Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP of Cooder's breakout teems with natural tones, front-to-back imaging, and vintage tube warmth. Boomer's Story benefits from vibrant textures and organic openness, two prized traits that come to fore with breathtaking realism on this analog reissue. Details ranging from the audible resonance of the drum skins, drifting reverb on the guitar, and the inner cavity of the piano take up residence on deep-black soundstages. Having initiated his self-taught learning of customs established by the likes of Josh White, Woody Guthrie, Charlie Johnson, and Robert Johnson as early as age four, and grown up a son of parents obsessed with Folkways Records, Cooder never suffers from the retro rehash fakery plaguing countless contemporary revivalists. The U-Men are one of the best bands I've ever seen. They were
hypnotic, frenetic, powerful and compelling. It was impossible to
resist getting sucked into their weird, darkly absurd world. They
effortlessly blended The Sonics, Link Wray, Pere Ubu, and
Captain Beefheart. Their shows were loose-limbed, drunken
dance parties and no two shows were alike. The U-Men were
avant-garage explorers and, most importantly, they fucking
rocked. I was lucky enough to live in their hometown and I saw
them every chance I could.
From 1983 to 1987, the U-Men were the undisputed kings of
the Seattle Underground. No one else came close. They ruled a
bleak backwater landscape populated by maybe 200 people.
They were the only band that could unify the disparate
sub-subcultures and get all 200 of those people to fill a room.
Anglophilic, dress-dark Goths; neo-psych MDA acolytes; skate
punks who shit in bathtubs at parties; Mod vigilantes who
tormented the homeless with pellet guns; college kids who
thought college kids were lame; Industrial Artistes; some random
guy with a moustache; and eccentrics who insisted that they
couldn't be pigeonholed: all coalesced around the U-Men.
Sub Pop co-founder, Bruce Pavitt released the first record by the
U-Men, a 4-song 12" EP on Bombshelter Records. By the time
they had recorded songs for another record, Bruce was too broke
to release it on his proto-Sub Pop label, so he hooked them up
with Gerard Cosloy at Homestead Records. This was a big deal.
Homestead had a heavy rep at the time with recent releases by
Foetus, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, and Big Black. I was sure that
the release of their second 12", Stop Spinning, would propel the
U-Men into the ranks of those Homestead acts and the
worldwide underground would get hip to Seattle's finest.
Following the departure of bassist Jim Tillman (replaced by Tom
Hazelmyer of Amphetamine Reptile Records, and then Tony
Ransome), the band recorded two fantastic singles, and recorded
their one full-length album, Step on a Bug, for Black Label,
which was run out of Fallout Records. They became increasingly
disenchanted with the direction the Seattle underground was
heading and called it quits in 1989.
The U-Men had nothing to do with Grunge. They were their own
unique thing. I loved them and I still miss them. I remember
thinking at the time that most of their recordings were a little
soft and didn't capture the power of the band live. Now, thirty
years later, their records sound great to me and we are lucky that
they exist. I'm stoked that Sub Pop complied these long
out-of-print records and scrounged up some unreleased songs so
that everyone has a chance to take a trip back to old weird

Ready Player One: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackThe hotly-anticipated soundtrack to "Ready Player One" - Steven Spielberg's science fiction action adventure, based on Ernest Cline's best-selling book of the same name is set for release on vinyl via Water Tower Music. It features a brand-new score by Grammy award-winning composer Alan Silvestri (The Avengers, Back to The Future Trilogy, Forrest Gump)
The film's director/producer Steven Spielberg says, "While all sorts of culturally iconic references populate Ready Player One, the score that Alan Silvestri composed is completely and intoxicatingly original. It's bound together by multiple themes that identify plot and character and is infused by such percussive adrenaline and soaring strings that Alan has made Ready Player One appear to fly. I think his score is fantastic."
Though "Ready Player One" marks their first collaboration on a film directed by Spielberg, Alan Silvestri has scored a number of films produced by the filmmaker, including the "Back to the Future" films. How To Die In The NorthLost treasure needn't be found in the distant past; the 21st century hides many artists who disappeared into the great wide yonder. BC Camplight is one such example. The alter-ego of American songwriter Brian Christinzio released albums in 2005 and 2007, both gems of a certain psych-pop vintage, combining eloquent songwriting with a self-destructive bent. Christinzio certainly knew it - he's described himself as, "the guy who blew it."
But this sublime talent with the keening vocal and fearless approach to lyrical introspection has another chance. His new album 'How To Die In The North', recorded in his newly adopted home of Manchester, England, is a fantastically rich, stylistically diverse trip. From dramatic, layered pop to a haunted take on Sixties sunshine-pop, from blue-eyed soul to speedy surf-pop, from sparser piano balladry to psychedelic showstoppers and a grand finale that's part Nilsson and part Broadway showtune.
Originally from New Jersey, Christinzio started playing piano aged just four, inspired by his mum's Jerry Lee Lewis and Nilsson records and his Dad's classical collection. Depression and crippling hypochondria clashed with captaining the football team and a penchant for boxing. Post-school, he fell in with people, "willing to go through shit to be a musician," which saw him relocate to Philadelphia where he occasionally played live with Philly faves The War On Drugs and guested on Sharon Van Etten's album 'Epic'.
He's already done two sessions for long-term fan Marc Riley at BBC 6 Music, which featured Christinzio's band of Mancunians who he met at The Castle Hotel pub, a watering hole in the city centre particularly popular with musicians. Christinzio also heard John Grant's album on the jukebox there, which encouraged him to approach Bella Union. Grant's cocktail of depression and self-sabotage thwarted an outrageous talent, but he took his second chance. The same deserves to happen to Christinzio, a similarly outsize, sharp and funny personality with a non-conformist streak. Far from dying, BC Camplight has been reborn in the North!1. AloneThe Pretenders are set to release their first album in eight years, Alone, via BMG. Recorded in Nashville and originally intended as a solo follow-up to 2014's 'Stockholm', it soon became obvious that those driving guitars, ragged but righteous arrangements, tough yet tender lyrics delivered by the most beautifully distinctive voice of a generation, sounded fantastically familiar. The Pretenders were back. 36 years after their remarkable first album, 'Alone' could be the older, wiser, badder sister to that exhilarating debut.
Chrissie Hynde recorded the album in Nashville with Dan Auerbach, from The Black Keys, who stood as captain, producer and multi-instrumentalist on the record, an album which sees Chrissie at her searingly honest, most incisive best.
The full band joining Chrissie and Dan on the album features Johnny Cash's former bass player Dave Roe and country rocker Kenny Vaughan on guitar plus sundry members of Dan Auerbach's side project The Arcs: Richard Swift, drums, Leon Michels, keyboards and Russ Pahl providing sly curlicues of pedal steel. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Arctic Monkeys, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello). Duane Eddy also features on the punchy 'Never Be Together'.
