    You Are Free

Originally released in 2003, You Are Free is the critically acclaimed sixth full-length release from Cat Power aka Chan Marshall. Although the epic 14-song set includes guest appearances from Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder and Warren Ellis, it's the richly complex vocal stylings and minor-key poetics of Marshall that are front and center here. Exploring the nature of relationships and fame, from the anguished, layered "Speak to Me" to the searching irony of "He War," You Are Free is at turns evocative, intense and beautifully beguiling. Moon Pix

Cat Power's stirring 1998 album Moon Pix, her fourth overall, continued Chan Marshall's evolution from indie-rock queen to reflective, accomplished songstress. The addition of The Dirty Three's Mick Turner and Jim White here also adds new depth to the proceedings as they gracefully complement Marshall's compelling, intricate guitar lines and gently insistent vocals to fine effect. Moon Pix is a soulful collection of songs that begins to truly uncover the raw power and emotional vulnerability that would inform Marshall's work from here on out. The Greatest

Cat Power's (aka Chan Marshall) 2006 masterpiece The Greatest (not a greatest hits album, despite the title) features 12 dreamy country soul tracks recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios under the supervision of Stuart Sikes. The sublime set finds Marshall wonderfully supported by the great Memphis session musicians Teenie Hodges on guitar and Leroy Hodges on bass (Al Green, Hi Rhythm Section), drummer Steve Potts, Jim Spake, Hubby Michell and other legends.

The combination of Marshall's superbly evocative and flexible voice, a soul voice even back when she played with indie rockers, with some of the greatest Southern soul players still alive, has produced a timeless release on par with Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis or Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline.

The songs, all original Marshall compositions, explore themes of Southern loss, longing and marginality. From the title track, a story about a boy who longs to become a boxer but struggles against his poverty-stricken background, to tales of other marginal figures, The Greatest is all about triumphing over the odds. Cassius' story thus far is already the stuff of dance music mythology. They emerged amidst Paris' defining French Touch movement, where the likes of 'Feeling For You', '1999' and 'The Sound of Violence' - alongside friends such as Daft Punk - helped shape the future of electronic music. Cassius is back with "Ibifornia", a double-sided album which gathers their crew of friends (Pharrell, Cat Power, Mike D des Beastie Boys, M ), fondly nicknamed "Cassius and their Family Stone" by the duo.

    Sun

Sun is the first album of original material from Cat Power since her critically acclaimed 2006 album The Greatest and follow-up to her second covers album Jukebox which was released in 2008. In addition to the lead single Ruin, the 11-song set is highlighted by the New York City homage "Manhattan" and the 11-minute epic "Nothing But Time" which features backing vocals by Iggy Pop.

Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of SUN by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs' themes. The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

    Jackleg Devotional To The Heart

Jackleg Devotional to the Heart is The Baptist Generals' sophomore album. The Denton, TX band, known for its haunting, claustrophobic take on drunken folk, needed ten full years to bare its hearts, after Chris Flemmons recorded the album's first attempt in 2005, and then trashed it because, according to him, it sounded like any other indie rock-type band. Jackleg Devotional to the Heart was Co-produced by Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, Cat Power, The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) and the band's Jason Reimer, and it sounds like exactly no one else.

John Doe's The Westerner will be released via Cool Rock Records/Thirty Tigers. Throughout his career, Doe has garnered worldwide acclaim: NPR Music describes his work as "one of the warmest, most welcome voices in pop music. There's a beseeching quality to his singing that draws you in with curiosity," while American Songwriter praises, " a winning platter of '60s inspired rock with a singer-songwriter twist." Doe calls The Westerner his "psychedelic soul record from the Arizona desert."

The album features ten new tracks from Doe with guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West and Tom Brosseau. The Westerner was produced by Howe Gelb (Neko Case, M. Ward), Dave Way(Fiona Apple) and Doe. After spending the better part of two years on the road (including festival stops at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Sasquatch, Monolith and tours with The Walkmen, Spoon, Richard Swift, The Cribs, White Denim and Tokyo Police Club) the White Rabbits hunkered down in their Brooklyn practice space to set about re-envisioning the dark pop of their critically acclaimed debut Fort Nightly, while adding new sounds and influences to achieve an original work. In The Wilderness

Stranger Cat is the new project from Cat Martino, Sufjan Stevens' right hand woman for
the Age of Adz tour and record, as well as All Delighted People. Cat was also a recording
and touring member of Sharon Van Etten's band circa Epic. She appeared with The Shins
on SNL and Williamsburg Park, played in Passion Pit at Governor's Ball, and sings on the
Son Lux record Lanterns. She has had the pleasure to support Indians, Night Beds, Rufus
Wainwright, Marissa Nadler, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Patrick Watson.

