Chris Thile & Brad MehldauNonesuch Records labelmates mandolinist/singer Chris Thile and pianist Brad Mehldau, longtime admirers of each other's work, first toured as a duo in 2013. At the end of 2015, they played a two-night stand at New York City's Bowery Ballroom before going into the studio to record Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau, a mix of covers and original songs.
Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau come from different worlds but the same species, says the New York Times. Mr. Thile is a progressive-bluegrass pacesetter; Mr. Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years. Both are team players ... Both love Bach and the Beatles, and both have developed fan bases bigger and broader (and younger) than their genre silos can accommodate.
The two musicians first performed together in September 2011 as part of Mehldau's residency at London's Wigmore Hall. The Guardian said of that performance, Mehldau struck up his signature rocking chord vamp over which lightly struck motifs swell to sensuous extended melodies. Thile kept cajoling him with percussive snaps, flying runs, and chords strummed fast enough to sound as seamless as a purring strings section, inducing Mehldau to bat back the playful provocation with stinging rejoinders.
MacArthur Fellow and A Prairie Home Companion host Chris Thile is the founding member of Punch Brothers, which a Boston Globe reviewer called the tightest, most impressive live band I have ever seen. The band has released four albums on Nonesuch beginning in 2008: Punch, Antifogmatic, Who's Feeling Young Now?, and The Phosphorescent Blues. Thile's other releases on the label include Sleep with One Eye Open with Michael Daves; Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile and Bass & Mandolin-the latter of which won a Grammy Award; a solo record of Bach violin sonatas and partitas; and A Dotted Line with his longtime band Nickel Creek. He also recently collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer on the double Grammy Award-winning album The Goat Rodeo Sessions.
Brad Mehldau's Nonesuch debut was the 2004 solo disc Live in Tokyo and includes six records with his trio: House on Hill, Day Is Done, Brad Mehldau Trio Live, Ode, Where Do You Start, and Blues and Ballads. His collaborative records on the label include Love Sublime, Highway Rider, Metheny Mehldau, Metheny Mehldau Quartet, Modern Music, and Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. Mehldau's additional solo albums on Nonesuch include Live in Marciac and last year's 8-LP/4-CD 10 Years Solo Live, which the New York Times says contains some of the most impressive pianism he has captured on record. Earlier this year, he released a duo album with Joshua Redman, Nearness, of which the Wall Street Journal said: Few records released this year better define what jazz sounds like today, even if there isn't a hip noun to describe it.1. UNIM-BLU-5196xRobert Glasper Experiment
Double BookedRobert Glasper is a man of many talents. Certainly, he's both an inarguably accomplished jazz pianist and a first-rate composer. But what Glasper does best is pick drummers. With 2007's In My Element, he provided Damion Reid with a platform to record nothing less than the drum performance of the year. For this album, Glasper teams up with Chris Dave, and the results are astonishing. It's a concept album, sort of. The first half features the Trio (Glasper, Dave, and bassist Vicente Archer) on a handful of originals and a take on Thelonius Monk's Think of One. Throughout, the piano and drums intertwine with a complex integrity that sounds deceptively effortless. Then comes the Experiment: Derrick Hodge replaces Archer with an electric bass; Casey Benjamin adds saxes and vocoder; Bilal and Mos Def drop in for vocal cameos. The Experiment's five tracks differ in texture and depth from the Trio's set, but the adventurousness of the performances and the gorgeous lyricism of Dave's drumming fuse the album's halves into a single musical statement that makes for the year's best jazz album so far. --Jason Kirk1. The Dreamer Is The DreamFor his third ECM album as a leader, Chris Potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. The group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ECM's many recordings from New York over the past decade: keyboardist David Virelles, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. The Dreamer Is the Dream features Potter on tenor saxophone - the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation - in the striking opener Heart in Hand and such album highlights as Yasodhara, as well as on soprano sax (Memory and Desire) and bass clarinet (the title track).
