    Considered by many to be his finest single album, Coltrane finds John Coltrane displaying all of the exciting elements that sparked brilliance and allowed his fully formed instrumental voice to shine through in the most illuminating manner. On tenor saxophone, he's simply masterful, offering the burgeoning sheets of sound philosophy into endless weavings of melodic and tuneful displays of inventive, thoughtful, driven phrases. Coltrane also plays a bit of soprano saxophone as a primer for his more exploratory work to follow. Meanwhile, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and especially the stellar McCoy Tyner have integrated their passionate dynamics into the inner whole of the quartet. The result is a most focused effort, a relatively popular session to both his fans or latecomers, with five selections that are brilliantly conceived and rendered. "Out of This World," at over 14 minutes in modal trim, is a powerful statement, stretched over Tyner's marvelous and deft chords, the churning rhythms conjured by Jones, and the vocal style Coltrane utilizes as he circles the wagons on this classic melody, including a nifty key change. "Tunji" is a mysterious, easily rendered piece in 4/4 which speaks to the spiritual path Coltrane tred, a bit riled up at times while Tyner remains serene. Hard bop is still in the back of their collective minds during "Miles' Mode," a sliver of a melody that jumps into jam mode in a free-for-all blowing session, while the converse is to be found in Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," the quintessential ballad and impressive here for the way Coltrane's holds notes, emotion, and expressive intellectuality. On soprano you can tell Coltrane is close to taking complete control of his newly found voicings, as a playful, jaunty "The Inch Worm" in 3/4 time is only slightly strained, but in which he finds complete communion with the others. Even more than any platitudes one can heap on this extraordinary recording, it historically falls between the albums OlÉ Coltrane and Impressions -- completing a triad of studio efforts that are as definitive as anything Coltrane ever produced, and highly representative of him in his prime.--Michael G.     Coltrane's sessions for Atlantic in late October 1960 were prolific, yielding the material for My Favorite Things, Coltrane Plays The Blues and Coltrane's Sound. My Favorite Things was destined to be the most remembered and influential of these, and while Coltrane Plays The Blues is not as renowned or daring in material, it is still a powerful session. As for the phrase plays the blues in the title, that's not an indicator that the tunes are conventional blues (they aren't). It's more indicative of a bluesy sensibility, whether he is playing muscular saxophone or, on Blues to Bechet and Mr. Syms, the more unusual sounding (at the time) soprano sax. Elvin Jones, who hadn't been in Coltrane's band long, really busts out on the quicker numbers, such as Blues to You and Mr. Day.

    Soultrane

    Soultrane is the fourth album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1958 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7142. It was recorded at the studio of Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, New Jersey.


    The album is a showcase for Coltrane's late-1950s "sheets of sound" style, the term itself coined by critic Ira Gitler in the album's liner notes. Also featured is a long reading of Billy Eckstine's ballad standard "I Want to Talk About You", which Coltrane would revisit often during his career, most notably on the album Live at Birdland. Among the other tracks is the popular theme "Good Bait" by Tadd Dameron, and Fred Lacey's elegiac "Theme For Ernie". "You Say You Care" is from the Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

    Giant Steps was recorded in 1959 by John Coltrane. This was the first album where all songs recorded were original compositions of Coltrane. The album showcases Coltrane's masterful improvisational style that is now known as sheets of sound. Giant Steps is often used as a practice piece because of its chord progression, and is seen by jazz musicians as the standard for modern jazz, also being used as a gauge of measuring a musician's improvisational skill. Soon after the release of Giant Steps, Coltrane ventured into modal jazz, so this album is often viewed as his farewell to bebop.

    Sun Ship

    Sun Ship is a jazz album recorded on August 26, 1965, by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The album extended the free jazz ideas of Transition. The relaxed, serene feel of earlier ballads like "Welcome" was transformed into a new style of ballad on "Dearly Beloved" and "Attaining". This style involved very slow tempos, drum rolls and fills, and a louder, more intense feel than traditional jazz ballads. Like "Psalm" (from A Love Supreme), there is no real tune, just a scale or series of tones used to build an improvised theme.


