The Imaginary Symphony - Minkowski: Les Musiciens Des Louvre

Une symphonie imaginaire is Minkowskis own collection of 17 orchestral pieces from 11 of Rameaus operas, compiled into a dramatic cycle that represents both the world of French Baroque dance music and the origins of French symphonic music. What emerges is a programme that is as dramatic as it is delightful and easily accessible!

With this recording the musical universe of Rameau is captured in an entirely new programme concept by one of the most popular interpreters of French Baroque music. Marc Minkowski has collected about 20 orchestral pieces from 11 of Rameaus operas and has put them together into a dramatic cycle that represents both the world of French Baroque dance music and the origins of French symphonic music.

    Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 8 & 3

Carlos Kleiber conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as they play Franz Schubert's 3rd and 8th Symphonies.

The year 1815 saw a veritable flood of music pour from the pen of the eighteen-year-old Franz Schubert: during that single year he produced no fewer than four operas and operettas, two symphonies, two masses, many sacred and secular choral pieces, sonatas and other works for piano, as well as some 145 lieder, among them the Erlkonig. Schubert wrote all this vast amount of music, which seemed to flow from him effortlessly, in his little room during the evenings. The position of assistant teacher exempted him from military service, and his daily nine hours of school duties did not stem his immense creative urge.

On the 24th of May, Schubert began the composition of his Third Symphony in D Major, which he finished on the 19th of July. This work, written with undisturbed facility directly in full score, is unproblematic. At that time, Schubert was untroubled by doubts concerning formal construction, or by a sense of the need to solve problems by exploring unknown territory. The last movement in particular, a Presto vivace in which the instruments toss the spritely theme about between them, also bears witness to the growing individuality of its composer, who was rapidly becoming a mature master of his art.

The secret of the Unfinished symphony has never been completely solved. Schubert wrote the two complete movements in 1822 and began a third movement, but for unknown reasons did not finish it. He evidently considered the two movements a work in their own right, to judge from his dedication of the score to the Steiermarkischer Musikverein. The artistic director of that association kept the score to himself, and it was not untnil 1865 that this symphony received its first performance. The occasion was a triumph, and it became a posthumous act of homage to the composer who had died so young.

Eduard Hanslick praised this symphony enthusiastically, declaring that it belonged among Schubert's most beautiful instrumental works. The Unfinished is more than that - its place is among the supreme achievements in the world of music.

Part maverick, part genius, total virtuoso, David Garrett, 25, has been surprising people since before he was four years old. It was then that his father gave him a violin (he was having a tantrum because his older brother had a violin teacher) and, without any lessons, the toddler picked it up and began playing. Fast forward just four years and David was already one of the foremost violinists in the world working with the most celebrated teachers and performing solos with legendary orchestras and conductors. With his natural talent, the input of the finest music teachers in the world and a spirit unusual in the sometimes fusty world of classical music, David has emerged as fully-formed, fully-rounded - not to mention highly attractive - artist. He has already played for Popes and princes and presidents (the German President saw David when he was just 11 and was so impressed he actually set about securing him a priceless 1718 Stradivarius: I used to leave violins on buses and in hotel rooms when I was younger, but not this one) but a whole new audience awaits.

Prokofiev & Ravel Piano Concertos (Awaiting Repress)

Prokofiev's great Third Piano Concerto has been Martha Argerich's signature piece since she won competitions with it at the age of 16 in 1957. If you're used to Bryon Janis' reading on Mercury or have never heard Argerich play Prokofieff, you're in for a shock. The only other artist I can think of who played the Third with this kind of energy at this breakneck tempo was Prokofiev himself, and Prokofiev's performance is all speed and slop. Despite its power and pace, Argerich's is far more agile, deeply thought out, and various - built upon the precise articulation of rhythmic and dynamic contrasts. Be they fortissississimo or pianissississimo, presto or adagio, every note, every chord, every bravura run and leaping flourish is sounded with passion and precision. It's as if Argerich is uttering one long, complex, fully articulate sentence in one long thrilling breath. Abbado and the Berlin Phil keep up with her, though it often seems (as it often does with distinctive pianists in distinctive performances) as if Argerich is conducting as well as soloing. Full credit goes to DG's engineers, whose close miking of the piano perfectly serves the clarity of line and muscular poetry of Argerich's sensational reading. A must-own disc. - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound, October 2011, Issue 216

