In late 2013, Preoccupations (then known as Viet Cong) released a small-run cassette EP only available on tour. Over the course of a year, Matt Flegel and Scott Munro worked in their basement studio with a mess of old and run down equipment to build a set of fresh material.Joined by bandmates Daniel Christiansen and Michael Wallace, the band completed work on a debut cassette. What emerged from the studio was a mixture of sharply-angled rhythm workouts and euphoric '60s garage pop-esque melodies, balanced with a penchant for drone-y,VU-styled downer moments, and became a hard-to-find classic.

Ranked 167/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, the 1986 album Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton. Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. The striding Battery, the darkly lit Welcome Home (Sanitarium), as well as the complex instrumental, Orion, all gave powerful testament to the band's ever-developing skill and vision. An album with lengthy arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes) and an overall eight song onslaught that clocks in at over an hour was unheard of in metal at the time and it confirmed that Metallica was at a different level, a legendary one!

    Live At Max's Kansas City

There's a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or not
this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder on
August 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed's final appearance with the VU. Historical merit seems to be more
    the issue than high fidelity.

    Magic Windows, Magic Nights

The recording sessions with Guided By Voices producer, Todd Tobias, lasting less than two weeks in the freezing Northeast Ohio cold, showed the band's ability to work at a breakneck pace with pinpoint accuracy and culminated in the fifteen-song monolith release Magic Windows, Magic Night. Blending lo-fi cassette performances, urban NYC field recordings and tape samples with baroque orchestration and Tobias' high-fi analog indie production, Magic Windows, Magic Nights clamors with the noise of a band firing on all cylinders. Five's melodic songwriting often veers from languid to raging, and eclipses the band's 2008 Cassette debut, with tightened Mascis-style guitar melodies and Brian Wilson-style pop concision, while the gunfire drumming of Sustarsic and polytoned sub-frequencies of Shue coalese into a heavy slamming machine. Magic Windows, Magic Nights showcases a band who know the meaning of impermanence and transition, and know how to bridge the gap between oblivion and survival.

    Failure

    Green Colored Vinyl

The Posies' 1988 debut is back
    and bigger than ever!

Little did Jon Auer and Ken
    Stringfellow know that when
    they dropped off their cassette
    to Scott McCaughey (R.E.M.,
The Minus 5), the clerk at their
favorite record store (who happened to do A&R for the indie
label PopLlama), that a power pop dynasty would begin.

    Originally released by the
band on cassette, then issued on LP (with one track removed for
the then-current time constraints), and later on CD, Failure set the
independent music world on fire. Omnivore Recordings is proud
    to reissue this landmark album.

This 2014 edition sees the original 12-track playlist restored and
available on vinyl for the first time since its original issue (and cut
    by Kevin Gray).

While Auer and Stringfellow have continued on-whether as members of the reunited Big Star, as The Posies and as solo artists-the
journey began at Failure. Step back in time and hear the future.

    Max's Kansas City (Discontinued)

In the summer of '70, The Velvet Underground was the house band, and their nightly gigs, propelled by Lou Reed's mesmerizing vocals, are the stuff of legend. Documented on a cassette player by one of the Velvet's entourage.

Capturing one of Reed's last-some say final-performances with the band before going solo. It both immortalizes a precise moment in pop culture history, and also spotlights one of rock's most influential bands at the peak of their extraordinary powers.

    Plateau Vision

Though Lushlife describes himself as a bedroom composer, the em-cee/producer has been quietly crafting a catalog of sweeping full-lengths that do nothing to betray the dimensions of his small South Philly workspace. His latest, Plateau Vision, finds Lush at his most self-possessed, effectively ignoring the outside world of Tumblr-paced album cycles and blog buzz, to create that rare, contemplative hip-hop LP; one that somehow balances its hazed-out cassette experimentations with the pop-friendly underpinnings of big-room hip-hop.

Boom In The Night (Awaiting Repress)

Post new wave funk/punk early '80s stars of the New York club scene, the Bush Tetras were one of the most popular and exciting groups of the era. Here we have their original studio recordings, 1980-83, remastered by band member/drummer Dee Pop. It includes all their Clash period production work by Topper Headon and Joe Blaney. Originally released on cassette and available on vinyl once again courtesy of ROIR Records.

    Obaa Sima

Ata Kak's cassette Obaa Sima fell on deaf ears when it was self-released in Ghana and Canada in 1994. The music on the recording-an amalgam of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk and disco-is presented with the passion of a Prince record and the DIY-bedroom-recording lo-fi charm of early Chicago house music. The astute self-taught song craft and visionary blend of sounds and rhythms has made the album a left-field cult favorite among adventurous listeners worldwide.

Ekoplekz delivers his third long-player for Planet Mu, and whilst the murky four-track cassette sound and dirty analogue textures are still very much in place, keen ears might spot a subtle change in emphasis. There are less of the radiophonic sci-fi sounds, ancient drum machines and none of the post-punk bass or guitar. Instead, Nick Edwards mainly focuses on invoking a blurry, saturated false-memory of the leftfield electronica that was the soundtrack to his life in the early to mid-1990s.

