    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Hooker 'N Heat (Pure Pleasure)

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots. Sporting a slightly revised personnel with the return of Henry 'Sunflower' Vestine and the incorporation of Antonio 'Tony' de la Barreda on bass, a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra on drums. Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker 'n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson, as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat.

The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill - probably as it was the group's record company that sprung for Hooker 'n Heat - make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic Boogie Chillen No. 2 stretches over 11-and-a-half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler.

    Musicians:

    • John Lee Hooker (guitar, vocal)

    • Alan Wilson (piano, harmonica)

    • Henry Vestine (guitar)

    • Antonio de la Barreda (bass)

    • Adolfo de la Parra (drums)

With five decades as a guitarist and songwriter under his belt including being a member of Canned Heat and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, 1989 was the year he stepped into the spotlight and has gone on to release 22 solo albums in the last 25 years. Still constantly touring, gathering new fans and respected as one of the world's finest rock/blues guitarist there is no stopping Walter as he prepares for a busy year ahead. This will include a brand new album, more live shows and his official biography. Currently being written by Henry Yates and will lift the lid on Walter's hell raising life on the road, and guaranteed to be a page turner of epic proportions.

A lesser artist might rest on such laurels. As Walter Trout powers into his quarter decade as a solo star, there's no whiff of the ennui or creative autopilot that hobbles the later output of most veterans. On the contrary, there's a sense of growing momentum, perhaps even of a little surprise. "It's hard to believe I'm still alive, to be honest," he smiles. "I should have been dead by 30, with the life I was leading. But I still have a career, and at 62, I'm still climbing the ladder, which keeps it exciting, instead of trying to rekindle past glories. I feel like I play with more fire than when I was 25. I'm still reaching, y'know ?"

Of all the American rock bands that embraced the blues in the 1960s, none took their musical mission more seriously than Canned Heat. The California quintet, led by vocalists Alan Blind Owl Wilson and Bob The Bear Hite and featuring the brilliant guitarist Henry Vestine, combined fiery instrumental chops with a vast knowledge of blues history. Canned Heat quickly carved out a unique niche in that heady era, making high-profile appearances at Woodstock and other notable rock festivals, and managing to break into the pop singles charts without diluting their sound.

Canned Heat's eponymous 1967 debut LP, released shortly after their attention-getting performance at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, introduced the band's audacious synthesis of blues tradition and electrified boogie. The 11-song album features raw, fiercely soulful interpretations of material by such blues masters as Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, powered by Wilson and Hite's contrasting vocal styles and Vestine's explosive fretwork. The result is one of the most distinctive and dynamic blues-rock recordings of the '60s, and the album that launched Canned Heat's five-decade musical journey.

This new vinyl edition of this landmark debut effort has been sourced from the original mono masters and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and features a meticulous reproduction of the LP's original cover art.

Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions (Pure Pleasure)

House's recording session ran over a few days and saw the studio set up like a small club with an invited audience. I remember John (Hammond) running around crazed, as was Son's manager, Dick Waterman (a man to whom Son owed everything). Al Wilson of Canned Heat was sat alongside Son, and once the recording started occasionally played harp and guitar. He appeared to have a decidedly calming influence on House, who throughout would turn to him to discuss various things. Once things had begun Son was quite nervous but ever so slowly, as time wore on, the emotional intensity of his performance transported one back to the Mississippi Delta c. 1930 when Son, as a young man, ruled the roost along with Delta legend Charlie Patton. And today, many years later, the images are frozen pieces of time, forever stored in my memory.

Excerpt from a piece by Lawrence Cohn who was present at the session.

