    Safe As Milk

    Import

Beefheart's debut album, originally released in 1967, was the most accessible and pop inflected of all the releases from his catalogue.
Still 'Safe As Milk' is a very strong and heavily blues-influenced work but it also hints on many of the features that would later become the trademarks of Captain Beefheart.
Nice fact is that not only did a 20-year old Ry Cooder play bass & guitar on 'Abba Zaba' and 'Grown So Ugly,' he also arranged the latter as well as 'Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do.'

Also, Cooder's role in the recording process was to translate the Captain's wilder nations to the rest of the band and generally acts as musical director.
With him as a supervisor the sessions proceeded more or less smoothly and 'Safe As Milk' was recorded within a month.

    Safe As Milk

Captain Beefheart's 1967 debut album Safe As Milk introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind visionary whose unique output had no precedent in contemporary music. Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, filtered the raw influence of the blues and R&B through his own singular musical sensibility and left-field lyrical wordplay, and surrounded himself with some of the most talented and inventive young musicians around. The result was an album that, even in the heady year in which it was released, sounded like nothing else, and the stage for one of rock's most iconoclastic and idiosyncratic careers.

With backup from the first, and perhaps finest, incarnation of Beefheart's legendary Magic Band (including future solo star Ry Cooder on guitar and teenage drum prodigy John "Drumbo" French), and production from future studio superstar Richard Perry, Beefheart unveils his fully-formed sound and vision on such landmark tracks as "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Abba Zaba," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm Glad" and "Electricity" (covered two decades later by Sonic Youth).

Now released by Sundazed Music, this landmark album now sounds the way it was meant to sound, thanks to the restoration of Perry's rare original-and, to most fans, superior-mono mix, which was later altered by Beefheart's label without the artist's involvement. This definitive edition features authoritative new liner notes by Rolling Stone editor and longtime Beefheart enthusiast David Fricke.

"In mono, Safe As Milk is a powerful, concentrated revelation," Fricke writes, further noting, "Safe As Milk promised comfort, exotic nourishment and rude health-and delivered. Created in a year rich in historic debuts and transformative statements about rock's dynamic and expressive possibilities, Safe As Milk was so far in it was out."

It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper

One of the most exciting aspects of reintroducing so much rare and incredible music to the world is being able to finally make available material thats been in label-vault limbo since the day it was recorded, vital sounds locked away from the deserving ears of the legions of devoted music fans we at Sundazed count ourselves among. But when were able to present previously shelved material by one of the most visionary and influential artists of all time, in exceptional fidelity, with the look and feel of the packaging that the artist originally meant it to have? Well, then, that just takes everything to another level completelya level thats certainly been reached with the exclusive vinyl-only issue of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands mind-blowing lost 1967 sessions.

Recorded in part as the follow-up to Safe as Milk, Beefhearts debut from earlier that year, the world-shattering material on It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper was rerecorded, truncated, and issuedwithout the Captains approvalas Strictly Personal in 1968. Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazeds stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the albums planned 67 design; inside are rare photos and fascinating, exhaustive liner notes by Magic Band drummer John Drumbo French.

So here, then, is Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands second album of gloriously disjointed avant-rock/blues and free-jazz skronk, presented just as natureand the Captainintended. Even after more than 40 years, this music is still hopelessly ahead of its timeor, as one-time Magic Band member Ry Cooder once described it, right on time.

    Captain Of None

Colleen is French multi-instrumentalist Cecile Schott, who uses her voice and the treble viola da gamba (a baroque instrument with gut strings), to weave intricate stories about the human mind and heart. Captain of None is the most melodic album in her repertoire, with fast-paced tracks rooted down by prominent bass lines and assorted percussive effects. It is also an album that breaks new ground for Colleen in terms of production. While previous works centered around sample-based or looped, minimal compositions, on Captain of None Schott significantly changed her approach, setting her viola and her voice as focal points. Captain of None is inhabited by delicately crafted, other-worldly pop songs incorporating dub-inspired techniques.

    Former Singer Of Hawkwind

Includes A 4 Booklet With Extensive Liner Notes

Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is the solo debut by Robert Calvert, the former singer of the space-rock band Hawkwind. It's a satirical concept album with both songs and spoken interludes based on the story of the poor quality of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter planes. The sputtering and sprawling planes starts up the album, which portrays the West German minister of defense as a psychopath who's furious about the Luftwaffe. It's the effective combination of rock and Monty Python skits where the true power of the album lies. Psych and space rock, but also folk music makes up the different sides of the album. Some artists who appears on the album are Brian Eno, Lemmy and Arthur Brown. The album as a whole can be seen as a serious and sophisticated effort to search for interaction between music and conversations. It's the first and most perfect release by Calvert.

The English musician, writer and poet Robert Calvert co-wrote Hawkwind's hit single Silver Machine and wrote different Science Fiction books. He's an artist who gave everything for the art, but died way to soon at the age of 43.

The vinyl release of Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters includes a 4 booklet with extensive liner notes.

The Captain And Me (Speakers Corner)

The Doobie Brothers weren't brothers, nor were they called Doobie. The band started life as Pud in 1969 in Chateau LibertÉ, a club in the mountains of California. The group took on the slang name for marihuana cigarettes (doobie) one year later. The Doobies' music, however, never sounded like that of befuddled, half-stoned junkies. Heavy metal hard rock was their thing which made their record company Warner target the bikers of the rocker scene. The idea backfired, though, because the band had far more to offer than explosive hard rock.

