    - Michael Fremer, Stereophile, June 2011

Clearaudio's vision for the concept: design an elegantly styled turntable package featuring a level of groundbreaking technology usually only found in high-end turntables, combining plug-and-play simplicity with outstanding sound quality and affordability.

Beneath the refined, contemporary exterior lies a level of technical sophistication unique to Clearaudio. The concept tonearm features a magnetic bearing that is friction-free for extremely low distortion and superb performance. The package is completed with the high-quality Clearaudio CONCEPT MC CARTRIDGE. With the concept turntable package, Clearaudio offers you an extremely innovative design that is very affordable.

The revolutionary concept combines the highest quality of music playback with a design that has won several awards worldwide - including the German Design Award and 'Best Turntable' award from 'What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision' magazine. With the concept, to find an affordable entry point to the high-end world is a breeze. It reveals the magic of optimum sound reproduction even for those music lovers who could not previously afford this experience. You can buy the concept in a package with specially developed MOVING MAGNET (MM) or MOVING COIL (MC) cartridges. A frictionless magnetic bearing tonearm is responsible for the optimal performance of the cartridges. All critical parameters from cartridge tracking weight to anti-skating are preadjusted in our factory. The concept represents the ideal of stress-free 'plug and play': unpack, connect, put the record on the platter - and just enjoy music. Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 8 & 3

Carlos Kleiber conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as they play Franz Schubert's 3rd and 8th Symphonies.

The year 1815 saw a veritable flood of music pour from the pen of the eighteen-year-old Franz Schubert: during that single year he produced no fewer than four operas and operettas, two symphonies, two masses, many sacred and secular choral pieces, sonatas and other works for piano, as well as some 145 lieder, among them the Erlkonig. Schubert wrote all this vast amount of music, which seemed to flow from him effortlessly, in his little room during the evenings. The position of assistant teacher exempted him from military service, and his daily nine hours of school duties did not stem his immense creative urge.

On the 24th of May, Schubert began the composition of his Third Symphony in D Major, which he finished on the 19th of July. This work, written with undisturbed facility directly in full score, is unproblematic. At that time, Schubert was untroubled by doubts concerning formal construction, or by a sense of the need to solve problems by exploring unknown territory. The last movement in particular, a Presto vivace in which the instruments toss the spritely theme about between them, also bears witness to the growing individuality of its composer, who was rapidly becoming a mature master of his art.

The secret of the Unfinished symphony has never been completely solved. Schubert wrote the two complete movements in 1822 and began a third movement, but for unknown reasons did not finish it. He evidently considered the two movements a work in their own right, to judge from his dedication of the score to the Steiermarkischer Musikverein. The artistic director of that association kept the score to himself, and it was not untnil 1865 that this symphony received its first performance. The occasion was a triumph, and it became a posthumous act of homage to the composer who had died so young.

Eduard Hanslick praised this symphony enthusiastically, declaring that it belonged among Schubert's most beautiful instrumental works. The Unfinished is more than that - its place is among the supreme achievements in the world of music.

For the past 15 years, Michael Yee's Phonomena phono stage designs have defined Q.P.R., or Quality/Price Ratio, for phono stages, and the Nova II is no exception.

Built in California, the new Nova II is a battery-powered phono stage with incredible flexibility and performance. The Nova II replaces the popular Nova Phonomena. Our Nova II battery-powered phono preamplifier, sharing improved chassis design of our MYDAC II, features dual-mono, discrete circuitry with extensive gain and loading flexibility, delivering the best sound in its price range. Like the Phonomena II and SuperNova II, the Nova II has rear panel accessible switches for easily accessible and highly flexible gain and loading adjustment. It features 2 rechargeable internal NiMH dual-mono battery packs with Smart Sensing auto recharge feature. All AC and charging circuits automatically disconnect when listening in battery mode. The Nova II features enhanced casework design and upgraded internal components.

The Musical Surroundings Nova II is a complete phonograph preamplifier with RIAA equalization that amplifies the output signal of a phono cartridge, either moving coil or moving magnet, up to a nominal "line level". The Nova II may be used with a receiver or an integrated amplifier. If you use separate components, a line level control unit (preamp) is required before the power amp, since there is no independent volume control for the Nova II. The Nova II's power supply is internal and connnects to the wall with the supplied wall mount transformer.

