Pete Townshend's Classic QuadropheniaAs a leading icon of the British music revolution of the 1960s, Pete Townshend made his name by creating the power chord, smashing guitars onstage, and penning anthems of teenage rebellion like My Generation.
Now, at almost 70 years old and half a century after he penned the archetypal rock lyric Hope I die before I get old , Townshend has created a classical version of one of The Who s landmark albums Quadrophenia for a symphony orchestra, opera singer and choir.
The new symphonised version of Quadrophenia, an album originally released by The Who in 1973, was orchestrated by Rachel Fuller, a professional composer, orchestrator and singer-songwriter in her own right and also the partner of Pete Townshend.
It will be released by the Deutsche Grammophon label, internationally renowned for its repertoire of classical and opera music, and launched next summer with a world premiere concert at the Royal Albert Hall, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Oriana Choir.
The project is the latest chapter in Townshend s lifelong mission to break the three-minute mould of the traditional pop song and take rock music to a higher artistic level. In the 1960s he defined the concept of the rock opera with Tommy, taking it a stage further with Quadrophenia.
Conceived and written by Townshend in 1973, Quadrophenia went on to become a feature film and a theatre production, and was performed in its entirety on The Who s most recent live tour. For the last three years Townshend has worked closely with Rachel Fuller on brand-new arrangements for orchestra, soloists and choir.
Recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2014 at London s legendary Air Studios, the new incarnation of this classic rock opera is conducted by Robert Ziegler and features popular British tenor Alfie Boe on vocals, with Townshend himself on electric guitar and performing cameo vocal roles. Townshend will reprise his roles at the live world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 5 July 2015, alongside the RPO, Ziegler, Boe and other star guests.
The rock superstar began work on the project as part of his plan to leave a legacy of all his work arranged for orchestra as sheet music, for future generations to enjoy. Townshend hopes the new work will go on to become a regular part of the orchestral repertoire and boost attendance at classical concerts.
A lot of major symphony orchestras are in trouble because their audience is getting old and the younger audiences prefer softer stuff, such as film soundtrack music, he explains. I think that Quadrophenia would reinvigorate their audiences and bring in people who might not otherwise go to see a symphony orchestra perform without lights and fireworks and a movie screen.
Rachel Fuller, who was born in the year Quadrophenia was first released, admits she had never heard The Who s album until several years after she first met Townshend in a London recording studio, while he was rehearsing for The Who s 1996 tour of that album and she was working with Ute Lemper.
I loved it as soon as I heard it about ten years ago, she says. For me it's been an act of love to orchestrate it for Pete. It's also been a joy to work on because it is very orchestral by nature, even as a rock album, so it was very easy to arrange for an orchestra. And I've remained really faithful to the original tracks because he's the composer and I want to honour his work.1. I Am The Sea