The album The Captain And Me is considered to be the group's most concentrated and versatile production since it contrasts aggressive, hard numbers with gentle ones full of melodiousness. The very first number, Natural Thing, shows how winsome vocal folk music and electric guitar riffs can be amalgamated into rock music. Amongst these titles, decidedly angry numbers such as Without You and Evil Woman became real trailblazers. Now and then, an extensive harp solo or nonchalant licks from the acoustic guitar remind one of the pungent bluegrass style emanating from the South. That even the sweet wailing of the steel guitar (South City Midnight Lady) finds room for expression seems quite logical in this well-thought-out musical concept.

    Musicians:

    • Tom Johnston (guitar, harmonica, synthesizer, vocals)

    • Patrick Simmons (guitar, synthesizer, vocals)

    • John Hartman (percussion, drums, vocals)

    • Tiran Porter (bass, vocals)

    • Michael Hossack (drums, conga, percussion)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Captain Beefheart will be forever known as one of the first
originators of art rock, prog-rock and punk rock all rolled into
one. With his Howlin' Wolfesque growl and blazing harmonica
blues wailing, Don Van Vilet a/k/a/ Captain Beefheart truly
delivered the goods with his legendary Mirror Man album.
Originally recorded between 1965 and 1967, The Captain
and his Magic Band created some of the most masterful funk
and progressive rock ever waxed with this stellar session.

Consisting of lengthy jam packed champions like his classic
Tarotplane and 25th Century Quaker, Beefheart continues to
rock further with the international title track hit Mirror Man and
    the funkified rocker Kandy Korn.

Friday Music is very proud to announce the authorized 180

Captain Beefheart's 1982 release Ice Cream For Crow was his final recording before retiring from the music business forever to devote himself to full time painting. A more streamlined new Magic Band is back for this recording and masterfully help send the Captain off in style. Clear Spot

Clear Spot is the seventh album by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.

After Trout Mask Replica, which was critically acclaimed but sold poorly, each of the group's following three albums was slightly more conventional than the one before. Beefheart wanted more commercial success - hence his decision to work with the widely respected team of producer Ted Templeman and engineer Donn Landee, who also created hits for artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon and Van Morrison. Clear Spot gathers together much of the lyrical material that Beefheart had created or formulated at the beginning of The Spotlight Kid recordings. (via Wikipedia)

    Mirror Man Sessions

    Import

When Captain Beefheart went into the studio in late 1967 to record the follow-up to their debut album 'Safe as Milk', which had been released earlier that year, it was with the intention of producing a double album.
Three of the tracks they recorded were long, psychedelic blues jams. These were intended to fill one of the set's two LPs.

This concept, however, was at some point abandoned, and many of the tracks from the sessions were left unfinished and without any vocals.

A number of the abandoned tracks were re-recorded in 1968, and released as 'Strictly Personal'.
The original session tapes, however, remained the property of Buddha Records, who released them under the title 'Mirror Man' in 1971.
In 1999, Buddha Records issued an expanded version of the album entitled 'The Mirror Man Sessions', which features five additional tracks taken from the abandoned tapes.

Music On Vinyl is proud to pay homage to the late Don Van Vliet by re-releasing these Mirrorman Sessions as a double album on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Recorded over a couple of weeks in the summer of 1970 at United Recording Group in Hollywood, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was released the following October. One of Van Vliet's favorites, the album represents the apex of his dissonant style and includes such standout tracks as the quirky-funny I Love You, You Big Dummy and the exquisite solo guitar piece One Red Rose That I Mean.

Don Van Vliet was an American musician, singer-songwriter and artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. His musical work was conducted with a rotating ensemble of musicians called the Magic Band (1965-1982), with whom he recorded 13 studio albums. Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range,Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. His music blended rock, blues and psychedelia with avant-garde and contemporary experimental composition.

    Diddy Wah Diddy

    Double 7 Set

In the high desert of California, they were referred to simply as "Beefheart."

Don Van Vliet acquired the habit of singing along to vintage blues records while hanging with high school chum Frank Zappa. Founder Alex Snouffer formed the Magic Band in late 1964. And, by early 1965, the powerful and charismatic local blues combo had made quite a name for itself locally as "the band" for local dances at the fairgrounds. By late '65 the inclusion of master guitarist Rich Hepner explosively changed the group's chemistry; dances morphed to concerts - with the dancers choosing to sit on the floor, captivated by this white blues band that seemed to transform Exposition Hall into a spellbinding Louisiana swamp.

In early 1966, the band signed with A&M Records. Producer David Gates (of Bread fame) was assigned production duties, and the first result - a cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" - stunned everyone. Famed Del Rio, Texas DJ "Wolfman Jack" introduced it by saying "OK everybody on the highway, you'd better pull over, cause here comes Captain Beefheart with 'Diddy Wah Diddy.'"

Ill-fated times intervened with the coincidental cover of "Diddy" by an East Coast group - The Remains - which was releases almost simultaneously on the Epic Records label. Confusion and chaos reigned, and the songs dropped from the charts quickly. Founder Snouffer reflected: That's a record label's, personal manager's, and band's nightmare." Undaunted, Gates penned a follow-up to "Diddy," entitled "Moonchild." The band arranged it themselves - interpreting Dave's guitar/voice demo. Gates reaction: "Boy, it wasn't supposed to happen like this!"

Van Vliet had also penned his first recorded compositions - "Who Do You Think You're Fooling" for the B-side of "Diddy" and "Frying Pan" for the B-side of "Moonchild." Van Vliet went on in later years through many incarnations of Magic Bands to create the most avante-garde rock music ever recorded, but the roots of these early pieces echo throughout all the later works.