    Musicians:

    • Son House (vocal, steel-guitar)

    • Al Wilson (guitar, harmonica)

Recording: April 1965 at Columbia's studios, New York City

Production: John Hammond and Frank Driggs

Blues Traveler are a hippie blues'n'boogie band in the mode of Canned Heat and Savoy Brown. Led by John Popper, a rotund singer and harmonica player, the New Jersey quartet captured the open-ended jam mentality of its live shows on its first two studio albums. On their third album, Save His Soul, Blues Traveler tightens up their arrangements and puts more emphasis on songwriting and premeditated parts. While this cuts down on the meandering solos and monotonous rhythm patterns, it forces attention on the hackneyed aphorisms and melody-starved chord changes that pass for the band's songwriting. On the other hand, they have improved noticeably as players, and bassist Bobby Sheehan shines in particular on the fast and tricky syncopations. --Geoffrey Himes

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Presentation Of His Groundbreaking, Earth Shattering, Iconic 1963 Masterpiece

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso From The Original ATCO Records Tapes

John Lee Hooker was absolutely one of the most prolific and rhythmic pioneers of the blues scene for most of his life. Recording his first 78's in the forties and rapidly becoming one of the most in demand bluesmen of his time, Hooker was truly an American legend of our modern times.

With hundreds of songs and an untold amount of recordings and live performances throughout his
lifetime, John Lee Hooker was also one of the most revered and interpreted songwriters. Major recording acts like Canned Heat, Johnny Winter, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Thorogood were all champions of this sorely missed icon.

Fifty years ago, ATCO Records released one of the most important albums of his career with Don't Turn Me From Your Door - John Lee Hooker Sings His Blues. The dozen gems that make up this rural blues event would go on to become some of his most famous tunes including the title track which was covered by numerous rock and blues artists over the years like Savoy Brown and the terrific blues wailing of Drifting Blues, the rockin' Real Real Gone and of course another brilliant standard with My Baby Don't Love Me.

The award winning giant of the blues continues with even more hard rockin' blues like Guitar Lovin' Man,
Wobbling Baby and his fan favorite Stuttering Blues.

Friday Music is no stranger to the artistry of the late great John Lee Hooker, and it is with much honor to announce the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl 50th Anniversary release of his masterpiece Don't Turn Me From Your Door.

Impeccably mastered by Joe "Bluesman" Reagoso (John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat/Johnny Winter) from
the original ATCO Records tapes, John Lee Hooker's classic Don't Turn Me From Your Door will truly be one of the most anticipated blues releases of the year.

To make your limited edition listening experience all the more entertaining, we are also including the very rare album cover graphics for the first time in fifty years, which will truly enhance the wonderful blues within by the legendary John Lee Hooker.

    Heat Leisure III & IV

Heat Leisure is a collective centered around the Carney brothers of Pontiak, Greg Fox and Alexandra Drewchin of Guardian Alien, Steve Strohmeier of Beach House, and Robert J. Otten III. Their music takes a freewheeling approach to psychedelia with obvious nods to Amon DÜÜl II, Can and the Grateful Dead. For this, their second gathering and recording at the Carney s farm in Virginia, the group recruited the legendary Merry Prankster and Grateful Dead associate Ken Babbs, who emceed the Dead s mythical Veneta, OR gig in 1972 that became Sunshine Daydream, to contribute a shamanistic monologue to III, which occupies the first side of this, their first full-length vinyl release. The Carneys approached Babbs about collaborating with Heat Leisure t his Oregon farm on the last Pontiak tour. Heat Leisure s core principles are spontaneity, serendipity, and collaboration. The band employs frying amp distortion, a signature of Pontiak, as well as an array of drums, synthesizers, samplers, organs and a heavy dose of explorative improvisation by the musicians to create a highly lyrical album. Heat Leisure was conceived as a multi-media pursuit. While this release, III & IV, is an audio record, Heat Leisure I & II was released in the form of a short film/DVD with an accompanying 7 . The Carneys have said that future incarnations could take any form from performance and paintings, to sculptures or even digital mediums. Very much like the collaborative approach of the musicians to each session, they are keeping it open. III & IV was recorded late at night during a three day period during the first week of 2014 in Pontiak s Studio A, also on their farm, with Lain Carney doing most of the engineering. The session was recorded live to 1 tape, the reel old and decaying, which lead the tape to subtly speed up and slow down as the tape broke down and left residue on the tape heads. This organic effect adds to the woozy, surreal vibe of the music, and could not be replicated in a digital recording.

