Close To The Edge'
Drama1980 was an interesting year for the legendary prog-rockers Yes. While the Close To The Edge line-up was taking a break for a few years, founding member Chris Squire maintained the legendary status of the band along with long-time band mates Steve Howe and Alan White, with new members Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (both from The Buggles), and created the hard rocking masterpiece Drama.
A bit of a departure from the more classically oriented feel of previous efforts, this album slammed all the way to the top of the rock charts! From the kick off track Machine Messiah, Yes was a new entity with a lot of guts, flair for delivering a hit album, and a darling of the new video medium thanks to the support of outlets like MTV.
New Yes vocalist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes were nothing but first class musicians from the word go, and the writing of the band in total truly generated some of the more enduring tunes in their four decade long catalog. For instance, the entire side two of this album was usually played in its entirety at radio due to the power of each song. With stand outs like Into The Lens with its I Am A Camera refrain, it was easy to hear why this new edgy Yes sound truly resonated in the early '80s. If you need more proof, how about the incredible musicianship on Run Through The Light, and of course the super hit Tempus Fugit, both of which made this album the classic that it is to this day. Steve Howes guitar work was second to none, along with some very heavy bass and drum work throughout from Chris Squire and Alan White, Drama was truly a remarkable team effort for Yes.
Friday Music is once again the proud home of yet another classic Yes masterpiece, with their masterwork Drama. Issued here for the first time in the 180g audiophile vinyl format, the fans have been requesting this and of course, we heard you loud and clear. This limited edition album is mastered from the original Atlantic tapes by Joe Reagoso (Close To The Edge/90120/Relayer) and also includes the limited edition gatefold cover, as you remember it.1. The Who: The Studio Albums (Box Set)A Quick One Ranked 383/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. The most explosive live act ever to appear on stage, The Who stands alone in rock music. Propelled by the most staggeringly brilliant rhythm section in all popular music, layered with deafening power chords and thunderous vocal fury, The Who transcended its original billing as "Maximum R&B" to become the most musically inventive and structurally innovative band of all time.Together, the four divergent personalities of The Who produced a hurricane. Each member of the group was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. Never before or since has spiritual and intellectual brilliance sounded so gloriously furious!Alone among the great bands, The Who has found itself at the center of every major rock event from Monterey, Woodstock, and the Isle of Wight to the Concert for Kampuchea, Live Aid, and the Concert for NYC. In any era, The Who is a true touchstone for rock and roll greatness. They have sold over 100 million albums and won every award including Grammys, Brit Awards and Lifetime Achievement and have been inducted into both the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame!Features:• Limited Edition Box Set• 11 studio albums (14 LPs in all), spanning from 1965 through 2006• Mastered by Jon Astley and Miles Showell at Close to the Edge and Metropolis Studios• All Original LP Artwork with Posters, Inserts & More! This title is not eligible for discount. My Generation (1965)1. Close to the GlassThe Notwist's Close to the Glass, their eighth album, is a catchy and
unpredictable marriage of playing your heart out on an instrument and
the magnetic pulse of precise programming. We now find The Notwist
defining their edges with no shortage of bravery or beat. As romantic as
it is robotic, Close to the Glass is a bottomless collage: part pop song,
part science, part band, part storytelling and all Notwist. Brothers Markus
and Micha Archer, alongside Martin Gretchmann, Max Punktezahl and
Andi Haberl, have finally found their human form and, at last, 'become'
The Notwist began as a metallic hardcore band in 1989. Markus and
Micha have always been at the core of the band; Gretchman joined in
1997, and the band has been through countless collaborations and side
projects (Lali Puna, Console, Ms. John Soda, to name a few), constantly
pushing themselves both in those projects and as The Notwist. Their
sound has transformed hugely over the years, becoming progressively
catchier and incorporating the members' love of folk, classical, rap, rock
and electronic music.
Now, in 2014, we find The Notwist following up 2007's The Devil,
You + Me with their most adventurous record yet. The strong connection
and trust between band members allowed them to blur the lines between
their roles more than ever. With everyone playing anything, the band
could take their music anywhere, from sheer noise to kraut-rock beat
pocket to arena rock ride out. Close to the Glass is also full of vocal leaps
for Markus Acher, experimenting not only with effects but also with his
range, leaving the comforts of his signature style to take the music
somewhere new. Close to the Glass reflects and reveals the truth about
The Notwist more than ever, in its collage nature, pop-music moments
and unpredictable structures. It feels as good in expensive headphones
as it does in the trunk, a seamless soundtrack for that movie always
going on inside you.1. Signals

