    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

One of the best known record dates in the history of modern jazz, the chemistry among Adderley, Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey is amazing. Their reworkings of Autumn Leaves and Love For Sale are masterpieces. Miles' title tune and Nat Adderley's One For Daddy-O are classics.

    Texas Cannonball

Released in 1972 as the second of Freddie King's three releases for Shelter Records, Leon Russell's Tulsa-based label. In fact, when Russell first formed Shelter, he reportedly did so partly to play out his vision of recording one of his favorites, Freddie King.

King's output on Texas Cannonball includes brilliant covers of songs by Howlin' Wolf, Lowell Fulson, Leon Russell, Bill Withers and Elmore James.

Backing artists include many musicians who played with Eric Clapton in the 1970s. Clapton has stated many times over that Freddie King was among his chief influences. Supporting musicians include Leon Russell on piano, Carl Radle and Donald Duck Dunn on bass, Jim Gordon, Chuck Blackwell and Al Jackson on drums, Don Preston on guitar and John Gallie on organ.

Recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis in February 1972.

Texas Cannonball is among the first titles to be pressed at Acoustic Sounds' Quality Record Pressings.

    In New York

An exceedingly excellent live date from the legendary Village Vanguard, In New York captures the recording debut of the Adderley Sextet and finds
Cannonball gliding through seven tunes with swinging ease on alto saxophone. Joined by brother Nat on cornet, and the versatile Yusef Lateef on tenor,
flute, and oboe, Cannonball and his crew turn in what All About Jazz calls perhaps the single most indispensable recording by the Adderley Brothers. In
New York is also the first recorded appearance of pianist Joe Zawinul who would go on to jazz prominence as a pioneer of the jazz-fusion genre and a
founding member of the seminal group Weather Report. This special vinyl reissue is a must-have for fans of straight-ahead, classic jazz with an

    Things Are Getting Better

If you ever needed proof that altoist Cannonball Adderley deserves to be considered one of the absolute masters of the jazz idiom, look no further than
Things Are Getting Better, which provides ample evidence for his canonical stature. On this date, Adderley teams up with Modern Jazz Quartet cofounder
and vibraphonist extraordinaire Milt Jackson to create a lively, varied set of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of
Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and the legendary Art Blakey on drums. The standout track, Sounds for Sid, finds Adderley grooving hard
with an R&B flavor, flashing his virtuosic instrumental chops, and demonstrating in the process why this cut stands as one of the very best representations
of Adderley's early work. Essential listening for all manner of jazz enthusiasts, Things Are Getting Better has something for everyone and deserves a

Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 - August 8, 1975) was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Adderley is remembered for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis, including the album "Somethin' Else" (1958). This was recorded during Adderley's membership in the Miles Davis Sextet and is one of the few post 1955 appearances of Miles Davis as a sideman. Indeed, Davis plays several of the first solos, composed the bluesy title track and, according to the liner notes, chose most of the material. "Autumn Leaves" would remain in the Davis book, and "Love for Sale" would be recorded by the Davis Sextet a little over two months later.

Although his name will forever be associated with the celebrated Modern Jazz Quartet, vibraphonist Milt Jackson's discography includes multiple sessions as a leader, many of which are now regarded as jazz classics. Among the crown jewels of his discography was the album Plenty, Plenty Soul, which was given a rating of five stars in Down Beat magazine in 1957, a collection of original compositions and the arrangements of the one and only Quincy Jones. A stone cold classic featuring Cannonball Adderly, Horace Silver, Art Blakey and more. Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

This rare 1960 Riverside blues date finds John Lee Hooker both in a trio setting with jazz musicians Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) who were Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section at the time and unaccompanied on a few numbers as well. A departure from his R&B Vee-Jay output, That's My Story features more of a stripped down, acoustic country-blues sound courtesy of producer Orrin Keepnews. The compelling 12-song set boasts all Hooker originals and is highlighted by the warning shot of Gonna Use My Rod, the gospel-tinged One of These Days and the stirring solo cuts That's My Story and Democrat Man.

After John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly left the 'quintet', Miles Davis was forced to search for new qualified musicians. He found them in Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers. In 1961, just two years after recording Kind Of Blue, Miles and his new line up started recording energetically and finished Someday My Prince Will Come after only three days.

This album is a cross-over from Kind Of Blue, which is known for the typical Miles Davis-tunes, to traditional pop-standards such as the eponymous title track from Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet and he made every moment count. Joined by Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but created a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances that are among the most explosive of his distinguished career in the process.

An expanded double-LP version of Damien Rice's album O has been set for release via Rhino Records.

Prague and Silent Night (featuring Lisa Hannigan), which were hidden bonus tracks after the album's closing song Eskimo, are also included in this release.

O, originally released in the summer of 2002, was one of the last albums to build a true word-of-mouth following before widespread streaming. The Guardian wrote, Rice's personality and deft songwriting hoist him above the mass of bedsit mumblers... at its best, O is gorgeous and understated, never too introverted to include a lovely melody.