Black Rose: A Rock Legend (Awaiting Repress)Recorded in 1979 as a follow-up to their mega successful Live And Dangerous, Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and new guitar sensation Gary Moore forged ahead once again with their trademark hard rock sound and continued their assault on audiences worldwide with Black Rose: A Rock Legend.
With the powerful drum entrance of Brian Downey, the opener Do Anything You Want To kicks the album into full gear. Featuring the dual lead guitars of Scott Gorham and Gary Moore, known for creating some of the finest and most familiar guitar riffs in music history, they continue their legendary style with this metal anthem. Phil Lynott's vocal and bass attack notched up another career defining song as well, which served the band well for years and has truly been one of their most revered tunes.
Seven more incredible performances from these rock and roll warriors continue to thrill the listener including more Phil Lynott hard rock classics like Waiting For An Alibi and the stellar With Love. More rockers flow like the funk infused Got To Give It Up and the punk metal feel of Toughest Street In Town. Even the heartwarming ballad My Sarah, which showcases a softer side of Lynott's writing and vocal ability, truly made this album a fan favorite for years to come. The incredible album closer Rosin Dubh (Black Rose) A Rock Legend truly emphasizes the band's love for their homeland of Ireland and pays tribute to their heritage in a hard rock Celtic performance never to be duplicated on wax ever again.
Tragically, we lost the musical genius Phil Lynott in 1986 and more recently the passing of guitar legend Gary Moore. This was their first collaboration together as members of Thin Lizzy, and with the impeccable musicianship of Scott Gorham and Brian Downey all delivering the goods, Black Rose: A Rock Legend is considered one of their greatest achievements in their enduring album catalog.
Mastered impeccably from the original Warner Music tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood with Ron McMaster, Friday Music is very honored and enthusiastic to welcome back the much heralded Thin Lizzy classic Black Rose: A Rock Legend for the first time on 180g audiophile vinyl in North America.
To make this more of a treasure for your limited edition Thin Lizzy collection, Friday is also including a first time gatefold cover which features the original album cover art as well as the original photos and artwork included in the album inner sleeve not seen in years. Perhaps people needed help pronouncing Lynyrd Skynyrd's name when the Florida band's debut album came out in 1973, but soon no one would need help recognizing - or requesting - the album's classic rock anthem Free Bird. With the exception of this nine-minute epic, Pronounced is actually quite lean and mean. Full of instantly recognizable Skynyrd standards like I Ain't the One, Gimme Three Steps, Poison Whiskey, Simple Man, and the ultimate rock ballad Tuesday's Gone, there isn't a single weak spot on it. By blending hard rock, blues, country, and the heart of the South with the distinctly sentimental voice and intelligent lyrics of Ronnie Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't just create an anthem with this album, they defined a genre. They also won themselves an opening slot on the Who's US Quadrophenia tour. Tales From WyomingEvery now and then a band comes along and speaks to the hearts of kids everywhere, as the
true voice of their community. Teenage Bottlerocket is that band in the punk rock community
right now. The band's anthemic punk rock classics quickly catapulted them to the top of the
scene, and before long the bands who inspired them had become their peers. In an age when
overnight internet sensations are an everyday occurrence, it's hard to find a band that's grown
organically, the old fashioned way; by word of mouth and non-stop touring, while winning kids
over one show at a time. Since 2001, Teenage Bottlerocket have been busy touring the world
over with the likes of NOFX, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones,
as well as a stint on the Vans Warped Tour.
"Tales from Wyoming" is the band's 6th full-length album, and for this effort the band enlisted
Descendents drummer and punk rock legend, Bill Stevenson (Rise Against, NOFX, Black
Flag, Descendents) to produce. The result is easily the band's strongest material to date. "Tales
From Wyoming" is 14 fast, melodic, and catchy songs that will stay stuck in your head for
months to come.
To support the release, Teenage Bottlerocket will be on tour with Pennywise, and will continue
to tour relentlessly throughout the release. Teenage Bottlerocket has found a way to both

Foreigner (Awaiting Repress)Blockbuster 1977 Debut Packed With Anthemic Classic Rock Hits and Heroic Guitar Riffs
Feels Like the First Time: You've Never Heard Foreigner Sound So Immediate, Detailed, Warm, and Dynamic in Analog
System-Testing Sonics: Half-Speed Mastered from the Original Master Tapes
Blissful feelings arise at the mere mention of 70s arena rock. It gives listeners the permission to have fun, sing along to aircraft-hangar-size choruses, play air guitar solos, forget about any troubles, recall the experience of a first kiss, and quite simply, rock out. Few albums better instill these pleasures than Foreigners 1977 self-titled debut album, a five-times platinum blockbuster chock full of salacious riffs, soaring vocals, edgy beats, and lyrics that practically demand to be shouted. And while the record has always boasted clean, immediate production, never before has it exploded with the dynamic intensity and rich transparency now made possible on Mobile Fidelitys dynamic 180g LP. This is what rock n roll dreams are made of.
Spearheaded by guitar hero Mick Jones, fresh off success with Spooky Tooth, Foreigner rallied around a talented collective pulled from the U.S. and U.K. Joining up with former King Crimson instrumentalist Ian McDonald and drummer Dennis Elliott, as well as keyboardist Al Greenwood and bassist Ed Gagliardi, Jones completed the puzzle with the addition of extraordinary singer Lou Gramm, whose vocal timbre and limitless pipes remain one of the most instantly identifiable combinations in music. Before long, two eternal radio classicsFeels Like the First Time and Cold As Ice, composed on a miniature piano and inspired by Hollywood star Joan Crawfordwere in the bag. Eight more tunes, each as solid as those that came before, followed, and Foreigner quickly became an overnight rock sensation.
In contrast to much of the eras angrier fare and crudely produced music, Foreigner stood out by way of its clean, muscular, professional production. Still, Mobile Fidelity believed that underneath the surfaces, an even fresher, bigger-sounding record loomed. Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, MoFis 180g LP presents the sextets roof-raising anthems and scintillating blend of guitars, synths, and Gramms soulful vocals across a wider, deeper soundstage than ever before imagined. Instrumental separation, tonal balance, and imaging are absolutely superb. Better still, the songs come across with an assertive liveliness that adds to their enjoyment, structure, and melodic character. The accessory flutes, saxophones, and synthesizer solos have never sounded so enmeshed within the overall sonic fabric.