Topographic Drama - Live Across AmericaIn the Summer of 2016, YES embarked upon an ambitious tour. At each show, the band performed its 1980 album 'Drama' in its entirety - for the first time ever - plus sides one and four from YES' 1973 double-album 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' (their first number one album), together with fan favourites like 'Roundabout' and 'Starship Trooper'.
Rhino salutes the influential progressive rockers - who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year - with the new live album, TOPOGRAPHIC DRAMA - LIVE ACROSS AMERICA. The music will be available as a Triple-LP. The release features detailed cover art designed by the band's longtime collaborator Roger Dean.
The new collection features live performances from 12 dates recorded on the tour in February 2017, by the current Yes line-up: Steve Howe (guitars), Alan White (drums), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Billy Sherwood (bass), Jon Davison (vocals), and additional drummer for this tour Jay Schellen.
TOPOGRAPHIC DRAMA - LIVE ACROSS AMERICA highlights the best performances from the 2017 leg of the 12-show tour and mirrors the set list from those concerts. Each night, Yes opened with all six songs from Drama (1980), the band's tenth studio album, which peaked at No.2 on the U.K. Album Chart. Standouts include 'Machine Messiah', 'Tempus Fugit' and the album's only single 'Into The Lens'.
After 'Drama', the band shifted gears for songs from two of its best-selling albums: 'And You And I' from 1972's 'Close To The Edge' (UK Platinum) and 'Heart Of The Sunrise' from 1971's 'Fragile' (UK Platinum).
Next, the group played the opening and closing tracks of its concept album, 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' (1973). Howe's exceptional guitar work on 'The Revealing Science Of God' and White's propulsive drumming on 'Ritual' have always been regarded as ground-breaking. The album concludes with two live staples: 'Roundabout' from 'Fragile' (1971) and 'Starship Trooper' from 'The Yes Album' (1971).
Among the world's most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, YES was founded in 1968. The Grammy-Award® winning recording artists have sold more than 50 million records in a career that has so far spanned six decades.LP 1

SketchesClassically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). Advocated by giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned with a mini-album to be released on Bjork's label One Little Indian Records.
The songs serve to reintroduce listeners to Ackroyd's most stunning pieces from her previous albums, all of which have been reworked into 'acoustic' solo piano arrangements alongside four brand new unheard pieces, which offer a taste of a new forthcoming record.
The record, aptly named Sketches, due to its stripped down nature, is bejeweled by thematic undercurrents - birds are the inspiration for three of the tracks, which are to be released together as the lead singles from the album.
'Birdwoman' and 'Glass Sea' feature field recordings of birds and the ocean, recorded on Brighton Beach and North Rona respectively. 'Feathers' is the title track of my second album Feathers says Ackroyd, discussing the theme of birds.
'Feathers' is a piece about hope - 'Hope is the thing with Feathers' (Emily Dickinson), 'Birdwoman' is a reworking of a piece I originally wrote as a soundtrack to a silent film based on a Siberian folk tale, and 'Glass Sea' attempts to capture the feel of a boat trip I took to the remote islands of North Rona and Sula Sgeir, North of the Outer Hebrides. The ocean was unusually still, reflecting the sky like a sheet of glass, but the sky became busy with birds as we approached the islands.
Ackroyd is a keen collaborator, having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theater and radio. The artist won a BAFTA for an animation soundtrack that she wrote and performed in 2015. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Ackroyd developed a unique compositional style, using contemporary pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well.
Talking about the recording of Sketches, Ackroyd said: The songs were recorded just outside of Brighton at Retreat Studios, close to the sea on the edge of the village, surrounded by hills, fields, and wildlife. As if by magic, it began to rain just before I began to record the track 'Rain', and ended shortly after I finished. You can hear the rain build and then die away with the music on the finished piece.
I have loved creating this solo piano album. There are normally all these layers that I use to create a world of sound, that I love to build and sculpt, but there is something really special about communicating simply through the instrument alone. With other layers there is always something to hide behind, with only the piano you can just focus on your technique and expression, everything feels very audible and exposed and that is very exciting, especially in a live context.1. Such memorable hits as "Words," "Destination Unknown," and "Walking In L.A." made Missing Persons a household name in the '80s and a staple of early MTV thanks in part to the cutting edge fashion statements of Bozzio, which inspired the likes of Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Lady GaGa, and others.

Twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man - Philippe Petit (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), and aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, Petit and his gang overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future, Polar Express), the film boasts cutting edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. The Walk is true big-screen cinema, a chance for moviegoers to viscerally experience the feeling of reaching the clouds. The film is also a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the Towers of the World Trade Center.
Alan Silvestri has scored some of the most iconically revered films in Hollywood history, amassing over a hundred credits to the tune of two Oscar and Golden Globe nominations (a.o. for the Forrest Gump soundtrack), as well as three Grammy awards. While stylistically diverse, the unifying voice of Alan's work is an unmistakable rhythmic melody whose themes continue to embody movie excitement and drama for generations of moviegoers.1. Pourquoi?

Turn On The Bright LightsInterpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.
Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.1. People Are People appears here, but finds itself outclassed by some of Depeche Mode's undisputed classics, most especially the moody, beautiful Somebody, a Gore-sung piano ballad that mixes its wit and emotion skillfully; Master and Servant, an amped-up, slamming dance track that conflates sexual and economic politics to sharp effect; and the closing Blasphemous Rumors, a slow-building anthemic number supporting one of Gore's most cynical lyrics, addressing a suicidal teen who finds God only to die soon afterward. Even lesser-known tracks like the low-key pulse of Lie to Me and the weirdly dreamy It Doesn't Matter showcase an increasingly confident band. Alan Wilder's arrangements veer from the big to the stripped down, but always with just the right touch, such as the crowd samples bubbling beneath Somebody or the call/response a cappella start to Master and Servant. With Reward, David Gahan's singing style found the mÉtier it was going to stick with for the next ten years, and while it's never gone down well with some ears, it still has a compelling edge to it that suits the material well.

The Good EarthAnother piece of topical hard rock from Manfred Mann's Earth Band and, as before, listenable even to those without a serious bone in their bodies, by virtue of the playing. Moving between hard rock and British blues influences (with a special debt to Cream on the opening cut, Give Me the Good Earth) and progressive rock, the quartet cuts a mean swathe across the sonic landscape, between Mick Rogers' soaring guitar solos and Manfred Mann's inimitable synthesizer work. When these guys start reaching, as on Earth Hymn, that's when their best musical instincts take hold, and the results are always worth hearing. There's stuff here that King Crimson or Be Bop Deluxe wouldn't have been ashamed to have had on any of their albums; indeed, the instrumental Sky High is worth the price of admission by itself as a showcase for the talents of all four players as both hard rock musicians and an art rock ensemble. They even manage to work in elements of folk-rock, and its attendant lyricism, on the album, by way of the Christopher Logue-based Be Not Too Hard (which was also recorded, in a different adaptation, by Joan Baez about seven years earlier). And Earth Hymn, Pt. 2 closes out the album in grand style, once again pushing the band to the edge of their unique brand of progressive/hard rock.1. Give Me the Good Earth