Three singles were released from O: The Blower's Daughter in 2001, followed by Cannonball and Volcano in 2002, with many other tracks from the album being audience favorites and mainstays of Rice's live set, notably Delicate, and I Remember.

The Weather Report/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series Begins!

The Original 1976 Jazz Rock Fusion Classic Black Market Album

Featuring Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Chester Thompson, Alex Acuna And The Debut Of Jaco Pastorius

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso And Manufactured By R.T.I.

The legendary Weather Report set the music world on fire back in the early seventies with their hypnotic blend
of progressive-fused jazz with funk, prog-rock and soul, augmented with the brilliant and skillful musicianship of their
superstar founders Wayne Shorter on saxophone and various electronic reeds and the late great Joe Zawinul on a
stunning array of keyboards and electronic instruments. Both of these legendary musicians/composers worked with
Miles Davis on his classics like Bitches Brew, plus solid tenures with legends like Cannonball Adderley (Zawinul) and
Art Blakey (Shorter) all of which would prove to become the huge catalyst for things to come.

Throughout the remainder of the late seventies and beyond, Weather Report's fine arsenal of recordings would
take the band to the top of all the popular music charts. The 1976 fusion classic Black Market would go on to yield
one of the biggest albums of their career as it hit the top rungs of the jazz charts, plus major showings in the pop and
R&B charts. Black Market also introduced the world to the late great bassist legend Jaco Pastorius.

No stone is left unturned, as this masterpiece is loaded with hit after hit with smashes like Joe Zawinul's title
track Black Market, the powerful Elegant People by Wayne Shorter and of course Zawinul's tribute to his recently
deceased bandleader Cannonball Adderley with Cannon Ball.

As one of the most enduring albums in their massive career catalog, Black Market also features the all-star
line-up of Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius (bass), Chester Thompson (drums) and Alex Acuna (percussion).
Friends likes Michael Narada Walden and Alphonso Johnson also contribute to the amazing recording sessions. All in

    That's My Story

Although Orrin Keepnews' Riverside Records was primarily a jazz label, the company dabbled in blues in the 1960s -- and one of the bluesmen who recorded for Riverside was John Lee Hooker. Recorded in 1960, this Keepnews-produced session came at a time when Hooker was signed to Vee-Jay. The last thing Keepnews wanted to do was emulate Hooker's electric-oriented, very amplified Vee-Jay output, which fared well among rock and R&B audiences. Keepnews had an acoustic country blues vision for the bluesman, and That's My Story favors a raw, stripped-down, bare-bones approach -- no electric guitar, no distortion, no singles aimed at rock & rollers. Over the years, Hooker fans have debated the merits of his Riverside albums. Some much prefer him in an electric setting; others applaud the rural vision that Keepnews had for him. But, truth be told, both approaches are equally valid. While many of his electric recordings are stunning, he is also well served by the rawness that Keepnews goes for on That's My Story. From the sobering Gonna Use My Rod (which finds Hooker warning that he will shoot anyone who fools around with his wife) to the gospel-themed One of These Days, Hooker's performances are often compelling. Most of the time, he is joined by two jazz musicians, acoustic bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, both Cannonball Adderley sidemen at the time. However, the blues giant is unaccompanied on a few selections, including the autobiographical title song and the overtly political Democrat Man (a passionate endorsement of the Democratic Party). While That's My Story falls short of essential, it is a solid, rewarding product of Hooker's association with Keepnews and Riverside Records.

In 1958, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis was searching for a new direction to take the music, and signs were pointing him off the chordal highway into a new jazz style: modal. His innovations would open up the world for improvisers. He recruited key players with the potential to solidify his new approach, forming his famed sextet with rising jazz giants John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans & Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Miles hired the little-known Evans because he needed a pianist who was into the modal thing. Davis and Evans both had developed personal voices characterized by a melodic flow that suggested, rather than defined, musical structure. It was his relationship with Evans that created the spark that resulted in the album Kind of Blue.

In only two impromptu sessions in March and April of 1959, Miles Daviss sextet created a tour de force 5 original tunes built on simple scales. Davis is committed to getting something spontaneous out of his musicians. The entire album was composed as a series of modal sketches and was conceived only hours before the recording dates. The outcome? Pure inspiration, and the stuff of legend an album made up of the first full take of each tune, captured at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio. The album was originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, stunning the jazz world by practically creating a new language of music. Its influence goes far beyond jazz. Kind of Blue is universally considered to be one of the best albums of all time, of any genre. Fifty years later, Kind of Blue the epitome of spontaneous inventionis still the best selling jazz album ever.

This Collectors Edition marks the 50th Anniversary with an unprecedented presentation of music, images, insight and history to celebrate the album that is essential to any music collection, the ideal gift item for any jazz lover, especially fans of Miles Davis a true collectors set.