The Heat Is On (Speakers Corner)

A glance at the discs, which rocked through the charts under the simple name of "Isley Brothers" will give you an idea of how a long-lasting and self-generative family enterprise (The Times) became a true soul factory. After a brisk start with popular rock'n'roll music, similar to that which a large number of black vocal groups turned out in the Fifties, followed a long march from one record company to another - all of whom were hard pushed to equate the dynamic musicality of these brothers with the 'own sound' of their productions. After hopping from one record label to the next, and not even getting a long-lasting break with the potent Motown label Tamla, golden days arrived when they set up their own label - T-Neck.

Amidst the turmoil created by strong competition from superb studio albums, the Isleys landed a smash hit in 1975 with The Heat Is On, an album which achieved double platinum status with its collection of perfectly written numbers. Powerful, funky volleys (Fight The Power), gyrating riffs as a launch pad for harmonious vocals and a creative solo (The Heat Is On) go their own way, which is also apparent in the bell-like, airy ballads that swing along tastefully - quite without the sugar-sweet strings so popular at that time.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

    Musicians:

    • Ernie Isley (guitar, drums, percussion, vocals)
    • Chris Jasper (keyboards)
    • O'Kelly Isley, Ronald Isley, Rudolph Isley (vocals)
    • Marvin Isley (bass)

Recording: 1975 at Kendun Recorders, Burbank (CA), by Kent Duncan

    Production: The Isley Brothers

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

The soundtrack to Tim Burton's neo classic moving picture Big Fish (2003), starring Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Lange, collects classic Pop songs and a score of longtime collaborator Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks! and others).

The 2LP soundtrack also contains a new song from Pearl Jam, specifically written for the movie: Man of the Hour. The soundtrack's Pop songs range from Bing Crosby's early-'30s Jazz hit Dinah to the '50s nostalgia of Buddy Holly's Everyday and Elvis Presley's All Shook Up, right up to the '60s and '70s recollections of Canned Heat's Let's Work Together and Ramblin' Man by the Allman Brothers Band.

    Truckin' With Albert Collins

The Albert Collins/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series Begins!

His Groundbreaking, Earth Shattering Debut, Early 60's Texas Blues Masterpiece!

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Presentation • Anniversary Edition

Texan Albert Collins was absolutely one of the most prolific and rhythmic pioneers on the American blues scene
ever. Recording his first 45's in the early sixties and rapidly becoming one of the most in demand bluesmen of his
time, Collins was truly an American legend on the worldwide blues circuit.

While recording a plethora of singles on cool blues labels like Kangaroo, Tracie and Hall-Way from 1962 to 1965,
TCF Records released Albert's first album The Cool Sounds Of Albert Collins a/k/a Truckin' With Albert Collins from a
bunch of these wonderful single sessions. The album quickly faded into obscurity until a chance meeting with Canned
Heat. The band convinced the man to make a move to California and the rest is rock and blues history.

Upon his arrival on the L.A. rock and blues market, he soon became one of the country's leading blues guitarist
with a ton of devotees like his fans Canned Heat, John Mayall, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Robert Cray whom were all
diggin' what the bluesman was laying down.

Blue Thumb Records soon re-released his stunning first album Truckin' With Albert Collins, and now thousands
of blues fans the world over were soon discovering the classic early sixties album which boasted his hit blues singles
like Frosty, Tremble and Frost Bite.

The dozen gems that make up this jumping blues event would go on to become some of his most famous tunes
including Frosty which was covered by numerous rock and blues artists over the years, plus even more terrific blues
rockers like of Sno-Cone II, Icy Blue and the rockin' Don't Lose Your Cool.

