Every musician has his area of expertise and for Chet Baker that area was the ballad. Therefore, this album dedicated entirely to ballads, gives listeners a chance to hear Baker doing what he does bestand when Chet Baker does what he does best, he does it better than any other trumpet player in the history of jazz. For this session, recorded on 30 December 1958 at NYCs Reeves Sound Studios, the poster child of West Coast cool jazz (who had just turned 29) assembled a superlative East Coast sextet that featured the unusual front-line combination of flute (Herbie Mann), trumpet (Baker) and baritone (Pepper Adams), departing occasionally from this format, however, to showcase the guitar playing of Kenny Burrell. Pianist Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), all well-known for their association with Miles Davis, and all some of the top names in jazz are also featured here, along with drummer Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This album represents some of the last studio work Baker did before emigrating permanently to Europe. It also includes one of Bakers own compositions, Early Morning Mood, recorded at the same studio and with the same line-up on 19 January 1959, as a bonus track.

    Chet is Back!

Mastered from the Original Tapes and Stunning Audiophile-Grade Sonics: You Will Not Hear a Better Pressing!

Chet is back! And how. In a career filled with ups and downs, Chet Baker sounds divine on this 1962 set of bop-driven tunes and elegant standards cut in Italy after the trumpeter's two-year hiatus from recording. Reason for its superiority owes to a sextet anchored by burgeoning, young European musicians such as saxophonist Bobby Jaspar, pianist Amedeo Tommasi, guitarist Rene Thomas, and bassist Benoit Quersin.

Compositionally, ballads (including These Foolish Things and the only new composition, Ballata In Forma Di Blues) are tucked in between a surfeit of engaging, uptempo pieces. Yet the most staggering revelation here, aside from the fact that, no exaggeration, Chet Is Back! might contain the cool musician's most gorgeous playing, is the version of Over the Rainbow, given a reading that encapsulates the classic songs longing, hope, and beauty. Noteworthy, too, are Jaspar's statement-making performances.

Now, an even 50 years after its original release, Chet Is Back! benefits from the audiophile-quality sound it's always deserved courtesy of ORG Music and being mastered from the original master tapes. Few, if any, audiophile pressings of Baker's music match the tones and timbres present on this astoundingly transparent reissue. It's what jazz is all about.

Recorded in Rome, Italy at RCA's studios, Chet Is back! is the 1962 studio album by the undisputed master of the trumpet, Chet Baker. Backed by a group of up-and-coming European jazz musicians, which included Belgian saxophonist Bobby Jaspar, Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas, Italian pianist Amedeo Tommasi, French bassist Benoit Quersin, and Swiss drummer Daniel Humair, according to critics Chet Baker may have never sounded better.

The album features compositions by other jazz musicians like Thelonious Monk's Well, You Needn't, Charlie Parker's Barbados and Sonny Rollins' Pent Up House. The album also includes an original composition by Amedeo Tommasi entitled Ballata in forma di blues. Ballads are featured as well, including the classic Academy Award-winning Over the Rainbow.

The numbers heard on Chet Baker & Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 -- fresh from an extended European stay. Sessions were held every day from the 23rd through the 31st, which resulted in such classic titles as The Route, Chet Baker Sings, and Chet Baker Quintet at the Forum -- which is also available under the title Young Chet -- as well as Chet Baker & Crew. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). Joining the combo on both the original as well as the alternate take of To Mickey's Memory and Pawnee Junction is Bill Loughbrough (chromatic tympani). His unmistakable percussive accents and tuned drum solos give these West Coast bop tracks uniquely Polynesian intonations. The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on Slightly Above Moderate and the Urso-credited composition Halema -- named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on Worryin' the Life Out of Me. Timmons also boasts notable contributions throughout. His playful and scampering style dresses up the bluesy Lucius Lu and Line for Lyons, among others. The latter is also notable as it contains the sole Baker vocal on this set.

    Chet Baker With Strings

    Import

Chet Baker was one of the representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement whose life and music appeals to the imagination of the people the most.