IncunabulaIncunabula, the debut full-length offering from Autechre finally made available again on vinyl, having been out of print on vinyl since 2001. Having first emerged onto a post-acid house 1993, Incunabula was released as part 7 of the now legendary Artificial Intelligence series of albums and compilations from Warp. A series that gave us early records from artists who went on to sculpt the electronic landscape both in and out of the club. Being lined up against such contemporaries as Black Dog Productions (Balil and Plaid) Aphex under his Polygon Window guise, Richie Hawtin's FUSE project, Speedy J, B12 & on the series' closing compilation, artists as diverse as Seefeel, Richard H Kirk & The Higher Intelligence Agency. Incunabula set the tone for the following landmark albums from Ae, huge caustic dissections of sound that almost resemble vast mathematical equations more than they do club fodder (though tracks like the breakbeat whip crack of Doctrine and the acidic euphoria of Maetl, which when deployed by the right DJ will go off). For those just arriving at the edge of Ae's world and are looking for an entry point into the sprawling discography of the group, or those of you looking to delve into the pre-MaxMSP archives, this is the record for you. There is not much we can say that has not been said before, but this truly is a landmark album of UK electronica, a legendary recording that still even after twenty-six years still sounds like a future we are yet to arrive at.1. Memories Are NowJesca Hoop's new album Memories Are Now on Sub Pop Records wastes no time in making clear its confidence, confrontation, and craftsmanship. The stark and reverberant title track opens the album with "a fighting spirit," says Hoop, serving as an anthem to push through any obstacle and put forth your very best work. And she has unequivocally done that here, with an album of stunningly original songs--minimalist yet brimming with energy, emerging from a wealth of life experience, great emotional depth, and years of honing the craft of singing.
As riveting as it is reflective, the album, produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes), is a fresh debut of sorts for Hoop, as the first of her solo records made outside of Tony Berg's Zeitgeist Studios where she and Mills were mentored. Says Hoop, "Blake is so utterly musical and emotionally intelligent in his expression. I wanted to see what we could do, just he and I out from under Tony's wing." Mills pushed her to strip away layers, keeping it as close to the live experience as possible, using whole live takes and working very quickly. "It's still covered in embryonic fluid, for lack of a better way to put it," says Hoop.
However fast the work, Memories Are Now covers a great deal of ground, showcasing every edge and curve of Hoop's captivating voice, with sounds and themes ranging from the mythic to the deeply intimate. She sings of the religion that weighs heavily on her past and the world, of the imagination of myth, of the cruel nature of life and love.
The defiance that permeates Memories Are Now is both a product and necessity of a career that has been independently driven and self-funded from the beginning. "All of my successes have been won on the grassroots level, with handshakes and hugs from great people who believe in me," says Hoop, more than a decade into her career and with new paths to forge. As she sings in the title track, "I've lived enough life, I've earned my stripes. That's my knife in the ground, this is mine." -Evie Nagy1. Memories Are Now

While You Were SleepingJosÉ James has announced a his new album, While You Were Sleeping, his fifth studio album and his second album for Blue Note Records. While You Were Sleeping is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed R&B and jazz steeped No Beginning No End, and signals a new creative direction for the versatile singer-songwriter. The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, and was produced by JosÉ and Brian Bender.
That creative shift is heard in the rock edge of tracks like "EveryLittleThing" and "Anywhere U Go" and is evidenced in a change in JosÉ's band which adds guitarist Brad Allen Williams to the stellar line-up of keyboardist Kris Bowers, bassist Solomon Dorsey and drummer Richard Spaven. The influence of Jimi Hendrix can be heard throughout the album as much as R&B forefathers like Al Green. Special guests on While You Were Sleeping include vocalist Becca Stevens who duets with James on her song "Dragon," as well as trumpeter Takuya Kuroda who is featured on the cover of Green's classic "Simply Beautiful" that closes the album.
This album is a synthesis of everything I love about music," says JosÉ, "from contemporary artists like Frank Ocean, James Blake, and Junip to groundbreaking artists I grew up with like Nirvana, Radiohead, and Madlib. It's also a love letter to many late nights spent in East London clubs like Plastic People and Cargo, watching new movements unfold in electronic music. I want people to feel the joy of discovery that I experience night after night onstage, reaching for something new.
NPR Music raved about No Beginning No End, proclaiming "James makes utterly contemporary music," adding that he "skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strong awareness of a lineage that stretches from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls to Maxwell."
Pitchfork noted that "While he's always been one to try stuff out - he successfully collaborated with Flying Lotus on Blackmagic - on No Beginning No End he finds a way to make an eclectic approach feel unified and whole. With previous releases, he's earned his heroic acclaim in the tough, tried-and-trusted lanes of contemporary jazz. With No Beginning No End, he's built his own road out."1. Angel

