Round Midnight - The Minneapolis Broadcast 1975

STUNNING 180 GRAM VINYL RELEASE OF THIS TOM WAITS LIVE PERFORMANCE

    1000 ONLY LIMITED EDITION

In December, Tom entered the studios of KQRS Minneapolis for his first ever FM broadcast, floated across the airwaves by that very station and syndicated by many others nationwide.

Now considered the holy grail of Waits broadcasts amongst serious collectors of the great mans work, this performance featuring Tom Waits alone at his piano with just his magnificent voice as accompaniment, the way he should be heard, is nothing short of staggering.

This CD contains the full KQRS broadcast in perfect FM stereo quality, during which Tom performs a range of songs taken from his first three records Closing Time , The Heart Of Saturday Night and the aforementioned Nighthawks.

Bonus tracks include a further three exceptional TV broadcasts from the early to mid 1980s, and include Mr. Siegal performed on Don Lang s show in 1981, plus two 1986 Letterman broadcasts in support of his then brand new masterpiece Swordfishtrombones

    Closing Time

When unassuming young Orkney music-maker Erland Cooper picked up his guitar and travelled the length of the country to play a show in London's
Notting Hill, little did he know that a chance encounter with musical veteran Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good The Bad & The Queen, and Gorillaz)
would be the start of a unique songwriting friendship. Together they formed Erland & The Carnival and now, nearly a decade later, arrives Closing Time -
the band's third, most accomplished album yet.

Opening a new chapter, Closing Time is an understated, inward looking collection of songs that feature stunning string arrangements and Erland's
impassioned vocals at centre stage. But rather than the modern folk adaptations of traditional songs, children's poems, and ancient literature on the
band's earlier albums or the pair's recent conceptual folklore project The Magnetic North, this time the band tell tales of a more personal nature.
"Previously we didn't know what we wanted to say or how to say it and would use stories and direct references to help us get to a place we could feel
secure," admits Simon. Erland adds; "in making this record we discarded an album's worth of material that sounded like the first two albums. We wanted
to make something different - doing another Jackson C Frank cover wasn't an option."

Above all, Closing Time is the very first time the listener can truly hear the wholly collaborative process that is Erland & The Carnival. Lyrical and musical
duties have always been shared, yet here the combined creativity of the pair's working friendship is only solidified with Erland taking a more 'hands on'
approach to production. The string arrangements, brought about by the album's unashamed twisted and selfish love song 'Quiet Love', were scored by
Simon before being recorded by a quartet in his living room later that week.

Recorded in Damon Albarn's studio13 with previous Erland & The Carnival engineer Steve Sedgewick and mixed by London Grammar producer Tim Bran
with Paul Weller guesting on two tracks. Despite creating more than 40 songs in the process of writing the album ("Some of the song melodies and ideas
on this may have even been written when I was 21 to be honest. 'Hopeless' certainly was," admits Erland), it was a brilliantly spontaneous and productive
time taking just over 3 days to come to fruition. "We learnt to be incredibly disciplined" tells Simon. "It feels like pruning a tree - when you cut away the
needless and weaker branches, what you get is something much fresher and stronger coming through."

    Love Comes Close

Love Comes Close is the debut full-length from Philly/New York quartet Cold Cave. Matador is now reissuing the instantly sold-out self-released album from August of 2009. The warm, rich synth pop sounds are laced with equal measures of romance and nihilism and somewhere in these realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter. Singer/keyboardist/songwriter Wesley Eisold is joined by Caralee McElroy (ex-Xiu Xiu), Dominick Fernow (Prurient) and Sarah Lipstate (ex-Parts & Labor, Noveller). Eisold himself served time with hardcore punk legends American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost and Some Girls.

    Close To Home

Recorded in 1975 at his eastern Kentucky home, this is the last album Roscoe Holcomb released before his death in 1981. A coal miner and farmer for much of his life, those struggles are reflected in his sparse, haunting recordings. Featuring only Holcomb on vocals, guitar, and banjo, Close To Home is a beautiful collection of folk-blues and old-time ballads including the epic "The Village Churchyard." Lovingly reissued on vinyl with an exact replica of the original Folkways jacket and booklet.

At the time he recorded this album in 1957, Arnett Cobb was in the process of rebounding from a serious automobile accident that broke both his legs. Cobb's indomitable spirit shines through in these tracks, whether he is calmly preaching on When My Dream Boat Comes Home, grooving down the Lonesome Road, or roaring through the song that is almost as closely associated with him as it is with Illinois Jacquet - Flying Home.

