The Blues World Of Little Walter

Little Walter cut eight tracks for the short-lived Parkway label, with Muddy Waters as a sideman (and ensemble vocalist). These sides convinced Chess to record the full Waters band. We fill out the album with other session by Waters-connected artists to give a picture of the Chicago blues scene just before the Chess sound took over. Hours were spent cleaning up the disk-to-tapes of the Walter sides (which had been widely bootlegged with surface noise). The studio tapes of the other tracks were clean. Marvelous and historic music now available again on LP with the original cover painting by Jeanette Walzak and liner notes by Jim O'Neal.

Muddy Waters Masterwork Live Album! In Stereo!

First Time Official Audiophile Vinyl - Stunning First Time Gatefold Cover

Mastered From The Authorized Chess Records Stereo Tapes By Joe Reagoso

Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) will always be known as one of the founding fathers of modern day blues. His legendary style of playing guitar, his unique vocal prowess and of course his stellar list of classic Chicago and Mississippi Delta blues tunes
have all gone on to influence generations upon generations of rock and blues performers worldwide.

With almost six decades in the music business, this Mississippi native began his career cutting early sides for defunct labels
before landing in Chicago in the early forties, where he began a long climb to the top of the blues world, later cutting a series of
hit sessions for Aristocrat which became Chess Records. Phil and Leonard Chess knew they had a kingpin on their hands when
Muddy started his endless stream of blues smashes. The label honored the man with his first live album simply titled Muddy Waters
At Newport 1960. Recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival, Muddy drove the crowd into a frenzy with his famous guitar licks and his
Delta growl, truly a thrilling presence on the stage.

Featuring an all-star band with the likes of the legendary James Cotton on harp and the masterful Otis Spann on piano, Muddy
Waters At Newport 1960 would go on to become one of the most revered albums in modern day Chicago blues history.

Kicking things off with one of his finest smash hits I Got My Brand On You, Muddy continues to rock the crowd through a
treasure trove of 8 more blues champions which made this one of the most important live recordings of all time. The album features
classic gems like his classics Got My Mojo Working, Baby Please Don't Go, and I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man. Noted for his stellar
guitar work, pretty much introducing his Chicago laden blues style to a whole new generation of guitar players, Muddy Waters At
Newport 1960 became truly a primer for a ton of rock and blues guitarists for years like Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat
and The Rolling Stones. Muddy broke down barriers for millions of music fans worldwide to enjoy rock and blues, making him along
with John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Robert Johnson one of the first pioneers of the blues and rock genre.

Friday Music is no stranger to the music of the legendary Chess Records arsenal of fine recordings. That is why we are so
very proud to announce another installment in The Muddy Waters/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his legendary

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Etta James (Pure Pleasure)

Etta James, one of the most fabulous and respected figures in the history of R&B music. Here are some of Miss Peaches' legendary pre-Chess recordings including the first session, cut on Thanksgiving Eve 1954, when she was just 16, which yielded "Roll With Me, Henry".

"Jean Mitchell and her sister Abbysinia came from New Orleans and were Creole-looking people," wrote our subject in her autobiography. " Jean was my age; Abbye was eight or nine years older. Jean and I started singing together. Soon Abbye joined in and, just like that, we became the Creolettes. We were project girls imitating the young rhythm and blues of the time. Mainly, though, we were intrigued with vocal harmony. We developed a tight three-way blend, imitating groups like the Spaniels, the Swallows, the Chords and the Spiders. One afternoon the Creolettes were singing at a record hop when who should show up but Hank Ballard and his superfine Midnighters. We were thrilled. When they heard us sing, they said something encouraging and, man, that's all we needed to hear. When they sang Work With Me, Annie, the place went wild. Next day the song was still on my mind. Answer songs were big back then, and then it occurred to me - why not answer Hank's hit? I liked doing spunky shit. So I wrote Roll With Me, Henry, a pushy little jiveass reply."

That blockbuster initiation was produced by the fabled Johnny Otis, the hipster also responsible for renaming Ms H and her gal pals Etta James and the Peaches: "The Peaches were pissed because I was getting the glory, but I was even more pissed than the Peaches because Georgia Gibbs came out with her Suzy Creamcheese version. I was happy to have any success, but I was enraged to see Her Nibbs singing the song on the Ed Sullivan Show while I was singing it in some funky dive in Watts." Providing the voice of "Henry" on Etta's original was Richard Berry, who went on to sing on and write many other songs for her, some of which, like Good Rockin' Daddy, also feature back-ups by those fabulous chicks, the Dreamers.