Smash (Awaiting Repress)Pianist's First New Studio Album in More Than Four Years Masterfully Unites Harmony and Melody Via Uncommon Delicacy, Tonal Intimacy
Barber Defies Expectations, Channels Melancholic Experiences Into Expressionistic Poetry and Attractive Arrangements
Instant Audiophile Classic: Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP Set Renders Atmospherics, Whisper-Soft Transients, Acoustic Dimensions, and Images With Utmost Detail and Precision
"No One Else Writes or Sounds Like This"-Chicago Tribune
Accessible and complicated, alluring and challenging, sensuous and liberating, Patricia Barber's Smash once and for all confirms the pianist/singer exists in an elevated artistic plane reached by none of her generational peers. Four years in the making, and the beloved musician's first studio record since 2008, her Concord Records debut defies expectations and crystallizes her status as a preeminent songwriter. Informed by personal episodes of significant loss and yearning, the album masterfully unites harmony and melody via uncommon delicacy, tonal intimacy, and ethereal surrealism. It will likely stand as 2013's finest jazz effort, an instant classic.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP possesses audiophile-quality fidelity and dynamic transparency unmatched by the commercially released CD. Akin to the reissue label's previous Barber releases, many of which are long out-of-print and command huge sums on the collector's market, Smash brings the singer and her band into your listening room, converting it into a recreation of the stage at Chicago's Green Mill, Barber's home base. Sonic characteristics crucial to Barber's sophisticated compositions-atmospherics, decay, whisper-soft transients, mood, acoustic dimensions, precise imaging-are rendered with utmost detail, balance, and accuracy. All else that's required for your trip to the Green Mill is a stereo and glass of chardonnay.
Punctuated by deft instrumental passages and mysterious verses, Smash marks a triumphant return for Barber after she endured a series of melancholic episodes, including the death of her mother and four other people close to her. In addition, a disagreement with business associate cost her untold amount of money. She also broke away from Blue Note after its president stepped down from his position. Barber channels these painful, often-angry experiences and transitional periods into expressionistic poetry on Smash, transferring her emotions to arrangements that mirror the deep, meaningful cycle of human life and death.
Backed by a brilliant trio, Barber opts for her now-signature subdued methods, allowing each syllable to linger, every note to hover before fading, each rhythmic line to develop unique relationships with the groove. Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich wrote in his rave review of Smash: "No one else writes or sounds like this, in other words, because no one else approaches the art of singing, songwriting, and piano playing with Barber's particular interests. The liquidity of her vocals, the sharp edge of her jazz pianism, and the quirkiness of her original songs cannot be imitated and remain a work in progress."
These aspects, and more, are immediately apparent on Smash, arguably the boldest and most satisfying set of the reclusive talent's career. Her famously seductive and breathy vocals, supple right-hand runs, and nuanced harmonics simultaneously engage, hypnotize, and tempt. Her mates follow suit with aptly sculpted bass lines, taut percussion, and suggestive guitar fills. A model of economical succinctness, Smash takes risks, harbors intensity, and utilizes silences to communicate. It represents a new level for 21st century jazz, and there's no way to better way to experience it and immerse yourself in its powers than via Mobile Fidelity's superb edition.