There are plenty of good blues, too, and pianist Ray Bryant's eloquence in this idiom is well exposed. Ray Barretto's conga adds another flavor to the rhythm section, especially on Cocktails for Two. With Ray Bryant, Wendell Marshall, Arthur Taylor and Ray Barretto.

180 Gram Vinyl In Gatefold Jacket With Metallic 5th Color

A band with improvisational tendencies and a laid-back California vibe, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) became a hit on the jam band circuit while enjoying a close association with superstar Jack Johnson. Members Zach Gill (keyboards/vocals), Steve Adams (bass/vocals), and Dan Lebowitz (guitars/vocals) had all known one another since their days at Saratoga High School, but it wasn't until their relocation to Santa Barbara that they decided to form a band. While studying at the University of California, the musicians were introduced to Jack Johnson and drummer David Brogan, the latter of whom joined ALO while they were using the name Django.

Numerous name changes, the addition (and subtraction) of a horn section, a number of lineup changes following Brogan's brief departure, and other problems plagued the band during its early years. Even though they were earning a loyal following around Santa Barbara, the band's instability convinced them to move back to their hometown of Saratoga. A couple more drummers came through the ranks before Brogan returned in 2002, and ALO's fortunes improved as the band began releasing material. An EP, Time Expander, and the band's debut album, Fly Between Falls, both appeared in 2005. Fly Between Falls was reissued a year later on Johnson's own Brushfire label, coinciding with ALO's high-profile tour as the opening act for the Dave Matthews Band.

    Closer To Closed (EP)

From 1993 to 1997, as Braid carved out its musical niche, the pages of the bands history were filled with endless lists of shows played, 7s recorded, and followers gained. Then, a year after the release of 1998s Frame and Canvas, a genre-defining album that continues to serve as an influence for countless musicians to this day, Braid disbanded at the height of its popularity.

Since that time, fans have been treated to two posthumous compilations (Movie Music Vols. 1 & 2), a short reunion tour in 2004, and the 2010 vinyl reissues of the long out of-print Frankie Welfare Boy Age 5, The Age of Octeen and both Movie Music records.

But, even while Braid kept its name on the tip of peoples tongues, the prospect of hearing brand new music from the band remained elusive, until now. It took only a few practices to write three new tracks and arrange a cover (of Jeff Hansons You Are the Reason), all of which the band then recorded with engineer J. Robbins (Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring, Jets to Brazil, Frame and Canvas).

    The Right Time (Pure Pleasure)

I first heard Etta James as a young teenager when she had a hit with Tell Mama, a tune that has easily stood the test of time. She recorded this album a quarter-century later and sounded even better.

For The Right Time she returns to the Muscle Shoals studio where she recorded Tell Mama, this time with producer Jerry Wexler, and it's an outstanding match. She hits nary a forced or false note and is backed with a stellar band that includes saxophonist Hank Crawford, guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Willie Weeks. They plow ahead like a great offensive line blocking for an all-star running back -- one who isn't afraid to lower the shoulder and knock somebody over.

There's plenty of manufactured emotion on records, but you won't find any of it here. Etta just rocks naturally. It's like sitting next to a seasoned story teller in full command of the narrative. Nothing for you to do but sit back, close your eyes and listen.

A sign of great singers for me is how they put a stamp on songs that have been done many times. In that regard, Etta makes Love and Happiness and Ninety And A Half Won't Do her own. She tears up The Night Time Is the Right Time with the help of Crawford's sax. Of course she has the blues well covered, my personal favorite being Down Home Blues, and flashes her humorous side with the trash-talking Wet Match. She hits any note she wants without straining and with total conviction.

But all the songs are top-notch. The best advice for anyone reading this is to just pick up the album and discover the old-school glory of Etta James. - Tyler Smith

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Hailing from Canterbury, England, Moose Blood was formed in 2012 by close friends Brewerton, Mark Osborne, Glenn Harvey and Kyle Todd. United by
their passion for music and love for mid 90's emo, the band set out to create a sound that was distinctly their own. Since their inception the band has
released two EPs, Moving Home and Boston/Orlando, and a split 7" with labelmates Departures with their new label No Sleep Records and has toured
with bands like Appleseed Cast, I Am The Avalanche, Major League and Dads. Two short years after forming, Moose Blood returns with their impressive,
debut full-length record, I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time.

"I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time is everything that we've been working towards since the start of the band in 2012," says drummer Glenn
Harvey. "I think there is a much more personal and honest feel to this record than on anything else we've done up to this point. Seeing these songs turn
from ideas at our practice space to a finished 11 track album has been an incredible experience. We're all really proud of this record and we can't wait for
    everybody to finally hear it."