Potter is an artist who employs his considerable technique in service of music rather than spectacle, says The New Yorker, and his composing develops in texture and atmosphere with every album. Along with his previous ECM releases, Imaginary Cities and The Sirens, he has appeared on some of the label's most acclaimed discs, including Paul Motian's classic Lost in a Dream and Dave Holland's Grammy Award-winning What Goes Around.

Imaginary Cities is the recording premiere of saxophonist Chris Potter s new Underground Orchestra. At the core of this larger ensemble is the personnel of his long-established Underground quartet with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith now joined by two bassists, a string quartet, and Potter s old comrade from Dave Holland Quintet days, vibes and marimba man Steve Nelson. The title composition is a suite, panoramic in its reach, with movements subtitled Compassion , Dualities , Disintegration and Rebuilding . The scope of the work, and its contrasting moods and thematic development, inspire some of Potter s finest playing. His saxes fly high above his idealized cityscapes or launch into dialogues or group improvising with its gifted inhabitants. Four further pieces Lament , Firefly , Sky and Shadow Self extend the feeling of the suite, successfully combining both tightly written material and very open areas involving all members of the orchestra. References are multi-idiomatic and multicultural, and Potter, who counts Charlie Parker with Strings amongst his formative enthusiasms, had Arabic and Indian string sections in mind, as well as contemporary composition, when shaping this material. Imaginary Cities was recorded in December 2013 in New York s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. Release of the album is followed by US performances with the Underground Orchestra in New York and San Francisco.1. Lament

Shine On Rainy DayOut on Low Country Sounds/Elektra Records, Shine On Rainy Day was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, etc.) and recorded live over four days in Nashville.
Of the music and working with producer (and cousin) Dave Cobb, Brent comments, "It's not as good as it's going to get. But if it's the last thing that I ever do, if I died the day after it came out, then thank God I was able to record it because the songs and the production, it was everything I wanted to say. Finally."
Dave adds, "I wanted to work with Brent for very selfish reasons. When he lifts a pen and opens his mouth, it sounds like home. I did his record because he's part of the fabric of South Georgia and the soundtrack to my family. Pure rural country soul filled music."
Already receiving notice, Brent was recently featured on WXPN's World CafÉ (listen to the full session here), while Rolling Stone featured him as one of their "30 Must-See Acts" at CMA Fest 2016, asserting, "Live, he's every bit the charming raconteur, setting up catchy rural anthems that have the loose and earthy feel of a front porch sing-along."
Additionally, earlier this year, Brent was featured on Dave's widely praised Southern Family compilation-contributing the song "Down Home" and writing the standout "Sweet By & By," which was recorded by Miranda Lambert. Of "Down Home," Wide Open Country declares, " one of the most earnest and accurate retellings of everyday life in rural Georgia. The mixture of Cobb's charming southern drawl, brilliant storytelling and flawless production melds into a track that is impossible to resist."
Born in Ellaville, GA (population 1,609), Brent moved to Nashville in 2008 and has since found widespread success as a writer with songs recorded by Lambert ("Old Shit"), Kenny Chesney ("Don't It"), Luke Bryan ("Tailgate Blues"), David Nail ("Grandpa's Farm"), Kellie Pickler ("Rockaway") and Eli Young Band ("Go Outside and Dance") among others.1. Side PonyLake Street Dive announce their Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony. The four band members-drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael McDuck Olson-worked with Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Secret Sisters) on the record.
Side Pony takes its name from a song on the record that refers to a whimsical hairstyle, but it also serves as a metaphor for Lake Street Dive's philosophy and personality as a band. As Kearney puts it, When we were settling on the album title, that one just stuck out to us as embodying the band's spirit. We've always been this somewhat uncategorizable, weird, outlying, genre-less band. That's the statement we wanted to make with this record: be yourself.
Olson echoes her sentiment: It has also come to mean anything you're doing for the sheer joy of it. We have always 'rocked our side pony.' Now we have a convenient phrase for it.
