Released in 1985, the band's second album had an ominous pall of doom and gloom, enmeshed in a sound both primitive yet also Wagnerian in its vast scope. Many claim this was a massive inspiration for black metal bands later in the decade. In truth, though, none matched what was here.

    The Art Of Self Defense

180g double vinyl version from Southern Lord in Stoughton gatefold jacket with 20 page bound in 12" x 12" book and printed inner-sleeves.

Cult metal favorite High On Fire was founded by former Sleep guitarist Matt Pike in the summer of 1998. Berthed out of the need to simply play guitar again, Pike jammed with and settled on a line-up of powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime guitarist compatriot George Rice, who made the switch to bass to round out the trio. They had scarcely been together for a few months before demoing three songs. That demo, featuring "Master of Fists" and instant classics "10,000 Years" and "Blood from Zion," became among the most sought-after tapes in the underground metal scene. High On Fire got straight to the point, bashing away with a neanderthal sense of purpse and creating hyptnotic, droning waves of powerful riffs and low-end thunder of the likes not heard before.

Throughout '99, High On Fire continued writing for their debut full-length. The band recorded their debut with Sleep engineer/producer Billy Anderson at Shark Bite Studios in Oakland, CA. The Art of Self Defense served up a rock hard, unorthodox form of modern metal cloaked in strange religious theology and the trio's style was unique, distinct, heavy as all fuck and absolutely crushing. The album immediately became a cult classic and not even the closure of the label that released the album (Man's Ruin) could stop the powerhouse that had been unleashed. Tee Pee records reissued the album in 2001 with 2 bonus tracks: "Steel Shoes" and a ripping cover of the Celtic Frost song "The Usurper."

Another meticulously packaged vinyl release from the masters of the craft. Without question one of the most supernal releases in the history of the label!

Carving Out The Eyes Of God

After the release of A Haunting Curse, Goatwhore stayed busy playing multiple tours across all over the world including a coveted spot on 2007's Sounds of the Underground and 2008's Ozzfest in Texas where metal juggernauts Metallica closed out the day of metal. Other tours and dates included Sunn O))), Hatebreed, All Shall Perish, Celtic Frost, Venom, Fear Factory, Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation, God Forbid, and Amon Amarth just to name a few. Obviously Goatwhore kept themselves busy throughout the course of the album cycle playing with a wide variety of bands proving just how multi faceted the group's reach is.

Enter 2009: New Orleans, LA's sons of American no-frills black metal, GOATWHORE, have just announced that the title of their fourth full-length album, and second for Metal Blade, will be Carving Out the Eyes of God. For the follow up to 2006's A Haunting Curse, GOATWHORE headed back to St. Petersburg, FL to record with producer Erik Rutan at Manna Studios with mastering being handled by Alan Douches of West West Side.

Vocalist Ben Falgoust comments on the direction of the new album; I don't really know how to explain this. I don't want to come off with the typical speech about how this record is our best yet and all of that. I will say that I am quite pleased how it has turned out and all parts relating to it. I feel every member put a great deal of effort into their part of the project. I even feel Erik Rutan busted his ass even more this time to make us feel that we didn't take any steps backwards in the recording and production of this release. I don't even really care what the critics say. I think the end result is basically coming up with something you have put a lot of work into and the satisfaction achieved in completing it. I will say that the new material is ripping metal and we still have that 'Goatwhore' sound, whatever that may mean for each individual that enjoys or hates what we do. Just look at it as another step in the evolution of this band. Each person that hears it will have his or her own perception of it. Like it or not, we don't have a say in it. The only thing we can do is just keep writing the way we do and accept the criticism. Doesn't mean we are gonna listen to the criticism and change. Just give it an honest listen and if you dig it, awesome! If you don't, then pass it on to a friend or use it as a new drink coaster.

Guitarist Sammy Duet had this to add; Dark, heavy, evil. Erik Rutan did one hell of a job on it. If you don't like it... kiss my ass.

    Abandon All Life

Nails, tyrants of the American underground, have triumphantly completed their second full-length Abandon All Life. Recorded at Godcity with Kurt Ballou (Converge) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise), these ten tracks of barbaric rage have no resemblance to the laughable, retro party metal that passes as extreme music in today's world. Instead, Nails carpet bombs the listener with their horrifying brand of death/grind/hardcore chaos; flawlessly blending shades of Suffocation, early Nasum, and Celtic Frost with their own sadistic aggression. With profound hatred, the howling war cry of Abandon All Life shows Nails as a band without equal in their class.