    Coltrane's solos on the other tracks are also more extreme than on his earlier albums, and are reminiscent of the style of Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders in their extensive use of altissimo and multiphonics. The title "Sun Ship" may have been inspired by Sun Ra's conception of free jazz as having an affinity with science fiction conceptions of human existence.


    Sun Ship was one of the only albums John Coltrane's quartet recorded without sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder. It was also one of the last albums (with First Meditations, recorded a week later) which John Coltrane recorded before he began experimenting with larger groups. Tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders was playing regularly with the band by September, 1965, and both McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones left the band in January, 1966.

    History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience.


    Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one.


    Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers -- who was the only band member other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated -- replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course.


    At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos -- the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed sheets of sound. Coltrane's polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre -- turning it into the equivalent of easy listening.


    He wastes no time as the disc's title track immediately indicates a progression from which there would be no looking back. Line upon line of highly cerebral improvisation snake between the melody and solos, practically fusing the two. The resolute intensity of Countdown does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers. Tellingly, the contrasting and ultimately pastoral Naima was the last tune to be recorded, and is the only track on the original long-player to feature the Kind of Blue quartet. What is lost in tempo is more than recouped in intrinsic melodic beauty.

    At long last these early recordings, which Miles Davis set down for the Columbia label in 1955 and 1956, are available on LP again. And what is more, they were made without any alternate takes or second attempts, as is the custom these days.


    You can sit back and enjoy the six numbers in the order which the producer, probably in conjunction with Davis, decided upon. To be sure, all of the titles are well known and have been played a thousand times over in many different versions. But what this Quintet (and here each and every individual musician is meant!) produces as regards inventiveness, thrilling improvisations and artistry is absolutely top notch. Davis's vibrato-less sound is taken over seamlessly by John Coltrane - wonderfully demonstrated in the middle of Bye, Bye Blackbird, while Paul Chambers' showpiece is Ack VÄrmeland du sköna (aka Dear Old Stockholm). In the years 1955/56, bebop was the talk of the day, born witness to by the classics Tadd's Delight by Tadd Dameron and Ah-Leu-Cha by Charlie Parker. Here, however, the improvised melodic strands are more moderate, pointing the way to the style that later became known as modal jazz.


    Although 'Round About Midnight as an album does not enjoy the reputation of Kind Of Blue, this Columbia recording contains many gems which are well worth hearing.

And the rave reviews which appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swingjournal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized that Coltrane's deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music-making. It not only enabled him to express himself with great intensity but also lent him the necessary inner peace to conceive a work of almost 40 minutes in length and to lead his quartet along the same path as himself.


    The first section, entitled "Acknowledgement", has a forceful bass line which runs throughout the whole work. The powerful sound increases in intensity, whereby the bass motif undergoes constant modulation, with John Coltrane's meditative singing creating immense tension.


    In "Resolution" Coltrane's powerful, quasi hymnlike expression comes to the fore, with McCoy Tyner achieving equal intensity in his solo. "Pursuance", with its density, quick-as-lightning runs and block chords, gives us a taste of John Coltrane's later 'free' phase. "Psalm" is filled with the famous, almost static melodies rather like a fervent prayer which are so typical for John Coltrane. "A Love Supreme" has been a faithful companion and teacher of generations of saxophonists and its message goes way beyond Music and is still valid today.

    Rare stuff from John Coltrane! The album features 'Trane' playing tenor on only 4 of the album's 8 tracks - making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title - but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs - possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing - but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music.



    Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups - such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass - plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date - but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work - on titles that include She Didn't Say Yes, Turtle Walk, At Home With The Blues, Seabreeze, and Love & The Weather.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. The choice of material is fairly evenly split between modal pieces like Inception and more harmonically involved tunes like Speak Low, and the pianist's treatment of both demonstrates the extent to which his early work was rooted in bebop. Tyner had yet to develop the massive orchestral sound and highly distinctive vocabulary of modal licks that would mark his later style, and throughout this album he spins dizzyingly long and singing lines with an exquisitely light touch. The irresistible rush of forward momentum that he maintains on tracks like Effendi and Blues for Gwen is breathtaking, and there is an exuberant, almost athletic quality to much of his solo work. Bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones provide superb accompaniment throughout, and they lay a solid rhythmic foundation for Tyner's sparkling melodic flights. The pianist's penchant for drama, which asserts itself more strongly in his later work, is on brief display in the original ballad Sunset; his skills as an arranger, though evident on several tracks, are perhaps best illustrated by the intricate contrapuntal treatment of There Is No Greater Love.

    At long last these early recordings, which Miles Davis set down for the Columbia label in 1955 and 1956, are available on LP again. And what is more, they were made without any alternate takes or second attempts, as is the custom these days.



    You can sit back and enjoy the six numbers in the order which the producer, probably in conjunction with Davis, decided upon. To be sure, all of the titles are well known and have been played a thousand times over in many different versions. But what this Quintet (and here each and every individual musician is meant!) produces as regards inventiveness, thrilling improvisations and artistry is absolutely top notch. Davis's vibrato-less sound is taken over seamlessly by John Coltrane - wonderfully demonstrated in the middle of Bye, Bye Blackbird, while Paul Chambers' showpiece is Ack VÄrmeland du sköna (aka Dear Old Stockholm). In the years 1955/56, bebop was the talk of the day, born witness to by the classics Tadd's Delight by Tadd Dameron and Ah-Leu-Cha by Charlie Parker. Here, however, the improvised melodic strands are more moderate, pointing the way to the style that later became known as modal jazz.



    Although 'Round About Midnight as an album does not enjoy the reputation of Kind Of Blue, this Columbia recording contains many gems which are well worth hearing.

    "Eight Miles High" b/w "Why" - The Rare RCA Studios Versions Original Mono Masters!!!


    During an action-packed Byrds tour of the UK in August 1965, ideas began to form in Gene Clark's mind for a new song. After germinating for several weeks, he began to put his thoughts on paper during the band's U.S. tour in November 1965.


    Traveling from gig to gig, David Crosby's cassettes of Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane provided the tour bus soundtrack. As Clark continued writing the song that would become ''Eight Miles High,'' this exotic music, especially Coltrane's recordings, found their way into the composition. Juxtaposed against lyrical snapshots of London, like ''rain grey town, known for its sound,'' the modal melody created a striking contrast and summoned a surreal, flight-like feeling.


    Despite Clark's increasing isolation from the group, it was obvious that ''Eight Miles High'' was a work of major importance and the group promptly made plans to record it. The band entered RCA Studios in Los Angeles on December 22, 1965, to track ''Eight Miles High,'' along with a new Roger McGuinn- David Crosby song ''Why.'' They had worked up an explosive arrangement for the Clark song, adding elements culled from their recent highway listening sessions. The Coltrane influence is especially evident in McGuinn's electric twelve-string solo, inspired by Coltrane's free-form sax lines on ''India.'' Shankar's sitar work is reflected in Chris Hillman's driving bass part, a hypnotic drone against which McGuinn's guitar lines shine in high relief. This Eastern influence also emerges on the high energy ''Why'' with McGuinn creating a sitar-like solo on his guitar while employing non-Western scales. Though not a conscious attempt, these songs were later cited as pioneering examples of raga rock, one of several innovative sub-genres, along with folk rock and country rock that the band explored in their career.


    Despite the unqualified artistic success of the RCA sessions, Columbia refused to release the tracks because they had not been recorded in a Columbia-owned studio. The band dutifully re-recorded the two songs at Columbia Studios in Hollywood and these recordings were released as a single and later included in the Fifth Dimension album. However, the band was not fully satisfied with this second attempt, believing that the RCA recordings were better.


    This special Sundazed release marks the first use of the recently located original mono mixdown masters. McGuinn has always felt that the first recordings of these songs were more spontaneous. And when asked about the RCA version of ''Eight Miles High'' Crosby declared, ''It was a stunner, it was better, it was stronger. It was the way we wanted it to be.''