Not only has Etta James made some wonderful records in her illustrious career , she has also authored the brilliant autobiography Rage To Survive, from which all of the above quotations are borrowed.

    The Rockin' Chair Album

Howlin' Wolf is the third studio album from Chicago blues singer/guitarist/harmonica player Howlin' Wolf. It is a collection of six singles previously released by the Chess label from 1960 through 1962. Because of the illustration on its sleeve, the album is often called The Rockin' Chair Album, which was eventually adopted on subsequent pressings.

The album has had quite some influence on later musicians. In 1966, fellow Chess artist Koko Taylor recorded a cover version of "Wang Dang Doodle" which reached #4 on the Billboard's R&B Charts and became a minor crossover hit. Earlier in 1963 Sam Cooke released a single of "Little Red Rooster" making #7 on the R&B Singles chart and #11 on the Hot 100. In 1969 the songs "Shake for Me" and "Back Door Man" were used in the lyrics to the Led Zeppelin song "Whole Lotta Love".

Hoodoo Man Blues is not only Junior Wells' initial appearance on record, it is damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45's by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc. but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of limitations of juke-box/airplay promotion as Delmark does here. Go Bo Diddley

The Bo Diddley/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series Begins!

    Bo Diddley's Masterwork Album!

First Time Official Audiophile Vinyl - Stunning First Time Gatefold Cover

Mastered From The Authorized Chess Records Mono Tapes By Joe Reagoso

Bo Diddley (Elias McDaniel) was truly an American original. There will never be another Bo Diddley nor anyone in the music
industry who could influence generations upon generations of aspiring rock 'n rollers like Bo Diddley has and continues to this
day, even years after his short time on earth.

Celebrating six decades in the music business, this Mississippian native initially captivated millions of kids in the fifties
with his first recordings like Bo Diddley and Say Man. He drove the rockers mad with his famous guitar riffs and boogie beat,
filled with poetic lyrics and a thrilling presence on the stage.

Bringing his original "Bo Diddley Beat" to Chess Records in early 1955, the Chicago based label and the pioneer rocker hit
a goldmine immediately with his arsenal of tunes that he presented to Phil and Leonard Chess. A lot of these great songs became
top charting singles which culminated in his masterwork album Go! Bo Diddley.

Kicking things off with one of his finest smash hits Cracking Up, Bo roars through a treasure trove of 11 more champions
which made this one of the most important and emulated albums of all time. The album features classic gems like his classics
Dearest Darling, Say Man, Don't Let It Go and The Clock Struck Twelve. Noted for his stellar guitar work, pretty much introducing his Bo Diddley Beat riff to a whole new generation of guitar players, Go! Bo Diddley was truly a primer for a ton of rock and
blues artists for years like Eric Burdon and The Animals, George Thorogood, Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and
    The Yardbirds.

Bo Diddley opened the doors for millions of music fans around the world to enjoy rock and blues, making him along with
Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Little Richard as one of the first pioneers of the popular recording business that we all enjoy to
    this day.

    The Lost Tapes

In concert in the late '60s and early '70s, Muddy Waters was still tearing it up in his grand old style, as is evident on this previously unreleased concert recording from 1971. Muddy had not yet begun to bring the younger generation into his band, so bona fide Chicago blues vets like pianist Pinetop Perkins and drummer Willie Big Eyes Smith are on hand to provide that classic '50s Chess sound on a program of gems from Muddy's glory days. The urgency and fire of his earlier recordings is replaced here by a more seasoned, understated approach but instead of detracting from the performances, it adds a deeper level of ominous insinuation to Muddy's sultry tales of lust.

    Hoodoo Man Blues

One of the all-time great urban blues records and the best-seller in the famed Delmark catalog. Hoodoo Man Blues is so full of bravado and snap it'll make you feel tough just listening to it. Not all of the Delmark titles were recorded very well, but this one certainly was. And at 45 RPM, this now stands as the undisputed definitive version. Hoodoo Man Blues, which features Buddy Guy on guitar, is not only Junior Wells' first LP appearance, it's damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45s by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc., but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of the limitations of juke box/airplay promotion. Hoodoo Man Blues went a long way in the popularization of real Chicago blues and of Junior Wells.

    Bo Diddley Is A Lover

Mastered From The Original Chess Mono Reels

Delivering a devastating punch to rock's early '60s doldrums, Bo Diddley Is a Lover bursts at the seams with Bo's uncompromising, rockin' beat. Yep. Industry and the government may have cleaned up fellow '50s rockers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis and Gene Vincent, but they didn't get to Bo -- a defiant rocker to the core.