Handwritten (Awaiting Repress)
Blue Colored Vinyl
The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.
Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.
And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.
After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.
We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.
Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.
The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?
It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.
And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.1. 45

Since 2002, The Flatliners have been busy touring the world over with the likes of NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise and Hot Water Music, as well as multiple stints on the Vans Warped Tour. "Inviting Light" is the band's 5th full-length album and is easily the band's strongest material to date. "Inviting Light" includes 12 melodic, catchy songs that will stay stuck in your head for months to come. It's the band's most mature effort, as it leans more rock than punk, but it doesn't alienate the band's core audience. It showcases them at the top of their game, as true masters of their craft.1. Shed (Awaiting Repress)Originally formed in 2003 by guitarist/vocalist Jamie Rhoden and the twin brother duo of vocalist/bassist Ned Russin and drummer Ben Russin when the trio were barely teenagers, Title Fight started as a way for these young kids to explore their burgeoning love of hardcore. But after adding guitarist Shane Moran in 2005, something funny happened; their tireless practicing eventually transformed them into one of the most exciting hardcore acts in recent memory.
After releasing a handful of EPs and 7s as well as performing shows all over the world, Title Fight began attracting attention from fans and labels who were captivated by the way the band managed to put a modern spin on the melodic hardcore sound pioneered by acts like Gorilla Biscuits and Lifetime and in 2010 the members of Title Fight dropped out of college in order to tour full-time with acts such as New Found Glory, Four Year Strong and H20. It was also around this time that the band entered the studio with Gorilla Biscuits/Quicksand guitarist Walter Schreifels who agreed to produce the band and promptly drove down to Northeastern Pennsylvania to help them prepare to record their highly anticipated full-length debut Shed.
From there the band headed to Philadelphia to record Shed over a grueling two-week period at the legendary Studio 4. However all those long nights paid off as Shed sees the band implementing various subgenres that range from old-school hardcore to aggressive punk rock that make these twelve energetic anthems instant classics for a new generation of listeners searching for music that inspires them as much as Title Fight were inspired by their heroes.
Weve been a band for seven years and this is the first time weve had a recording thats longer than seven minutes long, says Ned Russin. The last year has been a crazy ride but the whole time weve always stayed true to the fact that were not trying to be anything were not, he summarizes. Were four friends that play in a band together and we would still be doing this whether we were playing to five people or five hundred of them.1. Coxton Yard

Somewhere On The Golden CoastThis LA bands 2nd album is a remarkable set of classic-sounding indie-rock with clear echoes of Pavement, the Hold Steady, the Replacements and early Built to Spill, but they find their own voice with detailed songs that split the difference between sardonic and heartfelt when describing the music scene, living in debt and working part-time, transforming everyday subject matter into raging, celebratory anthems for slacker rock n rollers and other folks just trying to make ends meet. - KEXP1.