Friday Music is no stranger to the best in blues music, and it is with much honor to announce the first time 180
Gram Audiophile Vinyl Anniversary release of Albert Collins' debut masterpiece Truckin' With Albert Collins.

Impeccably mastered by Joe "Bluesman" Reagoso (John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat/Johnny Winter) from the
original Blue Thumb Records tapes, Albert Collins' classic Truckin' With Albert Collins will truly be one of the most
anticipated blues releases of this holiday season.

To make your limited edition listening experience all the more entertaining, we are also including the very rare
gatefold album cover graphics for the first time in four decades, including the stunning essay by the legendary Pete
Welding which will truly enhance the wonderful blues within by the late great and sorely missed Albert Collins.

Synkronized is the fourth studio album released by funk/acid jazz band Jamiroquai, fronted by vocalist and key-member Jay Kay. Originally released in 1999, Synkronized is the band's follow-up to the successful album Traveling Without Moving. The album includes the singles Canned Heat (#1 on the US Dance Charts), Supersonic (#1 on the US Dance Charts and #22 on the UK singles chart), King for a Day, Black Capricorn Day, and Deeper Underground.

The single Deeper Underground originally appeared on the soundtrack to the 1998 film, Godzilla. The song became a hit in several countries and the group's first and only single to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart. The Music On Vinyl version has Deeper Underground added as a special vinyl bonus track which the original LP version from 1999 lacked.

The entire album is a fine example of fusing pop, funk-acid jazz, ethnic influences and Jay Kay's interest in funk and disco and still sounds fresh and groovy today.

    The Taking Of Blackheart

Released in January 2013, The Taking of Black Heart literally sees retro-rock survivors Five Horse Johnson galloping back into action -- or at least that's the rhythmic feel of the album's opening number, The Job, the image gracing its cover art, etc. Given all they've been through (none of it more traumatizing than frontman Eric Oblander suffering a stroke!), few would expect the group to come riding in to rescue classic rock from a fate worse than death (irrelevance), especially some six years removed from their last long-player's release. But as song after song rolls by, oftentimes driven by bluesier and rootsier songwriting ethics than 5HJ's ever displayed before, hope does spring eternal -- amen, bruvvers and sistahs, alright. Wailing harmonica and slippery slide guitars wrap themselves round and round laid-back groovers (Keep on Diggin', Smash & Grab, Die in the River) and foot-stomping bruisers alike (Black Heart Baby, Shoot My Way Out), thereby luring patrons left and right into 5HJ's juke joint -- and the first shot of canned heat is on them. Heck, and if any additional credibility were needed, get a load of Cheap Trick's Robin Zander taking over the mike stand for the album's funkiest, most euphoric moment in You're My Girl -- Otis Redding surely would approve. Perhaps more than any other track, the latter also highlights Five Horse Johnson's enduring faith and pure joy in playing rock & roll, regardless of how many paying customers show up on any given night. They're a band's band, at the end of the day: playing to play -- and The Taking of Black Heart is therefore a welcome return, bringing good news to the rock & roll faithful everywhere.

The Muddy Waters/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series Continues!

Muddy Waters Masterwork Live Album! In Stereo!

First Time Official Audiophile Vinyl - Stunning First Time Gatefold Cover

Mastered From The Authorized Chess Records Stereo Tapes By Joe Reagoso

Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) will always be known as one of the founding fathers of modern day blues. His legendary style of playing guitar, his unique vocal prowess and of course his stellar list of classic Chicago and Mississippi Delta blues tunes
have all gone on to influence generations upon generations of rock and blues performers worldwide.

With almost six decades in the music business, this Mississippi native began his career cutting early sides for defunct labels
before landing in Chicago in the early forties, where he began a long climb to the top of the blues world, later cutting a series of
hit sessions for Aristocrat which became Chess Records. Phil and Leonard Chess knew they had a kingpin on their hands when
Muddy started his endless stream of blues smashes. The label honored the man with his first live album simply titled Muddy Waters
At Newport 1960. Recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival, Muddy drove the crowd into a frenzy with his famous guitar licks and his
Delta growl, truly a thrilling presence on the stage.