Formed in 2009, the Swiss group SCHAMMASCH combines a forward approach to modern black metal, articulating their extreme roots with doom-laden atmospherics dredged with Hermetic mysticism. The band, whose name derives from Babylonian sun god Samaš, signed to Prosthetic in 2014 to release Contradiction, which Metal Hammer lauded as one of the most overwhelming albums of the year...cerebral and utterly absorbing. Now, Prosthetic proudly reissues SCHAMMASCH's 2010 debut opus Sic Lvceat Lvx, which translates from Latin to Let the Light Shine. Consisting of seven hypnotic, cinematic tracks, the album -- which, until now, has only been available as a limited-edition CD release in select European countries -- has been freshly remastered by V. Santura (Celtic Frost, Triptykon), with glorious new artwork by Valnoir (The Black Dahlia Murder, Behemoth).

    Rust

Rust" is the new album from Harm's Way. Recorded at Brick Top Recordings by Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Dead In The Dirt), mixed at God City Studios by Kurt Ballou (Converge, High On Fire), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Nails). Brutally and meticulously refined, "Rust" brilliantly combines industrial repetition (think Godflesh), metal attack (think Sepultura, Helmet, Celtic Frost), and hardcore aggression. Showing that Harm's Way have emerged from the wreckage of past genres as the new high watermark of heavy in contemporary aggressive music.

Opener "Infestation" stomps with machine-like precision before plunging into a depressing sonic dirge. While songs like "Law Of The Land", "Hope", "Cancerous Ways", and others introduce guitar and electronic driven atmospherics into the arsenal. These subtle dynamics bleed into other aspects of "Rust" as well. Mid-album beast "Left To Disintegrate" unfurls as an unforgettable anti-anthem ripe with infectious creeping metallic undertones. While "Amongst The Rust" and "Turn To Stone" introduce guest vocals from Colin Young (Twitching Tongues) and Emily Jancetic. Both of them adding haunting nuance to the brute force of the band. All of this leads to the epic closer "Ease My Mind"; a take-no-prisoners aural bludgeoning so heavy that it needs to be heard to be believed.

Created to further develop the darkness invoked by its immediate precursors, seminal black/extreme metal pioneers Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, Triptykon evolved from a Celtic Frost side project initiated by Tom Gabriel Fischer (a.k.a. Tom Gabriel Warrior), the group's singer, guitarist, and main songwriter.

Both music and lyrics reveal a group immersed in themes such as history, occultism, human disintegration, religious fanaticism, and nihilism. Songs such as "Abyss Within My Soul", "A Thousand Lies", and, particularly, "The Prolonging" bear witness to wastelands of eternal night. The transcending and mergence of seemingly distinct forms of imagination, a hallmark long prominent in Celtic Frost's efforts, is naturally also abundant within Triptykon's sphere of inspiration.

Cult band Mortuary Drape was formed in Italy in 1986 as a trio, including the now long-standing & sole-remaining member, Wildness Perversion. Highly inspired by the dark arts & combining early influences from bands such as Mercyful Fate & Celtic Frost, Mortuary Drape developed their own unique style, defining themselves as black occult metal & releasing the demo 'Necromancy' in 1987 which spread their name throughout the underground; though it was not until 1992 that their first official release surfaced, with 'Into the Drape'. This was followed by the debut full-length album, the classic 'All the Witches Dance' in 1994.

'Tolling 13 Knell', Mortuary Drape's third full-length album was originally released in 2000 on Avantgarde Music. Often regarded as one of the band's strongest works, the album delivers an eerie concoction of evil metal riffing & dark occult atmosphere to unnerving effect.

'Tolling 13 Knell' has now been fully remastered especially for this release, with the process overseen by the band. This reissue also contains extra tracks in the form of re-recorded versions of the infamous 'Doom Return' demo songs. These new versions were recorded during the 'Tolling 13 Knell' sessions.

    Always (Out of Stock)

The Gathering is a Dutch alternative rock band, and was founded in 1989 by brothers Hans and RenÉ Rutten and vocalist Bart Smits. The early incarnation of the band featured a much more death and doom metal based style than the more atmospheric rock and experimental music they became known for over the years, having enjoyed a highly successful career globally over a 20 year period. The band recorded 2 demos initially before making their studio debut with 'Always '.

'Always ' was The Gathering's debut full-length album. Originally released in 1992 , it is a prime example of classic atmospheric death/doom metal with brutal vocals and slow funereal riffing influenced by bands such as Celtic Frost, as well as the implementation of keyboards to accentuate the dark ambience. Now released on Peaceville for the first time, a track from the release was even featured on an early Peaceville Records compilation, 'Volume 4', with the track 'In Sickness and Health'.
