nothing of this back story when the label received the
Last Ex demos in spring 2014; we just heard a compelling, compact, coherent,
highly evocative instrumental album that kept worming its way into our ears.
By the tenth time someone in the office said Let's play that Last Ex stuff
again - and everyone enthusiastically agreed - it was time to contact the
band. This music belonged in the Constellation catalogue: an instrumental
rock album of superb compositional and melodic sensibility, balancing
minimalism and restraint with atmosphere and tone, bound by a refreshingly
    original approach to production.

Last Ex makes ample use of the electric guitar as both lead instrument and
textural sound source, structuring most of the pieces around deliberate
melodic and contrapuntal deployments of Spaghetti Western twang, while
distressing, degrading and redeploying those sonics through Fairfield's analog
tape-based manipulations. Trottier takes on most of the guitar duties, with
Timbre Timber's Taylor Kirk contributing on a couple of tunes as well. Tight
bursts of trap set rhythms played by Fairfield, and usually captured with just a
couple of microphones, along with consistently excellent basslines laid down
by both Simon and Olivier, propel the album and make this anything but an
ambient listen. Strings appear on several pieces, courtesy Mika Posen (also of
Timber Timbre), in a wide range of textures and treatments.

With its combination of assured lyricism, cinematic guitars, dusky analog
atmospherics and taut percussion, this is a vivid, concise and expressive
instrumental album that sits snugly between fellow label acts Do Make Say
Think and Exhaust on the one hand, Hrsta, Tindersticks and Evangelista on the
other. Fans of early Trans Am, early/mid Tortoise, Calexico and (obviously)
Timbre Timber should appreciate this as a very satisfying grower of an album
    as well. Thanks for listening.

    Mission Bell

Amos Lee has completed the recording of Mission Bell, his fourth album for EMI's Blue Note Records, and his richest and most fully formed album to date. Mission Bell, which was produced by Joey Burns of the acclaimed band Calexico, displays both range and cohesion, an array of emotions unified by Lee's eclectic taste and distinctive vocals.

With a remarkable set of guests including Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Priscilla Ahn, Pieta Brown, and James Gadson, and the musical backing of Calexico, the album marks the arrival of Amos Lee as a mature artist who continues to explore his musical and thematic interests.

For more than a decade, DeVotchKa has melded its influences, from Eastern European wedding bands to Norteno ballads, into an authentic and totally original blend of popular music. The bands haunting, romantic sound evokes timeless images, attracting thousands of fans to their sold-out live shows. DeVotchKas sound has proved particularly attractive to filmmakers, who have used the group's songs to score countless films and commercials, most famously Little Miss Sunshine, for which they received a Grammy nod.

With the release of the band's fifth album, 100 Lovers, the band returns to the epic settings of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) to create a new collection of haunting stories, with songs like The Man From San Sebastian delivering on their intriguing titles with enigmatic lyrics and cinematic soundscapes.

For 100 Lovers, DeVotchKa spent over a year refining their sound, taking multiple trips to the studio to craft twelve new recordings. The final product is the bands strongest album to date, combining the energy and pop verve of How It Ends with the lush arrangements of A Mad and Faithful Telling, filled with songs fans will love, memorable melodies to draw in new listeners, and driving beats that will slip seamlessly into their rousing live sets.

    Ownerless

Comprised of four singers/songwriters (Russell Pollard/J. Soda/Joel Graves/Elijah Thomson), the members of L.A.'s Everest boast some impressive pedigrees, having played with groups like Earlimart, Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, Slydell, Mike Stinson, Great Northern, Alaska!, John Vanderslice and The Watson Twins. Sharing a mutual admiration for each other's respective track records, the four were drawn together by a common desire to make classic-sounding pop songs in the style of earthy bands like Wilco and Calexico.

Produced by Rob Schnapf and Richard Swift, Ownerless builds on the expansive sonic soundscapes the band created on their critically acclaimed debut Ghost Tones and follow-up On Approach. With guitars that range from bright and chiming to tense and meandering, harmonies that are both delicate and pastoral, and Pollard's gentle hazing vocals, it's easy to see why Everest have continued to gain new fans wherever they go, from month-long residences in cities such as Chicago and New York, to tours alongside Neil Young, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Gatefold LP also includes a copy of the full album on CD.

    Works For Tomorrow

Since first hitting the road in a battered Econoline van in the 1980s, Eleventh Dream Day continues to build on their history by moving forward musically, while never forgetting what inspired them. On Works For Tomorrow, core band members Rick Rizzo, Janet Beveridge Bean, Mark Greenberg, and Douglas McCombs are joined by James Elkington (Tweedy, Steve Gunn), marking the first time the band has recorded with a second guitarist since 1994. Elkington's addition has unleashed the band's strengths. The ferocious and visceral interplay between Rizzo and Elkington charge the band with a joyous exuberance that sweeps the listener in for the 43 minutes of Works For Tomorrow. The album also features performances by long time friend Martin Wenk (Calexico) and Chicago stalwart Rich Parenti on horns. Eleventh Dream Day is known for their raw, inexhaustible live performances. They honed the songs on Works For Tomorrow during an extended residency at Chicago's Hideout Club, and the packed, sweaty energy of those shows is unmistakable on this new recording. Drummer and sometime lead vocalist Janet Beveridge Bean breaks free as never before, her vocals igniting the songs with an animalistic urgency, as she furiously propels the songs with pure command from behind the kit. Works For Tomorrow was recorded and mixed by Greenberg at the Loft (Wilco's studio) and Mayfair Recordings. The 10 tracks on the album center on embracing a future which does not succumb to the past, but challenges it in order to adapt and grow. This reframing and understanding of history is keenly stated in the album's title track when Rizzo sings, "You see her, this must be the beginning or the end of whatever that was." From the reimagined, deliberate version of Judy Henske and Jerry Yester's "Snowblind," to the quieter, melodic tracks like "Deep Lakes," Eleventh Dream Day's fiery performances and inventive arrangements make for the most complex and compelling record of their career. Works For Tomorrow finds the band fixed on the road ahead, barreling toward the horizon with the radio turned up -- way, way up.

    Shaken (Out of Stock)

    "...spine-tingling, spectral folk-pop." - NPR MUSIC

Copenhagen, Denmark native Maggie Bjorklund has made a name for herself as an exceptionally gifted pedal steel guitarist/singer/composer, who crafts elements of country, indie rock, film scores, psychedelia, and pop into a stylistically unique blend of roots music. Over the years she has landed coveted touring gigs with Jack White (and performed on his latest album Lazaretto), X's John Doe & Exene Cervenka, Mark Lanegan, Howe Gelb, & Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino to name a few. With the release of her second album Shaken, Bjorklund puts together an A-plus band, consisting of drummer Convertino, cellist Barb Hunter, Jim Barr (Portishead) on bass, John Parish

(PJ Harvey, Sparklehorse) on guitars & production and a featured guest vocal appearance by Kurt Wagner (Lambchop). Written during a time of major personal upheaval, the songwriting here has a profound, cathartic, and purposeful inspiration Shaken is filled with potent memories and emotional out-pouring, translated into dark, warm sonic textures that flow like sepia-tinged lucid dreams, held together with Bjorklund's distorted, ghostly swells and breathy waves of pedal steel.