Featuring an all-star band with the likes of the legendary James Cotton on harp and the masterful Otis Spann on piano, Muddy
Waters At Newport 1960 would go on to become one of the most revered albums in modern day Chicago blues history.

Kicking things off with one of his finest smash hits I Got My Brand On You, Muddy continues to rock the crowd through a
treasure trove of 8 more blues champions which made this one of the most important live recordings of all time. The album features
classic gems like his classics Got My Mojo Working, Baby Please Don't Go, and I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man. Noted for his stellar
guitar work, pretty much introducing his Chicago laden blues style to a whole new generation of guitar players, Muddy Waters At
Newport 1960 became truly a primer for a ton of rock and blues guitarists for years like Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat
and The Rolling Stones. Muddy broke down barriers for millions of music fans worldwide to enjoy rock and blues, making him along
with John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Robert Johnson one of the first pioneers of the blues and rock genre.

Friday Music is no stranger to the music of the legendary Chess Records arsenal of fine recordings. That is why we are so
very proud to announce another installment in The Muddy Waters/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his legendary
masterpiece Muddy Waters At Newport 1960.

    Late Night Tales: Django Django

Django Django is the latest band invited to curate a prestigious Late Night Tales collection, set for release on 5th May. Like many of the best British groups, the Djangos met at art school, specifically Edinburgh College Of Art, before reconnecting in London. Django Django released their self-titled debut album on quirky French indie Because in early 2012 to some acclaim, winding up in many critics' end of year lists (Top Ten in the NME and Top 30 in Rolling Stone, among them).

Their oddball approach to music, which sounds like the rich harmonies of the Mamas & Papas beamed through a refracting prism pointing towards Bo Diddley, Chicago house and outer-space (it's no surprise to learn that Django producer/drummer Dave Maclean's brother John was in the Beta Band, who also shared the same cinemascopic view of the pop landscape).

"Rollicking sing-alongs, galloping into disco sunsets like whisky-addled and leather-saddled bandits on the stolen backs of prairie wild mustangs," is how Django Django describe themselves. Which is another way of saying they're pop adventurists, as at home with Mad Mike's Underground Resistance as they are the blues rumble of Canned Heat. A bit like this delightful mix, then, which darts about like a gurgle of guppies after two too many espressos.

Check out mixes that rock between two-step delights like Roy Davis Jr's 'Gabrielle' to Nilsson's lyrically winsome 'Coconut'. At one end of the Django spectrum there's James Last, the terminally unhip Teuton, whose 'Inner City Blues' shows you can never underestimate the Germans, while at the far reaches of the mix, they manage to sneak in Ramadanman ('Bass Drums') and Hudson Mohawke and Lunice collaboration TNGHT's 'Bugg'n'. You can hear the echoes of influences in some of the selections, like The Beach Boys whose peerless 'Surf's Up' makes a welcome appearance halfway through, while Seals & Crofts' "Sweet Green Fields" show what sun-drenched pop can sound like when it's done well. And because it's Late Night Tales there's a sparkling cover version of 'Porpoise Song', the theme from The Monkees daffily brilliant 'Head', an admirably lysergic termination to this waltz through pop's nooks and cranberries. "You should never be afraid to make a fool of yourself for art," Dave Maclean once said. Let's raise a dram to Scotland's favourite fools on the hill.

"We wanted to produce a mix that represented the band. It's what we're all into, so everyone put forward suggestions. It's what we are as a band; and we're kids that have grown up with an obsession about our mum and dad's record collections, like '50s and 60s stuff and then got into hip hop and dance music as we grew up. At the heart of it all is our parents' collections, with our tastes mixed in. Our Late Night Tales pays homage to that."