His heroin addiction is well documented, his exploits and misadventures are wrapped in legendary anecdotes.
But his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent.

Chet Baker has one of the most recognizable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate, with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings.

Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.

The players are lifted up into the air like a leaf on the breeze by Montrose's delicate string arrangements, while the Baker and Sims interplay on songs like 'Loved Walked In' are amongst the best recorded in jazz history.

This fully instrumental album is a classic, and now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1953!

    Chet Baker Quartet

This session was recorded at Studio Pathe-Magellan in Paris, on Monday October 24, 1955 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On October 24th only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet: Peter littman had returned to America, and his seat was now accupied by Nils-Bertil 'Bert' Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who'd accompanied Lars Gullin. At the keyboard was an almost-unknown pianist named GÉrard Gustin who'd just been signed to a contract by Eddie Barclay. Given the context, they were obliged to fall back on standards. Chet knew how to play these better than anyone. He chose eight: These Foolish Things, which stayed in his quartet's rÉpertoire for a while, and five others, which the trumpeter performs here for the first time: There's a Small Hotel, Autumn In New York, Summertime, You Go To My Head, Tenderly - and two - I'll Remember April and Lover Man - that he'd done less than ten days earlier together with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance was still something Chet refused to accept. Given this state of affairs, the whole session exudes a kind of sadness that's impossible to put down, whatever the choice of tune or tempo.

Never before had Chet been as totally moving as he is throughout You Go To My Head.

    Chet Baker Sings

Chet Baker made his musical debut in 1952 as an integral member of Gerry Mulligan's modernist piano-less quartet, by all accounts marking the beginning of the post-bop West Coast style. So it came as quite a surprise when Baker made his singing debut on this seminal 1954 release at the age of 24. Baker's sideline singing here reveals his songful roots in the swing of Harry James and other formative influences while the innocence of his All-American vocals make for an eerily cool listening experience as well as an authentically satisfying one. Throughout, pianist Russ Freeman's warm, solid touch serves as the perfect foil for Baker's affectless romanticism as heard to stunning affect on the definitive version of My Funny Valentine found herein.

    Chet Baker In New York

A uniformly brilliant effort from cool-toned trumpeter Chet Baker in his first ever appearance as a leader for the New York-based label Riverside Records,
In New York is the epitome of West Coast cool meets East Coast sensibility. Teaming up with pianist Al Haig, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, bassist
Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, Baker's laid-back mastery is on full display throughout this historic session.

Marked by an uncanny group unity, which gives rise to many outstanding supporting solos, the tracks captured on In New York alternatingly effervesce
with a California-cool introspection ("Polka Dots And Moonbeams") and percolate with driving intensity ("Hotel 49"). An excellent survey of Baker's style
and prowess as a leader, Chet Baker In New York is highly recommended as THE album to own for anyone curious about diving in to his illustrious
    catalog.

    Chet is Back (Speakers Corner)

Forty-two years ago, Chet Baker - one of the most tragic figures of jazz who lived on the fast lane and ruined himself with drugs and alcohol - was constantly on the road from one European jazz club to another. Local rhythm groups were not always top notch so it was only logical to pick the very best from several countries for a film-music production in Italy. And it was equally logical that RCA's Italian subsidiary brought the musicians into the studio in January 1962.

With one exception, the eight titles on this disc are all so-called standards. The two winds demand total concentration from the rhythm section while maintaining relaxed and laid-back harmonic patterns. And this is something the Italian Tommasi, the Belgian Thomas, the Frenchman Quersin and the Swiss Humair carry off with an air of nonchalance. The two ballads These Foolish Things and the only new composition Ballata In Forma Di Blues are tucked in between the other numbers and give the listener space to breathe. They are surrounded by numbers with a fast tempo, all of which demonstrate Chet Baker's and Bobby Jaspar's high standard of musicianship. And then there is Over The Rainbow, whose theme is coupled with another tragic figure of music history, Judy Garland: Chet on his trumpet conjures up pure magic in the middle section.