Moose Blood aren't afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. Produced by Saosin guitarist Beau Burchell, I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time is
replete with heartfelt, yearning lyrics about life and love that exude vulnerability with a comforting warmth. The record moves through waves of emotion
from the pensive opening balad "Cherry" to the follow-up upbeat tempo of "Anyway," sailing through the mounting crescendos of "I Hope You're Missing
Me" to the memorable, driving rhythm of "Swim Down." With each chorus and riff, I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time draws listeners in with its
unrelenting honesty and intense passion. 2014 will undoubtedly be the year Moose Blood makes their everlasting mark on the alternative rock scene.

By The Time It Gets Dark (Pure Pleasure)

    Hi Folks,

Hard to believe it's been 30 years since the release of "By The Time It Gets Dark" in 1987. There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then and how time flies when you're busy and having a good time! As it's always been one of my favorite albums I felt that it deserved to be revisited to celebrate its 30th anniversary. With that in mind, we sent the old 24 track tapes to be baked (a process to preserve them) allowing us to do a complete remix and remaster the album. We enlisted the services of my great friend and sound engineer Billy Robinson to do the job and I'm delighted with the outcome - it sounds great, even if I say so myself! We added a few bits where needed and I'm happy to see it being released on vinyl again.

It's been a nice journey revisiting that time and remembering the sights and sounds of life back then.

As we listened closely to some of the tracks, the beautiful voice of Mandy Murphy came through and I felt so sad that she passed away, so young, last year. I wish to dedicate this release to her memory.

    Good Times!

Who's ready to have some fun with The Monkees as they celebrate their 50th anniversary? With a tour kicking off in May and the group's first new album in 20 years, GOOD TIMES!, releasing, Monkee-mania will be taking 2016 by storm!

GOOD TIMES! features all three surviving band members - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. The unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal featured on one song. To produce the new album, the band found the perfect musical co-conspirator in Grammy® and Emmy®-winning songwriter Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy).

Much like The Monkees' early albums, GOOD TIMES! features tracks written specifically for the band by some of the music world's most gifted songwriters, including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave) as well as a song co-written by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. The album also includes songwriting contributions by Nesmith ("I Know What I Know") and Tork as well as producer Schlesinger.

To help bring the anniversary full circle, The Monkees completed songs for GOOD TIMES! that were originally recorded and written for the group during the 60s, including "Love To Love" by Neil Diamond, which features a vintage vocal by Jones. Harry Nilsson wrote the title track "Good Times," which he recorded at a session with Nesmith in January 1968. The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuring Nilsson's guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz. "Good Times" will mark the first time Dolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz' May 1973 single "Daybreak." Other vintage 1960's tracks included on GOOD TIMES! feature L.A.'s famed "Wrecking Crew" of session musicians.

"This is one of the most exciting Monkee projects I've been involved in for decades!" says Dolenz. "Working with Adam Schlesinger has been a pure delight and the opportunity to sing a duet with my old buddy, Harry Nilsson, is just beyond cool!"

Previously unreleased live broadcast of intimate Tom Waits performance featuring incredible rarities - plus interviews with the man himself.

Securing his first proper record deal with David Geffen's Asylum label in 1972, Tom Waits would go on to release seven records with the label in as many years. The first of these, Closing Time, was released in March 73 and comprised the most unique collection of original compositions that American critics and consumers had witnessed since the 1960s heyday of Beatles, Beach Boys and Bob Dylan. Informed by the wordsmiths of the beat generation, the blues howlers of a former age, the smooth jazz vocals of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and the country flavoured ballads that Ray Charles had turned to in the early 1960s, Waits developed a cult following with his portrayals of modern American domesticity and love sought and lost. On the 12th August 1973 Waits was to be found performing an in-house set for the renowned L.A. radio series Folk Scene, broadcast weekly by KPFK FM, Tom's performances were augmented with interviews that provide a fascinating insight into his career at this time. Included too on this LP are five additional tracks from a performance Tom made in Santa Monica a few months later on 10th November 1973. Also the subject of an FM broadcast, two further cuts from The Heart of Saturday Night are complimented by a triumvirate of Waits rarities that have seldom been heard before or since.

    Adventures In Your Own Backyard

Adventures In Your Own Backyard was made at home after a grueling five-year run that saw Patrick and his band tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris award-winning Close To Paradise. During this time, Patrick also contributed to Ma Fleur, the 2007 album from The Cinematic Orchestra, co-writing and singing on a sizeable portion of the record. In Patrick's own words, Adventures... is an effort on the band's part to make the kind of music we would want to listen to at home. The album's title is an obvious nod to this.

    Delivery Man

In celebration of their 10-year Anniversary, Lost Highway Records is re-releasing twenty of their most acclaimed albums including Elvis Costello's The Delivery Man on limited edition clear vinyl.