All Harm Ends HereThe Early Day Miners Good Time Band is back with another platter of Midwest post-goth. Having already introduced their new rhythm section (Matt Griffin on drums and Jonathan Richardson on bass) to the world over the course of their last two tours, with All Harm Ends Here Early Day Miners have combined the lushness of their second album Let Us Garlands Bring with the conciseness of their last full-length Jefferson At Rest. Moreso than on any of their previous efforts, EDM take both musical and tonal cues from the principal architects of the 80's sad-as-hell dark underground - Echo & the Bunnymen, the Church, early-the Cure, and most notably the Bauhaus/Tones On Tail/Love And Rockets axis. While contemporaries like Bedhead and Interpol have mined primarily the darkest aspects of these long shadows, there lies in Early Day Miners' method an innate sense of hope that transcends even their darkest themes (decay, suicide, desertion). Perhaps this is most evident in the guitar interplay of long-time collaborators Dan Burton (Ativin) and Joseph Brumley. Arpeggios abound, the works of Roger McGuinn and The Edge come to mind in that there is a sense of hopefulness and sublimation which drives the songs to a better place. While the album is filled with death and ghosts of all sorts, its unifying theme is the individual's ability to escape the death and ghosts. Even the making of the album (which was done just outside of the band's hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, on the outskirts of Hoosier National Forest) was plagued by ghosts and phantoms. Recorded at the Old Mt. Gilead Church - recently revamped into a recording studio and still immediately surrounded on three sides by a dozen acres of 150-year old cemetery - principal tracking for All Harm Ends Here was halted for days at a time on multiple occasions when inexplicable flutter infected the reels of tape, almost requiring EDM to relocate its principal tracking altogether. Mixing and overdubbing was done at Burton's own Grotto Home Studio in an effort to evade those ghosts in the machine which possessed Old Mt. Gilead. While the Early Day Miners don't make flashy music, their layered music rewards the repeat listener. If you listen closely enough, in fact, you can hear ghosts in the distance.Errance

SubordinationSince their first demo in 2013, the Austin expats in Institute have edged their raw
anarcho-punk blitz into something much more expansive and nuanced. 2014's
Salt EP marked the beginning of the band's working relationship with Sacred
Bones, and it explored longer, more experimental song forms. Catharsis, the
band's debut full-length, was another huge push forward, with a slightly cleaner
production and some krautrock influence creeping in around the edges. Subordination
sees them push themselves further out of genre, incorporating hard rock
and glam and writing some of the most diverse material of their career.
Subordination was written in the days leading up to Institute's first European
tour, where they then had a chance to sculpt the songs live before recording them
in summer of 2016. The songwriting and recording process sought to close the
gap between the band's records and shows, to make an album as representative of
their live set as possible. It was the most collaborative Institute writing session to
date, with all four band members contributing (gtr -Arak Avakian, drums - Barry
Elkanick, bass- Adam Cahoon & vox - Moses Brown). They worked again with
producer Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and fully captured the intensity that has
made them one of the best live punk bands touring today.
Frontman Moses Brown's lyrics remain deeply personal, but rather than diving
into introspection and plucking out intimate details about his life, he attempts to
dismantle systems of patriarchal thought and power. Brown investigates national
insecurities and American socialization failures through the lens of his personal
experiences in both public school and art schools.
The songs on Subordination address the lonely sham of playing by the rules, the
search for money and power, the annihilation of a true personality, and the standards
of normalcy that, from childhood, condition us to feel abject.1. Exhibitionism

American BandLP Includes Bonus 7-Inch Single
Drive-By Truckers have always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. Founded in 1996 by singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, the band have long held a progressive fire in their belly but with AMERICAN BAND, they have made the most explicitly political album in their extraordinary canon. A powerful and legitimately provocative work, hard edged and finely honed, the album is the sound of a truly American Band - a Southern American band - speaking on matters that matter. DBT made the choice to direct the Way We Live Now head on, employing realism rather than subtext or symbolism to purge its makers' own anger, discontent, and frustration with societal disintegration and the urban/rural divide that has partitioned the country for close to a half-century.
AMERICAN BAND's considerable force can in part be credited to the sheer musical strength of the current Drive-By Truckers line-up, with Hood and Cooley joined by bassist Matt Patton, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Jay Gonzalez, and drummer Brad Morgan - together, the longest-lasting iteration in the band's two-decade history. AMERICAN BAND follows ENGLISH OCEANS and 2015's IT'S GREAT TO BE ALIVE!, marking the first time DBT have made three consecutive LPs with the same hard-traveling crew.1. Ramon Casiano
