Last DanceKeith Jarrett: piano
Charlie Haden: double bass
Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden broaden the scope of their duo project to showcase jazz classics like Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" and Bud
Powell's spritely "Dance Of The Infidels". Love songs, however, are to the fore in this selection, with tender versions of "My Old Flame", "My Ship", "It
Might As Well Be Spring", "Everything Happens To Me", and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" as well as alternate takes of "Where Can I Go Without You"
and "Goodbye", every bit as touching as the Jasmine renditions. "When we play together it's like two people singing", said Jarrett of his reunion with
Haden. The intentions of the song are honored, the shades of meaning in a melody or a lyric explored instrumentally. As Charlie Haden put it, "Keith really
listens, and I listen. That's the secret. It's about listening."The music of Last Dance was recorded at Keith Jarrett's home studio.1. My Old Flame

Petra Goes To The MoviesPetra Haden's wondrous new album Petra Goes to the Movies offers a one of a kind opportunity to experience film scores in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain all the emotional resonance of the originals. Out this January 22 via Anti-, Petra Goes to the Movies features Haden, a highly regarded session musician (Foo Fighters, Beck, the Decemberists) and former member of That Dog, delivering a cappella versions of scores from films such as Psycho, Rebel Without A Cause, Taxi Driver, Superman and more. Haden, who hails from a musical family that includes her father, distinguished jazz bassist Charlie Haden, has a history of working a capella; in 2005, at the suggestion of bassist Mike Watt, she recorded and released an a-cappella rendition of the Who's pop masterwork The Who Sell Out to widespread acclaim. Upon hearing the record, Pete Townshend telephoned Haden to enthusiastically thank her, proclaiming her version of his album "beautiful."
Petra Goes to the Movies is the culmination of Haden's lifelong love for both vocal interpretation and movie music: "The idea of interpreting music with my voice started when I was little," she explains. "I would hear music around the house and mimic the instruments with my voice. And I love movies but my favorite thing about them has always been the soundtracks. When people hear this record I want them to feel what I felt when I first saw the film, even if they've never seen it."
In addition to Haden's multi layered vocals, the record features notable guest appearances by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell.1. Rebel Without A Cause Main Title - Rebel Without A

The Shape Of Jazz To ComeRanked #246 on Rolling Stone's List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
Quartet Includes Don Cherry and Charlie Haden
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes on 180 Gram Vinyl
1959's landscape-shifting The Shape of Jazz to Come is true to its title. Switching from tenor to alto sax, Ornette Coleman creates free jazz, a language where chords structures are absent and harmony gives way to improvisational whims. The Atlantic set finds Coleman collaborating with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins in making a masterful work free of any identifiable chord structures. Nonetheless, melodies remain, as do engrossing repetitions of main themes.
ORG Music brings the breakthrough arrangements and magnificent colors to life in a way no one's experienced since the LP was recorded. Mastered from the original master tapes, this life-changing music has never sounded so alive and dynamic. This is a must.1. Lonely Woman

UNIM-FAN-5165xJoe Henderson & Alice Coltrane
The Elements (Awaiting Repress)The Elements is an album by American saxophonist Joe Henderson, originally released in 1973 on Milestone.
1970 began a decade of discovery for Joe Henderson; a time to set aside the post-bop instrumentation and repertoire he was identified with and branch out into other realms. One of the most successful and challenging of these efforts that the Milestone label documented was the present four-part improvisation on the basic themes of Fire, Air, Water and Earth.
Assisting the tenor saxophonist was a group of sympathetic explorers--Alice Coltrane on piano and harp, violin original Michael White, bass giant Charlie Haden, and the multifaceted percussionist Kenneth Nash.
Latin American, Indian, and Native American strains enter the mix as Henderson applies the heat and mercurial invention of his more conventional work to these open-ended settings. While the music is enhanced with overdubbing in spots, the true magic of The Elements emanates from the musicians' collective genius at listening and responding to each other.1. Fire