With 2004's The Delivery Man, Elvis Costello & the Imposters' first release for Lost Highway, one of modern music's most admired and prolific talents delivered a remarkable album that draws on deep American musical roots more than any of his releases since King of America in 1986.

Recorded in Oxford, MS and produced by Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Counting Crows, Buddy Guy & Cracker) and Elvis Costello, it is a collection that ranges from the ferocious, bass-driven opening track, Button My Lip, which speaks in the voice of a desperate man on the verge of committing a terrible crime, to a tender and timely closing rendition of, The Scarlet Tide, referred to by Costello's co-composer and fellow Oscar Nominee, T Bone Burnett as an anti-fear song.

Like a lot of great things in music history, The Delivery Man can be said to have started with the late great Johnny Cash. The Delivery Man is actually a character imported from a song I wrote in about 1986 for Johnny Cash, Costello explains. He's based on a real character. I read this story in the paper about a man who confessed to murdering his childhood friend thirty years later, having been in prison for a number of other things. I thought this story was very interesting because he'd carried this burden of guilt of this childhood crime. I wrote a fictional version of that story in a song called 'Hidden Shame,' which John recorded.

Beyond the Imposters, longtime Attractions Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve, and more recent revelation Faragher, The Delivery Man also features winning turns from two of Costello's own favorite artists, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams.

    Grace And Danger

Grace and Danger was originally released by John Martyn in October of 1980.

The album was written and recorded while Martyn was in the process of divorcing his wife Beverley, and the songs strongly reflect the emotional upheaval that he was experiencing at the time. Martyn and Phil Collins forged a close friendship during the writing and recording of the album with both musicians going through painful divorces at the time - Collins played drums and provided backing vocals. In fact, a strong kinship exists between Grace And Danger and Collins' contemporaneous album Face Value, which also contained a strong narrative relating to relationship breakdown.

    Locked Down

Storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) releases Locked Down, a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. The new album, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, is Dr. John's first for Nonesuch Records.

Its an entirely new approach for the iconic Dr. John, featuring as it does his collaboration with Auerbach and a band of young musicians Auerbach hand-picked to make Locked Down at his studio Easy Eye Sound in Nashville. It was way cool cutting this record with Dan and the crew he put together for it, says Rebennack. It's reel HIP.

For his part, Auerbach says about the collaboration: Mac inspired me every single day we were in the studio together: musically, spiritually, cosmically, something special seemed to be happening and everyone involved could sense it. For my money, Mac's one of the greatest who ever was and who ever will be, I'm so honored to have had this opportunity to work with him.

Auerbach, a long-time fan of the influential musician, dubbed the Night Tripper in the late 60s, visited Dr. John late in 2010 in his hometown of New Orleans, announcing his ambition to produce the best record you've made in a long time. Rebennack replied that he had done his research, his children had told him good things about The Black Keys, and the conversation led to an agreement to collaborate on the 2011 Bonnaroo Jam being curated by Auerbach.

That performance, called by New York Times critic Ben Ratliff in his best-of-the-year list deep and oozy, close-to-the-vest, low-frequency funk, confirmed that something unusual was taking place and led to September recording sessions in Nashville. Dr. John returned to Nashville at Thanksgiving to complete the vocals and Locked Down was mixed by Auerbach and completed in early 2012.

    Ride The Lightning

Kill 'Em All may have revitalized heavy metal's underground, but Ride the Lightning was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect heavy metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. The lyrics push into new territory as well -- more personal, more socially conscious, less metal posturing. But the true heart of Ride the Lightning lies in its rich musical imagination. There are extended, progressive epics; tight, concise groove-rockers; thrashers that blow anything on Kill 'Em All out of the water, both in their urgency and the barest hints of melody that have been added to the choruses. Some innovations are flourishes that add important bits of color, like the lilting, pseudo-classical intro to the furious Fight Fire with Fire, or the harmonized leads that pop up on several tracks. Others are major reinventions of Metallica's sound, like the nine-minute, album-closing instrumental The Call of Ktulu, or the haunting suicide lament Fade to Black. The latter is an all-time metal classic; it begins as an acoustic-driven, minor-key ballad, then gets slashed open by electric guitars playing a wordless chorus, and ends in a wrenching guitar solo over a thrashy yet lyrical rhythm figure. Basically, in a nutshell, Metallica sounded like they could do anything. Heavy metal hadn't seen this kind of ambition since Judas Priest's late-'70s classics, and Ride the Lightning effectively rewrote the rule book for a generation of thrashers. If Kill 'Em All was the manifesto, Ride the Lightning was the revolution itself.