Cat retreated from Brooklyn, NY to winter in the Sierra Foothills to write and record
songs emerging from loops using her voice, synths, and percussion. With her pedal chain
and gear in a small cottage she explored the gamut from ethereal to turbulence. Simple
melodies or beats became powerful walls of sound melting through snowstorms, howling
winds and stark silence nestled inside gargantuan oaks and the infinite starry dome.
Joined by Sven Britt for a week, each of them traded making beats, or melodic parts on
casios, synths, guitars, branches and spoons, while the other recorded. Often a cat would
come to the door to listen, meowing to be let in. When it appeared daily they called it
Stranger Cat, and observed its alien supernatural powers, as she'd heard tell of the
Foothills' long history of UFO sightings and ghost haunts. One day they let Stranger Cat
in. The plump feline ate all the kitty food and left.

    The Sides And In Between

The Sides And In Between is the new album from Atlanta band Gringo Star, their first for Nevado Records.

If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele's roots, it all makes sense. Our grandad started out in radio in the 40s and 50s in Columbus, GA., Nick explains. He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out. Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. Our favorite music comes from the 50s, Peter says, and that music influenced all the 60s bands we like.

The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.

    Life/Thrills

Acting as a respite from the celebrated strains of modern Australian
underground music, Lower Plenty manage a deconstruction of folk
music like none other: unsettled, unforgiving, unconcerned with
what came before or what's to follow. Acoustic guitars shuffle in
and out of phase with one another, double-tracked vocals hover
above in careful meter, brushed snare rattles the very frame of their
sound, and then everything shifts again, and again. Comfort's not
long here, though beauty is maintained; melodies start sweet but
turn inward, wane nostalgic and wax without resolve. Lyrics pawn
regret out of the ordinary, drifting in and out of your consciousness
like something heard in passing and reconstituted in a dream. Their
sound demands your attention, to the point where gloved, spectral
hands could very easily jump out of their music and grab you by the
    sides of your head.

Life/Thrills is the Melbourne group's third full-length, and their
collective experience (members play in a host of other bands, not
limited to Total Control, The UV Race, Exhaustion, Deaf Wish and
Dick Diver) will leave you thoroughly unprepared for the beautiful
confusion suggested by these ten songs, which seem to have the
power of slowing and even stopping time. Suitable comparisons to
this music are as disparate as early Cat Power, Arab Strap, the
Shrimper roster ca. 1992, the Sun City Girls, and the late '60s/early
'70s output of the Red Crayola, but as with much truly original
music, Lower Plenty resists direct comparison and defies
expectation. Their shambling, discordant presence will relieve you
of any preconceptions - this is one best experienced alone, as the
sun fades into the horizon for the night.

    Bluebird

    "Musically she exists somewhere between
Feist and Townes Van Zandt, and her New
    York-by-way-of-Kentucky pluck is a refreshing
    antidote to schmaltzy neo-folk"
    - SPIN

"Dawn Landes' music sits neatly on the
fulcrum between Cat Power and Neko Case"
    - PASTE

" compelling mix of alternative folk with
    instrumental experimentation just the right
    hint of country"
    - NPR

" Landes is a haunting presence in the world
    of alt-folk experimentalism.
    - BLACKBOOK

Based in Brooklyn, but raised in Louisville, singer-songwriter Dawn Landes has been writing
songs for most of her life, and at 33 already has more than a decade of experience as a
professional producer and engineer. After leaving NYU where she studied psychology and
literature, Landes began honing her production and engineering skills, working at Stratosphere Sound
(owned by James Iha, Adam Schlesinger, and Andy Chase), and at Philip Glass'
personal recording studio, before launching Saltlands Studio in Brooklyn with partners Steve
    Salett and Gary Maurer.

Her new album Bluebird was produced in collaboration with good friend Thomas Bartlett
(known for his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, Rufus Wainwright, Antony and the
Johnsons, and many others), and features contributions from Tony Scherr, Rob Moose, and
    Norah Jones.