I BelieveTranslucent Orange Colored Vinyl
Limited Edition - 1000 Copies
The third album, I Believe, was released in 2001, after which Haden took an extended break from the band, recording a solo album for Dreamworks Records (later released on his own Diamond Soul Recordings).
"Strip most music of its fashionable, genre-specific accoutrements and there's precious little left. Except country, perhaps. It's with this in mind that Los Angelenos Spain go about their lovelorn business. There are no frills, no zeitgeist nods here, just the simplicity of the strum, the slide and the hushed confessions of Josh Haden - son of jazz bassist Charlie and disciple of the songwriter's old skool.
"Three albums in, 'I Believe' is a substantial offering awash with humble entreaties and doe-eyed, lounge affectations. Sure, the moniker may flirt outrageously with Monsieur Schmaltz, but there really are some sweet, sweet sounds lurking beneath the initially perceived pretence. The slow-mo beauty of 'Mary' showcases Haden's almost electronic, pitch-perfect coo (and with all genre gimmicks gone, the voice has to be exact), while the self-explanatory, nu-prairie hum of 'You Were Meant For Me' betrays a romantic absolutism that Nick Cave would be proud of.1. Arbour Zena"I consider this one of my most richly lyrical and consistently inspired works," wrote Keith Jarrett of "Mirrors", the almost half-hour long concluding piece on Arbour Zena. "Jan Garbarek's contribution is irreplaceable and ecstatic." It is easy to agree that Arbour Zena as a whole is one of Jarrett's most exceptional albums. Evocative writing for strings, beautiful playing by Keith and Jan and by Charlie Haden at his most soulful, and a glowing panoramic production make this 1975 recording one of the finest of the early ECMs.

The Survivors' SuiteThe Survivors' Suite, recorded in 1976, is the crowning achievement of Keith Jarrett's "American Quartet" with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, and one of the all-time enduring masterpieces in the ECM catalogue. Melody Maker: "The Survivors' Suite is a brilliantly organized and full-blooded work which provides the perfect setting for all four talents. This is a very complete record. It creates its own universe and explores it thoroughly, leaving the listener awed and satisfied... An unashamedly ardent album, Jarrett's very finest." The Wire: "The labyrinthine composition seems to redefine 'intensity' each time it turns a corner. The drive toward the climax of Side Two is among the most moving in modern music, Dewey Redman absolutely titanic over the surging rhythms."

Free JazzMastered from the Original Master Tapes
Features a Double Quartet: One Band in Each Stereo Channel with Two Simultaneously Playing Rhythm Sections
Features Don Cherry, Scott LaFaro, Eric Dolphy, Charlie Haden, Freddie Hubbard Among Other Musicians
Modern improvisational jazz starts here. With one quartet placed in the left stereo channel and another situated in the right, Free Jazz unloads with two simultaneously playing rhythm sections and a 37-minute-plus title cut devised entirely on the spot.
Distinctive from the copycat attempts that followed, this 1960 magnum opus claims melody and harmony, solidifying Ornette Coleman's reputation as a compositional genius. Of course, the presence of Don Cherry, Scott LaFaro, Billy Higgins in the left channel and Coleman, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell in the right doesn't hurt.
Mastered from the original master tapes, ORG Music's analog edition has turned this classic into an audiophile spectacular. Due to the presentation of the recording in two distinct stereo channels, this album supremely benefits from the label's mastering efforts and decision to expand the music into wider grooves. Whirl (Awaiting Repress)Hersch's music: luxurious, free-flowing, unashamedly gorgeous jazz is idiosyncratically, unmistakably a creation of his own, David Hajdu wrote in a recent, riveting New York Times profile on Hersch's music and life. The piece detailed Hersch's recovery from a harrowing, near-death health battle and placed him in the forefront of contemporary, innovative jazz artists and chronicles his influence on many of today's brightest young musicians. Whirl is Hersch's first recording since undergoing intense physical therapy and achieving full recuperation.
Hersch is widely considered a genius on the piano. He moved to New York from Cincinnati in the 1970s, earning his credibility as a piano prodigy at Bradley's. His list of credits as a band leader, co-leader, sideman and soloist are astounding. He has worked extensively with jazz masters Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, and Jane Ira Bloom, Art Farmer, Toots Thielemans, Gary Burton, Bill Frisell, Sam Jones and Charlie Haden and has appeared on over 100 recordings. 80/81Pat Metheny's credibility with the jazz community went way up with the release of this package, a superb two-LP collaboration with a quartet of outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their electric commercial successes. From the disbanded Keith Jarrett American quartet came bassist Charlie Haden and tenor Dewey Redman - who alternates with and occasionally plays alongside tenor Michael Brecker - and Jack DeJohnette provides more combustible drumming than Metheny had ever experienced on record before. Yet Metheny's off-kilter wandering on solo electric guitar is a comfortable fit for the post-bop rhythmic crosscurrents of this music. Indeed, Haden and Metheny are in total sympathy, perhaps celebrating their mutual Missouri roots, and Metheny's difficult Pretty Scattered - which he mockingly described as Guitar Revenge! - nearly manages to stump even Redman and Brecker. The first of the Two Folk Songs is a great example of the Metheny folk-jazz fusion, with furious strummed guitar underpinning Brecker's melodic line and excursions on the outside and DeJohnette's spectacular drums. Another remarkable track is Open, a group improvisation that finds DeJohnette shaping the track's direction with a pushing solo and Metheny and the saxes emerging at the end. The two original LPs were organized so that the more distinctive Metheny fusions were on sides one and four and the overt jazz tracks occupied sides two and three.1. Two Folk Songs

