Sonny Rollins' 1956 masterpiece Saxophone Colossus was the tenor saxophonist's career defining release, officially elevating his status to that of the jazz elite. The iconic 5-song set finds Rollins in a quartet setting with Tommy Flanagan (piano), Doug Watkins (bass) and Max Roach (drums) performing a trio of essential originals and two equally as impressive standards. Saxophone ColossusSaxophone Colossus is a studio album by American jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. It was recorded on June 22, 1956, with producers Bob Weinstock and Rudy Van Gelder at the latter's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. Rollins led a quartet on the album that included pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Max Roach. Saxophone Colossus was released later that year by Prestige Records to critical success and helped establish Rollins as a prominent jazz artist.1. Saint Thomas

The Biggest Thing Since Colossus (Pure Pleasure)During the sixties, there was the British blues boom, containing many blues bands, one of the finest being Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. In January of 1969 Fleetwood Mac were at Chess Studios, Chicago, jamming with the likes of Willie Dixon, S.P.Leary, Honeyboy Edwards, J.T.Brown and longtime Muddy Waters pianist Otis Spann. The end result of those sessions was the classic double album "Blues Jam At Chess".
The rapport between the Mac and Otis Spann was such that they recorded another whole album together, " Colossus".
Otis Spann is his usual emotive and exciting self, feeling totally relaxed alongside his regular drummer, S.P.Leary. This coupled with Peter Green's guitar playing, which is probably at it's peak on these recordings, makes for a blues album of substance.
"The Biggest Thing Since Colossus" is probably one of the most underrated blues albums. Long out of print on vinyl and now re-mastered from the original 1/4-inch tapes this album is a must buy for all.
- Otis Spann (vocal, piano)
- Peter Green (guitar)
- Danny Kirwen (guitar)
- John McVie (bass)
- S. P. Leary (drums)
Recording: January 1969 at Tempo Sound Studios, New York City
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Mad Men, based around the trials and tribulations of a New York ad agency in the Sixties, is considered one of the Greatest TV Shows Of All Time. The drama series stands as a colossus of contemporary television with two BAFTAS, three Golden Globes and no less than fteen Emmys to its name. David Carbonara's winning mix of contemporary score and period jazz delivers a distinctive sound that has become a part of the series as much as the timeless visuals and characters. Rhyme PaysRhyme Pays is the debut album of Ice-T, originally released in 1987.
As a musician, Ice-T played a major role in the creation of the gangsta incarnation of hip-hop music and was a colossus of the West Coast hip-hop scene, despite his East Coast, greater New York, origins. Though his music displays a political consciousness, like the indictments of racism that were a hallmark of seminal hip-hop group Public Enemy, it also is nihilistic as befits a chronicler of street life. The charismatic Ice-T has also achieved success as an actor in movies and on TV. Rated OWith Rated O, Oneida has delivered a monster which happens to be the crowning achievement of their storied creative lives. By producing this colossus they have also created the necessity of its destruction, which within the confines of this tremendous accomplishment, they do so handily and with utter fluency. Perhaps Rated O represents the encyclopedic representation of Oneida music, creativity and insatiability. The music contained within the covers of Rated O must be seen as a gifted wilderness that when traversed will grant the traveler both a fractured mirror and a demolished and worried pathway deeper into the abyss. This album is an attempt to contain the entirety of Oneida and thus it points the way to infinite rebirth and boundless creativity. It is a finite map and the suggestion of unknown worlds.
Oneida has been releasing genre-defying music since 1997. They have nine full-length albums (one as double album, and now one as triple album) and various EPs and singles to their name. The list of great musicians and artists that Oneida have performed or collaborated with is far too extensive to briefly summarize here. They are critical darlings, they have become ambassadors for Jagjaguwar, and they are paying it forward with a label of their own called Brah Records (distributed by Jagjaguwar). For the reductivist in you, consider Oneida the bastard offspring of a Can/Suicide marriage, a band who is not afraid to pluck, tap, bend, synth or crash their way to the various extremes of rock, pop, folk and the avant-garde, and who brilliantly do so without alienating the respective fans of any of these so-called genres.
This triple LP version comes in a beautiful triple pocket gatefold jacket and contains a digital download coupon for free MP3s of all three platters.