Happily, these recordings - made in Rome in 1962 - are not purely restricted to collectors living in the Sixties. This re-release on LP now offers the opportunity to listen to some excellent music and to enjoy the cover - just as it was on the original recording: a priceless gem!

    Musicians:

    • Chet Baker (trumpet)

    • Bobby Jaspar (tenor saxophone, flute)

    • Amadeo Tommasi (piano)

    • RenÉ Thomas (guitar)

    • Benoit Quersin (bass)

    • Daniel Humair (drums)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Thinking In Textures

2012 was an incredible year for singer/songwriter Chet Faker aka Nick Murphy. In March he played stand-out performances at SXSW, including a performance at the Filter Magazine party and was touted as a 'must see' act by The Austin Chronicle.

All of this momentum led to a record deal with Downtown Records who are set to drop his debut release Thinking In Textures. The 7-song set's first single Terms and Conditions is a gorgeously penned track that has been garnering airplay across the globe.

Hailing from Melbourne's tight-knit disco and house music scene and taking elements from his acoustic past, Chet Faker has carved out a unique style that fuses personal stories of love and loss with an electronica soul that reaches far beyond his homeland.

Shrouded in secrecy, hidden behind an alias and disguised by a beard, Chet Faker enjoys mystery. He came to everyone's attention when his cover of Blackstreet's classic No Diggity hit #1 on Hype Machine. But far from rushing into the limelight, Chet built on the popularity of No Diggity through a series of tracks released online, creating an insatiable hunger from fans for more from this part jazz, part soul and part electronic artist.

She Was Too Good To Me

Chet Baker was one of the most important representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement. His heroin addiction is well documented with his exploits and misadventures wrapped in legendary anecdotes, but thankfully his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent. Chet Baker has one of the most recognisable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings. She Was Too Good To Me was released in 1974 on Creed Taylor's CTI label after a 4 year absence from the scene. And what a comeback: excellent vocal Cool Jazz tunes are interlude with instrumental goodness from the undisputed master of the trumpet.

    Mister Guitar (Speakers Corner)

At a time when rock 'n' roll-crazy teenagers in the USA and elsewhere were dancing their feet off to the beat of Elvis Presley and Bill Haley, probably no one was interested as to where this music actually originated. The focal point of the folk movement was Tennessee: it was here that everyone came who had used their grandfathers' songs and fiddle tunes to create the pop-oriented Nashville Sound, a sound which became American music's trademark and export hit.

Chet Atkins is one of the people who helped to create this special sound and who kept an Argus-eyed watch on its originality and development. In addition to the recordings he made in his own studio, he was also a producer and studio guitarist for RCA.

This album features Chet Atkins as "Mister Guitar", who - as a soloist - only allowed a small and highly discreet rhythm group to accompany him. The result is a refreshingly pure and unadulterated steel-string sound without frills and padding and so has little in common with the commercial country music of the masses. With his relaxed, technically perfect and highly variable playing technique, Atkins shows us what the New World has to offer in the way of folk music: highly melodic numbers which delight the ear with the simplest of means.

    In Hollywood (Speakers Corner)

When stringed instruments are employed, it is often an indication that the protagonist is somewhat mature. It is an unwritten law that sooner or later every rock, jazz or folk musician will bathe in soft tones for once. Chet Atkins, however, was light years away from his artistic zenith, came up with a wealth of ideas and was in a great position with regards to recording facilities when he set down his Hollywood album in 1959. Two years earlier, "Mister Guitar" had become boss of the newly founded RCA Studio in Nashville. Here he recorded several records, which reflected his ideas of an appealing, catchy Nashville Sound as an answer to the declining rock and roll.

The Hollywood numbers were by no means dynamite movie tracks or showstoppers. Dennis Farnon's delicate, lush arrangements rather more pay homage to the maestro with his no-frills art of playing. The gentle Italo evergreen Santa Lucia, Chaplin's beautiful Limelight with its violins and the time-honoured Greensleeves - all of them flawlessly performed - are a real pleasure for the ears. Atkins greatly admired the superb string orchestra and two years later he re-recorded the album using the tapes from the Hollywood session to create this new version.