    Cello Concertos

The greatest cellist of modern time -- well, who could argue with a statement like that? After all, Mstislav Rostropovich is a supreme virtuoso, a charismatic performer, and a sublime interpreter and virtually every one of his recordings is as good as it gets for the repertoire. The key word, of course, is virtually: while Rostropovich's Dvorák concerto with Karajan, his Beethoven sonatas with Richter, his Brahms sonatas with Serkin, and above all his Shostakovich sonata with Shostakovich are definitive, can one say the same of his Boccherini, Vivaldi, and Tartini concertos with Paul Sacher? Or could one say that Rostropovich does not so much play the music of the great Italian Baroque composers as overwhelm it, that his virtuosity, his charisma, and his interpretations are more than the music can bear and that the listener is left not with fond memories of the music but instead with the overpowering impression of an unstoppable musical personality having his way with the music. The results are initially awe-inspiring but may ultimately prove to some to be empty. Accompanied -- the more appropriate word might be enabled -- by Sacher and the Collegium Musicum ZÜrich, the greatest cellist of modern times came, saw, and conquered the finest cello concertos of Baroque times. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to the listener.

Salvatore Accardo is an outstanding Italian violin virtuoso, best known as a master of the works of Niccolo Paganini, but equally accomplished across a wide variety of repertory for the instrument. His playing is characterized by a taut, visceral tone and a disciplined musical approach that avoids self-indulgence. Having also established himself as a successful conductor, chamber musician and teacher, Accardo may be considered one of the most accomplished and influential musicians of his generation.

    Concert For Violin & Orchestra

Johanna Martzy has hitherto only been heard on records here in the Brahms Concerto and that performance established her at once as a great player. This record entirely confirms the verdict. She has an unerring sense of tempo - how exactly right is her speed for the slow movement: and her freshness and rhythm in the finale are a delight. This is just the sort of performance this concerto needs and it is one that will commend the music to anyone who has so far not been particularly captivated by the work. ... The orchestral accompaniment is extremely well done. - Gramophone

    Songs From The Labyrinth

On Songs From The Labyrinth, Sting discovers the music of 17th century songwriter John Dowland: beautiful melodies, fantastic lyrics, great accompaniments. In close collaboration with lutenist Edin Karamazov, he weaves songs with instrumental solos and evocative readings from a Dowland letter. Together, they create what Sting calls, A musical soundtrack to composer Dowland's life.

Though his recordings are relatively few (especially for a major label artist), Mischa Maisky is recognized as one of the most distinguished and celebrated cellists of our time. This recital of arrangements of familiar as well as undeservedly unfamiliar classical tunes amply demonstrates why. His tone is impeccable, technique flawless, and most important he leaves the listener feeling as if they're hearing the piece in a wholly fresh new way. Joined by his long time accompanist Pavel Gililov, this is a recording all cello enthusiasts are sure to enjoy.

    Cartridge Break-In Test Record

Multiple endless grooves of pink noise for cartridge break-in and other tracks for cartridge set-up

Phono cartridges usually need a running-in period to reach their full potential. This can take anything from 40 to 100 hours, depending upon the manufacturer, design and construction of the phono cartridge.

This Clearaudio Cartridge Break-In Record is a unique too. Playing an endless groove cut with pink noise significantly reduces the length of the break-in period.

Six continuous pink noise tracks are provided at various positions on the record (track numbers are 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11).

To enable frequency response measurement of the phono cartridge, track 3 comprises a sine-wave frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

There are two separate 240-second tracks containing a pink noise signal for measuring and testing the set-up of the whole system.

Tracks 4 and 13 are recorded with no signal to test the noise floor of the entire hi-fi system.

Finally, tracks 8 and 12 contain a special signal to optimise and adjust the anti-skating force. Both channels are recorded with a 316 Hz sine-wave with continually changing phase difference from 0 to 360 deg, so that the stylus movement repeatedly changes from lateral to vertical and back again. The signal level changes accordingly from -22 dB to +8 dB, corresponding to a maximum velocity of 9.81 cm/s or a maximum displacement of 50 lm, horizontally or vertically.

    1. No Signal - Concentric groove for eccentricity check
    2. 1 kHz - starting signal
    3. Sweep - frequency response check: 20 Hz to 20 kHz
    4. No Signal - total system noise check
    5. Pink noise - Cartridge break in