    The White Tape (Awaiting Repress)

Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, Phish (aka The White Tape) was created from four-track recordings which the band and band members mixed, dubbed and circulated as a demo. It consists of an assortment of four-track recordings from 1984-1985 including four songs recorded by
all the existing members of Phish as a band: Alumni Blues, AC/DC Bag, Slave To The Traffic Light and Dog Gone Dog (a/k/a Dog Log). The
balance was recorded separately by the band members and blended together from 4-track cassettes to create the album as we know it. Trey
has said The White Tape exemplifies, perhaps more than any other studio effort, the band's unbridled creative freedom of the day. The
White Tape highlights Phish's early development with ethereal soundscapes and interesting sketches on Phish's classics-to-be such as an
acoustic The Divided Sky as it existed then and even an acapella rendering of You Enjoy Myself.

In 1998, The White Tape was re-mastered from the 2-track cassette master and sold as the first CD from the band's extensive archives.
The original art for the cassette demo was created by Trey himself and was updated for the CD and LP release by artist Jim Pollock. A snapshot
in time, The White Tape is a must-have for any fan and a perfect introduction to the band's studio work.

    Room Temperature

Recorded in the winter of 1992 in Nebraska, with two microphones and a cassette four-track recorder. Despite being his second full-length, this was Joyner's first fully realized album, the one that first caught the interest of British DJ John Peel, who played it so often, he single-handedly created a European audience for the Midwest singer-songwriter. Populated with sometimes harrowing and desperate stories of the complex workings of the human heart (in conflict with itself), the stark record features Joyner solo on all tracks. This marks the influential album's first appearance on vinyl.

Earn is Matthew Sullivan, known to some already as Privy Seals, his extremely harsh noise project, collaborator with underground ambient artist Sean McCann, owner of the cassette label Ekhein, one half of the group 1958-2009 and former member of the legendary Deep Jew. A prolific gentleman with an ear for blissful engulfing tones and radiance that go beyond ambient or shoe gaze. His project Earn stands as a testament at his ability to use minimalism as an approach to guitar playing to find sounds, exude gentle brushes of color and embrace the emotional state of the player.

    Harvest

The smooth, deep groans of lunar gravity. Salt-soaked ropes swing against hollow masts. An orange helium balloon floats above the city's amber glow. Patrick is only mildy drunk, and enjoying a cigarette when she walks past. He stops her to share his joy that this purring orb is actually the harvest moon. Kansas City's Andrew Plante presents four tracks of focused guitar work on this 45rpm, 12 vinyl release. My World Was Made For You

My World Was Made For You is the debut album from The Icypoles, four gals from Melbourne who would just as easily fit into a Bande a Part dance scene or be happily serving cherry pie at Twin Peaks' Double R Diner*. Having become a familiar fixture on Melbourne's inner-north stages, and with two previous releases (2009's Getting Ready cassette and 2011's Promise to Stay 7" EP), The Icypoles' musical adventures can be traced back to the early 00s, with half the band finding their formative footing playing in Architecture in Helsinki.

    Liital

Senegalese griot Aby Ngana Diop was famous for her taasu, a form of oral poetry spoken to the rhythmic accompaniment of sabar and tama drums. Taasu is typically created and performed by griot women (a class of poets, storytellers and/or musicians), with a lead taasukat (practitioner of taasu) performing her distinct style of heightened, rhythmically declaimed speech in call-and-response with a small chorus of female vocalists. (Taasu is seen by some to be a predecessor to rap.) Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Diop developed a reputation for being one of the most sought-after taasukats in Dakar, performing with her backup singers, dancers and drummers at parties, weddings and baptisms of the Dakar elite, including government officials and dignitaries. Aby Ngana Diop was undisputedly the best taasukat of her generation.

In 1994, the Dakar diva released her one and only studio cassette recording, Liital, to the Senegalese market. Liital was groundbreaking in the history of Senegalese music because it was the first commercial recording to feature a traditional female taasukat performing to the modern accompaniment of mbalax, Senegal's quintessential pop genre. The combination of Diop and her backup vocalists with their powerful taasu, along with the driving, complex rhythms of the sabar and tama drums, mixed with key elements of mbalax (such as the syncopated, polyphonic marimba sounds played on the Yamaha DX7 keyboard) was something the Senegalese public had never heard before. But it wasn't only because of the fusion of taasu with mbalax; unlike in other mbalax tunes, the musical arrangements on this cassette are instead peculiarly minimalist and almost trance-like, with static harmonies and melodic figures
playing more of an atmospheric role. The cassette became a huge hit, propelling Diop to a new level of superstardom. It could be heard blasting from taxis and from loudspeakers at house parties, weddings and baptisms for years to come. Liital bridged the gap between the more traditional taasu and the modern mbalax sound, thus appealing to all generations of the Senegalese public - and they simply couldn't get enough of it.

When Aby Ngana Diop died unexpectedly on July 4, 1997, the country mourned her passing, but continued to celebrate her music. Other artists such as Cheikh Lô, Thio Mbaye and Lamine TourÉ released recordings based on some of Diop's taasu and accompanying drum phrases, paying further tribute to her musical legacy. Although this cassette has caught the attention of some African music aficianados who have stumbled upon it in recent years, it remains largely unknown to the wider world. Hopefully this re-release from Awesome Tapes From Africa will change that.