    Virtuoso

Part maverick, part genius, total virtuoso, David Garrett, 25, has been surprising people since before he was four years old. It was then that his father gave him a violin (he was having a tantrum because his older brother had a violin teacher) and, without any lessons, the toddler picked it up and began playing. Fast forward just four years and David was already one of the foremost violinists in the world working with the most celebrated teachers and performing solos with legendary orchestras and conductors. With his natural talent, the input of the finest music teachers in the world and a spirit unusual in the sometimes fusty world of classical music, David has emerged as fully-formed, fully-rounded - not to mention highly attractive - artist. He has already played for Popes and princes and presidents (the German President saw David when he was just 11 and was so impressed he actually set about securing him a priceless 1718 Stradivarius: I used to leave violins on buses and in hotel rooms when I was younger, but not this one) but a whole new audience awaits.

    Beethoven: Triple Concerto in C

Ferenc Fricsay conducts the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and pianist Geza Anda, violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan and cellist Pierre Fournier on a performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto in C major, Op 56. 180g vinyl pressing from Clearaudio.

The widespread interest both in the technical capabilities of solo instruments and in the symphony, whose formal outlines became established toward the end of the 18th century, accounts for the popularity at that time of "concertante symphonies" in which several solo instruments (strings, wind) combined to oppose the orchestra. Despite the popularity, Beethoven was correct when he wrote about his Triple Concerto "that a concertante with these three solo parts is something new."

The novelty lay in the usage of this connection with the piano. The difference between the piano's method of tone production and that of the other instruments alongside the piano's "mechanics" resulted in tonal problems. These problems arose both within the solo trio and in its relationship to the orchestra. Beethoven, who was interested throughout his whole career in experiments to extend the scope of instrumental music, here combined the styles of chamber music and of concertante symphonic writing to great effect.

Russian Orchestal Music - Barenboim - Chicago Symphony Orchestra on 180g Import LP

"There is no one quite like Daniel Barenboim today in the music world. General music director of the Berlin State Opera and its orchestra, the Berlin Staatskapelle; principal guest conductor at the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan; formerly music director of the Chicago Symphony and the Orchestre de Paris; for years a conductor at the Bayreuth and Salzburg festivals; a champion of new music since the 1950s; a chamber musician who has performed with every great singer and instrumentalist in half a century, from Gregor Piatigorsky and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to his late wife, the cellist Jacqueline du PrÉ, and the bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, Mr. Barenboim was a child prodigy who remains, despite a full-time conducting career, a towering figure at the keyboard." - Michael Kimmelman, New York Times

Here, the 2003 Grammy-winner conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in performances of Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, Mussorgsky's Night On The Bald Mountain, and Rimsky-Korssakoff's Russian Easter Overture and Capriccio Espagnol. 180g vinyl pressing from Clearaudio.

"Beautiful though their melodies remain, the "Polovtsian Dances" mean less when, as here, deprived of voices. This is a very animated performance, however, with fine playing by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and first-class recording, everything being absolutely distinct in well-proportioned stereo, and with virtually no tape hiss. Stich points have even more importance than usual in items like those by Rimsky-Korsakov, which are mainly studies in orchestral colour." - Gramophone/1977

He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Jim has recorded television specials with the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Bobby Floyd Trio and live albums with the Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Orchestras.

Jerry Tachoir is acclaimed by critics for his talent, versatality, and his studious grasp of the jazz idiom and brings an exciting and engaging dimension to his performances. He has been an active member of the Ludwig/Musser clinic staff since 1972. His most requested clinic features include improvisational techniques, harmonic awareness, and vibe technique.

The connection of the percussion ensemble with jazz/rock/popular music seems a logical one given the inclusion of various percussion instruments as integral parts of this music. The drumset, of course, was present from the beginning of jazz and rock. The vibraphon has long been a favorite jazz instrument and the xylophone was a favorite ragtime solo instrument in the early part of the 20th century. Ethnic percussion instruments from Latin America, Africa and other cultures have long been used in the jazz/rock/pop Idiom.