Press coverage of Bluebird will understandably present this album as Dawn's answer to her
ex's divorce record. However, like any great songwriter, she's abstracting her personal
narratives enough to leave them open to interpretation and a larger meaning. Bartlett's
spartan production keeps the vibe intimate, making it easy to connect with these naked and
honest songs which manage to rise above the context in which they were written. In the end,
the fact that Bluebird is Landes' way of processing the overwhelming emotions she dealt
with after her divorce doesn't matter - there are two sides to every story, and this is hers.

    Tied To A Star

J Mascis' Tied to a Star is the follow up to his acclaimed Sub Pop debut
Several Shades of Why. The album, led by the songs "Every Morning"
and "Wide Awake," was recorded and produced by Mascis and mixed
by John Agnello at Bisquiteen in Amherst, MA.

It makes perfect sense that I was asked to write a bio for J Mascis.
Let's face it, he and I have a long history. It all started the first time I
saw him live. It was in New York City. I don't remember when or where,
but I think he was walking around. I was probably walking around, too.
The second time was also in New York, at a Mexican restaurant in the
East Village (the one that takes credit cards now, but didn't used to).
Years later I actually met him at the SXSW festival though a friend who
works at Sub Pop. I guess that meeting went well, because when that
friend from Sub Pop got married, she sat me at the same table as J.
Sounds unbelievable? I suggest you look at the picture below. Now keep
staring at that picture until... J's new acoustic
album Tied to a Star comes out on Sub Pop Records. It features
appearances by Ken Maiuri (Young@Heart Chorus), Pall Jenkins (Black
Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall
(Cat Power). Had I been in the area, I'm sure I would've been asked to
    play on it, too.

    Unravelling

We Were Promised Jetpacks release their highly anticipated third album Unravelling, recorded in Glasgow at the infamous Chem19 Studios with Paul Savage (The Twilight Sad, Franz Ferdinand and Mogwai). The impending album release also sees the addition of a new member to the band in the form of multi-instrumentalist Stuart McGachan. The results of the sessions with Savage have made for the band's most accomplished and powerful album yet, taking their already legendary prowess with dynamic rock and injecting a bit of pop sheen to the mix.

    Toy

Includes Lead Singer Sabrina Ellis'Handwritten Lyrics + A Photo Of The Band

Toy, the fourth LP from A Giant Dog and their second for Merge, shows the Austin quintet at the height of their powers. A solid year of road-dogging and wood shedding has made the band tighter than ever, the charging dynamo of Andrew Cashen and Andy Bauer's guitars in lockstep with the primal chug of the rhythm section of Graham Low on bass and Daniel Blanchard on drums,in the latter's recorded debut. Lead singer Sabrina Ellis turns in another masterful performance, in equal parts brash, defiant, vulnerable, and raw.

Lyrically, Sabrina and Andrew have a gift for making their personal frustrations and fuck-ups, fears, lusts, and addictions feel universal. While they have always given voice to the weirdos and creeps-showing that their peccadilloes and peculiarities are much more deep-seated and widespread-they dig even deeper on Toy. I feel I've revealed more in this album than ever before, Sabrina confesses. Still, the band doesn't sacrifice an ounce of catchiness or charm when tackling issues like aging, agency, and mortality. For proof, just look at Photograph (not the Nickelback song), the sweetest love song about physical longing and enduring devotion to one's lover, even as their body succumbs to the ravages of time. Influences from Thin Lizzy to Tinariwen reveal themselves on the horn-heavy Toy Gun, within the string laden core of Fake Plastic Trees (not the Radiohead song), and during the explosive conclusion to Angst in My Pants (yes, the Sparks song). The hunger is real on Toy; it's not hard to believe Sabrina and Andrew when they proclaim, I'm not a lover / I am a fight on Bendover.

A Giant Dog recorded Toy with Grammy-winning engineer Stuart Sikes(Loretta Lynn, Cat Power, The White Stripes, Reigning Sound), and singer/songwriter/guitarist/wildman Cashen produced it. Andrew as producer makes a lot of sense, Sabrina says. He composes the songs and knows better than anyone what they should sound like in the end. With him at the helm, we've arrived at a raw, truthful, risky, and rangy album.