By the time of the 1961 sessions for this album, Bo had relocated from Chicago to DC, to record at his own home studio. He used his artistic freedom to his complete advantage, churning out a series of killer records unfettered by bureaucratic interference. Considered the pinnacle of his collaboration with Lady Bo (aka, Peggy Jones), Is a Lover is also one of Bo's most diverse. Along with rockers like "Hong Kong, Mississippi" and "Bo Diddley Is Loose," the LP also features fantastic instrumentals such as "Congo," straight blues ("Bo's Blues," that is), a call-and-answer with old sparring partner Jerome Green ("Bo's Vacation") and the fabulous ballad, "Love Is a Secret," with backing vocals from a young DC girl group, the Impalas (who would hit the charts three years later as the Jewels). On this album, they're also in fine form on the rocking "Not Guilty" and the title track. And they're not the only gals contributing, as Lady Bo shines on the axe throughout - particularly on the exotic instro, "Aztec." Not to be outdone, Bo closes the album with the badass instro, "Quick Draw" - with strings pulled and twisted to their limit.

This 180-gram edition, properly mastered from the original Chess mono reels, is where you need to be on this album. For sure, for sure.

    Star Trek: Into Darkness

Music From The Motion Picture STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

    Music Composed by:

    Michael Giacchino

(Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Star Trek, The Incredibles)

This summer, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Composer Michael Giacchino - an Academy Award winner for his score for Up - reunites with director J.J. Abrams to steer the Enterprise through its darkest territory yet.

    Going Back Home

Wilko Johnson, legendary guitarist with Canvey Island pub rock pioneers Dr Feelgood, and Roger Daltrey, lead singer of rock giants The Who will release
a joint album on the world famous Chess label which has been resurrected especially for the purpose. The album features at total of 11
tracks, 10 of which are Wilko originals from both his Dr Feelgood days and solo years while one track is a cover version of Bob Dylan's Highway 61
Revisited classic "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window".

The album mostly features re-makes of vintage Wilko gems, including the Feelgoods' "All Through The City", "Keep It Out Of Sight" and "Going Back
Home" - the latter co-written in 1975 with Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' guitarist Mick Green - plus "Everybody's Carrying A Gun", originally recorded by his
post-Feelgoods group The Solid Senders, and the solo '80s rockers "Ice On The Motorway" and "I'm Going To Keep It To Myself". There is also a hidden

    Wayne Cochran

Wayne Cochran! The exclamation point is there for a reason. Known as "The White Knight of Soul," Cochran was flamboyant in both voice and attire. Crowned by a swooping white pompadour, he held back nothing on stage. His performance style was very reminiscent of fellow Georgia native Little Richard Penniman. Like Penniman, music led Cochran to his current career as a minister. Anyone who's ever witnessed a fire-and-brimstone southern gospel service can see the connection between gospel's passion and r&b's groove.

Issued by Chess Records in 1967, Wayne Cochran! captured the outrageous energy of his live show within the album's grooves. This explosive collection of songs proved that Cochran deserved to share the label home of r&b greats like Etta James, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Rather than a traditional artist portrait, the front cover features an outline of his white pompadour against a black background. Simple and direct, it stood in stark relief against the sea of day-glo, psychedelic imagery of the day. To put it another way, the cover art clearly conveyed that this album was all killer, no filler.

The original mono version of this LP is incredibly rare and changes hands for princely sums. However, there is no need to empty the savings account now that Sundazed Music has prepared a righteous reissue, in glorious mono! Sourced from the original analog master tapes, this Sundazed edition is 180gm of concentrated soul. Just add a turntable and watch the party spring to life!

Muddy Waters 100 is the centennial celebration of his birthday (April 4, 1915) and also a commemoration of this immense legacy. This compilation covers the broad spectrum of the Waters catalog from Country Blues to the pioneering Chess studio sessions in Chicago.

Johnny Winter (who produced four Muddy Waters albums in the 1970's) was brought in as guest slide guitarist on I'm Ready, and harmonica wizard James Cotton livens up Good News, and I Feel So Good, adding an authentic touch, as he played on the original recordings in the late 1950's. Folk Singer has been an audiophile staple for years. It always gets a bunch of play at hi-fi shows. It's a no-doubter demonstration disc. But never before has it sounded like this!

There are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters' Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the first and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Muddy of course started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and he's clearly very comfortable in this return to his roots, which was designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music.

Muddy's supporting cast includes a very young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon at the upright bass and Clifton James on drums.

This recording has enormous presence with ample room for Muddy's booming voice to resonate.