Cobb's working method was to keep the recording fast and loose, as live-in-the-studio as possible, and to embrace the unorthodox. This provided Lake Street Dive with a welcome challenge: an opportunity to experiment with sound and arrangements and to collaborate on songwriting in a way the band had never attempted before.
Calabrese says of the recording process, Dave's process was mercurial, changing direction quickly, going from 'we don't have anything' to 'we've got it!' He continues, We weren't always so sure. But then we'd listen to a comp and we'd agree that he'd heard something we hadn't.
Price adds, It was great to see, through this particular recording process, how beautifully our individual strengths complement each other.1. Godawful Things

Sleeping Through The WarProduced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Rival Sons)
and mixed/engineered by UK-bred young-gun Eddie Spear, All Them Witches'
"Sleeping Through The War" is the quartet's most bold and well-crafted record
to date. The album's creation marks the f irst time in the band's history that
a record was written before entering the studio. This process allowed for an
alignment of the band's art, desire and time. Convening in Nashville for only
six days after a year of relentlessly touring their New West Records debut
"Dying Surfer Meets Their Maker," the band's spirit coalesced in a rhythm of
statement and melody that simply needs to be heard...repeatedly.
With the guidance of Cobb and Spear, "Sleeping Through The War" captures the
truest energy of the group, full blast, fun and contemplative. The record was
made with volume in mind. "Sleeping Through The War" is meant to be played
loud, cranked up and without reservation. Feel it live through your stereo
system or listen to it speak in tongues through your headphones.
The sounds are nothing without the songs and the songs are nothing without
the lyrics. This record is a result of constant touring, world travel,
overstimulated/divided humanity, and a learning of awareness and compassion.

REDD-THI-2310xMary Chapin Carpenter
The Things That We Are Made OfThe Things That We Are Made Of, the new full-length album by renowned and beloved singer, songwriter and performer Mary Chapin Carpenter, will be released on Lambent Light Records via Thirty Tigers.
Produced by 2016 Producer of the Year Grammy-nominee Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton), the album features eleven new songs, including the lead track "Something Tamed Something Wild. Of the song, Rolling Stone praises, " beautifully sums up where she's been and sets the stage for what's yet to come 'Something Tamed Something Wild' and indeed the entire new album finds the songwriter at her most thoughtful and also at times sweetly whimsical, perfectly capturing the buoyant spirit of her early successes and also serving as a reminder that she remains one of the most grounded, sentient songwriters of her generation."
The Things That We Are Made Of was recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium and Low Country Sound studios during the spring and summer of 2015. In addition to Carpenter (vocals, electric/acoustic guitar), the album features Cobb (electric/acoustic/gut string guitar, percussion, Moog, Mellotron), Annie Clements (bass), Brian Allen (bass), Chris Powell (drums, percussion), Mike Webb (piano, B3 organ, reed organ, Mellotron, Fender Rhodes) and Jimmy Wallace (piano, B3 organ).
Of the album, Carpenter comments, "Working with Dave felt great from the first day of our sessions. He is always willing to try something new, believes that 'yes' is the only answer, and surrounds himself with wonderfully talented and generous musicians; by the end of the project, I felt as if I was a part of a new family." Cobb adds, "I wanted to work with Mary Chapin because very few people can cut with words like she can. She's an absolute poet and legend. I was so happy to collaborate on this album together."
Over the course of her acclaimed career, Carpenter has recorded 14 albums and sold over 14 million records. With hits like "Passionate Kisses" and "He Thinks He'll Keep Her," she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards, two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals and is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Most recently, in 2014, Carpenter released her acclaimed debut orchestral album, Songs From The Movie. Arranged and co-produced by six-time Grammy winner Vince Mendoza, the record is comprised of ten previously recorded compositions including "Between Here and Gone" and "Come On Come On." Since it's release, Carpenter has performed alongside the New York Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the London Concert Orchestra, the L.A. Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra among many others.1. Something Tamed Something Wild