PiratesRickie Lee Jones Pirates On Numbered Limited-Edition 180-gram LP From Mobile Fidelity. Singer-Songwriters gorgeous-sounding 1981 album finally remastered!
Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates arrives like a cloudburst in the desert of Eighties formula pop music and recycled heavy-metal rock. So wrote Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone in his five-star review of the eclectic artists sophomore album, a set that continues to defy eras and styles. While less-well known than her 1979 self-titled debut, the ambitious 1981 record remains Jones definitive statementan effort steeped in biographical details, fictional circumstances, and classic literary elements.
Narratively blending West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet while also exploring spirit worlds and her breakup with Tom Waits, Pirates is at its core an idiosyncratic fusion of possibilities. And does Jones deliver! Accompanied by an all-star lineup that includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Steely Dan icon Donald Fagen, drumming colossus Steve Gadd, session pro Victor Feldman, and legendary jazz arranger Ralph Burns, the singer-songwriter achieves a musical nirvana that encompasses post-bop, coffeehouse folk, bohemian pop, romantic soul, Beat poetry, and Broadway showtunes.
Harmonized vocals and jive talking bring the piano-based records rich characters to life, making it seem as if listeners are overhearing conversations between strangers. In more than one way, Pirates is a self-contained theatrical production in which Jones singing is the star attraction. Her moody whispers, cries, and coos are the voices of spurned lovers, alienated outcasts, and unlikely heroines. Albums with this kind of stylistic magnitude, close-up intimacy, and emotional intensity come around only once or so a decade.
Mobile Fidelity is proud to have had the opportunity to remaster Pirates from the original analog master tapes and produce a version that captures every nuance of this great-sounding studio masterpiece. Co-produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker (whose long list of credits include Randy Newman, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton records), trust us when we say that this 180-gram LP is one of the finest-sounding pop records youll hear. Fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Carole King, and Sarah Vaughan should consider this requisite listening. MoFis mini-LP style packaging only adds to the allure.
So dont hesitate: Be the Lucky Guy that Jones sings about on the record by securing your lowest-numbered copy of Mobile Fidelitys half-speed mastered LP of Pirates today!

Way Out WestMastered off the original 2-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.
The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: I'm hot now.
Mastered by Doug Sax.
Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.' - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's Best-Sounding Jazz LPs)

Win Hands DownArmored Saint are a colossus, and Win Hands Down will long be remembered as one of the seven wonders of modern metal. The album - the band's seventh studio offering in a career spanning more than three decades - is all things Armored, a vintage crush of classic power propelled by a cathartic blast of life in the year 2015. This is Armored Saint, and this is nothing short of magnificent.
The fist-pumping adrenaline rush starts with the title track and escalates from there, Win Hands Down delivering an album-opening rally cry that re-introduces the players after their five year sojourn since the release of La Raza in 2010. As always, they are the same Saints we've grown to know and love - frontman John Bush and bassist Joey Vera, guitarist Phil Sandoval and his brother, drummer Gonzo Sandoval, and guitarist Jeff Duncan - five masters of metal that combine to forge one of the genre's most criminally-unsung forces.
When we started work on this record, I said, 'Let's pretend we are a really big band and can do whatever we want', says Bush of the spark that ignited Win Hands Down. Technology allows us that luxury, and we can take that luxury when it comes to writing. In the end, we know who we are, so we don't have those boundaries that other bands might have - you push yourself, dig deep and write stuff that makes you feel happy and fulfills you. That's really important, and I think it came through. This means a lot more to us than just, 'We made a rock/metal album...'LP 1