The Avant-Garde (Mono Remaster)Mono Remaster
This album is rightfully co-credited to Don Cherry (trumpet), who ably trades blows with John Coltrane (tenor/soprano sax) throughout. The Avant-Garde also boasts the debut studio recording of Coltrane playing soprano sax -- on The Blessing -- in addition to his continuing advancements on tenor.
Although these tracks were recorded during the summer of 1960, they remained shelved for nearly six years.
Joining Coltrane and Cherry are essentially the rest of the members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, Ed Blackwell (drums) and Charlie Haden (bass) on Cherryco and The Blessing, as well as Percy Heath (bass) on the remaining three selections. This is fitting, as over half of the album consists of early Coleman compositions. Coltrane's integration into this band works with some extraordinarily fresh results. Neither Cherry nor Coltrane makes any radical departures on this album; however, it's the ability of each to complement the other both in terms of modal style and -- perhaps more importantly -- texture that lends heavily to the success of these sides. Cherry's brisk and somewhat nasal intonations on The Blessing mimic those of Miles Davis, albeit with shorter flourishes and heavily improvised lines. When combined with Coltrane's well-placed -- if not somewhat reserved -- solos, the mutual value of both is dramatically increased. Blackwell -- the only other musician besides Cherry and Coltrane to be featured on every track -- provides some non-conventional percussive accompaniment. His contributions to The Blessing and workout on the aptly titled Focus on Sanity are primal.

When You Wish Upon A StarBill Frisell (born 1951) is one of the leading guitarists in Jazz since the late 1980s. Frisell's eclectic music touches on Progressive Folk, Classical music, Country music, and more. He is known for using an array of effects to create unique sounds from his instrument.
His musical kinship with Miles Davis has been cited repeatedly in the music press. The New Yorker notes: Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet: in the hands of such radical thinkers, their instruments simply become different animals. And, like Davis, Frisell loves to have a lot of legroom when he improvises--the space that terrifies others quickens his blood.
His brand new album When You Wish Upon A Star featuresBill Frisell's arrangements and interpretations of Music for Film and Television. Featuring Petra Haden, a well known violinist and singer, she is or has been a member of several bands including: The Decemberists, Tito & Tarantula, That Dog and contributed to recordings by e.g. Beck, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and many more. The Atlantic Years (Box Set)10x 180 Gram Vinyl Box Set
Remastered By John Webber At AIR Studios
Ornette Coleman recorded one of the greatest bodies of work in jazz during a 22-month-long burst of creativity. Between 1959 and 1961, the saxophonist and composer released six studio albums on Atlantic Records that helped usher in the avant-garde, free jazz movement.
Those albums, along more than two hours of session outtakes, are featured together in the 10-LP boxed set ORNETTE COLEMAN: THE ATLANTIC YEARS, featuring newly remastered audio by John Webber at AIR Studios. Several of these titles are long out-of-print on vinyl. The Ornette Coleman Legacy, featuring six songs originally released for the first time in 1993 as part of Rhino's CD boxed set Beauty Is A Rare Thing, making its vinyl debut.
On most of his Atlantic albums, Coleman recorded with a quartet that included trumpeter Don Cherry, plus either Charlie Haden or Scott LaFaro on bass, and either Billy Higgins or Ed Blackwell on drums. One notable exception is Free Jazz, a ground-breaking single-track album where Coleman led a double quartet through a nearly 40-minute collective improvisation. The stereo mix used for the album separates the quartets into different channels; one on the right and the other on the left.
Coleman worked extensively with producer Nesuhi Ertegun on the music featured in this collection. Their partnership began in 1959 with Coleman's Atlantic debut, The Shape of Jazz To Come, an album the Library of Congress added to its National Recording Registry in 2012.
Among the albums included in THE ATLANTIC YEARS are three compilations that Atlantic released in the 1970's: The Art Of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), and To Whom Who Keeps A Record (1975.) These albums include outtakes from recording sessions for all six of Coleman's studio albums.LP 1
